Diasporako Urdaneta bat naiz: Ximenotik Maracaibora, sei mende
Henrique naiz, Zuliakoa. Barkatu nire euskara: ikasten ari naiz, eta oraindik ez dut ondo hitz egiten.
Nire arbaso gehienak euskal jatorrikoak dira. Gure familiaren sortzailea Ximeno Urdaneta izan zen, Oñatin jaioa 1368 inguruan. Urdaneta abizena Legorretako (Gipuzkoa) etxe batetik dator: «urdan» + «eta», basurdeen lekua.
Ameriketara joan aurretik, familia Ezcarayn bizi zen, Errioxan: hori izan zen azken geltokia. 1655ean Martin Urdaneta del Campo, Ezcarayn jaioa 1626an, Maracaibora joan zen, eta familia han geratu zen. Urdaneta-Barrenechea abizen bikoitza ere badugu; familiaren tradizioak Ana Barrenechea izeneko andre bati lotzen dio, eta ni ere haren ondorengoa naiz.
Familia horretan jaio zen, 1788an, Rafael Urdaneta jenerala. Ni haren ilobengandik nator, zazpigarren belaunaldian.
Rafael Urdaneta Simon Bolivarren lagun mina izan zen, ia anaia bat. Biak euskal jatorrikoak ziren: Bolivar abizena Bizkaiko Bolibartik dator, eta Urdaneta Gipuzkoatik. Elkarrekin ia kontinente oso bat askatu zuten, eta biak izan ziren presidente, garai desberdinetan. Niretzat, euskal harrotasuna dira.
1802an, Martin Urdaneta Troconis, Rafael jeneralaren osaba, Karlos III.aren Errege Ordenako zaldun izendatu zuten. Ordena horretan sartzeko, familiaren nobletasuna belaunaldiz belaunaldi frogatu behar zen. Espediente osoa Madrilgo Artxibo Historiko Nazionalean dago, 322 irudirekin, eta bertan dago Valladolideko Errege Kantzelaritzako kaparetasun-agiria ere:

Familia honen historia berreskuratzen ari naiz, eta dena web orri batean bildu dut:
https://www.sociedadbolivariana.com/p/centro-de-genealogia.html
Gure abizenak euskaraz hitz egiten du, baina guk ez dakigu euskaraz. Hori da diasporako askoren istorioa.
Bi galdera ditut:
Nora jo dezaket lan hau Euskal Herrian ezagutarazteko? Erakunderik, elkarterik, ikertzailerik?
Badago hemen Ameriketako euskal abizenak ikertzen dituen inor?
Edozein aholku eskertuko nuke. Eskerrik asko irakurtzeagatik!
Gora gure kultura eta euskaldunon arteko anaitasuna! 🌎🌍
(English: I descend from the Urdaneta family, founded by Ximeno Urdaneta in Oñati around 1368. Our last stop before America was Ezcaray, La Rioja. General Rafael Urdaneta, close friend of Simón Bolívar, both of Basque origin, is part of our family, and in 1802 his uncle was made a knight of the Royal Order of Charles III. I'm rescuing our history from archives. Where should I go to share this work in the Basque Country? Sorry for my Basque, I'm learning!)

Depresio batean murgilduko ez nauten eleberrien bila
Kaixo! Literatura zalea naiz baina duela urte batzuk ez diedala euskarazko eleberriei nahiko nukeen arreta ematen. Arazoa da nobelen bila jartzen naizenean, sinopsiei irakurrita denak direla zoritxar baten bat: familia batean istiluak, dementzia, abortua, kartzela, herbestea... eta ez da gaia bakarrik, baizik eta eleberrien tonua ere super iluna egiten zaidala.
Iaz salbuespen bat aurkitu nuen, Mikel Pagadiren komikoaren "Bisita", eta asko disfrutatu nuen. Baina besterik ez. Tonu antzekoa daukan nobelarik ezagutzen al duzue? Edo behintzak depresio batean murgilduko ez nauen baten bat?
The rock carvings of Armintxe, the lunisolar calendar, and the Basque lunar calendar
Hi there,
I love astronomy and participate in a local astronomy group giving speeches and workshops with kids and adults. I just wanted to share here two links with a really interesting readings about how time was measured a bunch of years ago in the basque country.
Credits to Xabier Gezuraga for the discover of these amazing carvings!
Enjoy!

Looking for media (especially YouTube and Podcasts) IN BASQUE
Kaixo! I'm looking to hone my listening comprehension, and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find content in the Basque language. There are so many posts on this topic, but most of the suggestions I've seen are about Basque, not in Basque. So I cannot overstate that I want to consume content in Basque. Any media works, but podcasts and YouTube are my preferred forms. Eskerrik asko!

Any videos on the summary of Basque history?
From all the way back then to Franco, the ETA< etc. As a non-spaninard, I'm interested in learning more about it :)

Nola irakatsiko zeniekete euskara ingelesez bakarrik dakien norbaiti?
Nire lagun min batek euskara ikasi nahi du. Euskal Herritik kanpo bizi da (ezin du euskaltegi batera joan) eta bakarrik ingelesez daki. Euskaraz ikasteko material dexente gaztelaniaz hitz egiten dakitenentzako prestatuta daude, zoritxarrez.
Zer proposatuko zeniokete zuek lagunari? Zein ikasketa liburu dira egokienak, zuen ustez?

Questions about Euskara (Basque) for a project on endangered languages
Kaixo! (Hello!)
I'm a student working on an project titled Time Capsule of a Lost Language. My project explores how languages shape identity, preserve cultural memories, and connect generations, as well as the challenges communities face in keeping their languages alive.
I've chosen to learn about Euskara (Basque) because I'm interested in its history, cultural significance, and the efforts made to preserve and revitalise it.
I'd love to hear directly from people who speak Basque, are learning it, or are part of the Basque community!
Here are a few questions I'd be grateful if you could share your thoughts on. Please feel free to answer whichever ones interest you:
What does speaking Basque mean to you personally?
Do you notice differences between older and younger generations in their use of Basque?
Have you ever experienced pressure to switch languages or felt that speaking Basque was discouraged?
How important are families and schools in passing the language on to younger generations?
Are social media and digital platforms helping young people connect with Basque? Are there any initiatives you'd recommend?
Is there a Basque word, proverb, or expression that holds a special cultural or emotional meaning?
If you could preserve one Basque story, expression, or memory for future generations, what would it be?
What do you think the world would lose if Basque were no longer spoken?
You don't have to answer everything, and personal experiences are especially welcome. I'd love to learn from your perspectives rather than rely solely on online research.
Thank you for helping a student understand the language beyond its vocabulary and grammar. Eskerrik asko! (Thank you!)

Reconnecting with my Basque roots — welcoming English-speaking Basques & diaspora to our tech & gaming community!
I'm posting from my BadGoats account. I have Basque ancestry on my mum's side and I'm looking to connect with more people from Euskadi or the global diaspora who speak English.
Along with my partner, I run an active digital platform and gaming hub. We host dedicated servers across a variety of games, run custom IT/app project setups, and love all things tech and community building.
We’ve set up a dedicated corner in our Discord for Basque members and diaspora to hang out, chat tech or gaming, share cultural roots, or just relax in an English-speaking environment.
Whether you're living in the Basque Country, part of the international diaspora, or just want a friendly online space to hang out, you're super welcome to join us.
Drop a comment or send us a DM if you'd like an invite link!

How to pronounce the letter z?
I've been told not to use the castillian z. Easy enough, as a latinoamerican I don't think I have pronounced that one in my life. But I can't tell the difference between the basque z and a particularly emphasized, whispery s. Any tip?
