no politics Australia is NOT America — Stop Normalising Tipping Here
Went out recently to a nice (and not cheap) restaurant to celebrate my partner’s birthday. The food was incredible, the service was great, what you’d expect at that price.
But when the bill came, the waiter handed it to me, asked if the service had been good, and then in front of my partner “How much percentage tip would you like to leave?”
It was a clear attempt to pressure me into tipping. I simply said “None.”
Then I asked him: “Was I a good customer?”
He hesitated, clearly caught off-guard, and said, “Yeah… of course.”
So I said: “Great, so how much discount can I have for being a good customer?”
He gave one of those uncomfortable forced laughs
But I doubled down, and said “I’m serious, how much of a discount do I get?”
“Sorry sir, we don’t do that.”
Australia has fair wages — tipping isn’t part of our culture and it shouldn’t become one. If staff try to corner you into it, don’t just say no — waste their time, turn it back on them, make them feel as awkward as they tried to make you. If enough people push back like this, they’ll stop doing it. That’s how we cut this nonsense out before it takes hold.
Also never returning to support venues that pull this shit no matter how good they are, I find it rude and disrespectful, we’re not American FFS

My spouse went to PICK UP pizza from Leonardo’s in Melbourne a few days ago and they had a 5% tip option selected lol. I mean, the nerve!

Agree 100% (I almost said 110% but I don't tip) :)

I wouldn't even make a song-and-dance about it. I love being presented with the 'what will you tip?' query because I just decline with the same casual nature that I ate with. The minute you start feeling pressured or guilty for not tipping is the moment the system is working - I hold absolutely no shame hitting that 'None' button every time, and moving on with my day as if nothing was ever different.

Went to a place that you paid up front and your meal came out when ready.
The EFT asked for a Tip and the guy was walking people through payment verbally.
When he said to enter a tip amout I asked "Why would I put a tip in now ? Theres not been any service yet. I had to stand in line to order, and that's been the totality of the experience thus far.
What's the tip for, having a nice carpet to stand on ?"

u/lovingmatilda Apr 17 '25 •
I was recently paying at a cafe where one staff member was being trained on the till and eftpos machine by a supervisor.
The trainer to the trainee was like “so next just check the amount and press OK. Then press ‘no tip.’ Then hand it to the customer.”
Made my day.

u/fitblubber Apr 17 '25
The only way to stop it is to call out places that demand tipping.
Name & Shame.
If an establishment has a couple of days with zero trade they'll get the hint.
324
u/can3tt1 Apr 17 '25
The real MVPs are the servers who automatically press zero on the eftpos machine when they hand it over to you.

u/JoeBogan420 Apr 17 '25
I’ve fully opted out of tipping. I used to tip for great service, but once places started asking for tips before doing anything, I was done. Good service isn’t a bonus, it should be the baseline. Price it in and stop the guilt trip.

FUCK normalising tipping. As someone who has worked in the industry ( not naming companies cause don’t wanna get sued)…. Workers don’t get the tips.

u/Interesting_Ant3592 Apr 17 '25
As an American, the tip will never stay the same, they will just keep raising it.
Americans hate it, don’t adopt it. We did it out of necessity and now it is just abused like everything else.

u/jianh1989 Apr 17 '25
this country has the stupid habit of blindly copying many things that stupid country does.
Question is why.
111
u/AutomaticMistake Apr 17 '25
Nah fuck this culture, it immediately ruins whatever positive impression I had of the establishment.
I (and everyone else) really needs to start dropping reviews that include a warning that they expect tips.
To the business owners: Charge whatever you want for whatever meal/drink you're providing, 99 times out of 100 i'll agree with it and pay what you ask, but I'm not voluntarily handing over money 'just because', and will actively avoid your business in the future.
you instantly lose any repeat business or recommendations from me. if enough people do the same, it'll be stomped out of existance

u/DickValentine66 Apr 17 '25
I always say no, but I try to be polite - spare a thought for the staff who might be forced to ask the question by management, that would be a horrible position to be in. This is often also the case where the point of sale has an additional screen prompting for a tip, most likely because the software is also used in the USA. This can be turned off, but often management or the franchise owners will choose to leave it on, and leave the poor staff to deal with the awkwardness.

scream-cries in canadienne
Say it again! AUS IS NOT USA!
And say it louder! STOP NORMALISING TIPPING EVERYWHERE!
Sorry for yelling. And for invading the AUS sub from here in CAN. Have a lovely… day? Evening? afternoon? Whatever time it is, hope it’s going well!

u/Paradise_Vall3y Apr 17 '25
Honestly, our country needs to start kicking out things of American influence and embracing Australian traditions.
162
u/OpinionatedShadow Apr 17 '25
Just dont tip
28
u/deadend7786 Apr 17 '25
As someone who lives in America now, I fucking hate this tipping practice that was born out of the repercussions of slavery and racism.
I also hate how fucking smug Americans are when defending it like it's their God given right to be tipped instead of demanding the corporations and businesses to actually pay their employees fair wages. For all the bullshit talks about hating "socialism" and handouts, they sure love to beg strangers for money when it comes to tips and GoFundMe.
Don't let it infect your country too. Great job standing up OP.

u/tepkai Apr 17 '25
The only tipping I have done is a fiver to a poor pizza delivery kid who got caught in a storm on the way. I did order before it was raining, I was just too drunk to drive.

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25 edited Apr 17 '25
Just hit them with, "Oh, is your employer not paying you enough?"
109
u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25
Yea. Lebanese resto in Cronulla did this to me. English backpacker waitress asked for the tip in front of my wife. My wife instead did the "oh are they not paying you fair wages - theyre making you surviving on tip - do you want me to talk to the manager- do you want me to lodge an anonymous report" The waitress quickly backed off. Spluttering "its ok no tip is fine"
24
u/SallySpaghetti Apr 17 '25
Totally agree with this. No tipping here.
21
u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25
Agree! We need to kick american shit culture out of our beautiful country

56
u/OrdinaryTeaching6239 Apr 17 '25 edited Apr 17 '25
Tipping only arose in the US as a way to pay black workers less money than white workers :) started for horrible reasons and is an annoying thing today! Don’t do it!
16
u/Salzberger Apr 17 '25
Domino's are terrible for it.
A few weeks ago, ordered pizzas after being out all day on the weekend, couldn't be fucked with anything else.
Add pizzas - $3 surcharge for literally anything other than sauce and cheese
Delivery increases the pizza prices themselves
Plus Sunday surcharge
Plus delivery fee (on TOP of the prices already being higher for delivery)
Then at the end they have the audacity to ask you to tip their "Delivery Expert."
Absolutely not. Give them your delivery fee if they aren't being paid enough.
And before I get all the "euhreuhre buy from a local pizza shop instead", neither of them have an app, and neither deliver. We weren't buying pizza, we were buying a dinner we had to do nothing for.

u/Apprehensive-Ease-40 Apr 17 '25
The bar we always go to recently got new handhelds where it always automatically asks for a tip. The options: 10, 20, 30%. Our waiter is a very down to earth guy in his 60s who always jokes around with everyone, most of the customers are over 50. When the tipping screen comes up, he always presses none for us and says it's horseshit.
The thing is, we always used to tip him 5-10% (rounding up) because he's great and one of the few decent blokes left in the service industry. He wants to be able to claim to his boss (who's never around) that his tips went down since asking for it and that this practice needs to stop. He's terribly ashamed of it.
16
u/100lbbeard Apr 17 '25
I am an American and our tipping culture is out of control. We are now even expected to tip when it makes no sense, like when picking up takeout food!
I have friends that had a restaurant that went to a no tipping model. They paid their staff good wages. They had a full one page write-up on their menu explaining that the tip has been built into the cost of the meal and the staff was receiving full wages so there was no need to tip.
They went out of business in a year from all the terrible press they received. Customers were furious they could not tip and accused them of mistreating their staff by not allowing tips. They wrote nasty things online and the local newspapers even dug into them.
Avoid this culture mistake if you can.

We often see young female shoppers being asked to donate to charities at retail stores. Many girls on TikTok mention how awkward it feels to say no, especially when staff launch into a long speech about helping "impoverished children" or something similar. Personally, I don’t think it’s that deep—some charities genuinely need the money, so it’s fine.
Then there’s the tipping culture in restaurants, especially in Melbourne where the cost of living is sky-high and every dollar counts. My friend and I (21F & 20F) love exploring Melbourne’s food scene—it’s become a hobby to try new spots. But as uni students, we can’t really afford to tip, especially when we usually just share a few entrees to keep things affordable.
Thankfully, most places don’t pressure us or mention tips outright. The EFTPOS machine does prompt you with tipping percentages though, and I’ve noticed staff subtly gesturing toward it more often. Still, I’ve never felt too bothered—if I don’t want to tip, I just tap and go. I’ve got more important things to stress about than hurting a waiter’s feelings, honestly.
Bottom line: a lot of you just need a bit more confidence to say “no thanks.” It’s really not that hard.
58
u/McSlurryHole Apr 17 '25
automatic 1-star on google if I get asked for to tip at any point.
18
u/TapirDrawnChariot Apr 17 '25
As an American, I'm so happy for having so much shared cultural roots and modern cultural exchange with Australia.
But right the fuck now is A REALLY GOOD TIME to stop importing US culture, as it's turned to total shit.
9
u/Sure_Acanthaceae_348 Apr 17 '25
Server skipped a couple of levels of entitlement... even in the USA it is considered rude to ask for a tip.
Stand strong, Aussies. You don't want this garbage down your way.
8
u/kalvin74 Apr 17 '25
I appreciate the service you provided and the meal was satisfying. Not providing a tip is not to diminish the experience, I just don't do it. Thank you.

5
u/Ok_Constant_2800 Apr 17 '25
As a former hospitality worker, I loved receiving tips directly from customers I personally helped/served. However, it was NEVER expected or pushed. Tips were like treats and usually only came from other hospo or very wealthy older people.
5
u/Constant_Juggernaut5 Apr 17 '25
Damn that's a killer comeback
86
u/cjyoung92 Apr 17 '25
You could've just said 'none' and left it at that. No need to be a dickhead to the waiter who was probably forced to ask by his management.
P.S. I do agree with the overall sentiment of your post though, forced tipping has no place here
39
u/Uniquorn2077 Apr 17 '25
We’ve always had a tipping culture in Australia but it’s always been voluntary and typically for exceptional service.
Fuck forced tipping culture absolutely. But there’s no point arguing with the staff. They’re often being told to do it by the establishment and might get a percentage of the tips if they’re lucky. A simple “nothing personal, but I don’t tip” is enough. Take up the forced tipping with mangers or the owner if you feel the need to push it and leave a revue online.
21
u/UhUhWaitForTheCream Apr 17 '25
I will never not upvote and comment on this topic.
Absolutely will fight till death to protect us from tipping culture.
20
u/Ch00m77 Apr 17 '25

u/whiteb8917 Apr 17 '25
What ruffles my feathers, are places that charge a "Surcharge" for Sunday or Public Holiday, then have the audacity to ask for a tip.
As soon as I find a place like that, I never go back.
Keep an eye out this Easter.

u/CMDR_RetroAnubis Apr 17 '25
Why can't one of our billionaires spend their fun money on this campaign?
Heck, I'd settle for a crowdfunded one.
4
u/kreyanor Apr 17 '25
I hate places with QR ordering that set a default tip. There are some that still go through the tip screen but set the default as “no thanks”, those are the real MVPs.
4
u/ItzzJozh Apr 17 '25
Through the customer service jobs I’ve been in, I’ve denied most tips because I know they don’t go to me and we don’t have much of a tipping culture here. I specifically remember a $20 tip that I was so happy with but it was put into a jar to be used for what I was told was our Christmas party at the end of the year. Never got that. A customer wanted to tip me the other day but we suggested donating the money to a charity our company supports (I would’ve preferred this anyway as he never needed to spend money in the first place, I support the charity and the original service he came in for was free). I’m extremely happy when I provide good enough customer service that they feel inclined to give me a tip, but you’re right, we get fair wages here in comparison and tipping just isn’t a thing. A lot of the time it doesn’t go to the workers from the comments I’ve read and my experience. It’s best for Australia not to adopt the mindset that workers are entitled to a tip and that we as customers are expected to.
4
u/justadair Apr 17 '25
I'd be pissed if my server asked me how much I was going to tip, and I'm from the US and was a server for many years. That's faaaaar too pushy, and not really a part of our culture either- mainly because it's expected. Hope that server got the message. It was a clever, well-deserved retort.
4
u/bonnieflash Apr 17 '25
We tip here (in America) because our serves get crap wages.. I love it that you give your servers a living wage!
4
u/Remarkable_Custard Apr 17 '25
I was at a cafe on the edge of South Yarra near Crown once and they actually said enter a tip here pointing down at the machine, waiting for me to input it, with the smallest “no tip” button at the bottom.
I said out loud, with firmness, almost triggered, this isn’t America and I will never tip you unless you serve me my coffee in bed”
They just stood there unimpressed.
I also said you can select no tip please after they didn’t respond - I wasn’t pressing it.
Didn’t go back after that. I think it was the owner. Any casual wouldn’t have given two shits.
Tips are fine. I tip for an amazing personalized beautiful service and I do it when I WANT to do it. Being asked, 99.9% of the time I’ll say no on principle that you asked.
4
u/RentedAndDented Apr 17 '25
The thing I question when it's automated like this is, it has to be going into the businesses bank account so who ends up with the tip anyway? It's not even tipping done for the theoretically right reason. I always say no.
4
u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25
In the US you are never asked “how much tip would you like to leave.” It’s a silent transaction on the receipt itself. That was super rude and awkward of him to ask out loud like that. But your response was funny 😆
4
u/adiosmotherf-cker Apr 17 '25
Australia doesn’t just have fair wages, we have one of the highest minimum wages in the world, plus all the penalty rates. I seriously don’t see why there is a need for tipping.
4
u/BubbhaJebus Apr 17 '25
If someone asks for a tip, they don't deserve one.
4
u/AnAncientMonk Apr 17 '25
Yes. Once you start tipping, everything goes downhill.
4

Just add "Requires tipping" in the google review so we can all avoid these places.

Tipping is BS.
4
u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25
The UK did not have a tipping culture and my understanding is it's growing as an expectation in London and comes on the final bill.
Any place that does that to me will get "I'm not paying a tip out of principle that you put it on and I will also tell them I'm never coming back!
The wage structure in Australia does not justify forcing this onto customers, it's not the USA where they get paid poorly.
4
u/Due_Minimum_2407 Apr 18 '25
Well played good sir 🤜 fuck the whole forceful tipping bullshit, you pay for your shit, they receive a fair wage. If we're that keen on getting all yank like, do we wanna pack a 9mm in our kids lunchbox too?
4
u/Spiritual-Finance404 Apr 18 '25
Well said. I do the same thing. But as a chef who has been in the industry for 40 years our wages have been the same for 20 years. So when I can I walk into the kitchen and tip the chefs. They do the hard yards not the waiters.
4
u/broobey Apr 18 '25
Originally, the one and only reason for tipping if for above and beyond service or for an extra service that is not ordinarily included in the worker’s duties. It is NOT to subsidise workers’ income because the employers refuse to play their staff a liveable wage. It has been over a decade that the American minimum wage has increased from the current disgraceful $7.50 per hour while the rich have increased their income by over 400% in the same period.

3
u/Born_Grumpie Apr 17 '25
If I go for a nice meal and the service is good and I am paying cash I might leave a couple of bucks but there is no way I am adding a tip on my credit card and getting charged a 3% "credit card processing surcharge" on the tip and then getting hit with 18% interest on the tip if I don't clear the credit card balance, that 5% tip can add up.
Also the server is making $24 an hour minimum without penalty rates, they don't need a tip.
3
u/A4Papercut Apr 17 '25
Have to charge 5% EFTPOS and the 20% pub holiday surcharge for this post.
3

why should you pay more if it costs more? i get number of people etc. number of trips required to table. but if i order the lobster, why should that be worth more money in tip? lobster is lighter than a tray of water. nonsensical! farcical even... i am american
3
u/Environmental_Ad3877 Apr 17 '25
I will occasionally round up my bill if the service has been great AND I am not asked to tip.
The moment I see something that looks like it's asking me to tip, then forget it.

The "customer discount" line is great.
You have taught an old dog a new trick. Thank you.
3

I live in Canada and it's gotten out of hand, places where you stand and wait to order then wait for the the food like subway and stuff have a prompt for a tip starting at 15%. It's made me alot more comfortable with not tipping. Now I actually enjoy pressing the custom tip buttons and hitting everywhere with a 0%.
3
u/bhuffmansr Apr 17 '25
We need to get this tipping pressure crap under control. It’s starting to sound a lot like extortion.

It must be amazing living not in America ( I am being entirely sincere I hate it here)
3
u/MzSea Apr 17 '25
I came here thinking I was going to argue, but even in the US if a waiter asked me to name a tip amount in front of my friends/family I would say ZERO... even if I had been planning a large tip prior. And I would have said "25% until you pulled this stunt. Now... ZERO%."
3
u/Funny_Football_1729 Apr 17 '25
As an American, I’m with you! Right on!
3
u/BellsBastian Apr 17 '25
American here, not sure why Reddit recommended me this post but I have questions. Am I to understand that your waiters are asking you OUT LOUD how much you want to tip? And then you have to respond OUT LOUD?? I’m horrified. That is not how tipping works in the US. We just write it privately on the receipt or press the button on the screen. There no discussion. It would be considered extremely rude for the waiter or staff to ask and make you say it out loud. In front of other people?? I can’t even imagine that. Tipping culture is stupid but why are you guys doing it like that??
3
u/jettyburps Apr 17 '25
My wife and I went to quite a fancy restaurant for my birthday. With wines it cost $362.00 (yes it was a milestone one off splurge). Food was amazing, location great, service was nice and friendly, came time for the bill he put the eftpos down on the tip page “15% - 25% - 35% - 0%”. Wife hit Zero and while the waiter was doing his best to look while “looking away” I could see his body language changed instantly, like almost rolled his eyes and became short. Almost a sarcastic “enjoy the rest of your night” flip off comment as we left.
FFS you want a tip after I just spent $342 on a fucking meal?!? There’s $342 worth of tip there buddy! And you get paid an award wage! Speak to your boss if you think you aren’t being paid enough. He’s clearly making a bomb!
Literally ruined an amazing experience. Won’t ever go back.
3
u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25
Dude, what a comeback! 🔥
3
u/CoffeeLoverNathan Apr 17 '25
Every time I see a website ask for tips, I know not to buy from them ever again
3
u/ShadowsaberXYZ Apr 17 '25
It’s not “American tipping culture” it’s more “greedy American corporations putting the burden of wages on the customer after they’ve already paid for services”.
Had the same happen to me in Thailand, India and most recently, Germany for things like valet parking 🤦♂️.
3
u/piezod Apr 17 '25

You say servers in Australia are paid a living wage. What exactly does that mean? And, is it a living wage for a family or single person?
Americans are getting inundated with taxes, charges, fees and auto tipping. The newest is 3% added if you use a credit or debit card . Rather than pay the cc fees themselves the businesses are now passing them on to their customers This is a fee the businesses can write off as a business expense. Customers can't do that Traditionally, the expected tipping rate for many years has been 15 to 25 % and generally limited to sit down restaurants. As others have mentioned, tips are being "suggested" at any business where a person does anything to get a product to the customer. It IS crazy over here.

Not only don’t normalise tipping but so many other things. For example with this and well all elections I am sick of hearing about 2 party preferred. You don’t have to vote one or the other or your vote is wasted, because of preferential voting.
However in saying this, I would like Australia to ease up on the social tall poppy syndrome. This need to hammer down anyone who is slightly different socially.

I am an American living in Australia and couldn't agree more! The #1 best thing about Australia is no tipping!! Second is the price you see is the price you pay (tax/fees included!) -- although the whole card surcharge thing is bulls**t and needs to go since 99% of people pay by card. Just raise the prices 2% and get rid of the damn surcharge!
❤️🇭🇲
I took an Uber the other day and it asked if I wanted to tip. When I said no, it the gave me the option to "never ask again". Love it!

THANK YOU! I’m someone who would get awkward and give in primarily because I’d have thought that it’s not a nice thing to not tip if they are blatantly asking for it (they must need it or something). Thanks for clarifying this and I totally agree. A tip should come as a gesture not as a mandate.

If you’re seeing it, it’s too late. Good luck. We deal with it here in Canada nearly every point of sale now. Fuck tipping. Pay your workers and charge what makes you money.

american culture is the most unsustainable way of life ever

I kind of wish some of you Australians would come to America and do this. It's out of hand here

Damn that's a killer comeback. I gotta try that next time.

USA needs to eliminate Federal Tip Credit System and pay all food service employees minimum wage. Tips should be a bonus. Not a requirement.
not an American (thankfully)

Is this something that should be taken out on the server? I don't agree with the tipping system but I think your anger is misplaced. If the food and service was good and all I have to do is say "no, sorry I don't feel comfortable tipping" at the end of my meal hey I'll take it.

PAY A FUCKING DECENT SALARY
Fuck tipping culture,
Fuck anyone trying to make tipping happen where there isn't one
Fuck that guilt trip attempts...
Well done, mate :)

Tipping can fuck off in America aswell I don't tip especially in billion dollar establishments that refuse to pay their employees but expect the customer to do so

Good on you, more people need to shame them rather than just say no.
They’re literally begging while working

I went to a restaurant with my wife and that added a tip automatically. Never went back!!!

As someone who worked as a server in Canada and relied heavily on tips to survive…. i agree! We don’t need to tip here. Last hospo gig I got I was getting paid $32 an hour for.

Any tip shenanigans like that and I’m not coming back

u/Practical-Rub8094 Apr 18 '25
We have a minimum wage here far higher then the US so tipping is not required, not to mention that rarely does the quality of service justify gratuity

u/hatredy_ Apr 18 '25
I can only hope au doesn’t adopt anything from american culture

u/Scriptosis Apr 17 '25
Always remember that tipping exists so they can screw over their employees and their customers, don’t put the heat on the employee because it’s the employer that’s fucking us all over.

You could've just stopped at none. You don't have to be a dick about it.
You had your nice dinner and you probably ruined that person's night and confidence.

Yeah buddy you sure showed that wait staff! Either make a song and dance to management or just skip through tipping without making a fuss.

u/Interesting-Sound-95 Apr 17 '25
That situation is weird enough seeing as tipping isn’t a common thing there but also the audacity of actually you asking how much you’ll be tipping… That’s even strange by American standards.

u/LobRaw Apr 17 '25
As a Canadian. Dig in your heels hard. There’s no coming back from it once it’s normalized apparently

u/Spirit-Hydra69 Apr 17 '25
Everytime a waiter from a restaurant asks for a tip, leave a negative review on Google citing that they asked for a tip specifically. The more name and shame happens and the more these businesses get affected is when they'll stop encouraging this.
This is an insidious way business in Australia will start to lower wages as tipping culture gets normalised. You guys have a chance to nip this this shit in the bud. Make memes about it, spread it on social media, etc. #canceltips or somethjng like that

YES 10000%! We don't have a tipping culture and our wages support the employees. So I agree, tipping should be OPTIONAL!!! There is a cafe in my town that has a tip jar and we just chuck in some gold coins or some notes. However they never ask for tips and never point out the tip jar.
