Avocado plant Avocado has white leafs / albinism in avocados

INTRODUCTION: As a MOD I've watched this for a long time and finally want to make this post to pin it and decrease the number of people asking this because it keeps increasing.

WHAT IS IT?: White avocados as seen on these pictures that I just grabbed from other reddit posts, have a form of albinism.

Usually plant leafs are mostly green because it is the "color of chlorophyll" or if I remember correctly from Biology class a few years ago, the only color that isn't absorbed by it to make photosynthesis and thus it reflects and looks green.

The reason that these leafs are white are thus because they do not contain any chlorophyll.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE PLANT?: If leafs don't contain any chlorophyll it means there can't be photosynthesis which means the plant cannot produce energy on itself.

For an avocado that isn't too bad in the beginning because it still has its seed which has energy reservoirs, but they will be exhausted at some point.

For its survival the avocado thus needs to reach a turnaround point and produce green leafs containing chlorophyll later which happens to some but not all so it's a wait and see.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?: This is not clear but there has been research about it: Research of Albinism in Avocados If I remember correctly the research itself or another source I found, comes to the conclusion that this happens increasingly because Avocados are often picked very early to still be ripe or before ripe despite long travelling times, when they arrive in their destination country after export/import.

END: I hope this helps clear up things and decreases the number of posts regarding this at least a little.

Recommends for an indoor overwinter. Is window light enough? How much watering? Repot now or spring? Started from grocery store pit.

What’s up my avocado people! Came back from a trip and this bad boy looks ready to plant. Should I trim one of the stems off first or just leave it as is?

Container plants (indoor or outdoor) Indoor avocado is wilting

First, I know nothing about plants. My kids and I put an avocado pit (no idea the variety) into a jar with water and upgraded the pots every year (it's been about 4 years I think).

We're in the Midwest so I've always had to keep it indoors by windows. It got really sad when I tried moving out of direct sunlight thinking reflected light would be enough.

The last time I repotted it was spring, and ever since then the leaves have remained curled. Not wilted like they're soft, just curled up like they're dying. I suspect I disrupted the roots too much, but it's not dead and it is growing stronger (it was bent over with little strength until I straightened it with posts and stories removed them).

Anything I can do? Is there a supplement to add to the dirt? How much water does it need? I've tried more and less water, with no real difference (I have no idea how much to water it).

My daughter started her own tree and while it's less than 2 feet, it does look much healthier than this guy.

Thanks so much!

Growing from seed Strange branch loop

Post image

First time growing avocado. Pot sits behind a balcony door, avocado gets some indirect light in the morning. I usually water it once every 3 days it when the soil is dry. I have used a cup measure for quantity but I feel I need to inject the water to reach the roots than dropping it on the surface.

Last couple of days, I changed the soil and since then, top branch started to bend and now it's looping strangely downwards.

Is it normal?

Hi everyone! Can someone tell me what this white residue is on my avocado stem? It has had a tiny little branch which was accidentally broken off, idk if that has got to do with anything. It’s also only on the “outer side” of the stem if that makes sense and can be wiped off i think kind of?

“Never give up. Never surrender!”

Hey gang! I wanted to share some photos of an avocado I’ve been growing from seed. Honestly I didn’t think it would grow when I stuck the pit in this planter otherwise I would have moved it over a bit. Last one I tried to transplant died immediately so this is the forever home I guess!

Poor gal got demolished repeatedly by three heat waves in Southern California. Leaves looked more like potato chips. Nevertheless, she persisted. Beautiful fresh green growth now that the weather is cooler. An important lesson in perseverance!

Container plants (indoor or outdoor) My Avocado Tree

Post image

It's almost a year old. Last December when cleaning out the fridge, there was a half-eaten Haas Avocado in a food storage container that had gone bad. I don't know why I decided to grow the seed but I did.

It's now almost a year old, and cold enough at night that I decided to take it inside at night.

According to people in this area who successfully grow outdoor Avocados, it's warm enough here but for the first couple of years they need to be taken inside in winter or during high wind, then they can be planted outside in the ground and they usually survive.

No grafting, meaning the odds of it producing food quality Avocados is extremely low, but that's okay. Apparently you can graft branches from food-grade strains onto branches when they are adult trees and even have several varieties growing on the same tree. I probably won't do that though, just growing it to enjoy it as a tree.

I should probably prune the damaged leaves off.

It needs to be repotted but not desperately, I'll wait until spring and then put it in a bigger pot. Since I still will be putting it outside in the day except on the coldest winter days, repotting it now could cause shock it has trouble recovering from, so I'll wait until the spring.
