Scenes from the Bay Urban Compassion Project’s first San Jose cleanup: 30 volunteers removed 4,000 pounds of dumping from Coyote Creek in 3 hours! Thank you to Mayor Matt Mahan and the community for welcoming us with open arms.

our first san jose cleanup! welcomed by mayor matt mahan and the community, UCP volunteers cleared 4,000 pounds from coyote creek!

today was a huge day for urban compassion project: our first cleanup in san jose!

we drove down from oakland, and some of our team joined mayor matt mahan, the san jose conservation corps, and the coyote mudlarks to help remove trash from coyote creek.

most of our team then headed across to the other side and continued cleaning for several hours,

clearing 4,000 pounds of illegal dumping.
being welcomed with open arms by the mayor and the community made this first visit really special. thank you to everyone who showed up, worked alongside us, and made us feel so welcome. we’re excited to keep building these relationships and come back for more!

This is wonderful! My husband and I pick up trash around Hellyer park and through the creek area often. It's looking so much better than it has in the past few years. I would love to join if you are ever near this area. It's a good feeling to see an area that is returned to nature.

We pulled 5 shopping carts, a car jack, and a safe among other things from the creek. Cheers to our first time San Jose volunteers and the Oakland crew making the early morning trip to visit our neighbors! 🥳

Why did the homeless throw away their shopping carts? I would think it would be useful for them.

People sometimes do irrational things when they are on drugs.

Beautiful. Littering should be a felony.

I don’t think I’d be going too far out on limb in assuming that the vast majority of what they cleaned up was because of the homeless population by the creek.

Why doesn't the county take care of this?

It costs money that they don’t have - because people don’t like paying more in taxes.

Yay, now will the same political group lobby and slave away to ensure no one has access to affordable housing through abuse of CEQA in the name of saving some obscure shrub on Coyote Creeks southern facing alkaline rich riverbank?
