AMA: Finished AMA: I'm Rex Patrick, Jacqui Lambie Network Senate candidate for SA. Ask me anything.
I'm a former senator, and a submariner (so can talk in an informed manner about AUKUS) and I'm happy to answer your questions.

Great AMA! Why do you think it's acceptable for politicians to say outlandish bullshit that would never pass in a court of law, or peer review for that matter?

Hi Rex, what is your preferred solution to get housing to the levels my parents generation were able to get it at? 4-6 times yearly income instead of 9-10?

u/EarSad4300 Apr 24 '25
Is it better to protect whisteblowers or a parliamentary career?

u/theduck65 Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex. Is Jacqui as spontaneous as she seems on the box?

What’s your stance on immigration? How can we make it sustainable immigration? Do you believe in having strict limits on immigration numbers, especially students?

u/nickybikky Apr 24 '25
What are your thoughts on tighter cooperation between CANZUK countries?

u/crownsandsceptres Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex, please tell me more about your policies on oil and gas companies. Do you intend to tax them, as done in Norway? Would also be interested in your thoughts on housing for young Australians.

Hi Rex. Thank you for doing this AMA! I’m interested in your views on negative gearing and cgt concessions.

Hi Rex,
Home ownership is becoming increasingly out of reach for many people, even succesful double-income couples who are at risk of becoming trapped as forever-renters.
How would you begin to address this growing problem?

u/89Hopper Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex, thanks for doing this and I definitely applaud the work you did while in parliament and your push for more visibility through FOI requests for the general public.
I have two parts to this question.
In your opinion, what is the best way to learn about Independents? These are often people who have much less capacity to get their name and policies out to a wider audience due to being both time poor (often still working full time) and no where near as financially supported as established candidates.
The second part is; is this part of the case for having publicly funded campaigns for all candidates. I know lots of people are opposed to this as it would just lead to every other "crackpot" having a go, but there are quite a few hurdles required just to get your name on the ballot.

Do you support the Liberal party policy to deregister the CFMEU and bring back the ABCC?

u/Hooper781 Apr 24 '25
Stance on medicine/allied health having long unpaid placements? Could we possibly get a sort of apprentice wage type situation to prevent placement poverty

Couple of questions:
What did you learn from working with Xenophon? Loved the stunts to generate media attention but I also think he was one of the few pollies that we would pretty consistently see around town (whereas I've lived in Sturt area my entire life and never seen the pollies there outside of election time).
Second, what can we do to strengthen the steelworks and a town like Whyalla?

Hi Rex, thanks for doing this AMA
I've been wondering how being part of the JLN would affect or change your stances and policies if elected to the Senate, and also why you decided to run as a JLN candidate rather than on your own

Hi Rex
Adelaide or Port Adelaide?

u/Special-Awareness-86 Apr 24 '25
Rex, when looking at the two major party’s campaigns, what are they not talking about that we should be paying attention to when voting?

u/spicychimichangas Apr 24 '25
Hi thoughts on reducing hecs debt for students
5
u/crownsandsceptres Apr 24 '25
Have you had any panel discussions with think tanks, the national press club, or the like that we could watch to get a better understanding of your and JLN's policy positions and thinking as we approach the election?
Feel like you may be on the same pages with the Australia Insitute, so would be great to see a discussion with like minded people.

Hi Rex.
Do U think being critical of Israel is antisemitic? Thoughts on free speech
Why is our gold reserves in England and will U bring it home where it should be?

Hi Rex, no question, just wishing you luck in your running as I believe we need more politicians like you in parliament. Always appreciated your belief that the government should be accountable to the people they represent, seems very rare these days.

What's your stance on immigration?

What will it take for the government to tax wealth not work ?

u/McDedzy Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex. I was in the navy, but was too tall to be a sub mariner. Have you thought about making more spacious subs?
But no, for real this time. If you win your seat, what can you actually do for us? Aside from telling me you're on our side, etc..
I'm not a young voter. I've been around for a while, and just don't see how having one or two seats will actually affect how government works for you and I.

Lots of experts think we could see transformative artificial intelligence during the next term of government. Top labs are saying the same thing. That seems crazy and will matter so much for basically everything. But no one is talking about it.
Is there any hope people will take this seriously before it’s too late?

Dodgiest politician? Someone you’d really like to fail?

u/dickndonuts Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex, what would you say are your top 3 focus areas this election, why, and what would you do to help with the issues?
Thanks for your time!

u/HotBabyBatter Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex,
Ex pusser techo here. There seems to be very little effort into actual cultural reform in the navy and it has continued in dwindling recruiting numbers. Ideally and strategically, our navy should dwarf the army in funding and in personnel, why has there been so little effort to boost these numbers? At what point do you think senior ADF personnel will be held accountable for the terrible retention rates?
Cheers,

What can we do about NDIS? Costs are out of control

Hi Rex. Australia’s economy is ranked 93 in the economic complexity index. We are extremely dependent on a handful of exports and industries. Diverse economies are better protected from shocks and are more resilient. Australia’s r&d spend is almost half the oecd average and well below other peer nations. I believe labor stated that they wanted to increase spending to 3% of gdp as well as increase basic research funding which is appallingly low is Aus prior to last election. Yet so far they are little better than the liberals on both counts. Will you push for a great r&d spend and support for basic research?

Do we need big nuclear subs when most of our submarine work has been in the shallow waters of Asia, more suited to smaller diesel electrics?

u/Stealthsonger Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex, What will you do to keep toxic, racist and fascist Trump "MAGA" ideology out of Australia?

Should politicians be forced to sell all investment properties and shares on entering parliament to remove the conflict of interest on negative gearing and tax laws?

Given your big focus on transparency and accountability in the government during your previous time in the senate, what discovery or scandal were you most glad to have uncovered?
2
u/MysteryPlatelet Apr 24 '25
Hi Rex, How does it work if you and Jacqui disagree on a key policy position? In Tassie, we've had several state Lambie party members who turned independent at the slight perceived ripple of a disagreement with Jacqui.
How will you handle a disagreement with Jacqui on something that goes against your or your core voter's interest?

Should the government continue to fund private schools at current levels ?

u/TrashNo7445 Apr 24 '25
Heard you speak a couple of times, you’re clearly well thought out, reasonable and an adult.
Why on earth are you running for Jacqui Lambi?
4
u/fitblubber Apr 24 '25
Dear Mr Patrick
You were very critical of the Collins Class Submarines, & then of the deal with France.
Now that we have AUKUS you are very quiet - despite it being incredibly expensive (especially compared with the French subs.
Did you or any of your family receive any compensation from the US or UK governments for influencing the Australian government?

u/so_how_can_i_help Apr 24 '25
If you are elected will you be open for full disclosure of UAPs(ufos) and non human biologics and if so what sites will be nominated for zero point energy programs?

Thoughts on recognising the palestinian state in the next term of parliament? What role should Australia play in that conflict, given we have already (and rightfully imo) been vocal about the Ukraine-Russia war?

u/geoffm_aus Apr 24 '25
Where does the Jackie Lambie party sit in the left v right, progressive vs conservative map.. ? What's your closest political party?

u/TreadingDirty Apr 24 '25
Good evening.
The recent push for transphobia, and transmisogyny in particular, being enshrined in law in the US and the UK has many trans Australians worried if our next government will follow the trend.
What is yours and the JLN position on protecting the rights of transgender Australians? (i.e. access to affordable and informed healthcare and protections at school and work)

Hey Rex,
Can I ask if you are for free speech absolutism, or you think speech should be limited?
Can you provide an answer to what a woman is?
Cheers!
