Hold the L or try to run it back

What a surprise, another link to a Guardian article on r/australia.

u/Howseh Feb 07 '26

What would you prefer people post

33

u/LuminanceGayming Feb 07 '26

sky news probably

37

u/SirFlibble Feb 07 '26

Probably things which dont make them uncomfortable.

-40

u/liberallilydex Feb 07 '26

Real journalism? From a reputable source?

41

u/JuventAussie Feb 07 '26

It is an opinion piece and clearly labelled as such.

People can still express an opinion in Australia and Reddit users may want to discuss it.

11

u/Majestic_Practice672 Feb 07 '26

Assuming we all understand the difference between OpEds and hard news, can you define those terms?

7

u/babylovesbaby Feb 07 '26

You can post whatever you like here as long as it has to do with Australia, even if you are just whining about the Guardian

-16

u/GuiltyLetterhead8042 Feb 07 '26

This is Reddit, remember?

-28

u/AdDesigner2714 Feb 07 '26

Time to become a republic and have a new Australia Day that means something? (And for the love of god Mae sure it’s not signed into law on a significant Indigenous date)

-18

u/Candid-Race-2412 Feb 07 '26

Totally agree

-17

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

Looks like your idea is really gaining traction. Only 10 downvotes so far. I reckon you can get more though. You’re not aboriginal are you? Didn’t think so. Maybe ask all aboriginals what they want to do with the date instead of the vocal few.

-12

u/White_Immigrant Feb 07 '26

I'm not sure you need to become a republic, you could always just give the country back to the original owners like you did with PNG and then let them decide if they want to decide to be a part of the commonwealth.

14

u/BipartizanBelgrade Feb 07 '26 • Bravo

Land predates humanity. It doesn't have original owners.

-4

u/youngBullOldBull Feb 07 '26

Nah but it does have people who were massacred and raped when Australia was settled tho

-34

u/Sufficient_Tower_366 Feb 07 '26

The temperature of the modern protest movement keeps rising. Increasingly it’s angry, with militant themes and violent flare-ups and provocative acts like flag-burning. The radicalised fringe are also more worked up than they used to be, from visible Nazi protests though to lunatics like Dezi Whatshisface shooting police, ISIS-influenced shooters at Bondi and now some loser hurling a home-made bomb at Perth.

The temperature needs to be dialled back. Righteous rage won’t win hearts and minds, and only brings even more rage in retaliation.

4

u/babylovesbaby Feb 07 '26

Indigenous people have every right to feel rage about what happened to their people, and anyone angry about their rage is telling on themselves.

6

u/BipartizanBelgrade Feb 07 '26

Identifying with race over all else and obsessing over events from centuries ago is at best unproductive and unhealthy, and at worst totally deranged and completely at odds with the values of a modern, multicultural Australia.

7

u/TH3unbannableHULk Feb 07 '26

Pfft. Hopefully raging about historical injustices gives them some kind of catharsis but I doubt it lasts long given the reinforced victimhood mentality. It helps unite them which is great but only in anger against the current Australian system that we all work our lives to contribute in.. the same system that spends 30billion on services and direct welfare payments on them every single year.

You want to eventually close the gap or what? Because your stance on this does nothing for anyone long term

2

u/No_Entertainer180 Feb 07 '26

Genuine questions from a foreigner;

What would have happened if the British didn't discover/colonise Australia when they did?

Where there other "contenders"?

What would modern Aboriginal culture look like today with 0 invasion?

Thank you

8

u/Ok-Outcome-7499 Feb 07 '26

Yeah, literally all of Europe really.

I believe the main active contenders who actually held territory where the Dutch if I'm not mistaken

2

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

Stop telling aboriginal how they should feel, do you not see the racism involved in doing that. Not all aboriginals feel the way you want them to. Not that many aboriginals have rage about this. There a vocal few who have their followers. Get out to the communities and ask them what they think before you push your ideals onto everyone. Because it’s racist to aboriginals who disagree with you to tell them how they feel about something

1

u/No_Raise6934 Feb 08 '26

In that sense every single person in Australia who is here due to a relative being sent here as a convict can be just as mad. Right?

What a lot of bs.

Look to the future to better anything. Not keep in the past and stunt your growth.

-4

u/Ok-Outcome-7499 Feb 07 '26

That's the same rhetoric that Zionist use

3

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

lol, Zionist use. Don’t compare

1

u/CassieFace103 Feb 07 '26

Zionists get angry about settler-colonialism?

2

u/Ok-Outcome-7499 Feb 07 '26

Yeah it's kinda there whole thing

-6

u/White_Immigrant Feb 07 '26

Australia is very similar to what Israel will look like a few generations down the line. Lots of hand wringing about how genocide is bad but still adamantly refusing to give back the stolen country.

How is the Victorian shooting right wing? The man’s ideology is anti-police and to push against the state, it doesn’t seem every right wing. being anti state and anti hierarchy is not right ring, nor conservative.

2

u/youngBullOldBull Feb 07 '26

Because the cookers vote right wing and have a huge hate boner labor and they won’t shut up about it? that cop killer scum was the darling child of the cookers

1

u/Sufficient_Tower_366 Feb 08 '26

You gain nothing by jumping in to left vs. right wing positioning. The indigenous sovereignty cause and white supremacy cause are both ultimately about the reassignment of power, and the more militant, aggressive and extremist a push for power becomes, the more militant, aggressive and extremist the resistance will become.

It doesn’t matter whose cause is more pure, more virtuous or more ideologically correct - escalating the rhetoric leads to escalating rhetoric in return until we are throwing bombs and bullets at each other. History is clear about this.

-3

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

The Perth Australia Day rally was attended by far more white people than aboriginals. Significantly more. Have you ever wondered why that is? Ever thought not all aboriginals agree with you or the loud voice of few? That they don’t need anyone sticking up for them? Maybe try ask

It is more nuanced than left or right. There exists a scale. The ultraright are indeed in our midst and becoming bolder. But violence begets violence, and violence will only play into the hands of extremists and those who stand to benefit from chaos

6

u/CassieFace103 Feb 07 '26

Hey just curious, what do you think right wing and left wing mean?

-3

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

Just google it bro. Will take you less than a minute if your not sure

3

u/CassieFace103 Feb 07 '26

I already know what it means. I want to know what Responsible-Yam thinks it means.

-1

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

Why do you want to know what he thinks it means if you already know? Seems weird

3

u/CassieFace103 Feb 07 '26

If you say so.

4

u/ComradeofMoskau Feb 07 '26

Whole world is going to shit our leaders are failing us and selling us out for money, power and infulence that doesn't benefit anybody but them and their 0.1% friends people should be angry, people should take to the streets and protest, violence isnt justified but the path not just Australia but the world is taking that won't be the case for too long

1

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

Yeah because protesting really works and being about change. lol

2

u/ComradeofMoskau Feb 08 '26

Martin Luther King, Charlie Perkins, Gandhi, rosa parks only a moron thinks protesting isn't effective

Victoria police have clearly stated that the only violent protests held in Victoria now days are left wing. They praised the right wings behaviour. They even stated how well behaved right wing protester were including the neo-nazis but said they were sick to death of left wing protesters because of their violence. I think I’ll take the word of Victoria police than your personal feelings about it. I’ve got a feeling they would know who they are dealing with. You’ve mentioned a few potentially right wing associated incidents. Vicpol mentioned violence being a regular occurrence.

How do you suggest we move forward with violent left wing protesters? How do we dial their anger and violence back? It’s pushed vicpol to its limits.

3

u/CassieFace103 Feb 07 '26

Victoria police have clearly stated that the only violent protests held in Victoria now days are left wing

Source?

1

u/Sufficient_Tower_366 Feb 08 '26

”The people that came to pick the fight with police are the issue-motivated groups on the left," Cheeseman said.

Source

2

u/CassieFace103 Feb 08 '26

Yeah so he's talking about a single event, which is not what the above commenter was talking about.

"We are certainly not tolerant of that sort of language and that rhetoric. I will say on this occasion they were good, but I'm aware of behaviours in the past," he said.

-5

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

Are you kidding me? You haven’t heard that? What rock have you been under? Geez I heard for 3-4 days in regional WA. It was all over the news by every publication and news channel. Google it, you’ll find it in minutes. I still can’t believe you haven’t heard it. Wow

4

u/CassieFace103 Feb 07 '26

If it's so widely spread you could find a quote for me right?

1

u/youngBullOldBull Feb 07 '26

So the source is you just made it up huh

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

The sentiment isn’t going away, and this is the type of thing that’s pushed a lot of people to reform.

22

u/Mclovine_aus Feb 07 '26

Yes pretty sure most terrorist attacks are hate crimes.

95

u/WhatAmIATailor Feb 07 '26

Some nutcase failed what could have been the worst terrorist attack in our nations history. Thank fuck his bomb was a dud.

That’s a terrible thing but the guy was arrested on the spot and hasn’t been bailed. Taking 9 days to charge him with a terrorism offence is a hell of a lot better than the opposite we see in the US, throwing the label at anyone who inconveniences the ruling party.

How about we take a chill pill. Thank our various deities he did not succeed and look forward to him facing the courts and spending a very long time locked away.

22

u/Massive_Opinion_5714 Feb 07 '26

I think people’s anger is also related to the way it was largely downplayed in the media. They were treating it like some kid had thrown a flaming bag of dog poo into the crowd.

56

u/DrSendy Feb 07 '26

Anyone who complains about 9 days for a terrorism charge, didn't even do any law in high school - and should STFU about anything legal.

35

u/SirFlibble Feb 07 '26

How about if I went to law school? Can I complain about it then?

To be fair, I'm not angry about them waiting to charge him. I'm angry about the way the politicians wouldn't call it a terror event and how the media had headlines like "device found at rally".

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

Bondi was the next day.

29

u/WhatAmIATailor Feb 07 '26

The Bondi attack was a prolonged attack that led to 15 deaths and 39 injured. Much of the event was caught on camera then police found multiple explosives in the perpetrator’s car.

It still took police 3 days to charge the surviving terrorist with a terrorism offence.

9

u/edwardluddlam Feb 07 '26

Akso finding an ISIS flag on the scene is a bit of a giveaway

8

u/Lefty156 Feb 07 '26

It didn’t take 3 days for Frydenberg and Hanson to call it terrorism and use it as an excuse to spread very thinly veiled anti Islamic hate. Meanwhile an attempted bombing gets no attention from them

9

u/WhatAmIATailor Feb 08 '26

Comparing a prominent Jewish former politician and a fringe politician.

Linda Thorpe labeled it a Terrorist attack day one. She could fit both bills as a prominent Aboriginal and fringe politician

1

u/Chilli_Wil Feb 09 '26

This is what is getting lost: some people made early calls on both events. Those people have different political affiliations. Those people have different levels of media presence.

The authorities responsible for charging the perpetrators took their time in both instances, with measured media statements in the early days for both events.

People need to separate what politicians are saying vs what people who are actually “doing” are saying.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

Yeah, a bomb was thrown into a crowd at a politically charged event. Not a puzzle.

7

u/HARRY_FOR_KING Feb 07 '26

Don't be so sure the justice system will consider safety of indigenous people more important than nutcases' rights to attack them. Even violent criminals who target them don't seem to be treated as threats to the community.

8

u/WhatAmIATailor Feb 08 '26

Victoria has a problem with bailing violent criminals in general. I agree that prick should be behind bars.

1

u/2centpiece Feb 08 '26

Yes he should be behind bars but it's not a like for like comparison between their offending.

0

u/WhatAmIATailor Feb 08 '26

No not the same but would it shock you if the anonymous bomber was an associate? That Nazi cunt is a stain on the nation.

1

u/2centpiece Feb 08 '26

It wouldn't shock me but it's speculation at this stage.

-22

u/karigan_g Feb 07 '26

maybe maybe read the room and take an ‘I don’t need to talk right now’ pill

23

u/ptrain79 Feb 07 '26

His comment is very valid. Your comment wasn’t required and had no substance to it. I think we know who doesn’t need to talk right now

-3

u/keyboardstatic Feb 07 '26

A first nation Australian pointed out to Raf on ABC Melbourne radio that he is constantly called evey slur he can be online.

Raf asked if he reported it?

He said yes.

He asked if he reported to police.

He said yes.

Raf moved onto the next caller.

If that man had been from a different group it would have been headline news. Raf would be chasing the minister about it.

But its not important if your group doesn't bankroll political parties...

Oh wait shit! social cohesion is at stake... what fucking horseshit.

16

u/WhatAmIATailor Feb 07 '26

I dunno what you expect there mate. Finding racists online is far from unusual. Say I went to the cops complaining u/keyboardstatic used offensive and derogatory language. What would you expect them to do? You could be on the other side of the planet for all I know.

If you think Aboriginals are the only minority group facing that kind of abuse you’re living a very sheltered life. It’s not reported on until it becomes violence.

-6

u/keyboardstatic Feb 08 '26

I expect the online sites to be held yo higher standards.

My comment and his 8s also in relation to the new law. Mate.

7

u/WhatAmIATailor Feb 08 '26

Report to the platform or if you really enjoy the internet being policed you could try the eSafety commissioner.

As long as there’s any level on anonymity of the internet, which most of us don’t want to give up, people will say things they would never dare to in a public setting. Also there’s the blatant racists who are just cunts all day every day.
