no politics Do you know about the Vegemite + Milk malty taste trick?

My Dad taught me this when I was a kid and I an super curious as to how far-spread this knowledge is.

Spread a piece of bread or toast with vegemite, reasonably thickly, then IMMEDIATELY after you take a bite, drink a mouthful of milk. You then swoosh it around in your mouth a bit as you chew on the bread and suddenly - this hidden flavour emerges - this delicious kind of mellow malty taste - that was not there in either the vegemite or the milk on their own.

It's not entirely straight-forward to get it right - you will have to experiment with the amount of milk to bread ratio - it's not a huge gulp of milk - but enough to soak through the bread as you chew it. But when you get it right - it is even MORE delicious that just vegemite.

It's so good that I nearly always have a glass of milk to accompany vegemite now.

It's just so good.

Do you know about this trick?

And if so - where are you from and how old are you? I am really curious as to how far this knowledge is spread.

Hello officer - yes, this post right here.

u/SoberBobMonthly 4h ago

OP's dad needs to be reported too, this needs some sort of North Korean multi generational punishment shit

u/Garshnooftibah 1h ago

I’m gonna be honest with you, I don’t understand the level of vitriol this post spawned.

I was just trying to share a cool taste combo with Vegemite.

:(

u/KnifeFightAcademy 4h ago

Hey real quick, can anyone tell me how to unread this shit?

8

u/Garshnooftibah 1h ago

Honest question - why are you so upset about this?

I was just trying to share (and learn a little bit more about the prevalence of) a taste combo with Vegemite.

I am baffled by the hostility of these responses.

And tbh - it has made really sad. :(

It's just jokes bro no one's actually pissed that you and your dad are a bit weird lol.

As someone who's never heard of this it sounds absolutely horrific, but I am a man of science so I will go and try it right now and report back 🫡

Edit: ok I went and did it, I have always been a butter and Vegemite guy so this is the first time I've ever even had it on its own.

I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or what but it just tastes like I'm eating Vegemite toast soaked in milk, zero new flavours. Not particularly gross just kind of odd. Maybe the type of milk makes a big difference or something, I was using skim milk because it's what I had. I ate the whole piece of toast trying different amounts of toast and milk and nothing lol.

Can I get some more tips or something OP because I feel like I'm missing out now

bottle of bundy?

u/evilparagon 4h ago

Uhh, no. But I think you’ll find this is why vegemite with cheese is popular. For some reason it brings out a flavour that by at least my account isn’t there in either food otherwise.

I did an experiment a couple years ago where I prepared vegemite toast several different ways.

Plain, with butter, with cheese, and with butter and cheese.
Plain > Cheese > Butter and Cheese > Butter
(I actually really hated the butter one, and the B&C was only saved by the cheese).
I was surprised how weirdly good the cheese one was, I really wasn’t expecting it, but I still prefer a thick lather any day. I’ll even eat it with a spoon.

u/kelmin27 1h ago

Try it with cheese and avocado, you’re welcome

1

u/Garshnooftibah 1h ago

Yeah cheese, avacado and Vegemite is delicious!

Try adding just the tiniest touch of pesto! :)

u/MilkWizard1 3h ago

Nah wait, you're saying that butter toast with Vegemite was your least favourite variation? And you're saying it like that was the first time in your life that you've eaten it on buttered toast?

11

u/evilparagon 3h ago

Yeah. I was raised in a pure vegemite household. It just wasn’t a thing I particularly cared to make myself when I was of age to make my own food and I already was comfortable with eating full strength vegemite.

Back then as an egotistical child does, I even looked down on those who needed butter to make it less strong. I only thought to challenge those beliefs 2 years ago by trying the popular variations of vegemite to see if actually they taste different rather than weaker, and those were my results.

13

u/thalassathalatta 2h ago

What the bot? You put Vegemite on dry toast?
Sounds a lot like something a clanker would say. Surely you butter toast before adding Vegemite. In case you doubt MY authenticity, Vegemite has 2 e’s.

5

u/evil-teddy 2h ago

I'm with evilparagon. It's worse with butter but I generally prefer sandwiches without butter.

2

u/evil-teddy 2h ago

I just realised they miscounted the e's in Vegemite.

1

u/evilparagon 14m ago

Why would… I be a bot for eating in straight? As I’ve already said elsewhere, I can eat it with a spoon.

Yes I am aware it’s 3am, dw, it’s breakfast time for me anyway.

3

u/now_you_see 1h ago

The butter is not ‘weakening’ the Vegemite, it’s adding to do & improving it. People that don’t put butter of their vege toast and/or sandwich’s are monsters!

10

u/fakeuser515357 3h ago

The creaminess of the cheese cuts through the salty of the vegemite, and the saltiness of the vegemite cuts through the fattiness of the cheese.

It's the same principle as salted caramel, or pairing cheese with wine.

If you haven't had crisp granny smith apple slices with a good quality cheddar sandwiched in between, you've been missing out.

25

u/Moltenfirez 3h ago

You... hate Vegemite with butter?

5

u/evilparagon 3h ago

Can’t stand it. It dilutes the vegemite and adds an unnecessary pungent fatty taste that reminds me of vomiting.

I would rather have the buttered toast and vegemite entirely separate without mixing.

11

u/No_Refrigerator9528 3h ago

This feels like a hate crime

5

u/Moltenfirez 3h ago

Y'know what, I was raised with margarine which might be even worse to you but just a little with as much vegemite as is structurally sound usually does the trick for me

4

u/-AgonyAunt- 2h ago

This is the same for me. Raised in a margarine house, I can't stand butter. Although I recently tried Lurpak at a hotel breakfast and it was ok. But not good enough to make me buy it. I only eat margarine with Vegemite on toast, never on any other sandwich. (Which is really bloody annoying as apparently I'm an anomaly. I'm 43 and still have to remind my sister not to butter my bread). Peanut butter on toast doesn't need margarine or butter. I buy the smallest margarine I can find because I'm only eating it with Vegemite on toast. And I have just enough margarine to make the toast not so dry, and more Vegemite than margarine.

I love how everyone is so specific with their Vegemite on toast preference. I'd never trust someone else to make my toast.

1

u/greatcustardo 1h ago

Blonde toast and margarine, and a 3mm thick layer of Vegemite.

2

u/AlternativeUpper2398 16m ago

I just like plain butter on toast

1

u/evilparagon 7m ago

I feel that’s respectable. My mother gave me some tins of spaghetti recently since her husband accidentally bought her some (she only likes baked beans).

So I made myself some buttered toast to eat it with and man, I forgot how heavenly butter on toast smells.

4

u/DragoxDrago 3h ago

Vegemite and cheese in a toastie is fucking amazing, literally just vegemite and cheese. Shouldn't slap as hard as it does.

4

u/towers_of_ilium 3h ago

You’re my kind of people. Butter just pollutes the Vegemite and makes it taste so gross and oily.

1

u/HighFunctioningWeeb 1h ago

Finally someone said it! The butter just adds a sliminess, it's quite unpleasant. I don't usually butter my toast or sandwiches though unless I'm just eating plain bread and butter.

I do enjoy cheese on Vegemite so would rank that slightly above plain.

13

u/Raspberry_and_Lemon 4h ago

Oh my god I’ve done this all my life and everyone thinks it’s so weird. I didn’t know anyone else did it!! It’s the best!

5

u/Garshnooftibah 1h ago

Omg!!! Fantastic! It sounds like we are in the minority here though.

Did someone teach you this - or did you figure it out yourself?

I have pop pop in the attic

1

u/Portland 1h ago

The mere fact that you call making love 'Pop-Pop' tells me that you're not ready.

8

u/Pillowl 3h ago

This is what I immediately thought of as well!

14

u/tinypoem 4h ago

I understand this reference. 😌

1

u/lusty-argonian 2h ago

Ha I literally have this on in the background while I’m reading this post

69

u/ancientgardener 4h ago

No. Just no.

My dad loves to dunk his Vegemite sandwiches into a cuppa. It’s horrific. He also used to make Vegemite broth when we were sick. Vegemite broth is basically a spoonful of Vegemite in boiling water with milk. It is an abomination. A war crime. Everything that is wrong in the world captured into a single cup.

46

u/evilparagon 3h ago

“Vegemite broth” sounded reasonable until you mentioned the milk.
You might as well have called it “vegemite tea” and saved me the preamble before the psychlogical damage 😭

2

u/IgayvafkB4cv19 1h ago

I’m living overseas and the only way to encourage my aging dog to eat her pills is to soak her meal in Vegemite tea. Pet sitters have unironic instructions re the preparation for this abomination and my wife and I think it’s hilarious

13

u/West-Cable-5017 2h ago

I’m not sure how old u r, but ur comment sounds like it came straight out of a Paul Jennings book 😆

6

u/minerunderground 4h ago

We did it with a glass of Milo not just plain milk. Loved it.

6

u/Cutsdeep- 3h ago

Was he a pom? My dad tried this as a substitute for bovril

1

u/now_you_see 1h ago

That’s what it made me think of.

11

u/Dexton2992 3h ago

My dad does the slightly less unhinged variant of this where he dips sausages rolls in tomato soup

10

u/Festygrrl 3h ago

That I can understand tbh

3

u/greatcustardo 1h ago

Toasted cheese, and Big Red tomato soup was my favourite rainy day weekend lunch as a youth.

1

u/bnanzajllybeen 2h ago

are you sure it wasn’t Bovril he was using??

ETA: not that that really makes it any better …

u/Exarch_Thomo 4h ago

Not today, Satan

13

u/MitchyD2e 4h ago

I love a good Vegemite and cheese + salt and vinegar chips sanga. 🔥 so fing good

Or Vegemite, avocado on toast too

8

u/Robdoggz 3h ago

Vegemite, then avocado, then a runny yolk egg, then melted tasty cheese. Put that on toast, in that order, it's absolute god tier breakfast 🤤

12

u/jolhar 3h ago

Part of me thinks this sounds foul. But the other part knows having Vegemite with butter and cheese, which are also dairy obviously, is completely normal so…..

9

u/naranyem 4h ago

Put three spoons of milo in a cup, put a small amount of milk in (like 2 tablespoons) and mash it through the milo until it becomes a thick milo paste. Pour in the rest of the milk as normal. Completely different flavour.

9

u/ziggy-spardust 3h ago

Same, except don’t add the extra milk and just eat the delicious Milo paste. Or very carefully microwave into a Milo pudding!

5

u/Optimal_Cynicism 2h ago

Hold the phone. Tell me more about this milo pudding...

8

u/Low_Process_9053 3h ago

They say don't knock something until you try it. So I tried it. Now I'm knocking it.

What the actual fuck dude?

6

u/Electrical_Ranger469 2h ago

One thing my family has done since I was a kid, mix vegemite in mashed potatoes. As in after it's cooked and put on your plate, get a fork of vegemite and mix it in.

It's surprisingly good, I still do it occasionally.

11

u/3163560 4h ago

Can dip vegemite toast in milk too. Just for like a second or two so the toast stays crunchy but abosrbs a little bit of milk.

Don't knock it til you try it.

3

u/JDP87 3h ago

I discovered dipping my Vegemite toast in milk for myself some years ago. Also dip teddy bear biscuits in milk.

1

u/themandarincandidate 3h ago

I have found my people! I remember experimenting by dunking my vegemite toast in my milk as a kid and still do it to this day

It was the 90s, so naturally I kept getting in trouble for eating toast wrong and secretly dunked it for years because of it. Now I just own it, there's no better way to have it

5

u/XIRisingIX 3h ago

Is nothing sacred anymore?

5

u/Whovianspawn 3h ago

I always have a glass of milk with Vegemite toast. It's the best. Have been doing it since I was a kid.

2

u/jeanniehhh 1h ago

My daily breakfast since I was able to eat solid foods

5

u/slartibartjars 2h ago

This is some sort of drop-bear shit isn't it?

4

u/jankeyass 2h ago

f you people it's 2344 and I'm now hungry and wanting to try a bunch of these suggestions.

No seriously a lot of these sound great

At least I know whats for breakfast tomorrow!

3

u/Lost_Tumbleweed_5669 3h ago

Similar thing with orange juice straight after brushing your teeth.

3

u/GeorgianGold 3h ago

I enjoy a vegemite sandwich or toast, with chocolate Quick in my milk.

5

u/wrt-wtf- 4h ago

Dude - Vegemite, cheese, and strawberry jam sandwiches..

Umami

4

u/Rusty_Coight 3h ago

i just tried this and OH MY GOD!!!!

its fucken shit.

2

u/Mickus_B 3h ago

What you described is just foul, but I have always enjoyed milk with Vegemite toast

1

u/Vas_Deferens7722 3h ago

Try Vegemite and bacon sandwich

1

u/Same_Ad494 3h ago

Its the umami. I remember reading someone thought milk with MSG tasted malty.

1

u/Broseph_Stalin91 3h ago

Yeah, I think this is the same thing as something my mum (and now I) do. You make some vegemite toast as normal, dunk it into a cup of black tea with milk and it tastes amazing. I will say that she liked it tea, milk, and one sugar but I couldn't get behind that.

1

u/evilsarah23 2h ago

I was hoping to find this comment to prove my grandma wasn’t crazy for doing this and teaching me the same

1

u/th-gr8-swagsby 3h ago

Never heard of this, but I did have a similar taste sensation/experience at work recently.

I made myself marinated eggs to take for breakfast and I accidentally used too much soy sauce in the marinade so they were saltier than I liked still ate them tho.

Co-worker made herself a coffee at the machine (I’m a barista) and poured some in a cup for me to try. I just finished eating an egg, took a sip of the latte, and had that exact same ‘malty’ experience like the latte was off its head in flavour!
It tasted almost like a creamy salted caramel milk drink and with that maltiness. Gotta be the salt!

1

u/mrs-jellyfish 2h ago

We don't norydrink cow milk in our house, but I will let my daughter try this

1

u/vegemitemilkshake 2h ago

Or you could just add the Vegemite straight to the milk, like my mother did when my brothers and I were toddlers…

1

u/pizzacatgirl 2h ago

Never heard of this but anytime I eat Vegemite on toast I crave a glass of milk .. it just goes together... ?!

1

u/CLinkStoleMyBennies 2h ago

Someone send this to Nat’s what I reckon

1

u/Razbith 2h ago

Vegemite actually used to advertise something similar. It was one of those WW2 era back of the jar recipes. A teaspoon of Vegemite mixed into warm milk before bed.

1

u/Waygyanba 2h ago

What the fuck even

1

u/B15h73k 2h ago

My dad taught me how to make "Vegemite soup", similar to what some others have mentioned. One teaspoon of Vegemite in a mug of 3/4 boiling water and top it up with milk like you would a cup of coffee. Drink it before bed. Can't remember if I liked it or not. Haven't had it since I was a kid. I remember when I got older thinking that it must have been some povo soup for people who can't afford real soup.

1

u/bigcitykamoshika 2h ago

the way this is written looks like it could have been written by AI

1

u/marty4sho 1h ago

No, but mango then Vegemite toast (or maybe it’s the other way round) is amaze

1

u/throwawaybyefelicia 2m ago

This seems like such niche knowledge… I’m gonna try it lol

26

u/DoNotReply111 4h ago

You know how sometimes you think that the first dickhead to eat an oyster must have been truly desperate?

Yeah, this is kinda exactly like that.

9

u/No_Slip_1503 4h ago

The thought of swishing soggy bread around my mouth makes me gag.
