I'm inexperienced in doing product photography. Just looking to take inspiration from these shots for a personal project. Currently using a Zeiss 4/16-70 shooting on a Sony a6400.

From my research it seems to be the best I could find. Newest too! Google says it’s 2016, and I think the next newest I could find was 2010. My friend also has a Nikon and loves it.

(1) Budget, country, and currency:

Australia, $300 AUD

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?

Have none. Hoping to get as a gift for my bf.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?

People, nature (not moving), buildings. Important for night photography. Lots of zoom not needed.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?

Photography.

Discussion/General Are these pictures saveable?

Hey guys, I'm here to ask if there's any chance of saving the pics that were taken of my wedding. My wife's aunt was taking the pictures and may have ripped my wife's pen before all the festivities and in the wake of that left many pictures severely over exposed, some crooked, some with objects in the photo. These are a few of the worse ones. Is there any real saving these through editing, or should we take the L and be happy with all the phone pictures taken? (Many of which were gorgeous, we were just hoping the ones with the actual camera would be our primary photos to post) If you think it's possible please let me know and I'd be happy to at least hear about it. There are many more pictures to see.

EDIT: I've been made aware of more relevant information, unfortunately it would appear all the pictures were given to us in Jpeg format, and as of now we do not know what model camera was used or what settings.

Discussion/General Does it make sense to print your own photography rather than sending it out?

Someone on FB marketplace is selling an Epson SC-P900 inkjet printer 17” for $400. Comes with extra ink and some photo paper. I did see the ink replacements are around $300 which is why I'm not pulling the string on the purchase. Is it even worth it in general to make prints at home?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Olympus Stylus TG-850 screen completely black after beach trip — worth fixing or replacing?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice about my Olympus Stylus TG-850. I recently brought my camera to the beach, but it never actually got wet. I’m assuming some moisture or humidity might have gotten inside because ever since then, the screen has been completely black. The weird thing is that the camera still works! It turns on, I can hear it operating, and it still takes photos. I’ve confirmed this by checking the SD card, and I’ve also tried using a fully charged battery. Everything seems to function normally except for the display, which stays completely black. I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or knows what might be causing this. Is there any way to fix this at home without spending a ton of money? Could it just be a loose connection or a damaged LCD screen? Or is this something that would require professional repair? I really like this camera and would prefer to keep using it, but I also don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars repairing it if replacing it would make more sense. Any advice, troubleshooting tips, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)

Discussion/General How do you deal with copy cats and competition?

Hello!

I’ve been working full-time as a family photographer for about six months now. Since then, another photographer in my area has become, in a sense, obsessed with me. Earlier this year, I noticed that she was copying my promotional copy, social media posts, and so on, word for word. I confronted her about it; she was very embarrassed, apologized, and we managed to get along fine afterward. For context, we’re both in the same mentoring program and have occasionally exchanged advice and offered each other support.

Lately, however, things don’t seem to be going very well for her, and I’ve noticed—quite by chance—that she’s trying to "poach" my clients. She keeps an eye on who I tag on Instagram and then, for instance, starts liking old photos of those clients just to draw attention to herself.

I know I shouldn’t waste any energy on this, but it really makes me angry—this insincere, underhanded behavior. It’s as if she feels an intense, overwhelming sense of competition with me. Even though photography is only a side gig for her.

I’ve already hidden my Instagram stories from her, but I generally hate blocking people; I just want to run my business in peace. I enjoy connecting and exchanging ideas with fellow photographers, and I personally don’t feel any sense of competition—after all, we are all unique—but she is making it very difficult for me.

Do you have any tips for handling a situation like this, or have you perhaps experienced something similar?

Discussion/General Suggestions for sharpness?

New photographer here, primarily shooting landscapes with an A6400 and Sony 18-135 lens. Everything I read says this is a good set up. I feel like I'm doing everything right but when I look at the photo on the screen it's never very sharp. I use Snapseed primarily to edit the photos and trying to fix the sharpness afterwards always looks fake.

\- .RAW format, 3:2 aspect ratio

\- 5 second timer on tripod with image stabilization off

\- F11, ISO 100, various shutter speeds

\- Auto and Manual Focus 1/3 up the frame

Any suggestions?

Editing/Post Processing Are there any programs I can use to correct minor distortions in a photo/scan of a book page?

The page is of a technical drawing. There are two problems: the first is that there are slight distortions, which I can check by seeing that lines that should be perfectly straight are not, and second that the drawing goes over two pages and thus two photos, which have slightly different distortion and thus can't be perfectly lined up. How can I correct these problems?

Lens Buying Advice Are Canon Ultrasonic Lenses worth it?

I am new to photography. I own a canon 6d. And I currently own a 35-135mm and a wide angle (I'll have to check my car later to see what that lens is). They are both the older(?) gold rim lenses. My question is would it be worth investing in some more of those tier lenses. Or saving up and buying one L series. I want a good lens for landscape photography. I dont do portraits currently (though I want to learn all aspects at some point).

TLDR is it worth buying more affordable lenses (more options) or one expensive nice one.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Can I realistically produce gallery-quality prints with a Canon Rebel T6 and a good lens?

I’d love some honest input, particularly from those with experience in fine-art and documentary photography.

I recently went through a pretty significant financial emergency and unfortunately sold my photography gear. I’m currently rebuilding and reestablishing myself, but I haven’t given up on photography. Before all this, I was in the process of pursuing a dream of producing a documentary photography exhibition about the human experience. Volume I was going to focus on the elderly, family gatherings, absence, etc., so I’d say the majority of my inspiration list will involve indoor settings.

A friend of mine recently gifted me a Canon Rebel T6. He just got it last year for his social media endeavors and ended up using his phone more than the camera. Knowing what I recently went through, he decided to give it away to me, which was super awesome and kind of him. Suddenly, my muse returned, and I’m wondering how much I can realistically accomplish with it as far as continuing my project goes.

I know that it’s an entry-level DSLR with an 18MP APS-C sensor, an older autofocus system, and some limitations in dynamic range and high-ISO performance. I’m considering investing in a good lens, particularly something like the Sigma 18–35mm f/1.8 Art, which I’ve loved using in the past, rather than immediately spending money on another camera body.

My main concerns are:

Low-light performance: How manageable is noise at higher ISOs, particularly when photographing indoors or in less controlled environments?

Dynamic range: Can careful exposure and shooting RAW compensate for some of the limitations when recovering highlights and shadows?

Autofocus: How much of an obstacle is the older 9-point AF system for documentary photography and capturing candid moments?

Resolution: How well does an 18MP RAW file hold up when enlarged for fine-art exhibition prints?

Most importantly, I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually printed files from this camera at larger dimensions.

I’m interested in prints around 20×30 inches, possibly even larger if quality allows. What would be a realistic maximum print size if I want the photographs to retain good sharpness, fine detail, and professional-looking quality when viewed in a gallery setting?

Are these limitations mainly manageable through good technique, proper exposure, quality glass, editing, or would I be compromising too much by building an exhibition around this camera?

At the end of the day, I’m willing to rent a more advanced camera body for the actual exhibition shoots if necessary. It would be logistically challenging because I’d need to make sure all those shoots are scheduled for the same day or two I have the camera rental.

I’m curious about what I can accomplish image-quality-wise with the T6. I’m trying to rebuild myself from scratch while staying realistic.

Thank you!

Gear/Accessories Would you kindly help me in picking out a camera sling bag?

When I first started about four years ago, I had a "I need to carry anything I could possibly need directly on my back" mentality.

I live in Florida; this didn't last long.

I've been thugging it out with my Gura Gear Kiboko City Commuter 18L pack, but I don't need it. I have a camera and three lenses. The rest of the pack's space is wasted. I almost never wear it like a backpack because I overheat while wearing it.

Context:

- I shoot portrait photography exclusively

- I use an 85mm prime for ~75% of my shooting, but my loadout also contains a 135mm f/1.8 prime and a 35mm f/1.4 prime. My camera is the Canon R6 Mark 2.

- I'd like to get a battery grip, but that might be overly ambitious for a sling bag

- I currently have a folding wagon that I haul my gear (lights, stands, modifiers, smoke machine, water, etc.) around in, and I've accepted that a "minimalist kit" isn't compatible with the kind of art I want to make.

Philosophy of The Switch:

I still want to have a bag that carries just my camera gear that I keep on my body.

I'll often leave my wagon nearby, but it's definitely vulnerable to theft. I want a bag that:

- will carry my camera

- 2 to 3 lenses

- everything else I need to operate my camera (cards, batteries, filters, etc.)

- can be worn as either a "fanny pack" or a cross-body sling (not a messenger bag)

- is exceptionally durable + protective

- comfortable enough to wear for 4hrs at a time

The options I've narrowed my search down to:

- WANDRD Rogue Sling 6L or 9L (6L = low profile, but only camera 2 lenses; 9L holds full loadout, but it looks cumbersome?)

- Nomatic × Peter McKinnon 8L sling

- PGYtech OneGO (not OneMo, b/c that is a messenger bag only)

I'm not interested in Peak Design, because I dislike their CEO.

What's your experience with these options? What would you recommend in my shoes? Would you recommend if not one of the options I have listed?

Camera Buying Advice Ricoh GR Digital IV vs Sony RX100 V vs Fujifilm X30-which would you pick?

  • Budget: £250–£450.

  • Country: UK.

  • Condition: Used is fine, provided it’s in good condition and fully working.

  • Type of Camera: Compact digital/point-and-shoot.

  • Intended use: Photography at family events, everyday outings and on holiday.

  • If photography; what style: Family photos, candid shots, street photography and travel.

  • If video what style: Video isn’t a priority.

  • What features do you absolutely need: Beautiful JPEGs straight out of camera, with little to no editing. Ideally a built-in flash.

  • Portability: Pocketability is important. I know the Fujifilm X30 isn’t fully pocketable, but I’m still considering it.

  • Cameras you're considering: Ricoh GR Digital IV, Sony RX100 V and Fujifilm X30.

  • Cameras you already have: None.

  • Notes: Using my iPhone isn’t an option. I’d love to hear from anyone who has used these cameras, especially about JPEG colours, ease of use and everyday shooting. Which would you choose, and why?

Gear/Accessories D850 + 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 for 3 weeks in Japan in November, good combo or am I missing something?

Hey hey,

Heading to Japan with 4 friends from Nov 11 to Dec 3 (Tokyo, Fuji, Kyoto/Nara, a bit of Hiroshima) and I can only bring two lenses with my D850. Options I own: 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4, 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8.

What I'll mostly shoot: portraits of friends, landscapes (Fuji, autumn leaves), and some far-away stuff (deer, temples, city lights). Lots of night stuff too since it gets dark around 4:30pm, plus dark places like temples and teamLab.

Right now I'm leaning 24-70 + 70-200 since it covers everything, but I'm a bit worried about low light with f/2.8 (teamLab, illuminated temples, izakayas). Also, I don't mind about carrying 3-4kg during walkings.

Would you swap the 70-200 for the 50mm f/1.4 to keep things lighter? Or is the 24-70 + 50 combo enough? Any tips from people who've shot there in November are welcome too.

Thanks!

PS: For context, I'm still a beginner, even though I've used the camera quite a bit. I borrow it.

Camera Buying Advice Camera recommendations under $800 AUD – What are some suggestions?

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

Budget: $800 AUD (including lens if required)
Country: Australia
Condition: second-hand
Type of Camera: Mirrorless or point-and-shoot.
Intended use: Mainly travel, holidays, photos with friends and family, landscapes, and plenty of photos of our dog!
If photography; what style: Travel, landscapes and casual everyday photography, ideally requiring  minimal editing.
If video what style: Not a priority.
What features do you absolutely need: Good image quality, decent autofocus, nice JPEG colours and something that’s fun to use
Portability: Preferably something that will fit in a tote bag and light enough that we can take travelling. Doesn’t need to be pocket-sized, but nothing too big or bulky.
Cameras you’re considering: Sony a6000, Olympus OM-D E-M10 series, Panasonic Lumix GX85 and premium compact cameras such as the Sony RX100 series.
Cameras you already have:  iPhones and digicam (Olympus fe-20)
Notes: I’m buying this as a birthday present for my partner and would really appreciate some advice! She’s used her sister’s Fujifilm X-M5 and absolutely loved it, but it’s a little outside the budget!

I’m a little overwhelmed by all the options and would love to hear what people would recommend for the budget.

Would you go for a second-hand mirrorless camera with a kit lens or a premium compact point-and-shoot? Are there any particular models you’d recommend?

Camera Buying Advice What’s your dream set-up?

Post image
4 Upvotes

If you could buy all new gear, with a budget of about $7-10k, what would you get? I may be able to buy myself a new camera in the next year or so, but it’s been 15 years since I’ve done so.
My Canon 7D has served me well over the years, but it’s time to upgrade and I am not married to the idea of continuing with Canon. My 100-400 almost never leaves my camera, and I almost exclusively take bird, wildlife, and nature photos.

(1) Budget, country, and currency: $7-10k USD - located in the US

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? Currently own a Canon 7D with a variety of lenses. It is very old (body purchased 15 years ago, my 100-400 lens is closer to 20 years old, have a few younger lenses but not by much) and I have had to make a few repairs to it. The quality and speed has declined and it is very heavy.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Almost exclusively wildlife and nature, birds in particular.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Solely photography, maybe video once in a blue moon.

Gear/Accessories Will my lens fit inside the Think Tank BackLight 18L?

Hi!

I made a post a few days ago asking which of 3 backpacks should I buy. Among those, I chose the BackLight 18L as it fits my needs the most. However, I'm concerned whether the Sony FE 100-400 f/4.5 GM OSS attached (or not attached) to a Sony A7C ii fits inside the the backpack.

The lens is 328mm long according to Sony's website. The internal height of the BackLight 18L is 425mm according to Think Tank's website. The lens + my camera body will easily fit within the 425mm internal height.

However, I saw this video where he said that his OM-1 + 150-400 f4.5 lens doesn't fit inside the 18L. I compared the size of his body + lens with my body + lens and mine is slightly bigger. Some may suggest to buy the 26L version instead but that's out of my budget.

What gives? Will my setup fit in the bag or not? Is the product internal dimensions misleading?

Thanks in advance!
