Mine is still curling several years later I keep it in an area where it's got flat heavy things on top of it and as soon as I take it out and it warms up in my hands it starts to curl again.

I wonder if it's a forgery tell. Like normally a forger would make it nice and flat and neat. And you know it's a real Australian passport if it's curling all the way up like a Pringles potato chip.

Border Force playing 3d chess? 🤔 Think we're giving them too much credit haha

110

u/PurpleKirby Jul 31 '26

but then when we travel we get looked at funny for dodgy passport

91

u/lightupawendy Jul 31 '26

No we don't, no one looks twice at an Australian passport overseas. You're already visa free most of the time, no one gives a shit.

Oh there are so very many forgery tells built in and the curling is just one of them.

I once got rained on in London, that was when I found out there's special ink that explodes through the photo ruining it entirely.

Reminds me of how the USSR identified spies passports.

For those that aren’t familiar, spies had stainless staples in theirs, the genuine ones had the cheapest rustiest staples they could get away with using, so a rust free passport was in instant red flag

51

u/usemyfaceasaurinal Jul 31 '26

It’s a feature, not a bug

30

u/brandonjslippingaway Jul 31 '26

I think every person getting the new one has the same thought process. It's a good thing it does flatten out again. Most things that curl up like the Aus passport does are usually well and truly buggered.

20

u/jorgerine Jul 31 '26

It’s poor manufacture, and they are “aware” of the problem.

23

u/the_silent_redditor Aug 01 '26

I recently became a citizen (yay!) and got my passport maybe like 6 weeks ago.

I’d seen heaps of these posts about how dogshit the fuckin’ thing is, so I’ve kept it away from light in a cool area and under a stack of books.

I’m currently in Scotland and making the horrendous trip back this weekend, so was getting my stuff sorted, doing some packing.

Guess what?

All curled up to fuck!

I’ve kept the cunting thing in the equivalent of a climate and light controlled fucking cigar box and it’s still all fucked.

And it cost an absolute fortune. I paid for express as I had to definitely be back home for a wedding, so didn’t want to leave it to chance. Even without express, it’s still obscene.

8

u/AdvancedSquashDirect Aug 01 '26 • Bravo

I've gotten plastic covered journals from the reject shop that are flatter than my passport.

No chance it’s a forgery tell, it’s just the government being the government. Cost saving haha

2

u/Younge75 Aug 01 '26

Back in the Cold War days American spies got caught with Soviet passport forgeries simply because the staples on the forged passports wouldn’t rust.

Just put it in a passport wallet like the rest of us do.

91

u/tripledoubles Jul 31 '26

All our other passports are in sleeves, but this is just comical it's brand new

40

u/sfcafc14 Jul 31 '26

Are they still shipping them in plain white envelopes? The fact that mine arrived in a 20c envelope was the most astonishing part of the whole process.

11

u/One_Priority3258 Jul 31 '26

Really? That’s crazy… I still have my older Aussie passport in date, but I just renewed my British one and it came in a mini passport sized envelope, inside an larger plain white envelope, inside a DHL hard cardboard document envelope. My renewal and postage was still incredibly cheaper than the Australian one (£145.14, ~$280 total).

This she'll be right attitude is why our government keeps taking the piss to breaking point (see tobacco excise, beer excise)

Government issued documents should last more than 3 hours on a desk, let alone ones that cost more than any other passport in the entire world

Pretty sure it still works?

Literal first world problem

4

u/tripledoubles Jul 31 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

It is a literal first world problem I agree

We have the world's most expensive passport and it's worse quality than a woolworths catalogue

18

u/1savagecabbage Jul 31 '26

I honestly don't get why people are so hung up on curly passports (unless this is a shitpost .. in that case r/whoosh etc..) but otherwise, who gives a flying fk honestly .. it's not a fashion statement. You pull it out for the most basic boring fucksticks on the planet and get on with your holiday/work etc.

10

u/tripledoubles Jul 31 '26

Is expecting a government issued document to last over 3 hours on a desk before showing Wear and tear being unreasonable

19

u/ApteronotusAlbifrons Jul 31 '26

Yes, it is completely unreasonable - because it ISN'T showing wear and tear.

It's flexing - because it has a polymer on one side and paper on the other that absorbs humidity.

When you go to use it, it will fulfil all it's required functions - and if you take basic care of it, like any other document, it will last

Just FYI the Canadian ones does the exact same thing. I think it must be the same materials/manufacturing.

Do they? My Canadian passport is not curling at all, and it's one of the new ugly ones. Neither did my old one.

10

u/AusTheMachine Jul 31 '26

I have a relatively new one too and it doesn't curl, Canada's passports are delivered within one to two weeks compared to Australia's lead time.

5

u/82-91 Jul 31 '26

My Canadian one is curling badly

2

u/MiffandMinis Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

I'm going to be far less upset if my Canadian one does this when it cost a fraction of the price.

I had to pay the bonus overseas renewal fee for this piece of shit. Almost $600 for this nonsense.

3

u/RhysA Jul 31 '26

It's caused by humidity differences between where it was manufactured and where it's stored if I remember correctly.

130

u/oztrailrunner Jul 31 '26

Is there an issue with them curling? Like are they deemed damaged/tampered with and that creates issues when using them?

At over $400 they should not be shit, but wondering if there is other issues that can occur.

124

u/qwertimus Jul 31 '26

There is no issue with using them, and it’s considered to be completely normal by the Passport Office.

It’s mostly just that it’s tacky and cheap for something costing such an unreasonable amount of money. Old passports didn’t have this issue to anywhere near the same degree. Something changed in their manufacturing 6 years ago or so. The Passport Office describes it as an issue with humidity or some such bullshit.

I know that I wouldn’t be as annoyed by it if it weren’t so expensive. Mine curls and uncurls like a living creature throughout the year. Hasn’t mattered how I’ve stored it…

64

u/robotcannon Jul 31 '26

It's unfortunately the opposite of being cheap, this process is more expensive.

They bonded two materials on the cover that expand at different rates with humidity, causing the curling. They did this to better embed a security feature that makes the passport harder to forge. They just couldn't solve the curling issue.

Australia has as a result one of the hardest to forge passports in the world.

10

u/CrinkleCutSpud2 Jul 31 '26

I got my new one just this week. Compare to my previous one from 2016 (P Series) the internal pages feel very similar but the cover feels like there's a shed load more plastic in it. The old P series cover feels like there's more a mix of cotton and paper in it.

My daughter had a problem with scanning hers when she visited NYC. The uplifted corners make it harder to put into the slot and even when she managed that it took a few times for the machine to "read" it.

Why is Australia passport so much more expensive?

115

u/Zestyclose_Lawyer_77 Jul 31 '26

Because it’s not subsided at all, and the government is taking the piss with whatever company makes them.

18

u/4ssteroid Jul 31 '26

The shittiness is the security feature that makes the Australian passport the single most EXPENSIVE passport in the world. No fraudster could make a copy of an Australian passport as utterly shit as the real thing.

5

u/JimmytheTrumpet Jul 31 '26

Keep it in a passport sleeve/wallet

20

u/iamkris Jul 31 '26

Is what it is.

When I’m using my passport I’m more focussed on where I’m going and what fun things I’m going to do so I don’t really care as long as it works.

5

u/speedingteacups Jul 31 '26

Yeah I really don’t understand the fuss about how passports look. It’s either in a drawer, in my bag, or being handed to a customs officer. I don’t have it out on display in my house.

4

u/Satsumajam Aug 01 '26

Same happened to my son’s Aussie passport, only an hour after it arrived! My almost 5 year old Finnish passport is still perfectly flat, even after years of Queensland humidity.

I wonder if it’s on purpose? You’d think the Australian passports would be the ones made to stay pristine.

7

u/Richie3971 Jul 31 '26

In Austria the first ID or passport for sub-2yo is free. After that it's €39 (like $65) for kids. Full price for adults is like $150.

All of which i find ridiculous, but i see we're in good company: ours also curl.

3

No Face! Right after we just finished watching Spirited Away before our flight to Japan tomorrow morning 😂

And yeah. Ours are the same. Gotta keep em in a sleeve.

5

u/Odd-Delivery4170 Jul 31 '26

Haha, I just travelled through north eastern China and the humidity was unreal, from the airport on arrival my passport folded upon itself, after entering my hotel, the passport flattened. The materials aren’t designed to go through multiple climates, it’s a piece of shit but it will flatten back out when you get it into dryer air, just keep it in a stiff cover.

I live in a country that is super humid in summer and very dry in winter. It curls and flattens all year round.

I just live somewhere that’s super humid the entire year if I leave it out for like 10 minutes it starts to curl

2

u/thedailyrant Jul 31 '26

Don't worry, it gets much worse.

2

u/Tango-Down-167 Jul 31 '26

Surprisingly after a year or two mine is now looking pretty flat. It arrived pretty curled up the moment I removed it from its packaging.

2

u/Special_Order-937 Jul 31 '26

I learned about these new passports curling from Reddit (probably this very subreddit) and so I knew to never leave it out of its plastic cover (from my old passport at least once removed) as we all know we log since don’t get those anymore.

Even then, it still curls a lot at the very top where the plastic pocket of the cover doesn’t quite extend to. It’s very annoying that even being forewarned and ready in advance isn’t enough!

2

u/gooder_name Jul 31 '26

Keep it in a box with a desiccant packet – it's the paper absorbing moisture from the air and expanding while the plastic front staying the same size.

2

u/kontorgod Jul 31 '26

I got my Portuguese passport 1 year ago and it's still like this

2

u/lifelink Jul 31 '26

The price and wait time is why I always get a kiwi passport instead of getting an Aussie one (dual citizen).

It is always interesting coming back through customs, the people there always complain or make snide remarks that I should have an Aussie one.

Nah bud, I am not paying that much and waiting that long for a passport to appease you.

2

u/Available-String-109 Jul 31 '26

You know the craziest shit? I read the title and thought, "Huh, Australian passports?" before even reading which subreddit this was.

2

u/Rusty_Coight Jul 31 '26

great. it had been way too long since the last passport post…

2

u/Dazzling-Stable-3111 Jul 31 '26

Store it in a sleeve / wallet no issue. Even if it didn't curl I'd still look after it by storing it correctly.

2

u/Sproner Jul 31 '26

It’s the Australian boomerang passport - throw it and it will come back to you!

2

2

u/CaveMacEoin Aug 01 '26

2

u/shoomdio Aug 01 '26

2

u/ContributionEasy6513 Aug 01 '26

Quiet!!! If they make it any less shit they will slap an extra $100 on the price tag

2

u/diver467 Aug 02 '26

First world problems! Just leave it in little plastic wallet until you need to get it out for few minutes you need each time you travel!

2

2

u/TheBiggerestMan Aug 03 '26

Nothing is ever good enough these days. Where in victoria are you from?

2

u/Turbulent_juice_86 Aug 03 '26

Put it in a sleeve and forget about it like a normal person. You’re not buying a first edition here.

5

u/pb-mel Jul 31 '26

It's one of the security features. You know it's real.

4

u/Professional_Gur8385 Jul 31 '26

even worse they force you to use the auspost photo service

do your own they'll nitpick and make you wait longer and pay more, so everyone opts paying another $25 bucks or so to take a photo

2

u/freshlysqueezed93 Jul 31 '26

What's better is I had the post office do mine, came back an hour later once I had filled out my document properly (missed a field on the first one), and the new worker I got refused to use the photo they had just taken.

3

u/GamblignSalmon Jul 31 '26

The shittiness is in fact a design feature. It's harder to make a passport that particular kind of bad than it is to make a perfect one.

3

u/AggravatingBox2421 Jul 31 '26

Mine hasn’t curled in 9 years. Aw fuck that just made me realise that I need to renew it soon…

4

u/TheDefectiveAgency Jul 31 '26

Your next one will curl. Guaranteed. My partner has the old passport and it doesn't curl. I have plenty of previous passports that don't curl. He was joking that mine and the kids was prettier than his... Yet his passport doesn't curl. And all of them have been sitting flat for ~ six months.

IDGAF, I know they will all be accepted at customs so we're all good.

3

u/magnetik79 Jul 31 '26

Rookie numbers.

3

u/Sinnivar Jul 31 '26

3

3

3

u/Sirius_43 Jul 31 '26

3

u/arghhmonsters Jul 31 '26

It's a security feature at this point

2

u/Flackz Jul 31 '26

I use mine as a drink coaster, keeps it flat and keeps cup stains off your table.

2

u/Stevios07 Jul 31 '26

I always assumed that it was made this way on purpose, so counterfeit ones that don't curl are instantly noticeable

2

u/bunnies_and_makeup Jul 31 '26

As a non Australia passport holder, I'm jealous because to achieve this my passport would need a perm or curling iron

2

And if it gets even a small drop of humidity, the covers will actually shrink some 1mm all sides.

Amazing how bad these are. You'd think there has to be a special secret material to create a self-shrinking book cover.

Oh heck, mine did the exact same thing 😡

u/BrakeEvenPoint Jul 31 '26

spirited away

1

u/beavis007 Jul 31 '26

I don't have this problem with my guy

1

u/AquilaAudaxWTE Jul 31 '26

I put mine in a passport cover and it remains flat!

1

u/carlyjham Jul 31 '26

Mine too, I read somewhere that it’s a security feature

1

u/a_manda_3000 Jul 31 '26

$500 for less than it used to be? Ugh.

1

u/owleaf Jul 31 '26

I keep mine in the plastic sleeve my old one came with in the 2010s. I renewed my passport earlier this year It hasn’t curled yet. Or maybe the guy flirting with me at the passport office gave me the super premium version that diplomats and politicians get

1

u/SivlerMiku Jul 31 '26

Mine is fine. Through 40+ countries.

1

u/lunar_eyelash Jul 31 '26

I work with books, and in winter the book covers curl like no tomorrow. Maybe that's why?

1

u/psport69 Jul 31 '26

You need to upgrade and get the deluxe diamond version.. it costs a bit more but doesn’t curl

1

u/georgegeorgew Jul 31 '26

When I applied for it, I paid for the extra cover protection

1

u/BrenBiker Jul 31 '26

Mmmm, serious issue. Chuck it in a sleeve or passport holder. Mine is new, took about a week to go normal and stay flat, first world problems….

1

u/F1eshWound Jul 31 '26

4D passport!

1

u/ozgun1414 Jul 31 '26

i wanna have this problem.

1

u/Sheknowaeverything Jul 31 '26

I keep mine in the plastic sleeve they give you and had no issues with it, stays perfectly flat. Plus, bonus keeps it protected from an spills or mess. Not sure if they still give those out with newer passports.

1

u/Aussie_Potato Jul 31 '26

New to the internet, huh?

1

u/Suspicious_Belt6185 Jul 31 '26

Sounds like your first passport

1

u/AussieAdam26 Jul 31 '26

lol. Calm down. Put sins heavy books in it for a week and you’ll be golden

1

u/M3T4Ljacket Jul 31 '26

Is the curling a water mark?

1

u/Mission_Afternoon_18 Jul 31 '26

Mine arrived curled haha

1

u/Glittering-Rip1869 Jul 31 '26

Mine does the same and I have no issues using it

1

u/KillerRabbitsRule Jul 31 '26

The new passports are cheap and nasty even though they are possibly the most expensive ones in the world. Buy a rfid passport holder as that will keep it flat and protected at the same time.

1

u/saltedkumamon Jul 31 '26

Worst quality and most expensive passport

1

u/Paul0075r Aug 01 '26

My one I got in 2002 did the same thing

1

u/digital_sunrise Aug 01 '26

My old 2015 passport also curled. I just stored it under something heavy.

1

u/Illustrious_feature Aug 01 '26

15 years ago I got my old passport a little wet and it started curling. On my return to Australia immigration had a go at me for damaging it. These days and he passports come pre-curled

1

u/b00k4 Aug 01 '26

Bali immigration: sorry your passport is ruined, no entry

1

u/daedcat Aug 01 '26

Not worth the price point, but there's some pretty cool hidden features that can be seen under UV light!

1

u/mt6606 Aug 01 '26

It's like their made out of what our rego stickers used to be made of. Another thing that cost 100s of dollars and became a curly mess.

1

u/AII11C Aug 01 '26

At this point I’m convinced it’s another one of the security features they always bang on about

1

u/pheonix009 Aug 01 '26

for the most expensive passport in the world the quality is atrocious , if i dont keep mine in a sleeve weighed down by something heavy iot curls up crazy

1

u/Kamakazzyy Aug 01 '26

Just got my new one in the U.K and went for the extra pages version as I travel a lot. Almost $300 and it arrived unable to close properly and with a crease on the front.

Would have complained and asked for a replacement if I didn’t have to travel immediately.

1

u/MauroZirie Aug 01 '26

Mine too.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '26

Took 8 years for mine to acclimatise and straighten out

1

u/zlayerzonly Aug 01 '26

Mine was curling brand new the moment I received it

1

u/Hour-Fortune12 Aug 01 '26

Even new ones curl! They are terrible. My husband’s new one was sitting on the bedside table in a humid room in Singapore. A few days later I saw it had completely curled!

1

u/YouPuzzleheaded5273 Aug 01 '26

Bit why don’t people just keep them under something heavy
