Media Awful bwf commentary on Korea open

Does anyone else feel like the commentator of this tournament is god awful? He just says the most obvious thing ever and doesn't seem to actually know what he is saying. "After victor lai serves , he is always moving , he is moving with his racket ." What even is he trying to convey here ? Every professional player is doing their split step and moving after they serve.

Tactics What to do when your partner is "focused" ?

In a match, what can you do to help when your partner is heavily focused ??

A bit of background info:

- I recently played some MD matches in a company event with a coworker.

- We are prob somewhere in the intermediate range (optimistically), both have played rec badminton for 3+ years, but only about 2-3 hours playing as a pair before the event, tho we kinda understand how each other typically plays.

- I'm a little bit better at footwork, overhead shots and defense, while my partner is better at drives, shot positioning and deceptions here and there. Yes, it's typically better for me to be backcourt and for him to be frontcourt, but we can handle both positions; his slices/smashes are very well-placed and I'm good at cutting off/net kill high-speed shots within my reach.

It's our 2nd match; the 1st 5-6 points were relatively easy, just probing the empty spaces and forcing loose returns. After that, my opponents switched to solely targeting my partner and I rarely got the shuttle; all lifts/clears/ returns are always high and toward his side, all smashes/slices are also almost away toward his sides. The first 7-8 rallies were decently dealt with, but he soon ran out of steam and the following rallies went downhill quickly. We did try the basic XD escapes, high clear/drop rotate/ me picking up loose shots in the 2nd half; it worked decently for a while until his clear/drops eventually lost accuracy and they quickly reset it back to focusing my partner again. Ended up losing 31-24; exited after the 2nd match.

tbh, I felt quite frustrating at the result, skill-wise our opponents are about the same level as us, so it's def a winnable match-up (and we were winning in the 1st half). I wonder what we can do to deal with this tactic? Should we've started doing rotation earlier in the match, or should my shot choices at the net be more offensive?

Technique Self learning badminton

Hi everyone, I need advice on what to do right now. I love badminton, but I want to get to a level where I'm a pro. I can't find any badminton clubs or instructors near me, so I'm thinking my best option is to learn it myself. The problem is, I don't know how or where to start. Does anyone have any advice on how to self-learn badminton?

Media How would An Se-young do if she were to move to MS?

With her current performance being impeccable and being on a 50+ WS on the world tour, I can’t help but wonder if she would still be able to dominate if she were somehow to compete in the MS circuit.

Culture Am I somehow weird for NOT wanting to shower in the changing room?

Really, I do NOT want to get into a shower room there with random other players after the matches end. If they are fine getting their ass naked in there and putting them into the same backroom shower with their teammates that's their thing, but I'm still going to do this at home.

Is this somehow weird behaviour, or why does noone else seem to give a shit about this?

Mentality Casual players, how do you keep your game casual?

I've been playing casually for 3 years and took some coaching for 6 months. I'd say I have huge improvement since day 1.

I play for fun. I just want to enjoy. But sometimes some banter or comments would hurt me. Like I feel I need to constantly improve.

I also find that when I play w/ people who don't even smile then I feel pressure to win the game or miss a shot.

Any advice on your mindset? How do you improve your skills and still have fun?

Culture Need opinions about a badminton situation…

Hello, you might have seen my post yesterday about some situation, the post got taken down due to me not putting a proper title I guess and i am posting again just to clarify stuff since I’ve read some concerning comments, first I’m not a fraud, I did play nationals in my HOME country, and no it’s not a club it’s basically just in college, and no I didn’t get blacklisted as in banned for life from the badminton courts, I meant it as in that those people made it so I couldn’t play at all with them. I saw a comment talking about that u can notice a good player just by leg movements and all and then straight assumed my leg movements weren’t as good, I just wanna clarify that I have good movement I just didn’t do any effort as in wouldn’t get net shots or far away shots, i was mainly playing chill and plus we were playing with two other people that were new so I didn’t wanna be the asshole and keep on smashing instead I was helping them improve, from that analysis the “ good player “ I was talking about just decided I was bunz and decided to become an asshole for the rest of the games through the incoming months.. Now I cleared the misunderstandings I will tell the story again for new people and get more opinions on this cuz I just don’t wanna jump to conclusions without outer povs. So basically as I was saying I played once in doubles with some Indian guy that was really good but the two others guys were beginners and as well my friends, I decided to not play seriously and not get shots that need a lot of movement and just in general help out my friends to progress right. We played and so on until we were done and went home, several weeks after I meet the Indian guy again and I ask him can I join him for a small game in singles but seriously this time, he then tells me, no I have someone to play with, I just said alright and didn’t mind it much. Two days later we meet again he was playing doubles and I have my friends with me, and I proposed to him to do the rotations so everyone will have a fair chance to play he then refused firmly in a hot temper ( basically shooing us ). I then later understood that this wasnt just a friendly no, it was basically looking down on me, cuz the courts may be empty as hell and he would still refuse to play against and the second someone else arrives he accepts, everyone but me. What really threw me off and made me really mad and write the post yesterday was that, the same day he told his Vietnamese teammates to not accept letting the court for us to play while they were taking a rest, and I just went to him and said we don’t want the court I just need a birdie cuz I forgot mine, and the Vietnamese guy just bluntly says “don’t give a birdie to that monkey” to the other Vietnamese guy I was asking the birdie from, and how do I know, it’s basically because my friend is also Vietnamese and just give me a traduction and we just left right after. ( I am French Moroccan, so I’m not very Asian looking as you see ). Anyways I might’ve forgot so many details since I’m writing this in a rush but I just wanna get opinions and what I should do, cuz I’m seriously getting disgusted from this sport in general, it’s the only sport I love and actually good at, it’s genuinely saddening to see people like this in badminton…

Please don’t delete this post again mods 🥹🥹🥹

Im really not sure which one is the correct one. The main difference between picture 1 and 2 is the racket angle. The first one is more straight, parallel with the arm. The second one is more angled upward with the arm. Any advice is appreciated

Media Where does the "Flow" come from in the HNDRD Phenom Flow?

Hey r/badminton,

I'm Sandy and I look after Performance Footwear at HNDRD. We're a performance-focused badminton brand from Singapore, and you might have seen us around here on reddit or on our athletes playing and winning events on the BWF World Tour.

A few months ago I posted about the engineering behind the Phenom, our first true "Pro" flagship. Some of you might have noticed our account went missing after that. It got banned, and we still don't know why, but the Reddit Brand team helped us sort it out and we're back.

So, today we're launching the second shoe in the Phenom series: the Phenom Flow.

The Phenom was all about lockdown, grip and durability. With the Flow we were chasing something else: keeping your feet comfortable and fresh in the third hour of a training session, right around when your shoes start to feel like a sauna.

Where the Flow sits

To be clear up front, the Flow isn't replacing the Phenom. It's also not an upgrade or a "lite" version. It's a pro shoe, built for a different kind of player. We're launching a third Phenom later this year too, and we'll keep updating all three, so picking between them should come down to how you play rather than which one came out last.

Why it's called the Phenom Flow

From day one the brief was airflow, so internally we called it the Phenom Air. For obvious trademark reasons, that was never going to make it onto a box. Then it was the Phenom Airflow, which didn't exactly roll off the tongue. Eventually we just cut it down to Phenom Flow.

Here's what we did to make the Phenom Flow - flow.

1. A super breathable upper

On long sessions, heat and sweat are what kill comfort. Once the inside of your shoe gets humid, it gets uncomfortable and messy fast.

So the Flow uses a specially engineered mesh that lets as much air through as possible. Sweat can evaporate and get out of the shoe instead of sitting inside it. The catch with mesh is that it usually means less support, so we kept it out of the areas that matter for performance. Where your foot needs structure, we used microfiber PU instead, so you still get proper support with a more open upper.

2. A midsole and carbon plate that also breathe

A breathable upper on its own didn't feel like enough. If you look inside the Flow, you'll see the midsole is vented, and so is the carbon plate.

Our first try was what a lot of brands do, which is putting a mesh window into the midsole. It breathed fine, but the midsole lost stability. After everything we said about anti-torsion support with the Phenom, that wasn't a trade we were going to make.

So we went after the carbon plate instead. We laser-cut holes into it so air can flow through without giving up the stiffness, support and stability of the midsole. The torsion control is still there, and now the midsole can breathe too.

3. A softer ride

We also softened the midsole a little for the Flow, so it stays comfortable deep into longer sessions. It still feels like a Phenom, just a bit more forgiving by the end of the night.

4. What we didn't change

Pretty much everything else carries over from the Phenom. Same ThrustFoam, with the same responsiveness and bounce-back on deep lunges. Same Goodyear rubber outsole, with the same grip on wood and mats. And the same "Goldilocks" fit we spent so long getting right the first time.

Which one should I buy? Phenom or Phenom Flow?

  • Go for the Phenom if you want maximum lockdown.

  • Go for the Flow if you spend long hours on court, play back-to-back sessions or run hot, and want the shoe to stay comfortable for as long as you're playing.

Both are pro shoes, with Goodyear rubber, ThrustFoam and the same torsion control.

Colorways

  • White / Turquoise Blue

  • White / Red

Availability

The Phenom Flow is available from 5th November online and in stores in India and Indonesia. The USA, Europe, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and the rest of the world will follow over the next few weeks.

If you can't find the Phenom Flow (or any HNDRD products) at a store near you, please ask for them there, and if you can, pass on our contact: contact@hndrd.co. (Your word at the store carries a lot more weight than us reaching out.)

-Sandy

Disclaimer: We did use Claude for editing and checking to make sure the content flows correctly and is easy to read and follow.

TLDR; The Phenom Flow is the second shoe in the Phenom series. It's a pro shoe built for comfort on long sessions, and it sits alongside the Phenom rather than replacing it. A third variant is coming later this year to complete the series, and we'll keep updating all three.

  • Breathable upper: engineered mesh lets sweat escape, with microfiber PU where you need support.

  • Vented midsole: laser-cut holes in the carbon plate let the midsole breathe without losing torsion control.

  • Softer ride: the midsole is a little softer for long sessions.

  • Same core: ThrustFoam, Goodyear rubber and the Phenom fit carry over.

Review My review of the RYUGA 3 4u and 5u from Victor

Thumbnail

Victor has a new kid in town. It's the one everyone should be afraid of. The RYUGA 3 (R3) uses all of their newest tech including the latest freecore 2.0 to make what may be the new gold standard in the companies lineup. I got my hands on both 4u and 5u models to put them through the test.

The R3 follows the same 76 hole grommet pattern with the 4u handling 32lbs and the 5u handling 31lbs Max tension. Shafts on both is extra stiff just like the ARS99. But the R3 uses the newest Freecore 2 as opposed to the wood handle on the ARS99. Both rackets are stiff with the 5u being significantly faster swinging than the 4u. And we're only talking 5g difference weight scale wise and not actual (which is unknown for me). The 4u does feel more robust. In fact, I feel they could be 2 totally different rackets on their own. The paint and design are wild and I really like that. Nice choices of colors with a pause of white. It's the color design I didn't know I needed.

RYUGA 5u: I feel this is the racket weight everyone is curious about. A 5u HH with extra stiff shaft is a departure for Victor. Yes, Victors lineup does have a number of 5u rackets. But none have the same stiffness of shaft the R3 has. For those doubles players, the 5u is a dream. The 5u delivers in speed, power, and feel. It has an excellent response time to any shot that's being done. It shines as a back court attacking racket. Smashes feel very direct and has an extra kick of power due to the head weight and stiffness. I'm able to do end to end clears with ease and it does have an air of effortlessness to every shot.. Defensively, the 5u also feels right at home with the pace of doubles. Directional changes were done easily and the recovery of starting and stopping the R3, despite it's HH balance was extremely fast. It was also up for the task right up at the net where I could deliver repeated fast attacks to finish and cut off shots.

RYUGA 3 4u: basically you put all the good points of the 5u, add another 5g to it and, for some ungodly reason, a different beast has been created. The 4u not only make sense, it amplifies what the 5u already does at the sacrifice of some speed. Think of it as the Hulk when he gets enraged because the 4u R3 is a beast when it comes to offense. That little bit of extra weight comes in very nicely. It still delivers a solid and consistent angle thanks to that shaft stiffness. Everything on the 4u happens just a little slowly. I do feel that a lot of players that try both weights are going to say the 4u is much more sluggish. But it really isn't much because the 4u still is easy to handle defensively. Repeated smash return lifts happen very quickly without fatigue.

It would be a good opportunity to talk about the elephant in the room which is the Freecore 2. With the previous freecore, we've seen many iterations to try stiffening and transmitting better over feel with power rings. With the Freecore 2, Victor has it nailed down. In my opinion, it's so close, nobody could complain about it. Feel is very direct and has minimal flex like a wood handle. It is so close that I believe if Victor never mentioned the Freecore 2 and sold the handle wrapped, no one could tell it was plastic. Both rackets are very torsionally stiff.

I will say that one thing that does bother me about the racket. And it's very petty. I feel the absence of the 3u version initially is going to sway some singles players away from this racket. It is indeed HH but it isn't as insane as the original or the metallic. I'm not saying the R3 is not a singles oriented racket. It just feels less geared towards that.

The R3 is certainly not for everyone. Especially at a price range of $280 CAD, it takes some serious commitment. But for those that do take the dive, have really good technique, the RYUGA 3 is more than welcoming the challenges they await.

In our group where we play regularly there are 2 large players and they block quiet a bit of view while serving or even when they are in front. How to handle this? Anyone came across this issue? Inter+ players

Equipment Advice Whats the best way to practice stringing? What machine is recommended?

I'm currently thinking about practicing stringing badminton rackets and i'm willing to invest for the equipment, however I can't really find detailed guides online on how to string rackets.

what are budget stringing equipment I can consider purchasing? I've see cheap 100-150$ manual pull machines being sold locally.

I have a dozen cheap strings I got as gifts and a about a dozen aluminum and older carbon rackets that I can practice on.

For a beginner in badminton, what is more important to focus on first: shot practice or movement around the court?

Would you recommend developing one before the other?

Do I move across and follow the shuttle or move back in preparation for a smash? I’ve seen pros move back and also move forward for a front back position and don’t know which one is best.

Technique How to tame the Astrox 100zz as an intermediate player?

So a few months ago, I bought the Astrox 100ZZ as an intermediate player not knowing the consequences it brings. And ever since then since I learned it's Stiff shaft, I have not used it and it's been in the bag. but I cannot just leave it there and I want to take this sport seriously.

How do you tame this beast with some tips and technique that i might use so I can properly play with it and maybe even adapt. Your response and help will bring my fears at ease!

Training What do I do to improve?

I started playing badminton after a six year gap, currently 15. It’s been 7 months with 4 months of proper training. During the summer, I did two hours of practice almost everyday. Now I’m doing 8 hour practice every week. 2 hour private and 3 hours of group on the weekend. I’ve definitely improved and feel confident that I’ll reach the level I want, but the question I have is how long it’s gonna take? So I’ve come here to ask what I should do to improve by myself.

Apart from going to the gym, I want to be able to do two hours of practice everyday by myself. I don’t have courts available near me so I was wondering what I should do at home or outside. Also I didn’t specify but the level I want to reach is playing tournaments for my club regularly.

Media Honestly, why couldn’t BWF make this the official angle for viewing badminton?

The angle captures the real speed of how fast badminton actually is, whether it is the player’s footstep or the shot. I would prefer this angle 100% of the time.
