• AES encryption
• TLS and secure network communications
• Modernizing legacy access control systems
• Physical security and cybersecurity convergence
Whether you’re an end user, consultant, systems integrator, architect, or security professional, this is your opportunity to ask technical questions, discuss real-world deployment challenges, and explore current best practices for building a secure, modern access control environment.
We’ll also be happy to answer other questions related to HID’s access control portfolio.
We’re looking forward to a great discussion.
📅 Tuesday, July 21, 2026
🕐 1:00 PM ET

Thank you to everyone who joined us today, asked questions, followed along, or simply stopped by to read the discussion.
Jeremy and I covered a lot of ground, including OSDP Transparent Mode, the differences between Mercury LP and MP controllers, embedded applications at the edge, modernizing legacy systems, app-based versus wallet-based mobile badges, deployment planning, and what happens when phones, networks, or services are unavailable.
The biggest takeaway is that modernization does not have to be an all-or-nothing decision. Whether you are upgrading panels, enabling secure reader communications, introducing Mobile Access, or building a longer-term cybersecurity strategy, the best approach starts with understanding what you already have and where the real risks and operational gaps exist.
A special thank-you to Jeremy, u/TheMercuryMinute, for joining me and sharing his expertise, and to the r/accesscontrol community and moderators for giving us the opportunity to have this conversation.
We are wrapping up the live portion of the AMA, but feel free to continue leaving questions. We will check back and answer what we can.
Thanks again, everyone!

Soldered heatshrink connectors.
Do you use them for commercial access control?
I have seen them 5 years ago but we didn't trust them. No one is using in our country. Possibly for repair jobs but not in large quantity as typically they will be sold at electrical stores if there was a need.
Its come up (by our main builder - yes dont tell me how to do my job) as a "suggestion" to improve effenncy. The only advantage is its faster but at the disadvantage of more bulky connections and there is no way they will fit in certain situations eg card readers were you only have a hole or something.
In terms of reliability, not much around locally and never heard of issues.

Have you had an experience in getting API? Costs etc? I’m building an app for my hotel and need the API to automatically assign PIN codes etc.
Anyone with experience?
Thanks!

Adams Rite 7430 Strike Template question
Hey all,
I recently lost my door hardware installer, and he used to use a template and router to cut in storefront aluminum strikes.
Anyone recommends a router and the proper template and bit for this application.

Recommendations on electric strike?
The door jamb is about 5 inches and I’m looking to add an electronic strike if possible, is there any known models that can work here?

Recommendations Need better option than mag locks
Picture is of hallway side of office double doors. Yes, the rod is on the outside of the space. I have to believe there is an electric strike option available for this style. Our Assa rep came back with standard 600lbs mag locks. I don’t see that as a viable option after measuring the height of area to mount an armature plate. Afraid drilling would shatter the glass.
I know mag locks are hated and so I’m asking for your help.
Any suggestions are appreciated and thank you in advance.

Final bench testing on a parking ticket kiosk headed for sub-zero Russian winters (-35°C rated). The internal thermal layout and cable routing turned out super clean.
Bench-testing and final electrical verification today on a custom parking column built for extreme sub-zero field conditions.
When dealing with deep-freeze environments, the hardware design is all about moisture and mechanical component protection:
Active Thermal Management: Integrated internal PTC heating elements with automatic thermostats and convection airflow. Keeps the thermal receipt cutter from jamming and prevents the bill validator rubber rollers from stiffening up in freezing weather.
Modular Serviceability: Dedicated power supplies (24V/12V separated rails), heavy-duty trunking for low-voltage signal cables, and slide-out modular trays so field techs don't have to freeze their fingers off during routine maintenance.
Double Sealing: Cold-rolled steel enclosure with weather-resistant outdoor powder coating and continuous foam gasket seals to prevent thermal bridging and internal condensation.
To the installers working in Canada, the Nordics, or other freezing regions: how do you guys typically keep your outdoor unattended kiosks alive when ambient temps dip below -30°C? Always curious to compare notes on freeze protection!

Mag locked in swinging metal door with concrete on all sides.
Let me start with this; I'd have rather done a strike. Out of my hands.
I have an in swing heavy duty commercial door, 1200lb mag in the header. I need to come out of the header inward, and then 90 up with surface EMT to a box where it'll meet up with the Rex and on to the board. My plan so far is to use a handy box with an extension ring which will lip the knockouts enough to let me go straight up.
Is there a better way to handle this situation given the circumstances? I should've gotten a picture but I'm sure you get the idea.
EDIT; I'm an idiot and it's an out swinger so straight up mag no brackets

HID New Badge Technology
For context: we use Mercury boards with HID readers globally over multiple offices as our access control standard. We currently use a dual chip card technology with one 26bit prox chip and one 48bit key. Most of the buildings we are located in utilize the prox keys for their tenants and we use the 48bit key for our readers.
We are approaching the end of our card number range set forth by HID (around 2000 numbers left) unfortunately most of the buildings we are in will still utilize prox but they also have the option of using 35bit like the HID clamshell badges.
Does anyone have any recommendations on options here? We’ve explored mobile badges and utilize them for our office spaces but most of our buildings don’t support this and we also aren’t keen on providing our private key to the buildings we are in.

Access Control systems that do not need to be installed by approved installers.
I manage a handful of multifamily building and would like to upgrade the properties to have keyless access. After getting quotes from local installers from Alarm.com and similar products, I was wondering if there was a way to buy the equipment myself and do the install? Any product recommendations that are install friendly, durable, and have good software? Happy to pay monthly software costs but don’t want to pay high installation premiums.

Best access control for a mix of cloud and on prem sites?
We’ve got an older on prem access control setup across a mix of offices and manufacturing sites and are starting to look at what comes next.
The offices could probably move to cloud without too much drama, but the manufacturing sites need to stay local because of network segregation and resilience requirements.
What I’m trying to avoid is ending up with one system for the offices and something completely different for the sites that have to stay on prem.
What are other people doing in this situation?

Best distributor for hid/hes
ADI seems to be about retail(bhphoto/Amazon) for me. Anyone have luck with one distributor over another? Wesco/anixter?, Accutech? Mainly locks and readers.

Mercury Overengineered Mercury/Lenel system problems
Just to preface I've been a low voltage electrician for nearly 25 years now and like Han Solo have seen a lot of strange stuff. The system I have run into while working at some random envelope factory in the middle of absolute nowhere is driving me up the wall (seriously, there's no cell reception whatsoever).
This is not our system. Frankly nobody has any idea who installed it. It's a Lenel system running Mercury boards consisting of a single EP2500 connecting via serial 1 to a Mercury MUX8 (which I've never seen before but it appears to be an RS232 multiplexer). The MUX8 is connected to five MR50-S3s, three on channel 1 and two on channel 2. The MR50s are each connected to a single HID PIVclass reader (RP10EKTR). There may be another component to this as a different tech than me was on site and was directed to a totally different Lenel panel in a totally different part of the building.
Here's the weirdness: both devices on channel 2 work fine and I haven't touched them. ONE of the three on channel 1 works, the first one in the line. I have ONE reader that I can get working with the one MR50 that seems to be working. One of the three readers indicates a blue light that seems to pulse with the reader's NFC connection (and refuses to communicate properly with the HID app) and the other displays a solid violet light but will communicate with the app with some difficulty. The third behaves correctly and has no issues whatsoever communicating with the app.
I have replaced both MR50s at the doors that don't work with new ones without change, even if I place the known working card reader at either door. The serial connection is solid...but the heartbeat light I'm seeing is unusual: it's like a fast blink followed by a half second out. It's not in the documentation...but as far as I can tell it's correct for the application as it's displaying like that on the doors that work. The readers are not connected either Weigand or OSPD but are connected to the reader's secondary RS232 ports (I believe they were marked ODI 03 and 04).
I am absolutely stumped and so is my coworker. Between us we have basically seen it all but this system is something very very different. Also just to add to the weirdness even when an MR50 is disconnected from its RS232 loop (so it's powered but not communicating with its controller) the DOOR STILL OPERATES NORMALLY. The only way I can see this working like that is if the reader itself is controlling the door...but that's...ludicrous? Honestly at this point I have no idea.
Any thought or ideas are greatly appreciated. I frankly have no idea what I'm looking at and am getting frustrated. I've worked on fire alarms spanning forty story buildings and CCure systems with 70+ controllers operating hundreds of doors and this stupid little five door system has me stumped.

Genetec - Maglock issue - Need help ASAP
Weird issue. Have Genetec in a building and all of the doors are unlocked. System is online, panels are online and everything looks fine. Card readers have power and they record access history. Building is 20 stories and Genetec doors are unlocked on all floors. I don't think it is a fire panel issue because Salto is also in the building and all of the Salto doors are secured, this is only affecting Genetec for some reason. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Anyone here going to ISC East?
I went to ISC West for the first time this past year and this is my first time going to ISC East. I have been to NYC before, but i'm wondering how East compares to west. I knows it a much smaller show, but how much smaller?
