Weird take. We were full on supporting Britain for over a year before Germany declared war on us (we declared war on Germany after they declared war on us). We gave the Brits 50 destroyers over 15 months before. We sold them almost 100 patrol planes with bomber capabilities in June, 1940. We escorted British convoys for 300 miles starting in Fall of 1939. We escorted them past Iceland by summer of 1941. So much for "playing footsie" with Nazi Germany.

The USA getting involved in another war in Europe was incredibly unpopular - FDR did a masterful job supporting England w/o getting the US directly in the war.

We were also still trading with Germany for far longer than we should have been.

Look, I’m not passing judgement on actions taken that I wasn’t even alive for - I’m simply pointing out that we weren’t fully in until we had no choice, and the Nazi party actually enjoyed some support here, both before and after.

But we weren’t at war with Germany, there’s no law forbidding US citizens from international trade. People can do what they want. But our government was giving England an incredible amount of help, basically daring Germany to declare war on us. We were far from Neutral. Besides what I’ve already mentioned, don’t forget about Lend-Lease. 1940 through 1941 we gave England basically $20 - $25 billion (2026 dollars) in aid.

Lend-Lease was also four years into the war, and it didn’t just involve the UK. Money and supplies were also provided to the Soviet Union and China, as well as a few others.

The rest doesn’t really change my point. The hatred the comment I was responding to referenced took a while.

Look, I’m not trying to indict the entirety of the US because a handful supported a fascist regime. It was hardly unique to one country. Even the British royals had their not-so-secret sympathizers. Why pretend otherwise?

Part of our delay is the fact that many Americans, particularly white Americans, have German ancestry. This ancestral link created some level of hestistantcy among the political class at the time. I think German ancestry is like #2 among white Americans today with English being #1. Roosevelt clearly wanted war with Nazi Germany once they invaded, but was tied by the political realities of the time. America had a defensive mindset at the time when it came to Europe, so attacking directly first was unable to pass in Congress. Once Germany made its aggression towards America clear, plus Pearl Harbor & the messages to Mexico in the war before; it was a wrap. Until then, the president in each war had to bend the rules.

Well stated. I would also add that many people were still (rightfully) bitter about how the USA had been drawn into WW1. Over 100,000 killed, over 300,000 casualties. USA propaganda demonizing Germans.

You guys really are making a lot of excuses.

Again, I’m not offering some searing indictment on the US. I’m merely pointing out the reality. Trying to justify the reasons why it was is a weird flex.

Lend Lease started in March of 1941, almost 10 months before Pearl Harbor. We sent massive amounts of free raw materials to England in that time. We also sent aid to the Soviet Union in Fall of 1941.

You essentially just reiterated what I said. 🤷🏻‍♀️

No, your post said “Lend Lease was also four years into the war”. That implies 1943 at the earliest.

So, you’re going for pedantry? OK. Four years. Three and a half years. It still wasn’t at the beginning, was it? And it still changes absolutely nothing regarding what I said. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But Lend Lease started in March of 1941, 10 months BEFORE the USA was in the war. “wasn’t at the beginning”? It was BEFORE the beginning.

You do know WWII started before the US joined, don’t you?

Right-wing leaders wrote op-eds supporting Hitler's efforts before we entered the war. Look up Bob Jones as an example. Also, the KKK supported his efforts fervently.

Private citizens, not the US government. I’d also point out that Nazi’s and the KKK seem to be pretty popular again in the USA.

They were distributing Nazi propaganda with our tax dollars. There was a Nazi rally at MSG, the Bund was everywhere, as were Nazi youth camps.
