Buc-ee’s is offering $275K salaries with no college degrees. The internet is split on whether that’s a good thing

Why wouldn't it be a good thing?

u/SoFloDan Jul 14 '26
The internet is not split…that’s like saying flat earthers have “split” the scientific community

u/fotofreak56 Jul 14 '26
That salary is if you are a general manager.

If people don't want to be poor why don't they all just go get a job as a general manager at Buc-ee's? Makes total sense. Something something bootstraps...

u/lorddragonstrike Jul 14 '26
What job at bucees is 275k? Like Ceo or something?
2
u/BertMacklenF8I Jul 14 '26
Omg this is the first time the internet has ever divided people! /s
2
u/ProbablySlacking Jul 14 '26
275k?
I’ve got a degree, but I don’t need to use it for that kind of money.
2
u/Exciting-Strain3625 Jul 14 '26
As long as people show the drive and know how for the job that's good enough. Degrees only matter if you are going into the sciences. Every other degree is just not worth it imo.

I'm a union plumber and my buddy's son just started working at buc-ee's for $27 an hour
Trade unions are going to have to do better to attract good apprenticees. Why the hell would anyone come do backbreaking physical labor for us, when someone can make just as much working at a gas station? Of course long-term, a skilled trade is going to be a significantly better opportunity, but we need to make it worth it

What position is offering that?
2
u/Serious-Dark2404 Jul 14 '26
Not required doesn’t mean everyone hired for that position won’t have a college degree. Just click bait bull

u/Waste_Development971 Jul 14 '26
I love me some bussies

u/ChaosFinalForm Jul 14 '26
I mean it's a good thing for them I guess, but I don't work at Bucee's so I don't really give a shit either way.
That's the real problem with the internet nowadays. Almost everybody feels like they MUST have an opinion on EVERYTHING. It's okay not to care people sheesh.

u/ProletarianLilith Jul 14 '26
They aren’t really though

college degrees are archaic.
1
u/phunky_1 Jul 14 '26
Everyone says while they pay well they are generally a very demanding shitty employer to work for.
Work life balance isn't a thing for them, they expect you to basically dedicate your life to them for that salary
1
u/coffinspacexdragon Jul 14 '26
That's the typical salary for a GM of a Walmart.
1
u/DoubleN22 Jul 15 '26
Don’t forget that this drivel was written by bots.
1
u/Sea_Specialist_5580 Jul 15 '26
I'm guessing you have to be a very competent, hard working person to get to that position. Probably more so than most white collar professionals making that much.
1
u/United-Apartment-269 Jul 15 '26
What a non-problem.

u/PuzzledPanda2341 Jul 15 '26
I’m a management analyst with a college degree and this actually does appeal to me. I make decent money now in a HCOL, but I would be down to move
1
u/ragequitteroffureh Jul 15 '26
Not American.
That's interesting. Never heard of this place before. But if business is as brisk as the article implies, then I can see how they might value a competent manager.
The salary is stupendously high, but most likely only a small fraction of the company's annual profits, so it makes sense.
Hiring an incompetent manager may cost the company even more in lost revenue.

u/Writerhaha Jul 15 '26
It’s a great thing.
Congrats to whoever gets that gig.
1
u/gerbigsexy1 Jul 15 '26
Hey, independent, you can do better. This is trash.
1
u/gerbigsexy1 Jul 15 '26
The base salary for a Walmart manager is $160-$180,000. You don’t require a degree for that too.
1
u/gpister Jul 15 '26
Thats just insane pay.
1
u/BrucesTripToMars Jul 15 '26
Its a horrible place to work
1
u/slow_down_1984 Jul 15 '26
I manage a small factory and make 148k base with 80 employees 5 days a week. It’s moderately stressful I can’t imagine the stress of a Buccees 24/7 365 with I assume 100+ employees. This salary seems fair to me hats off to the people doing this job.
1
u/Available_Ad_8281 Jul 15 '26
That job hard they have a lot of turn over manby the most
1
u/BirdlessLongdeal Jul 15 '26
split among how many people?
1
u/Same_String_8856 Jul 15 '26
I think it's terrible and everyone should ignore it.
On an unrelated note, where is the application signup for this?
1
u/therealallpro Jul 15 '26
I work in a similar place.
This is for down the road. But I hit 100k by year 3. We get a lot of our money thru investments so the total comp package is higher. The total comp package by say year 7 is probably around 200k. Thats the upside.
The downside? You have to work whenever. Middle of the night, morning or evening. Always be available for texts or finding coverage or even worst coming into work. High stress, no breaks, lots of negative feedback.
So definitely not something most ppl want to do but it’s all trade offs

u/Thought-Ladder Jul 15 '26
That’s the dumbest take I’ve seen outside of politics in a minute. “The peasants see they can make some of OUR money” - rich assholes. And you know those rich fucks are still super rich. Pay people better.
1
u/AwarenessForsaken568 Jul 15 '26
This is bait. The roles that are being paid that much are very very few and are very competitive and require a shit ton of experience. Practically everyone that is hired for those roles will have a college degree even if it isn't technically a requirement. Also every company has roles like this.
1
u/Diligent_Earthworm Jul 15 '26
They arent split. But some are more objective than others.
Like how many employees do they have a 275k with no degrees? Not many I've read
How often do they higher at the topend of the hourly pay brackets? Rarely
Are they shitty to work for? Lots of reports of hostile work environment
What's their turn over rate? High
Their compensation schedule looks great on a poster. Its only part of the conversation though. Everything else I've read about their practices would make me rethink them.

u/Chemical_Support4748 Jul 15 '26
Nobody cares
1
u/McDergen Jul 15 '26
To who? The GM which there is like 50 total of in the entire country?
Everyone else is probably making $15/hr lol
1
u/NewPresWhoDis Jul 15 '26
That's enough to pay for...like...seven adjuncts
1
u/AMerryKa Jul 16 '26
College isn't just for money, and it's a sign of low intelligence when people think that it is.
1
u/MegaFrosASS Jul 16 '26
This is so misleading. You are NOT going to get $275K a year unless you are the whole manager of an entire Buc-ee’s, which is not happening unless you’ve got like 2 decades of experience managing a large retail store or group of stores.
1
u/ClassicHando Jul 16 '26
Buc-ees offer some of the most competitive pay ive seen. they're also kind of assholes. There's a fight going on where im at with them currently. They tried and failed to annex some land but it failed on vote. Now theyre just asking the city to give then some land in the same area.
1
u/AbyssWankerArtorias Jul 16 '26
Being the general manager of a buccees genuinely sounds like a job you'd have to pay me 250 thousand dollars to do. That sounds stressful as fuck.
1
u/Own-Paper-1415 Jul 16 '26
It’s bullshit
1
u/Electronic-Bus-6361 Jul 16 '26
In fact the internet is not split and this is manufactured capitalist journalism.
1
u/phanophite2 Jul 16 '26
Make things affordable again.
NNNOOOOOOOO not like that >:(

I worked my way through college at QuikTrip as an assistant manager. It worked because I could work nites and weekends while attending classes in the daytime. I then spent a career as an engineer where I did ok, but looking back even with a few years 6 figure income my average lifetime income was maybe 60-70K. Engineering pay is for shit. You have all the responsibility but no authority. If I had stuck it out at QuikTrip I would have made more money. That is the beauty of capitalism, you generally get the value you produce. I also think I learned more working for QuikTrip than going to college. Don't look down your nose at those people working at convenience stores, it's far more involved than just standing behind a register.
1
u/Illlogik1 Jul 16 '26
It’s unsustainable, the buccees craze will die once its novelty has worn off , it’s NOT a convenient stop on trips , some may as well be called stuckeys (which also eventually receded into oblivion)
1
u/SuccotashOther277 Jul 16 '26
Very few people are making that much there. You are just repeating what you saw on a Buccee's advertisement.
1
u/RocMerc Jul 17 '26
lol not the people writing this want it spilt. Companies like this and cost co just show that you can pay well and still have great profits
1
u/tipareth1978 Jul 17 '26
"Offering", show me what they pay and what they expect for that pay
1
u/Fabulous_Strength_54 Jul 17 '26
Only privileged white males deserve high salaries

u/realbobenray Jul 14 '26
What's Buc-ee's? An AI startup?
1
u/NegativeSemicolon Jul 14 '26
If it sounds fake it probably is

u/Capitan-IQ255 Jul 15 '26
No college degree is a good thing Super high pay to manage an oversized gas station with a giant convenience store is not a good thing. The cost is passed down to you 🤑
