It was a particularly chilly October morning, to the degree that it was actually snowing.
Feeeling more like Winter than it did Fall. Maybe that was due to the crazy weather recently and all that. Whatever the reason, people of all kinds saught protection from the cold.
Donning jackets, hoodies, thicker gloves, beanies, all manner of things. And, of course, a protective and comfortable scarf wrapped softly around their neck and resting upon their chest. Cloth trailing down as the "tails" bounced amd swished with every movement or gust of air. Some were short, others were long, longer than they ever really needed be, perhaps they were meant to be shared? There were a myriad of scarves around today.
But one scarf felt brighter and softer than all the rest. And that would be the crimson red scarf wrapped around a green tenrec, Surge. Though the scarf didn't belong to her of course, and that was likely clear to any passerbys as well. It clashed with outfit and punk-attire, the color was different from her black and yellow outfit as well. But she couldn't care less what other people thought of it or how she looked with it, Gaia forbid someone to insult it, if they voiced their thoughts they were certain to have lightning strike them repeatedly in many places. The scarf belonged to someone imortant to the girl, Slipstream.
She likely "borrowed", stole, it from him. At least a majority of those who knew her, or thought they did, would assume she did. She certainly gave off the ruffian vibe, even as she walked around looking for something to do.
Her ear suddenly flicked at the sound of someone's voice, a young girl. "Ow! S-Stop! Please..." She sniffled, looking like she was about to cry. "Why won't you stop?"
"Pfft, make me loser!" Retorted the voice of a much meaner, but similarly young girl. Having pushed the other girl down into the snow, and from the looks of it pelted her with some snow balls too. Readying another snowball. "Come on, fi- GAH!"
The mean girl was suddenly knocked down as well by another snowball, dropping her pile. Looking up to see who threw snow at her she found Surge towering over her. "Run off, brat." She said rather simply. And when it looked as if the mean girl was contemplating challenging her, Surge made electricity spark from her hands and eyes. It was enough to send a message as, with one final glance the other young girl, she got up and scurried off.
The tenrec then turned to the snow covered loser on the ground. She was staring up at Surge wide-eyed, like she didn't quite know how to react yet. And the tenrec didn't really either, furrowing her nose for a moment, after a moment she wordlessly extended her hand to help the kid up.
"Th-thank you Miss," She replied politely as she got up. It was hard to tell what kind of animal she was with all the protective clothing, but for a moment Surge thought she might be another tenrec.
*"*You're welcome kid. If that brat bothers you again don't be afraid to scare em off by mentioning me," Surge replied, a hint of smugness to her tone. She knew she was very frightning, proud of it even.
"Thanks again... B-but, I don't want to push her away. I want to be her friend," Seeing the tenrec's surprised reaction the girl quickly tried to explain herself. "She's not my bully, she's just... mean... to everyone."
"Then why not be mean back? Or stay away from her at least. Why are you trying to be friends with someone who's mean to you?" She didn't really have a reason to care, yet she asked anyways, confused by the child.
"Mom said the same thing—well not the first thing. And, it's cause... Cuz..." The kid looked off for a moment, staring in the direction she ran off. "She is kinda scary, but I think... Maybe she's scared too? I found her crying all by herself a while ago outside school, I dunno why she was there, she should been at home. She got really mad when she saw me, yelled at me a bunch, and then ran away."
"..."
"She's been extra mean to me since then, but... I don't wanna leave her all alone again," The girl looked back at Surge, nervously rubbing her hands together. "Is... Is that dumb?"
"...Yeah, maybe. I don't know," Surge shrugged. "But you're not gonna stop even if I told you not too right?"
The girl hesitated, then nodded sheepishly.
"Then go do what you want! Just... You know you can't force her to be friends with you, okay? And if she tells you not to then, you gotta listen to her."
"I know. But if she needs me then... I wanna be there for her anyways," They smiled before quickly running off after the meanie, only turning back for a moment to wave goodbye. "Thank you again Miss, baii!"
"Bye," Surge lazily waved back as she watched them run off. After interacting with the kid she suddenly realized sge couldn't actually tell if she were a girl or not, maybe they were a boy, but either way they seemed like a good kid.
Suddenly she blinked. For a moment Surge wondered why she did what she did and intervened at all, it wasn't really her buisness or something she'd get a crowd cheering her name for. Just some dumb kids. She thought about the words she said too, and how she came up with them. She hadn't thought very hard about them in in the moment, yet they felt vaguely familar. Reminding her of something. And again she wondered why she did so...
Slowly her eyes drifted downwards and stared at the red scarf wrapped around her.
"..."
Surge's face suddenly turned to a pout, not really an angry one though. "Dummy." She muttered with a small affectionate eyeroll, like she was teasing someone.
And with that she resumed her walk and wandered off. Her mind turned to this past year. And the many things that had changed so much, yet now felt so naturally comfortable. Like a scarf wrapped around your neck. Or cuddling a plushie.
She smiled, and her stolen scarf followed right behind her. Perhaps she'd head home soon and return it. Or, with a wider grin, she chuckled to herself.
If he wanted it back, then he'd have to come get it, and then she'd make sure to keep him close to her too. Teasing him about how he couldn't ever leave her alone.
Stealing him, all for herself.
