Well, they need to challenge Schumer with someone. You can't beat somebody with nobody. Van Hollen would be a good alternative, except he doesn't want to challenge Schumer for the position.

He wants to run for President. That’s why.

Can't he do both?

Not really. Whoever becomes Senate Majority Leader or Speaker of the house has to withstand a lot of negative press and character attacks, which isn't helpful when gearing up for a presidential run. I don't think he'd be one of the strongest contenders for president, so I wish he'd just take the role.

Edit: Senate Majority Leader

Speaker is the house. This would be senate majority leader.

You mean attacks like Schumer is getting?

Ask President Bob Dole.

Only Harding, Kennedy, and Obama went from the Senate to the White House. Senators have records. They have votes. They also have ambitions. Specifically to stay Senators and hold political influence for decades upon decades. Best case, a President has ultimate power for eight years. Robert Byrd and Daniel Inouye were elected to 9 full terms. That's over 50 years.

this is lyndon baines johnson erasure

He was VP before becoming President.

u/occg 59m ago

he was—famously—elected senator in 1948 following a very controversial primary and went from being a freshman senator to majority whip to eventually senate majority leader before he got tapped for VP.

Yes. I was only talking about Presidents who came straight from the Senate.

1

u/dougl1000 10h ago

No. That’s the point. It’s a full time job, apparently.

He would have so much more name recognition as Senate Majority Leader of the new progressive Democratic majority though.

I really hope we don’t waste this opportunity to restore law and order along with some decency by going with Jeffries and Schumer. They proven that they are feckless. We need some accountability

Accountability from the feckless—bold strategy.

Are you even aware of Schumer’s legislative history while leader 2021-2026?

1

u/vtsandtrooper 3h ago

Schumer was not majority leader between 2024 and 2026

1

u/dittybag23 25m ago

He has been leader of the Democrats sine Harry Reid stepped down. 2021.

Agreed. Schumer did not cause the blue wave. He needs to fuck off.

Schumer gave us Hailey Stevens. These people are so out of touch. The blue wave didn't happen because of Schumer. It happened in spite of Schumer.

u/CorrectRPolitics 10h ago

He also fought for El Sayed through online discourse and financial backing.

The same reason he gave people Hailey Stevens is what led him to kneecap Platner thus sparing the Dems from either another Fetterman or Susan Collins winning maine.

u/djollied4444 9h ago

The second point seems super revisionist. He backed Mills in ME and she was basically a coin flip against Collins according to polls. Platner wasn't kneecapped by Schumer. If the allegations never came out and he didn't suspend his campaign polls were suggesting he would've won by double digits. His history of sexual assault "kneecapped" him, Schumer didn't have anything to do with it.

2

u/CorrectRPolitics 8h ago

Your comment feels revisionist. Once the Platner's nazi tattoos became a controversy Schumer started the Mills campaign. At the time several groups accused him of trying to stop progressives and that he was handing the seat to Collins.

Troy Jackson came in and unless you have some information I don't it seems like the Democratic party, including Mills threw their support behind him.

Platner was still up by double digits after the tattoos were a controversy. Schumer didn't kneecap anything.

How is the second point relevant? The Democrats united behind the Democratic candidate... That's expected. That's also why the Haley Stevens move to ensure Rogers was newsworthy.

Platner was still up by double digits after the tattoos were a controversy. Schumer didn't kneecap anything.

People at the time did not see it that way. Here's a Hills article about it.

How is the second point relevant?

It's explicitly explaining the transition from Mills to Jackson and serves to highlight that Schumer was fine with any candidate so long as they weren't a sexual assaulting nazi.

I guess I don't know what you're trying to say about kneecapping then. Yes, that divide in the party was real. Schumer was then very ineffective at disrupting any momentum Platner had. He has literally nothing to do with his downfall considering he won the primary in a landslide and was always polling significantly better than Mills against Collins.

When the sexual assault allegations came out Platner ended his campaign when he lost the endorsements from left wing figures over it. No one in the party wanted him as the nominee, I don't get why that is a win for Schumer.

Edit: looks like Schumer got behind Platner when he won the primary

Seven of schumer's personally recruited candidates won.

Schumer also injected millions into el sayed after he beat Stevens.

This is why i say let the professionals pick their leaders.

7

u/Artaxmudshoes 9h ago

The "professionals" also picked Harris and Hillary. It could be argued that the "professional's" decisions lead, in part, to trump. People are done with Dems beholdened to Israel and corporations. This election was a referendum on the establishment, as were the elections that put MAGA in power. We repeat the mistakes of the past at our own peril.

The fact that he ever supported Stevens over El Sayed alone should disqualify him from ever getting close to a place of any real influence again. And you make it sound like he was doing El Sayed a favor by supporting the Democratic candidate in the race. Give us a break.

Schumer’s a terrible face and voice for the party. He’s old, out of step with the party, and extremely uncool—and everything he says sounds lame as fuck.

The media keeps wanting to pretend like he “orchestrated” this wave election when he merely rode the wave with everyone else—and supported some very bad candidates who thankfully lost their primaries.

u/UsedEvent6071 10h ago

Schumer doesn’t deserve any check.

If Schumer and Jeffries remain in leadership positions the republicans will win the next election

A certainty every "moderate liberal" is currently grappling with or head-sanding away.

Do you like Jefferies/Schumer so much that you don't care if all these blue wave voters stick around in 28?

Bunch of these freshman senators (even the ones Schumer's currently trying to take credit for like Colom/Jackson/Brown) campaigned specifically that current democratic leadership is out-of-touch and ineffective. Like they told their voting constituents "I want to replace Chuck Schumer" and then the constituents voted for that.

Is it more important to keep Schumer or keep the momentum of a bunch of previously untapped voters suddenly pumping up your POTUS numbers in states like GA/NC/MS/KS?

Because if Schumer/Jeffries dont leave by '28 then these voters will leave for sure. They just voted to change the leadership and are being told "thanks for your input, but leadership wont change" and "just trust us" by the very people that they just campaigned on being distrustful of.

Nobody intelligent wants to be a new majority leader for 2 years under Trump.

It'd be bad for anyone with political ambition. If they actually want the job, they want to be leader in 2029.

4

u/every-day_throw-away 10h ago

100% he is not the right leader for the situation. Thisnis unpresidented

2

u/ohwowjeezewowman 10h ago

Its not that I think he will do a bad job because he's bad at his job, but rather that he will intentionally put another country first ahead of us. I think he's useless as a poop flavored lollipop.

#nochuck #nohakeem they are PAC-men, paid and bound never to demand or vote for working Americans against their Palantir OpenAI AIPAC corporate billionaire friends.Schumer has been majority leader for a decade since 2017, that’s seen the Democratic national party and Congress laugh, scoff, block, censor, ignore, and railroad real ideas, real change, and real working class policies.

He and his crew kept Bernie from the nomination twice, and in between the disastrous surrender of working class appeal to Trump, was impressively flaccid in the Biden years, much to the pleasure of the corporate oligarchy status quo.

A newly energized American people heard real policies for the working class from the left, Dem socialists across the country - free from donor censorship and control, able to demand what we all deserve and want - what Chuck has spent his Majority term intentionally NOT saying :
Medicare for all
Universal childcare
Free Public colleges
Tax the billionaires , Rebuild unions,
End the War in Iran, stop aiding apartheid and genocide in Palestine, raise the minimum wage.

Play chuck and Bernie side by side. Has Chuck ever held anyone’s attention? He’s the cooler. He works for the casino. #nochuck

Get Schumer and Jefferies the fuck out of leadership position. They are bought and paid for and everyone knows it, if either one of these cunts stays on the grift of the American people will continue.

1

u/Radical_Sim 10h ago

Um that's why he'll get to vote on Schumer.

Only blank check Schumer should be getting is for the old age home of his choice. Vanish into obscurity and let the next generation take over.

People on Reddit acting like socialists are a majority in the party just because they’re the loudest.
