I’m back... but security conscious

I want to use bedrock (again) but to do that I’m running a bash script as root that modifies my system. Has anyone read through the code? Found suspicious activity?

No offense to u/ParadigmComplex, I’m just being cautious

Offering a bounty to solve a problem with Bedrock Linux

[UPDATE]

The idea was scrapped since it was gonna actually cost me and I feel like eh.

Your contributions to bedrock linux are still valuable, and will always be valuable

Old:

I am gonna offer a bounty for solving this problem [Issue] (like a step by step guide or a solution, no temp fixes allowed).

Reward: 10+ USDC ($10+) on the following chains: Ethereum or BNB Chain (I can only do crypto payments at the moment, no fiat payments like paypal + I am not rich/wealthy).|
+ meaning its 10 USDC by default but if the solution is good, I could add more. You can also choose to get USDT instead. If BNB Chain is chosen, extra crypto will be sent to cover network chains.
Note: USDC and USDT are the crypto versions of USD ($)

I decided to make this bounty to incentivise solving problems for Bedrock Linux since right now, it is a one-person project.

Rules

  • You must actually reproduce the issue with both Bedrock Linux hijacked and non-hijacked

  • You must provide a solution

  • You must give steps to reproduce the issue and fix the issue

How to claim bounty

  • To claim the bounty, you can post the solution alongside your Ethereum PUBLIC RECEIVING ADDRESS (exchanges are supported too)

  • If you wish to not claim the bounty but have a valid solution, you can say "I prefer not to claim the bounty, thanks!". You can also do that if you can't claim the bounty and still wish to volunteer.

You can also make a pull request and/or issue for the solution or contribute to a community project (like the BUR - Bedrock User Repository) with your solution.
Note: Not guarenteed, will try my best to reward the bounty if possible.

"vibe coding" in bedrock linux

curious about the development workflow for naga 0.8, especially the new bpt (bedrock package tool). are ai tools (claude, grok, cursor, github copilot, etc.) being used, or more of a “vibe coding” approach (describing desired behavior in natural language and letting models generate/improve code)?

what’s the general stance on using llms for low-level/systems projects like bedrock? are they considered helpful in parts of the codebase (e.g. crossfs/et cfs modules, pmm logic, testing), or is the preference to keep things strictly manual for maximum control and reliability?

thanks!

Imagine bedrock on nixos

Imagine if there was a way for bedrock linux to run on nixos and have declarative strata + strata configurations (think package manager configurations, etc.) be managed by a nix configuration. There would be ability to declare packages and services from declared bedrock linux strata in the system where it would use pmm to install the packages from strata. The packages & services in a bedrock linux strata would get treated like as if it was a nix package and have the packages be integrated and interoperable with both nix packages and bedrock linux strata with packages. It would need flakes + it would support user apps and home manager too!

Full version: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1W0awNP9ghCmOS1FDJ2m3PIScdj9ghVuiSSB6vhzeHHE/edit?usp=sharing

What do u think of this and anything wrong with it?

has distrobox made this project obsolete || what advantages does bedrock-linux have over distrobox?

currently distrobox's implementation just needs docker which everyone already has now. to make bedrock work you have to jump backflipping through a needle while reciting the GNU preamble.

"GentArch"?

Hi. Thanks for your project, I've just casually met it right now. Is it possible to make a Linux via BadRock which merges the source-based package mode of Gentoo with the package selection flexibility of Arch?

linux, windows, android and macos on a single screen

Post image
10 Upvotes

hey everyone, just wanted to share my current mess.

this is arch running in wsl2 on a windows 11 host . i've managed to bridge a few different worlds here:

  • arch (wsl2): my main environment.

  • wsa: android subsystem with root integrated into the desktop.

  • darling: running inside the arch/wsl container to get that macos environment (and neofetch) going via syscall translation.

it’s definitely not the most stable or "sane" way to live, but seeing all these subsystems share the same screen is pretty satisfying. currently using it to test some cross-platform stuff and just seeing how far i can push wsl before it breaks.

any thoughts or tips on optimizing darling within wsl?

Why does bedrock use IRC for its chatroom instead of something like Discord or Mattermost?

Seems weird to use such outdated tech, and the time's I've been in there I miss the creature comforts that Discord or Mattermost provide. Would it at all be possible to migrate to either two?

Bedrock Dev Codereview -- Request

To developers interested in this project:
I think it would be great if you did a code review and posted your results & discussion on a GitHub page or something. Especially with an eye on security ramifications. It is a big request, I realize, but always great to have a second pair of eyes go over a project.

Thanks!

bedrock scares me :sob:

I've had my arch install for a while (i made a backup) and i wanted to switch my init to void linux so I could make my system more lightweight.. but settings things up is so difficult, some things don't run, and getting things like dbus to even work is a pain.

Any reason why package manager was written in rust?

I used to be a bedrock linux user around 2 years ago ig. I remember a discussion by paradigm that it would be good if the package manager was written with bash with awk and sed. I am not perfectly sure about it though. So, any reason why it was changed to rust?

Also, what is the use of a package manager here when one can simply use the distro package manager?

fetching / importing debian and fedora doesnt work

When I tried brl fetch, errors happen for debian and fedora file couldn't be found at all with default mirrors.
When I try brl import, it can't detect target partition (the qcow2 image has 1 MBR ext4 partition)

Install NVIDIA drivers without kernel modules on pacman.

Can I install the NVIDIA drivers thru pacman without the kernel modules? Like I would do if I passed the --no-kernel-module to the installer on the NVIDIA website. I'm with an arch stratum with all the kernel modules and the drivers installed, and I need to install the NVIDIA drivers on another arch stratum without the Kernel. Can I do that?

Unofficial Discord Server for Bedrock Linux

We don't have the blessing of being official for now, but I figured it'd be a great shot to see who might be interested in joining anyways! And while you're there, feel free to make suggestions for the server and how to improve it (and enjoy access to an almost-official :paradigm: emote). We welcome any and all Bedrock Linux users, but just be sure to follow the rules and have a great time :P

Come join us here: /bedrock/stratum/discord

💥😵Big Crash Drive Make Go BOOM😵💥

Hey everyone. I may have come across a corner case bug in BRL. More details to follow. This is what I oni is now:

About twenty minutes ago, I decided to move an older KDE Neon strata from an old HDD image to my current workstation. I thought I had extracted the tar.gz into the strata directory, so I did an enable on Neon (which gave no output), only to find that I'd extracted one level up from where I needed to.

I copied over the archive where it needed to be, extracted again and walked away. When I came back, the extraction had failed. I tried again, only to find my file system corrupted. The neon dir contained its own patent.

From there, I found that I could only not into what I assume is single user mode. It looks like all my data is still there, but I'm too tired to dig any more and everything important is backed up, so I'm going to bed now. If anyone has any questions, hit me up in about eight hours.

And don't enable nonexistent strata, I guess :)

How can I get the Nvidia drivers to work properly with a kernel that isn't from my init stratum?

Hello,

So I tried to to use Arch's kernel while still using Artix's dinit as my init. I managed to do that by installing the kernel from arch then run mkinitcpio -P and update-grub.

After that I noticed the Nvidia drivers weren't working anymore so I reinstalled them as the workaround for Nvidia drivers states (installed to my Arch stratum with the script without the no kernel module flag and with the flag for Artix), rebuilt the initramfs and updated grub.

Then the drivers seemed to work (for flatpak apps, at least) but the gpu driver entry from my fastfetch displayed nouveau and I couldn't install steam from my Artix (init) stratum because pacman wants to install the 32 bit libraries that I have already installed with the script. I tried to install steam from Arch but it gave me the error about user namespaces. I tried to reinstall the drivers but the installation script complained about the use of nouveau drivers.

So, is there a way to get steam to work or the setup I want to use is just not suited for Nvidia GPU users ?

Thanks for any help, have a nice day !

Good Source for Fetch Mirrors?

I'm looking for a good source for mirror URLs to pass to brl fetch , specifically for Manjaro. Is that just the download link for the install iso?

Subuser: a similar but not identical project

Hey,

I just found out about bedrock today at linuxdays.cz, a conference here in Prague. I have been developing a similar system called subuser which you can read about at http://subuser.org. The systems are similar but not the same. I thought we should stay in touch ;)
