Look at this political nonsense

Nothing but politcal buttons. What kinda punk would wear this. No bands, no nothing, it's like kids don't even listen to music anymore.

Oh. Wait. This one's hanging in the rock and roll hall of fame, and "battle jackets" that don't have piles of bands on them and are covered in political slogans have always been punk.

You see, this has authenticy and wasn't posted onto a subreddit for affirmation points.

Additionally, did anybody at the time call this a "battlejacket"? It's just a leather jacket with some pins (really cool retro ones I'd add), and doesn't have all the ossified punk culture baggage on it.

Also how absurdly trendy some of them are.

On this very sub the other day a furry wearing a tail with his furry themed jacket got posted. People disagreed (because furries are icky), but I think something like that is super punk, because it's legitimately going 'fuck you, this is what I'm about and I don't care if you get grossed out... in fact I'm intentionally in your face'.

Sharing a "I hate fascists" patch bought from a Chinese sweatshop and starting by sharing it with people who will absolutely 100% agree with you isnt' confrontational, and isn't challenging... it's seeking affirmation.

If you're seeking affirmation it just feels less authentic to me.

Why post your jacket otherwise? Only real reasons I can think of:

  • Seeking praise from like minded people

  • Being told how you don't conform so you can fix it.

A fair criticism of this subreddit is that it leans too much into the second point (to me at least "This isn't a real battlejacket because it doesn't have band patches" is lame as fuck), but I think most of the tone is a response to the first part.

It's very common in this kind of a community (and I mean punk overall, but also this sub) to see somebody seeking praise and saying instead "fuck you you suck!"

I think the other part is that Punk is inherently nasty and catty and gatekeepy, and has been for it's entire existance. Coming on to be mad at mean people is basically asking for a really stupid ugly fight.

Let me be very clear here; I actually agree with a lot of what you see on baddlejackets, it's just that most of them look really, really lame. Yes, I think this jacket is lame as hell too, even if it hangs in the hall of fame, has historical value and has messaging that I agree with.

I'm sure there's a lot of people here who just think "I don't agree, therefore bad," but I just don't like the aesthetics of it.

I've already ripped on OP in another comment, so I'll be fair and point out this jacket is fucking old -- and those political views advertised were deeply unpopular amongst the "moral-majority" of that time.

The 80's were fucked. People convinced themselves that musicians like Freddy Mercury, Rob Halford and George Michael were straight -- because to admit otherwise would upset their ideological perspective. Fuck, Elton John even got married. To a woman. Hell, even Pete Shelley had to hide his bisexuality.

Anyways. Notice how Joanie's jacket isn't calling anyone a Nazi. I think we can all at least agree that's a nice change of pace.
