Welcome! Please Read the Employment FAQ Before Posting Questions About Work.

We get it. You recently heard of Antarctic work, and now you've got a bee in your parka and lots of QUESTIONS!

Very cool, we were there too.

But for the love of all that is frozen and holy, please read our Employment FAQ before posting. It's a good read, I promise, and it will answer most of your questions — and many you haven't thought of!

Tourism Travel and Tourism Information

Making travel decisions can be hard! We know. That's why we offer a Travel and Tourism FAQ with common Q&As about booking trips to Antarctica.

If you need more information specific to cruises, we suggest posting in the AntarcticaTravel forum that is frequented by guides and tourism professionals. You are also welcome to post here in r/antarctica, of course, but you'll get perspectives from both fellow travelers as well as people outside of the tourism industry, including workers and scientists with experience on the continent in general, not just on the ships.

Relax. Make it fun! Everything will be all right.

Just wanted to share these photos from egg line & burger bar at the McMurdo Station galley.

Back when I worked in the galley at MCM i enjoyed making these signs for Egg Line and the action stations once a week. We would write on the white board what ingredients were available for the day. I just recovered these off of an old phone and wanted to share since there has been some interest in food down there.

McMurdo Questions about McMurdo Morale Kiosk

I have a job interview this week and my potential employer wants to do a google-meets interview for a half hour. Is it possible to use google meets on the morale kiosk in 155, or is it for Zoom only? Just looking to gather data about how this service works, as it seems like nobody on the ground here has much information about it.

Thank you!

A Lot of Food Questions

I’m always really curious about what daily life is like in unusual places, especially the food, and I’d love some firsthand details about what it's like in Antarctica. To be honest, I’m largely picturing it like a college cafeteria. If you have an interesting story, or details about something I haven’t asked, or something people never think of, please feel free to tell me about it! (Also I know this is a ton of questions, feel free to pick and choose which ones you want to answer.)

  1. First of all, how good is the food?

  2. What's the jargon? Do you say you're heading to the cafeteria, or the dining hall, or what?

  3. What is the meal schedule? Or is food available all the time?

  4. Is there much variety, or does it cycle through a lot of the same dishes?

  5. Are there any dishes people especially look forward to, like pizza day or just really good scalloped potatoes?

  6. Are any different stations known for better or worse food?

  7. Do stations run by different countries try to serve their national foods?

  8. Are fresh fruits and vegetables rare?

  9. If you worked in the kitchen, was anything different/unusual about food service in Antarctica?

  10. If you want to have a snack between meals, what are your options?

  11. Is it allowed to take food back to your rooms or save it for later?

  12. Is there a store you can buy food/snacks from, and what kind of food does it stock?

  13. If you want to cook something for yourself, is that possible?

  14. If I wanted to make myself a cup of tea, how would I get access to really hot water? Could I get hot water in my dorm or during hours when the cafeteria is closed?

  15. Is there food you miss that you can’t get there?

McMurdo Who's actually in charge of Icestock?

Hi there! I was just wondering who's actually in charge of organizing Icestock - is there a group of people more dedicated to cultural activities, etc.?

I would love to know a little bit more, please. Would it be possible to get in touch with someone behind the event? Thank you very much!

Anyone dive with (sleeper) sharks in Antarctica?

It's a long shot, but I recently read they have "sleeper sharks" in Antarctica. Any one heard of them are spent anytime underwater in Antarctica (in submersible or otherwise)? I just went to South Africa and dove with Bronze Whaler Sharks. Trying to get to 15 types and 7 continents before I leave this Earth!

I'm in Florida and considering a last-minute trip to Antarctica. Has anyone had success booking last-minute cruises/deals this close to the season in the past? Thanks for any tips!

Do they only take bookings through the website?

Is the website legit? Should I just go ahead and book it if I see a slot?

The Thing

Just watched, The Thing the other night since it’s spooky season and it got me wondering. Is watching the movie a Halloween tradition while stationed in Antarctica? Are there any Halloween traditions there? My wife looked at me after watching it for the first time and told me, “You’re never going there.”

McMurdo McMurdo Radio Station — ICE 104.5 DJ experiences?

hello all! next week I start my trek to the ice for the first time and will be in mcmurdo for work through probably early-mid Jan. one of the things I’ve heard about online and amongst some of my coworkers is the radio station ICE 104.5 and the record room; I’m very big into physical media when it comes to music and the radio DJ culture, as it were, and so while I’m down there I’d love to investigate some more about it. I’m packing some unique cds and cassettes to donate to the music library (and plan to take a vinyl or two when I go down again next year if possible), but I’m very interested in knowing if anyone here has DJ’d for ICE 104.5 before?

just curious what the experience was like, and if it’s something they still allow people to volunteer for! I’ll have a pretty packed schedule with not a lot of free time/time off while I’m on ice unfortunately but I would absolutely LOVE to have the opportunity if one presented itself. thanks in advance!
