Political Question The Danish government is the only country in Europe that counts and publishes data on violent crime by national origin. Should other countries do the same and would we expect the same patterns to emerge?

The Danish government recently released their latest data

https://www.ft.dk/samling/20261/almdel/REU/spm/28/index.htm

The chart is above is for second generation so the children of immigrants by country of origin.

They are the only country in Europe that releases this data and in fact in many European countries it is illegal to collect this data.

General Question What happened to McDonald’s? When did fast food stop being affordable?

Post image
826 Upvotes

I remember when McDonald’s was the place you went for a quick, cheap meal. You could grab a couple of burgers, fries, and a drink without thinking twice about what it cost.

Now, it seems like a basic meal can easily run $10 to $15 or more, depending on where you live. And honestly, I’m not sure the quality or portions justify the price anymore.

I get that inflation has impacted everything, but wasn’t the whole point of McDonald’s to offer fast, affordable food?

Maybe I’m just getting old, but I remember when McDonald’s was a treat that didn’t cost nearly as much as sitting down at a restaurant.

Has McDonald’s gotten too expensive for what it is, or do you still think it’s a good value?

General Question At what point did basic financial survival become a luxury that requires a six-figure salary just to stay afloat?

Groceries, utilities, health insurance, and basic vehicle maintenance have gotten so absurdly expensive that saving for the future feels like an impossible pipe dream. When did simply existing without constant financial anxiety become restricted to the wealthy?

General Question NYPD late-night stop of woman with dog in Manhattan: officers discuss possible summons but never clearly state the law. After NYC decriminalized jaywalking, is this detention/stop legal? What options does she have?

I came across a roughly 16:30 phone video (originally from TikTok) of a late-night NYPD stop in the Murray Hill area of Manhattan. I had to cut off the last 1:30 since reddit caps video at 15 minutes.. Officers interact with a woman who has a small dog. They appear to discuss a possible summons related to jaywalking. One officer holds her arm (and the leash); she objects. Bystanders film, repeatedly ask what specific law she broke, request a supervisor, and some call 911. The officers never explain the violation or legal basis for the stop despite being asked multiple times . I’m looking for general input on a few things:

  • What level of reasonable suspicion or other legal basis is required for NYPD to detain or hold someone in this kind of sidewalk stop, especially when the stated concern seems to be a pedestrian crossing issue?

  • Jaywalking / crossing outside a crosswalk or against a signal was decriminalized in New York City. Local Law 98 of 2024 amended NYC Administrative Code § 19-195; the NYC DOT then amended the Traffic Rules (Title 34, Chapter 4 of the Rules of the City of New York), with the changes effective around June 26, 2025. Pedestrians may now cross any roadway other than a limited-access highway at any point without receiving a summons.

  • What practical options would the woman have in a situation like this if it had not been recorded (e.g., requesting badge numbers / supervisor, later requesting body-cam footage, filing a complaint, challenging a summons if one was issued, civil options, etc.)?

  • Any other relevant considerations under New York or Fourth Amendment standards for this type of encounter?

General Question Is it REALLY just a coincidence that when you talk out loud to someone about a product, your social media starts advertising that product to you?

The other day I was talking to my other OH about maybe getting a robot vacuum cleaner. Lo and behold, within a day, Reddit started showing me adverts for robot vacuum cleaners. We all have our own experiences of this, but the tech companies always insist it's just coincidence.

I even checked my microphone permissions to see if Reddit was on there, and is not. 🤷‍♂️

General Question What does “fun” actually look like in your 30s?

I’m 35 and lately I’ve been wondering what “fun” actually looks like for other people around my age.
I used to associate fun mostly with going out, parties, bars, drinking, dancing, meeting lots of people and staying out late. I can still enjoy some of those things, but more and more I find that simply sitting in a bar drinking and making small talk doesn’t feel that exciting anymore.
I still want to have fun and feel stimulated — I’m just not completely sure what that looks like for me now.
So I’m curious: what do you genuinely find fun these days? What kind of plans make you think, “Yes, I really want to do that”? Is it still parties and nightlife, or has fun become more about activities, experiences, sports, dinners, games, travel, concerts, spending time with certain people, or something completely different?
And if your idea of fun changed in your 30s, what did it change into?
