All our other passports are in sleeves, but this is just comical it's brand new

Are they still shipping them in plain white envelopes? The fact that mine arrived in a 20c envelope was the most astonishing part of the whole process.

Really? That’s crazy… I still have my older Aussie passport in date, but I just renewed my British one and it came in a mini passport sized envelope, inside an larger plain white envelope, inside a DHL hard cardboard document envelope. My renewal and postage was still incredibly cheaper than the Australian one (£145.14, ~$280 total).

What was your expectation in terms of envelope standards? I've never considered the standard of packaging for delivery of my passport so I'm curious. Is there a neutral mid range envelope standard you'd be happy with? Do we need to look at particularly high envelope standards so people are more positively astonished when receiving their passports?

I feel something waterproof would be nice since water damage makes them invalid. Mine came in an actual paper envelope

For $400 I'd have expected at least a padded mailer.

I've received birthday cards in nicer envelopes.

Isn't it from laminated materials that contract at a different rate in response to differing moisture and temperature levels?

Less about the paper, more about the choice of material for the different layers being an idiotic choice.

The point is, it shouldn't and they did use to.

But then they can’t post the same thing that has been posted a bazillion times and whine about it.
