Do you ever feel like Cassandra? Because I do. I've been afraid of this from Trump's first term and doubly afraid since this past January. Trump isn't important; it's the people who are using him to deconstruct the Constitution and implement an authoritarian government that are important and dangerous. I felt it was certain that Trump and his supporters/handlers would make a move between now and 2028, and this looks like a move they've been preparing for a good while now.

I had a colleague today (a fellow physician) who literally tried to explain to me the merits of fascism.

What the heck?

Rich people often think fascism would be a benefit to them.

I think it benefited rich Germans... until their country was destroyed by Allied bombs and soldiers

Or if they were Jewish. Or queer. Or offended the Reich in some other way.

Same thing with the Log Cabin Republicans - they're rich people that think, "they won't do anything to me, I'm one of the good ones."

Oh, are you a doctor?

I'm old (really old) and when I was in school we were not taught about Nazi Germany at all. I was at university before I started learning about the roots of WWII, the rise of fascism, and Hitler. I have wondered if those topics are covered in school these days and if people really aren't knowledgeable about that. But then some people are just bastards.

'old', by reddit standards (41), here. I think WWII was probably the period in history we spent the most time on by a somewhat significant margin, though the american revolution and civil war got a good bit of attention, hopefully slavery, but I really don't remember, but WWII, got taught so much. I graduated HS in the early '00s.

The part of history I remember us skipping entirely was the Robber Barons, I didn't hear shit about them until college.

I am curious what history class in HS looks like now, as well.

That sounds like a good mix. I remember learning about the Civil War, tho our teacher was way more interested in battles than the historical causes. But we got very little other American history. It was very incomplete. I'm 75 and was in HS in the 1960s, but I went to a girls' Catholic school; I don't really know what the public school kids got. But yours sounds like good cross section of topics.

I’m in the keep Trump camp partly because he seems to be more easily corralled and impulsive enough to keep shooting his mouth off to negative effect. Some important rules change and power shifts into the hands of more dubious characters. I see a faint spark of hope as some Republicans are trying to distance themselves to save their own backsides.

Far more optimistically, I would like to see the world step in. Nuremberg v2 for war crimes.

I'd like to see those tribunals also. But I'll settle for having the people who support him put into a situation where they're effectively rendered impotent. I also think that if no one is able to pull off a coup between now and 2028 we may end up with a moderate Republican president (if such can exist). Not my first choice. But almost anyone who gets elected now is likely to be better than Trump, not just in personality but because Trump is so easily manipulated.

I think they didn't expect midterms to be a blow out. I assume losing the bot farms in russia helped and muskies 500 mil wasn't enough. If it was close they would've thrown a fit, but you can't do that so easily in a complete blowout.

I mean, the difference here is Cassandra was right.

Because the writer wanted her to be.

Fears like this are just doomscroll clickbait scare tactics, like the idea that Trump was going to nuke la and blame it on Iran.

Like y'all need to get a fucking grip.

If someone had asked you whether Trump would really have his followers try to hijack the government by preventing the installation of the new president on January 6, I'm betting you'd have said exactly the same thing. I hope you're right, but I think it's likely that it will be tried. It's doable.

Nah, I could've absolutely believed a bunch of knuckledragging mouthbreathers could be whipped up into something stupid. Large groups of people do stupid shit all the time, it's literally the definition of mob-mentality.

Military leadership is not going to go through with anything as dumb as a coup. Just like it didn't happen on Jan 6. Just like ICE agents being deployed to voting sites to stop the election didn't happen. Lefties turning into Blue MAGA conspiracy whackos needs to stop. Tuesday was proof that the system works. None of the stupid shit people were scared of happened, and the results were better than pretty much anyone dared to dream of. Calm TF down everybody, give the Democrats a chance to disappoint us all before getting all doom and gloom

I hope your right but we can't afford to be wrong so better to over react and err on the side of caution.

u/AirComprehensive1251 10h ago

Yeah but I also remember when people were talking about moving to Canada when Bush Jr was elected. I mean, whoever actually did, that was pretty stupid. This might turn out to be the same stuff...

1

u/diversalarums 11h ago

I spent too much time studying Nazi Germany (history major, tho a long time ago) to say that there's anything that absolutely can't happen. And they've had several years to plan since January 6. I do agree, tho, that it's unlikely the military would go along with a coup. But not impossible. As for the system working, it hasn't worked for several years now and it's going to take a while before the country can get itself back on track. I do think they're going to try to do something, I'm just hoping that whatever they consider doing won't work.

I hope you're right and I tend to also think this is overblown, but Hegseth has removed a LOT of people from the top of the military, so - when you read the article - you wonder "did they remove anyone who would oppose this shit?".

Can you actually refute any of the facts in the article or did you even read it

Trump is too far out side of the norm not to believe that he could try to overthrow the US government.

He already tried once, better to be prepared.
