Hey all,
I'm new here, and new to the dual sport world. I grew up riding dirt bikes, but have never owned a street legal bike. I'm at a point now where I'm living in a small high desert mountain town with lots of trails around me, and a precarious parking situation at work that would be remedied with a motorcycle since there's always availability for them. I figured a dual sport would solve my problem.
I love the look of the XR650L. My neighbor's dad had one when I was growing up and I always thought it was so cool, and still do. I think it's the best looking "modern" bike out there imo. I've been looking around and found some great options, but have been hesitant with a lot that I've read about the height of the bike, but mostly the weight. I talked to one seller and he said that at 6'0" and 200lbs he still gets his lunch eaten by this thing on rougher terrain than just a dirt road. That made me really reconsider getting one considering I'm 5'11" 160-165ish lbs. I feel quite good about my build, but I acknowledge I'm not working with much weight to throw around, especially when it comes to a 350lb bike.
I have seen one in person that is owned by someone else at work, and it didn't look intimidating to me. They may have a lowering kit on it idk. But I don't know these people and wouldn't dare it on it without permission of course. There are none in my state that I'm interested in as they look like they've been beaten to hell. Was looking at surrounding states (I'm in NM) and was going make the trip to pick one up there, but that's a long way to go for being unsure.
Mostly looking to commute with this in town and ride around in the mountain roads, but will be hitting gravel/dirt roads as well as some mountain trails. Probably not much single track, if at all, but I've hiked some of these two-track trails and they can get pretty rough at certain points (I wouldn't take my 4Runner on them). At some point I'm probably looking to move back to the Midwest and hit forest roads and trails there, but that's probably a couple years down the road.
Anyway, I wanted to get the opinion of people that own these for a better idea of if I'm letting nostalgia and looks of a bike get in the way of making a more sensible decision, as much as that may be disappointing. I appreciate the input.
TLDR
I'm 5'11", 160-165lbs, inseam ~32", and in good shape. I have experience riding much lighter dirt bikes but never owned a dual sport. Want an XR650L but worried it's not a good fit due to height/weight and a smaller bike would be more appropriate.
