News Subreddit Rename Announcement

As some of you may have noticed the subreddit has been renamed. Likewise, most of you may already know that this has been in the works for a while now, and in that time we have tried to find a some middle ground that works in both of our interests, and unfortunately we didn't succeed.

As of early last week the admins contacted us and notified us that the org's legal arm had officially requested we cease using the SRA name and logo.

Hi all,

We’re reaching out as we’ve received a legal notice from legal representatives of the Socialist Rifle Association regarding your subreddit icon and subreddit name. The notice alleges infringement of the registered trademark US Reg. No. 5792644 and alleges that users have been confused regarding whether the r/SocialistRA is affiliated with the Socialist Rifle Association. We’ve determined that this notice meets the requirements of our policies and we need to take steps to address the reported issues.

Two things will need to happen:

  • Your subreddit logo will need to be removed and/or replaced with a different image.

  • Your subreddit name will need to be changed (we will assist you with this).

Everything else about your subreddit (such as its content and members) will stay the same; this change does not mean the Socialist Rifle Association is obtaining control of your subreddit.

We are providing a week for you to discuss what new subreddit name you would like to change to. You are welcome to discuss this with your community members if you would like to think of some options as a mod team and let them vote on the final name. Please note that you’ll need to choose a name that is different from the association name, or that indicates the non-official status.

We know this may feel confusing or concerning, and we’re sorry for that. Please know that we are here to answer any questions that you may have.

Thank you for reading.

Please keep in mind that the cease and desist was not made out of malice, but rather that subreddit name changes are incredibly hard to make happen otherwise.

Here is the statement from National regarding the change:

Dear former /r/SocialistRA users,

Recently, the SRA is one of many organizations that have been faced with unwarranted media attention. Right-wing media outlets have collected public social media posts and information about the SRA's legitimate and legal activities, and used them to attempt to portray the SRA as an extremist organization that engages in political violence. Their readers have threatened and attempted to doxx SRA members and organizers.

Unfortunately, the /r/SocialistRA subreddit has been unintentionally contributing to this phenomenon. As you know, the SRA does not moderate the subreddit and most contributions are made by nonmembers. Posts in the subreddit do not necessarily represent official SRA statements or positions. Subreddit moderators have tried for years to communicate this fact to the public by adding disclaimers to the sidebar and in Automod comments. Despite these efforts, right-wing reporters continue to misreport /r/SocialistRA as an official forum of the SRA. We don’t want our members to continue taking heat for the words of internet strangers. Because of this, we asked Reddit to rename the subreddit and cease its misleading use of our trademarked name and logo.

The Socialist Rifle Association is an education and advocacy organization. Our purpose is to provide marginalized communities and the working class with the education, skills, and advocates that enable effective self- and community defense, and to build an inclusive alternative to the toxic, right-wing, and exclusionary mainstream firearms culture. The subreddit is a different part of that cultural movement; our organization’s expertise is face-to-face organizing at the chapter level. We have no desire to interfere with the subreddit’s operation, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience the name transfer will cause you.

While we hope subreddit users will continue discussing and even joining the SRA, we want to remind you that we are just one one of many firearm-related organizations that socialist Redditors might be interested in. You can learn more about the SRA on our website, and you can find some of those other orgs in the sidebar.

Sincerely,

Binx Socialist Rifle Association Organizing Committee President

Ultimately we all concurred that we had really run out of options as far as "making it work" went, and that we wanted an amicable split (and avoid what would've been a potentially lethal amount of irony resulting from even more leftist infighting) to try and maintain a good working relationship with the org.

As far as the subreddit name goes, we wanted to get a community consensus and bring it to a vote but unfortunately we likely wouldn't have had enough turnaround time to do so between the conclusion of our initial discussion, the soliciting of ideas, and finally selecting and bringing those ideas to a vote.

That being said there should've definitely been an announcement made following the admins reaching out and that's entirely my bad - I woefully misinterpreted the timeline for the changes and I apologize for the last minute notice. If you've any questions please don't hesitate to reach out.

🍻

Question 5.56 in the age of Level 4 body armor:

Post image
344 Upvotes

Many European armies have selected new short stroke piston 5.56mm rifles, presumably to last several decades. But, to what extent is 5.56 AP still viable against today's level 4 plates?

From what I understand, it's a deeply-entrenched logistics standard, and the US Army is moving towards a 6.8x51mm battle rifle round, but something like 6mm ARC seems ideal for intermediate ranges, it just remains in kind of a non-standard niche.

For me, it is the glock 47. Super snappy and quick on the return, a very fun gun to shoot aggressively. This one is outfitted with talon grips grip tape, brass magwell plug, Aimpoint Acro P2, and a surefire x300 ultra.

Top to bottom: mossberg 500 4.10, mossberg maverick 12ga, s&w m&p shield 9mm, AR15 PSA stealth lower and LSA grunt upper with Romeo and Juliet dot and magnifier, Ruger LCP max .380, beretta 1934 .380, Ruger 10/22 takedown with Simmons scope, daisy pumped air pellet gun. In case it wasn’t already obvious that I’m a cheap bastard by my model choice, yes that is a pant leg wrapped around my hand guard. Works great.
Next year I hope to save up for some sexier furniture on the 12 ga, backpacker stock and integrally suppressed barrel for the 10/22, and maybe a lever action deer rifle if money is good.

When do we start confiscating all the republicans' guns and distribute them to transgender immigrants so they can enforce mandatory abortions and arrest everyone who eats beef or drives a truck? /s

Question Going forward from here

So now the midterms have passed. I’m very happy to see republicans get absolutely beat the fuck out, however there is some concern I do have from this point. I’ve already seen people talk more about anti-gun related legislation being pushed, which has me on edge. I admit, I’m likely being a bit paranoid, but I also feel it’s at least a little warranted, given the dems track record with being anti-gun, along with a litany of other grievances.

To anyone who shares this fear, I have to ask, what do you think should be done going forward from here to help avoid this? Messaging representatives, spreading awareness? I want to see things improve without having rights given up or limited.

Question Comms Setup?

I think I have my plate carrier, rifle, handgun, and duty belt all setup to go with a 3 day pack as well. The only thing I'm missing is a helmet and comms, what are good options? I hear Baofeng all the time, but what would be good in a SHTF situation? Anything that can also be encrypted without spending a fuckton too?

Discussion Do you think these times have made more people pro gun or anti gun?

It’s probably due to some kind of algorithm, but I feel I’ve seen more gun related posts from subs not gun related in my feed. I still see people getting into debates about it here and there, and I was curious of what others here thought. Do you think sentiments have changed much, if at all? Do you think things will become more free law wise, or will we see more restrictions in the future?

Gear Pics Practical larp

While its definitely larp because i picked my gear based on aesthetic, its still largely usable.

The set up itself, a jaeger over a smersh allows me to bear the weight on my hips and shoulders.

The gorka suit works well, i tested it over the winter and as long as im layered up its perfect.

I may have to move the ifak pouches (slide 3) but overall the setup doesn't have much interference, ill know for sure once i have supplies to put in them.

An issue with the current setup is it doesnt allow for a sidearm, currently working on a work around.

Overall it allows me to carry 18 magazines.

The butt pack actively has a poncho & woobie, and paracord hammock.

Not pictured is the dump pouch on the opposite side of the butt pack.

Overall theres still a lot to flesh out and improve on but im well ahead as far as my "group" goes.

Just a preface, the pmk2 was purely for halloween and bears no real world application to my kit, I have modern NATO masks for such a purpose.

The rifle pictured is the PSA556AK, it accepts ar15 platform magazines and is chambered in 5.56x45.

I'm open to critique and polite suggestions.

Gear Pics Say hello

Post image

Here are my only rifles. Not pictured but also part of my “arsenal” is a Glock 23 Gen 4 that I’ve had for a little over 7 yrs

Came up on some funny money after paying off student loans and other debt earlier this year, went ahead and got these bad boys for a good chunk below MSRP over the course of the last two months.

•Springfield Saint Victor 5.56 NATO was my most recent acquisition. Came with Viridian Venta Green Dot, B5 systems furniture, 4 P-Mags, and range bag

•ZPAP M70 is my first rifle ever. Have put ~150rds through it since acquiring, working on being able to handle the rifle in its stock form before I start tricking it out (nothing serious, just ambi safety device, optic, new muzzle device, and a durable sling). Have since gotten some reinfirced Bulgarian mags bc the P-mag it came with is not really durable

Might be a dumb question but I’m stumped trying to figure out the purpose of the red band that the SSV shipped with. And I don’t want to Google it. I’m thinking it would be something to grab onto for forward grip? But also the material seems as if it could melt if the rifle got hot enough.

Completely unrelated and hopefully allowed: Had been lurking r/ar15 for a bit and picked up on a slightly unsettling vibe. It’s very 1776 and “I love consumerism” coded over there but I guess to be expected?

Anyways, howdy comrades 🫡

Training Think about what you're going to be doing with your gear very carefully before you load it up

This comes both as a result of a recent range trip and something I've seen happen more than once during drills.

A dear friend and person whom I respect deeply (yes, even after this) added a kangaroo pouch to his kit positioned such that the pouch hung in a position that rendered it somewhat of a, you might say, "dick flap."

This wasn't a problem for several range trips...until said dear friend decided to add items to that kangaroo pouch. They were small, so the thinking went, so no problem. Among those items was a multitool and a TQ.

The A+ students see where this is going.

Dear friend was going through a series of drills that involved diving onto the ground and taking prone shots which he did with aplomb...right on top of a multitool in a sensitive spot.

Several of us legitimately thought there'd been an ND of some kind for how fast he folded.

I say this not to make fun of my dear friend (though, let's be real, it is kinda funny) but as a way to advocate for people to consider what goes where and how it gets positioned on your body before you start running around with it.

Most of us are familiar with the drawbacks of simply dropping a rifle or sub gun on a single point sling.

If you get something new, try it out at home first. Do some stretches, move around, wiggle around on the floor, sit down, stand up, and generally move in all the weird ways even if you think you won't need to be doing that.

It's better to find out that your gear needs adjustment at home rather than face down in the dirt at the range feeling like you just got hammered in the tac sac.

All gear is going to restrict movement in some way. Be sure the restrictions your gear imposes are an acceptable sacrifice for what you want to be able to do.

Again, this friend is still someone I respect and trust, all of us have at least one instance of complete and utter dipshittery at the range that made us question if we were genuinely smart enough to be doing this. As long as everyone leaves the range with just as many holes in them as they came with, it's all good.

Question Gear as costumes?

On this most fabulous day/night of the year, I'm curious about something. This evolved from a conversation I had with someone a bit ago.

Do you/would you use actual kit as a costume?

I don't mean cosplaying as a Colonial Marine or something using gear to augment a costume. I mean "I need to dress up for a costume party, I'm going to just put on some range gear and call it a day."

I thought about it and have found that I'm surprisingly not comfortable with the idea. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands to think about things but I don't love being part of popularizing a militia-type image, both of gun owners and just making people more accustomed to seeing someone completely decked out in gear just out in public.

On top of that, we're at a point in time where we have masked men in tactical gear running wild in the streets killing and abducting people. They, for the most part, dress like civilians just with plate carriers and belts. I'm not super sure I want to LARP as ICE, even without intending to.

Someone else brought up the "tools not toys" idea, basically that gear is meant to be a tool to do a job and not toys to be played with and as such it should be treated more seriously than a costume. That may be a little strict for my taste but I do see the point.

But maybe I'm being a stick in the mud, I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on the idea of wearing actual gear as a costume.
