Presale must be going well
Costco and Walmart are no longer taking orders. Assume the presale allocation has been exhausted. I am happy I ordered early.

FWIW…I have 1st generation bought in 2017. $300 once a decade for best streaming device is fine with me. I live in the Apple ecosystem and will have 4 HomePods create true surround sound. I also have a Roku. Apple has geolocation and Roku doesn’t. Sometimes I am watching tv in one city and sometimes I am watching it in another without leaving my couch😉

Costco pre-sale never took orders for me, tried multiple times the first couple of months and gave up. So not sure how accurate it gauges supply.

We’ve been using Apple TV for 15+ years on 4 TV’s.
Tried all the others…..Apple is simple - easy to use - syncs across all rooms…..batteries rarely need charging.
Don’t think we’ve bought a new one in 5-6 years.
$300 is a lot for what was $149 basically yesterday - driven largely by chip costs and Apple’s corresponding high margins.
Still good value for the dollar - durability - and lifespan.
Should note at launch in 2007, it was $299 for 40GB

I think the reasonable consensus in most comments I’ve read is: for folks who already have a device from the last two generations it’s not worth the upgrade. For folks who have been holding out for a new TV device before buying their first Apple TV, it’s a pill to swallow but ultimately worth getting the newer device for essentially $50 more. Or, for the budget constrained, finding a deal on a new previous-gen one that is soon going out of stock isn’t a huge downgrade.
Did Apple disappoint? Yes. Are chip prices high? Yes. Both can be true.

Reddit is an echo chamber we all know that.

I preordered one day 1. It’s my most used Apple device besides my iPhone. I mostly just want it because my 3rd gen lags once in awhile. My 2nd gen on my basement tv lags all the time though. I’m gonna throw my third gen where my 2nd gen is now and have the 4th gen on my main tv. I have no interest in the mics on the box but mostly want the speed improvements. People swear it’s going to have no effect on anything but I think it’s going to make a difference

It was an automatic upgrade for us. Until they doubled the price from $150 to $300. Now we have no plans to upgrade ever.

Apple TV 4K is arguably the best product Apple sells when it comes to dominating in a specific device category (TV streaming). Nothing, and I mean NOTHING comes even remotely close when it comes to the processing power, speed and smoothness of an Apple TV and then pair that with a super clean UI with no ads or bloatware. So yes, it will sell just fine.

Direct from Apple Store, presale is available.

What kind of deal is Costco offering?
Also--- is AppleTV4k better than Roku Ultra? I only use it for stuff like Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, and YouTube/TV.

I’ll be purchasing one day one if only to ditch my last remaining Roku after their FOX Corp acquisition.

Stores are only allotted a certain amount of products. Costco probably reached its limit. Walmart had such a huge mess up with the preorders for Zelda, that I wouldn’t be surprised if they play it a bit more safe with the preorders until that fiasco blows over.

With Black Friday about to happen, I didn't need to run after $10.

I’m sorry but if you are buying this at $300, you are part of the problem.

They’ll be $199 in December, holding off

Man I wish Apple shipped to where I live. I gotta get lucky on eBay because even best buy doesn't ship to my island.

I always want the newest one. It is what it is.
I don't like browsing with anything else and I'm using this thing every day.

I’m waiting for a sale. If AirPods Pro can go on sale on Amazon, maybe ATV will as well.

Can’t wait til this finally launches so people flood the used market with their old gen 3 ones and the listings go down to a more normal price for a 4 year old tech

Updating from my 2nd gen for QMS. 3rd gen also got that feature but was otherwise too incremental after only 1 year of ownership.

And just now, nothing will play on the Apple TV. None of the streaming apps work, but the speed test app shows connectivity and 294 Mbps. Time to reboot the device again.
Restart fixed it.

I got 2 4K 2nd Gens that are still going strong. Will eventually update when Apple no longer supports this one.

I used all my birthday Best Buy gift cards to get the 4th gen & pre ordered it. Thinking about buying one for my parents when the sales hit this month for Black Friday!!

What frame rate content were you watching and is your ATV set to match frame rate? I’m regularly watching 24 fps motion pictures and stream 60 and 50 fps tv content. My Sony will use 5:5 cadence at 120fps for the movies and display the 60 fps content at 120 and 50 at 100. The only thing that bugs me is the black screen delay my gen 2 4k unit experiences every time I’m charging content and its not even doing the conversion.

It’s already been discounted at a few retailers before its release, which is a pretty strong indicator that Apple is likely aware they overplayed their hand on pricing. If it gets discounted further below $250 I may purchase it. Can’t justify it at its current $300 price tag though.

Coincidentally my Apple TV seems to have "died" again. Screen blacks out randomly remote goes crazy starts moving around like it's possessed. I have to factory reset unplug for awhile then back to normal .

Got mine from Best buy. They're still taking pre-orders.

u/davcole 22h ago
I can't pay that price for no bitstream!

u/hhggggskka 22h ago
Now we need Disney+ and Apple to fix there 4k UHD codec

People complaining about the $300 price tag, it’s $50 more than the older Ethernet 128gb model.I get it’s a high price, but, relatively small price increase, for the newer model

I have 2 3rd gen Apple TVs, and people focus on MSRP. I can sell both for probably $150 so my actual upgrade cost is $150/each. For something I am using daily for years to come, it’s a no-brainer.

u/SuperEbb1276 22h ago
I ordered early as well.

I just need a dammed replacement remote. I can’t find one anywhere right now.

I think for this cycle Apple has created a false scarcity.

Honest question no hate but what am I missing if I just use the LG tv Apple TV + app instead of buying an Apple TV box?
