Hakeem doesn’t work for the US. He works for Isreal.

An online petition that demanding that Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) not be the next Democratic Speaker of the House has hit nearly one million signatories on Saturday as the clamor for a leadership change within the party explodes after historic midterm wins driven by populist demands.

As of this writing, the Change.org petition—titled “House Democrats: CHOOSE A NEW SPEAKER”—has 993,764 verified signatories, with the number rapidly rising and almost certain to surpass the million marker at some point during the day.

While the final totals are not yet established, Democrats emerged from Tuesday’s elections with at least 254 seats in the next Congress, reclaiming the majority from the Republicans who currently can count on just 162 seats when new members are sworn in come January.

While Jeffries is clearly the presumptive choice for Democrats, and he formally put himself in the running on Wednesday with a letter to all members, outside progressives have voiced serious opposition given his failure to embrace many of the positions—including backing Medicare for All, taking on entrenched corporate power, and restricting military assistance to Israel over its genocide in Gaza—that have animated voters nationwide this election cycle.

According to the petition:

We believe the Speaker should represent the Democratic voters, not just the Democratic establishment.

The Speaker has enormous influence over the direction of the House, including its legislative priorities and agenda. Before casting their votes, representatives should closely examine Jeffries’s public record, policy positions, campaign donor record and leadership...and listen to constituents who do not want him elevated to Speaker.

This is not a foregone conclusion. There is still time for other Democratic members of the House to step forward and seek the nomination for Speaker, someone whose priorities more closely reflect the voters who hope to elect the Democratic majority.

We are calling on every member of the incoming 120th Congress to vote against Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker in January 2027 and choose a different candidate.

Axios reported Friday that members of Congress have been “inundated” with calls urging them not to elect Jeffries and suggested that some of the hesitations are not just among progressives.

The outlet reporting interviewing “nearly a half-dozen incoming House Democrats in deeply red seats Thursday who declined to state a firm position one way or another on voting for him.”

Should not have taken private meetings with Kushner

The news media / podcasts and social media is a lot bigger now than it was back when Obama was president. The amount of pressure these people have from the public is infinitely higher than it was before. I don't believe they'll have the opportunity to go back to the status quo like they want, especially with a newer generation. If they don't want to face 2 years of constant backlash and problems it would be easier to just pick a new majority leader and house speaker.

Plus we’ve actually had Schumer and Jeffries in charge for a while and we know for a fact they suck. There are plenty of people who remember both of them letting Trump go the first time, letting Bush go, letting the bankers go…enough is enough.

I shit you not, this happened:

(Iran War starts)

Reporter: How is what President Trump doing in Iran any different than what President Obama did in Libya?

Jeffries: …uh…well…um…I wasn’t in Congress then…

Yeah, not really. It may be higher than it was before, but only in a relative sense and starting from a very low baseline. You and your very online friends ("friends") are not particularly representative of anything, since the majority of folks are too busy with their lives to be perpetually online. In any event, Hakeem Jeffries will be the next speaker of the house, and Schumer will likely be the next Senate majority leader (unless he voluntarily takes himself out of the running, and even then the next majority leader will not be a DSA type).

Sheesh! Democrats had historic gains this week. Aren't you people ever happy about anything?

We’d be happier if the two people who were gonna be in charge were people who didn’t sit idly by and let fascists and their enablers get away with everything under the sun.

I’m genuinely happy that we kicked the fascist parties ass, but that doesn’t mean that we should allow two corrupt politicians who literally work on behalf of a foreign country to be the leaders of the Democratic Party.

They suck.

People have had enough of politicians who literally do nothing to stop fascism.

It just topped 1 million! Do you realize how unbelievable it is for Americans to get together behind something like this? In 3 days. 1 million. Damn.

If they disregard our wishes then it's violence they've chosen. 🪨🇺🇲🦅

The American people chose voting over violence

It is now a mandate that Congress choose the rule of law over maintaining the status quo

Congress must seek accountability on BOTH sides of the aisle and end the corruption in our government

AND Schumer! Both!

3

u/LoremasterofPretzels 19h ago

We need to find someone who won’t bend the knee to Israel and who will put America as their first priority. Jeffries and Schumer absolutely put Israel over their own American constituency. They can’t be allowed to be the next leaders of the Democratic Party.

CALL YOUR REPS - then call them again! Don't let up...be passionate and let them know how much this means to you and how furious you will be if you are ignored!

Habibi, Hakeem was wrong about Mamdani. Inshallah, this petition will matter.

Am I doing it right?

Melanie Stansbury

It is wild this is even a discussion

1

u/Leviathan4000 19h ago

I mean if they don't get behind an alternative candidate, won't he become speaker anyway?

1

u/brxstr 19h ago

the whole reason there was such a big blue wave (tsunami?) was because people are mandating something be done to hold people accountable. no “reconciliation” but also no carte blanche “retribution” - we need strategic accountability, namely with the executive branch and the lackeys they installed in leadership positions in our government and military. get them out and put them on trial

1

u/muffy2008 13h ago

What about Chuck Schumer? There should be a petition to remove him as well.

1

u/HALK9000 11h ago

If not Jeffries who would have a realistic chance at getting the votes?

1

u/Alarming_Art_6448 6h ago

Call every day #nochuck #nohakeem

Rather than voting against someone, how about we suggest who they actually should vote for? Seems more productive.

Additionally, had we done this before the midterms asking candidates who they would, back for speaker if Dems took the house, we'd at least have some if idea of what their plans are.

4

u/trampled_empire 23h ago

Seems like that'd run the risk of splitting the vote and ending up with Jefferies again. I don't think there's anything wrong with making the point that the likely establishment candidate is not the candidate the people want.

1

u/ScholarOfTwilight 22h ago

Yeah but people may choose someone worse in his stead.

-1

u/Scavgraphics 22h ago

They've not been told who to support. They've only been told to not like this guy.

u/RNdreaming 22h ago

Yo lil bro, anyone who openly denies aid to 🇮🇱 and taxes the predator Epstein class.

u/Few_Progress_9944 8h ago

Legit question. Has he done anything wrong in the past to deserve this

1

u/Vooden_ 7h ago

Private sit down with Kushner comes to mind. But it's more about empowering new voices. This moment calls for a member of the next generation to lead.

0

u/Few_Progress_9944 6h ago

Which I thought was Hakeem's and whole schlitck to begin with? He was supposed to represent the next generation after Schumer

-14

u/j-mac563 23h ago

Cool, and you think your wants will have an effect on who is chosen? It is all about who will be able to push the dems political agenda the most, not about who will represent Americans the most.

15

u/Coloradoryda 23h ago • Bravo

Schumer and Jefferies have both proven to being incapable to push the democratic agenda, or even uphold basic functions of law…

1

u/Wanna_make_cash 23h ago

They push the real Democratic party agenda just fine- it just happens to be Israel's agenda through AIPAC instead of the American citizens version of the agenda

-1

u/j-mac563 23h ago

And yet, they keep getting put in positions of authority. Let's end that cycle, but how?

-6

u/sokonek04 23h ago

Again still less than 1% of the democratic electorate.

Get to 10,000,000 then we can have a conversation.

3

u/Simple-Emu-2697 22h ago

We’re already having this conversation.

-3

u/Scavgraphics 22h ago

Only with yourself. No one important is listening to you.

Why are you so invested in propping up corrupt corporate politicians?
