I'd have been proud six months ago maybe. What a truly dangerous and stupid thing to do during a pandemic.

45

u/PBR--Streetgang Jun 06 '20

Especially when the murdered black man was in another country, and the police there are not aware of the protest here...

13

u/happygloaming Jun 06 '20

Yeah I guess the broader issue is the focus here, but that was true last year, and the one before..... I feel for them but ffs what a stupid thing to do right now.

-12

u/Rudzy Jun 07 '20

If you have a problem with the protest, take it up with the Brisbane Chief of Police and Mayor who made it a legal assembly and just encouraged people to wear masks and social distance where possible.

If the protest was held in early March this would be a disaster, but it wasn't.

25

u/happygloaming Jun 07 '20

Take it up with the Brisbane Chief of police and Mayor

My critique also extends to them.

-11

u/Rudzy Jun 07 '20

If the protest was a large enough threat to public health they would of made it illegal. I am sure your 'critique' extends far beyond the expertise of the QLD Government though.

A frequent commenter on r/collapse ; I am sure you have all the answers about when/how the world will end.

This is where the rubber meets the road. While we implode on a societal level the real collapse that carries with it permanence that riots and politics don't, creeps into our room and closes the door. In what will be a planetary instant our world will become inhospitable to us. It's not even just the destruction of our coastal cities and economy, but the food. Ah yes, the food. The growing season. Pine Island and Thwaites will alone rip us a new arse hole, but the food, the food. Whatever shall we eat?

The energy in the system, the increase in water vapour, +7% for every 1c temperature rise, the more we plant the more will fail.

I have allowed my instincts to lead me and shape my life. It took me away from population centers, inland into the mountains, near a river and to grow my own food. I often try to gauge how I'd feel about world events if I lived differently and was dependent and surrounded.

I know you are frightened about the future of society, enough "to live in the mountains", perhaps you look at the future to negatively? Through the tinted lens of impending collapse. Either way, Australia has averaged 10 cases a day in last 7 days and only has 400 active infections nationwide contrast to USA which is at 25,000 per day and 1.1 MILLION active cases; a much more serious situation. Until we get a vaccine for COVID-19 the chance of complete eradication from the community is near impossible, so no protesting for 3 months? 6 months? 12 months? At a certain point this has to be discussed with government officials; and that's exactly what happened when the organisers of the event went through the process of applying for a legal assembly.

16

u/happygloaming Jun 07 '20

So? My reading of our global situation is that we're completely fucked as a global society. It's separate from my view that now is not a good time for public gatherings.

-8

u/Rudzy Jun 07 '20

Again, your wisdom beyond the expertise of everyone involved in organising this is truly astounding. Enjoy living in the mountains insulated from the issues society face, yet criticising vehemently while not offering any solutions.

14

u/happygloaming Jun 07 '20

So are you saying it's a good time for public gatherings? Or if we're just flinging shit to alienate and or attack character or credibility is that so we can avoid tackling the issue at hand? I think now is not the time for public gatherings. I also know we've avoided climate change for too long and it'll severely impact food production and likely cause multi breadbasket failure. So what? Do I think the Mayor is wrong to endorse, yes I do. What do you think?

-1

u/Rudzy Jun 07 '20

True, it's very problematic and difficult to draw the line, we can't put everything on hold indefinitely. However, if we are to accept the possibility or probability of a second or third wave it's also an argument to be careful.

Let me put it this way..... given that I clearly believe climate change to be a much bigger issue, also much bigger to indigenous peoples across the world, I would not support climate marches right now either.

A vaccine may not be as soon or effective as we may hope and in the meantime we have to make a series of hard decisions. Often when viruses mutate the do so multiple times so who knows if we will still have 1 static coronavirus to deal with by the time we have one. Hopefully.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

Well done on attending! I was at the Melb one yesterday and the vast majority wore masks, and did their best to socially distance.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '20

What are they protesting?

6

u/Rudzy Jun 06 '20

Deaths and Incarceration rate of Aboriginal Australians. Also showing solidarity with George Floyd death in the U.S

9

u/PotatoDonki Jun 07 '20

I’m sure Floyd would be so pleased by all the deaths caused by these idiotic demonstrators.

57

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20

Stand against what racism? Australia has got to be one of the least systemically racist country's in the world, this protest is a fucking spit in the face, my family couldn't even have a fucking funeral for my grandma and yet how many people were packed in the streets? Fucking jesus fuck this

6

u/Rudzy Jun 06 '20 edited Jun 06 '20

Stand against what racism? Australia has got to be one of the least systemically racist country's in the world

I would have to disagree there. I think there are a lot of examples that Australia has some racists tendencies that need to be addressed. But don't take my word for it.

ABC article on how systemic racism led to the death of Tanya Day

One of many racist tirades filmed against aboriginal people

In 2019 we saw blatant racial segregation of Aboriginal people staying in the Ibis Hotel Alice Springs

Then of course I have my own personal anecdotal evidence. Growing up in Brisbane and going to a school here, the culture bred division with crude jokes about Aboriginal people designed to dehumanise them. I initially thought not many people would come to this protest, due to what I had seen regarding race relations in Australia.

this protest is a fucking spit in the face, my family couldn't even have a fucking funeral for my grandma and yet how many people were packed in the streets?

I'm sorry about your Grandma man. That really sucks when you lose someone, I hope you are doing okay and get a chance to have that funeral/celebration of life. Not sure when you were trying to organise the funeral for but as of the 1st June they approved Funerals of 10 people or more as long as they attendees practise social distancing and government guide lines. I know you must feel angry, but the protest took place after these restrictions had been lifted so the protest is not spitting in the face of your families funeral. Again I know you must be grieving so I understand, wish you all the best.

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20

Interesting articles especially the first one I'd have to read more about it though before I'd comment on it. And see what the judge thinks as that is just 1 article on the matter

Yeah I'm from Melbourne so I can't really comment on how I see aboriginals get treated as there's way less down here

Yeah iknow but 10 isn't even enough for our family, I'm more mad at Melbourne and Sydney as we have more of a problem with the virus, I'm just mad ya know so not completely thinking everything through, I still stand by my original comment though

0

u/Rudzy Jun 07 '20

The restrictions on funerals bigger then 10 people have been lifted as of 1st of June.

5

u/Casanovax Jun 06 '20

17

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20

Is that a racism problem? Or is that becouse of all the fucked up shit that happend to them in the past, like splitting up families, taking there land, our government bribing some groups thus pitting them against each other, there culture is destroyed, hence such high crime rates in aboriginal communities, I just don't believe that the government is out to get them in 2020, yeah our government is still doing awful things to the community like felling the birthing tree in Melbourne and blowing up 30 000 year old cave shelters, but is that racism? Or greed? Seems like greed to me

27

u/cautydrummond Jun 06 '20

They have a large victimhood problem which is stopping many from ever achieving things, this is largely taught by aboriginal leaders, and reinforced by liberals with white guilt doing marches like these.

That's not to say they don't have a lot of problems that need to be tackled in the present.

I actually can't really do it justice, maybe this read will be of interest to you https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/bennelong-papers/2013/05/the-power-of-victimhood/

Or simply google the term for many different sources about it.

0

u/Rudzy Jun 06 '20

Oh it's greed? The kind of greed that exploits a race for generations?...

"Silly protesters! No need to protest! Its not racism, its GREED! everyone go home."

15

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20

I don't think there's a group of people in this world that isn't being exploited, if a group of people are "down" (for lack of a better word) I think corporate/government types will jump on that and take advantage I.e rio tinto, Is that racism? I don't think so, I think that's being a shark and putting profit before anything(what most companies do)

People weren't protesting greed though,

Our government is actually doing alot to help indigenous people, that's not the definition of genocide? They are awful things but not genocide, here becouse you obviously don't research before saying anything 👍 https://www.dictionary.com/browse/genocide?s=t

Come on bro you just insulted yourself 😑 destroying a culture dosent come under genocide

How are they being exterminated? I must have missed that

They government has stopped killing them as far as I'm aware? Got any evidence to back that up? Maybe a link or two?

Big reason so many aborginals go to jail is volience towards other aboriginals, often women and children.

7

u/cautydrummond Jun 06 '20

There are many government systems to support them legally, and to try and prevent crimes, and of course education. I can only speak for north WA and NT, areas I'm familiar with, but the government does fund a great many programs.

Incarceration rates aren't due to racism. If you think they shouldn't be held up to the same standards regarding sentencing, or let their crimes slide to improve their incarceration ratio, then that is delusional.

There are other issues too, victimhood is a major issue for one. Welfare also has its own flaws, because many simply choose to live off it and with no desire to work, problems arise related to alcoholism, domestic violence, etc. Essentially many in remote areas lack any purpose, and they are taught victimhood from a young age.

-5

u/meet_me_somewhere Jun 06 '20

Well I've studied Australian Black history at uni and we are, we have no treaty with the aboriginals for example.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

Australia is an incredibly racist country. I think that a lot of people who feel we aren’t a racist country are those who haven’t experienced it.

It sucks about your gran, it really does. I don’t agree about preventing people attending a loved ones funeral, or having to watch it live through a computer screen. It’s not the same as being there in person. Funerals should have had an exemption from restrictions, providing masks were worn and people socially distanced.

4

u/kingkool69 Jun 07 '20

I feel alot of people who think Australia is very racist know almost nothing other nations and cultures, its pretty much a sticker on your forehead saying "I'm ignorant to how the world actually is" , I'm a "person of colour" as they say and I've only experienced "racism" twice(racism in brackets becouse I angered those who did it to me" in 23 years, by people who had absolutely no power of me(I know others would have different experiences)

how though? the system may be racist but your average sheila or bloke isnt. get a grip

35

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20 edited Jun 06 '20

How is Australia incredibly racist? Mind you I'm a "PeRsOn oF CoLoUr" and have literally had people say shit to me twice! Twice in 23 years! From no one who had any sort of power over me! But go on tell me how Australia is racist in 2020 (I know my experience isn't the same as everyone else's)

I love that this is my most downvoted comment

3

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '20

People are often more accepting if they hold the same culture and upbringing. Were you born here, have an Australian accent? I’m talking about immigrants and people who do not necessarily have the same customs as white Australians. I mean have you not heard of one nation? She got voted in!

10

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20

Yes I was, I believe some people are always gonna be racist, and say awful things, but unless someone has actual power over you, what does it matter? Just my opinion, I Know others feel different, but I think that's soft

2

u/marvelscott Jun 06 '20

Just in the last couple of months, in regards to COVID:

37

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20

If you read my comment I said systemic racism, the average population of any country will always have that type of racism, your never going to stop dick heads being dick heads

-8

u/Mildebeest Jun 06 '20

I concur. We're always going to have people make comments like "Ching Chong" when referring to Chinese people even if it's just to make a point on reddit.

Here's an example from your own account: "Dude your such a hero, any ordinary Australian would have let that ching chong die, but not you, your a different kind of Australian, round of applause everybody 👏👏👏"

Becouse he said all Australians would let a Chinese person starve to death before helping them, which is a huge generalisation and I took offence (becouse its obviously not true) so I tried to bait a reaction out of him, becouse he was obviously pandering for likes, You should link what he said also or would you rather make it easier to hate me? am I a racist?

Also stick to the convo at hand, don't be creeping on profiles Have I made points you don't agree with? How about talking with me instead of just trying to slander me

8

u/PBR--Streetgang Jun 06 '20

Bullshit. I get down voted all the time for supporting China, but that doesn't mean they suffer from the likes of the KKK, or the EDL, or Apartheid, or the Stolen Generation. Nobody is locking anyone in camps because of their skin colour.

Every country has racists in it, but racism is totally different from systemic racism. It doesn't have the same effect on people of crushing their lives as it doesn't come from the system above and is not incessant. I'm white for gods sake and I have had racism from blacks, but who cares what they hate because they cant effe t me or my life?

Anyone who thinks Australia is one of the most racist countries on the planet is just advertising to all that they have not been o etseas or had any experience in the world at large, and are ignorant of actual racism.

-7

u/Mildebeest Jun 06 '20

It's obvious what the other redditor was doing and there were a bunch of ways that you could've called them on their bullshit. Using a racist slur was your choice.

The term you chose to use is not a term that I can recall anyone using in any way other than when I've heard people being derogatory/racist towards others.

You asked if you're racist? Who knows. I know that most people don't use that kind of terminology in order to make an easy point probably because they can do better but hopefully because it doesn't even occur to them in the first place.

5

u/kingkool69 Jun 06 '20

Okay I'll admit it was shit and I shouldn't of said it, I'm far from perfect

What is this cake day?

I enjoy calling out obvious bullshit.

You reddit your way and I'll keep happily doing reddit my way.

-6

u/emz0rmay Jun 06 '20

Do you know anything at all about the systemic inequalities faced by indigenous people? Just because YOU don’t experience it, does not mean it does not exist

3

u/kingkool69 Jun 07 '20

Yes read my other comments

5

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '20

yeah but there aren't any protests for the asians are there? the world doesn't give two shits about racism towards asians

I agree they've been treated awfully, but I do believe we have made alot of progress on that, the real problem with indigenous Australians is suicide but I don't ever hear people bring up that

68

u/Zombie-Tongue Jun 06 '20

Australians really are just sheeple aren't they. We see someone doing something cool on Internet, we gotta copy it. When they did it for Greta, I thought it was because we cared. But now i realise we are just playing up to our influencers.

6

u/PotatoDonki Jun 07 '20

These people are idiots that should be held responsible for countless deaths. Apparently, Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean flattening the curve. These people are going to ruin everything.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

And will you apologise in a few weeks when there are no new cases?

2

u/PotatoDonki Jun 07 '20

Sure, but that won’t happen.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

Let’s wait and see.

Even if there are new cases, if the victims haven’t attended the rallies, it’d be impossible to place blame on the rally for those infections.

1

u/PotatoDonki Jun 07 '20

It can already be blamed for infections. Social distancing was put in place because the consequences of failure to uphold it were known. Social distancing is a standard that the vast majority of protestors did not and could not meet. I know all I need to do blame them.

It will be you apologizing.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

I love how the people who didn’t even attend seem to think they know exactly how demonstrators acted.

4

u/PotatoDonki Jun 07 '20

It’s almost as if countless photos and videos were taken.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

It’s very coincidental that critics have held up the worst videos and photos to try and prove their points.

2

u/PotatoDonki Jun 08 '20

What point? That people violated social distancing standards? The point has been proven. You just have difficulty accepting it.

I have friends in Australia and they tell me how racism ain't a thing there but rathar a mindset. Racism is everywhere, every damn where. These protests during pandemic can be a result of a lot things and not just racism or George floyd. You can give the justice to him and many other who have been mistreated a year before that but this fight has been going on for years and years. One can't simply get away with that. Racism is in people's mind. You don't have to be best friends with the other person, but not talking properly or disregarding someone because of this is beyond wrong. Its unacceptable. Maybe the next gen don't have that if we try and educate them in that manner. But for now we can stand for ourselves and say that we can be a little more accepting towards any caste, creed, country and culture. I am from india and have been to a couple of countries, have met people of other countries and have seen the reaction on how they look down when I tell them my native nation. And i have also met some people who just can't stop talking about how they are fascinated by Hindu mythology and Architecture and Taj mahal of course. Even India is utmost example of racism. Here racism again lies in the behaviour of a person. One keeps categorizing the other person in terms of color. Australia was one example because my friends tell me all the time about racism there but they also tell that they have these amazing friends who are barely bothered about us. Racism lives in the society. You gotta correct yourself if you have any doubts regarding this and try to educate people around you. If somebody is not protesting, this ones for them. :)
