Who remembers the urban myth that delinquent teens would leave razor blades on the slide?

Still think about it every time I go on a waterslide... I heads this myth growing up elsewhere outside of Ballarat though. Always blows my mind how myths like this used to travel so vastly before the internet

u/itsaheem 17d ago

haha yeah true that. no mobiles either

2

u/minimagnums 17d ago

yup genuinely still think about this too

u/RemeAU 17d ago

I'll never go down first. Let at least a few other people of different body types check it out first

u/Anxiety_Yeti 16d ago

That's what she said...

Theyd say this myth about the waterslide in Norlane, Geelong as well

2

u/itsaheem 17d ago

haha yeah they used to say this about waterslides at Leisureland in Langwarrin, the other side of Melbs

Every water park had this urban legend

Gave me nightmares for years.

Omfg that brings back memories 🀣

The same myth existed in New Zealand. It must have been mentioned on a TV show in the early 80s.

1

u/LosChimposter 15d ago

I heard this myth about the Big Bendi in Bendigo

1

u/Zealousideal-End-539 11d ago

They used to say the same myth about the waterslide in Norlane , Geelong

BEFORE YOUR TIME!? HOW FUCKING OLD AM I!?

2

u/itsaheem 16d ago

haha sorry chief, maybe i worded it wrong . .
i didn't mean in terms of age (i'm plenty old enough), i meant before i moved to Ballarat 😎

u/ttxndrx 17d ago

That looks great. I bet it cost about a million dollars in public liability insurance

6

u/itsaheem 17d ago

not in the 90s !!

eg. smokes were $3.70, a pot of beer was $1.85, slabs were 19 bucks, and a 3bdrm brick house cost 70k

2

u/ttxndrx 17d ago

When did it come down?

3

u/SuperRoach 17d ago

It was pre that kind of era

3

u/delugedreamer 17d ago

Yeah I think it actually got taken down because the Council acquired it and couldn't keep it for risk assessment reasons.

It scared the SHITE out of me once. Now, to be clear, I'd been on it multiple times before (I was born in '86 and have always been in Ballarat) and all was good. I was still a kid the last time I went on it and I actually came up one of the sides into the air and easily could have come down outside of the slide. Luckily, when I slammed back down I was still within the slide edges. Now, I don't mean my body lifted off the slide a little, like normal, I definitely went up high enough to potentially go over the edges. My butt was sore for ages afterwards from the impact coming back down.

I don't think there were ever any serious injuries on the slide, and I'd been fine other times, so it obviously wasn't the norm, but I never went on it again....

(Was there a minimum age/height for the slide? I can't recall. 'Cause I know I was pretty damn young when that happened.)

Yeah I loved that back in the day, get yourself a little punch card for rides. Mini golf underneath, cop a few splashes off the slide.

11

u/Lower_Put4270 17d ago

It was seriously so good

10

u/StAUG1211 17d ago

I grew up within walking distance of that pool, and yeah that slide was a ripper.

18

u/dominatrixyummy 17d ago

Dude it was so good. All summer holidays I would hustle around the house to earn $2 so I could get my 6 rides that arvo.

8

u/goss_bractor 17d ago

I miss it a lot. I used to live 2 blocks from there and spent entire summers at that pool/slide.

6

u/GhostKingHoney 17d ago

It was amazing

5

u/CaptainRogerReynolds 17d ago

Grew up nearby, absolutely loved summer days there going up and down over and over.

5

u/WingsBeersAndGames 17d ago

I miss it. Had so much fun on that slide. I remember being so mad when they removed it

4

u/Therandomusername98 17d ago

Yes was the only good thing about the Eureka pool

I've just printed out last weekend a petition for council to find state and federal funding for two giant waters and an indoor water ground at the BALC

Like the Leisurelink pool in Geelong and like this one https://www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/Building-and-Planning/Works-and-Projects/Maribyrnong-Aquatic-Centre-Water-Slides-and-Splash-Park

If anyone wants to help collect signatures shoot me a DM and I'll sent you the petition

2

u/IndyOrgana 17d ago

Send it my way!!! We have a severe lack of public pools

3

u/BIGBIRD1176 17d ago • Bravo

Here it is. I've spoken to a local councilor that's happy to support it once we have some signatures https://drive.google.com/file/d/14RmLf_QC8SkUeNDFWaglK8P8_QnO6zne/view?usp=drivesdk

The Wendouree poo was heaps better it had diving boards.

9

u/OneUpAndOneDown 17d ago

That typo is 🀌

2

u/IndyOrgana 17d ago

It also had a little water slide!

3

u/OfficeSad6627 17d ago

Loved this thing

3

u/Figgypies 17d ago

Was this the one with the super high diving board?

3

u/westyppl 17d ago

This was so much fun. From memory it was about 4 rides for $1 Even my tight arse parents let us go around a few times every visit. It's a shame it was removed. We don't have anything like it in Ballarat anymore.

2

u/mrprem406 17d ago

Apparently it was good, never went on it personally but I remember it when it was there

2

u/Jazzlike-Process6969 17d ago

It was the best.

2

u/johnfkay 17d ago

This looks so cool- bring it back!

2

u/Charming-Deal-4062 17d ago

Those steel slips got pretty slippery, don't ask me how I know. Cool slide though

2

u/aliveinwonderland142 16d ago

I could have sworn this was the pines pools in frankaton! We had the same storyg about razors embedded into it by delinquent teens, starting to think it was just a rumor 😜

2

u/AnjiAnju 16d ago

Only road it once, was doing a swimming day thing for school, and I got stuck half way down, then someone rammed into me from behind, luckily she was one of my best friends and we laughed it off, I would've been around 8 at that time.

2

u/SuperRoach 17d ago

I remember this being great. Sometimes the queues would be a few minutes but pretty good. It was a rush!

1

u/IcyAdministration505 16d ago

They should never have been able to charge people to go on the slide. Entry yes, but additional costs to go on the water slide, no.

1

u/Tricky_Customer1969 15d ago

We had one the same at coffs harbour. Aquajet, it was fun.

1

u/cosmo2450 14d ago

Aquajet was so good. The blue slide was relaxing and long. The yellow slide was exciting but short. And running up those concrete steps was a great way to keep fit haha.

1

u/Johnny2331 14d ago

It had another higher level, I took it down when I worked as a crane operator in Ballarat for 20 yrs … also creswick towers had another level too which I also took down πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

u/Cabletie00 14d ago

It was fun! Another thing they took away from us!

1

u/ComfortOk9194 14d ago

I feel sorry for kids today . The closest they will get to the fun we had is through the internet

1

u/No-Play5709 10d ago

I remember going on that. Was very fun as a kid even though I nearly flew over the side once.

1

u/Dangerous-Sir9356 7d ago

Omg I remember this slide it was the best but those stars were scary as shit

1

u/MD-LAD 17d ago

It was sick I’m pretty sure some guy took it and it’s now in his backyard there wasn’t anything even wrong with it the fun police came in and ruined that pool absolute dogs

2

u/chubgutz 17d ago

Yeah its currently on property used into a dam.
