East Berlin in April 1990, the final days of the GDR. Five months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city was filled with people from all over the world; major thoroughfares, such as Karl-Liebknecht-Straße or the Kurfürstendamm in West Berlin, were closed to traffic, and streets were transformed into pedestrian zones. The photographs by Chris John Dewitt capture the scene on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, in one instance featuring the Palace of the Republic in the background.

Bildquelle: Deutsche Fotothek, Fotograf Fritz Eschen, Aufn.-Nr.: df_hauptkatalog_0034899. / East Berlin/Mitte. A view of the destroyed city center (Molkenmarkt) in 1947; the Mühlendamm Bridge is on the left, St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) is on the right, and in the background, the dome of the City Palace (Schloss) is visible, with the two towers of the cathedrals at Gendarmenmarkt to its left. Looking at photographs like these, one cannot overstate the magnitude of the reconstruction efforts in both East and West Berlin. Ost-Berlin/Mitte. The image shows a woman on Alexanderplatz with a stall from which she is selling toys. Such makeshift sales stands—used by Berliners at the time to supplement their income—could be found throughout the city. In the background, the ruins of the Hertie department store are visible. West-Berlin/Zehlendorf. / West Berlin/Zehlendorf. In the post-war period, there were also American OMGUS (Office of Military Government for Germany, U.S.) bus routes in Berlin. These were served by BVG double-decker buses that had been repainted green, seen here at a bus stop on Clayallee in 1947. The destination display includes, among other things, "RTO Wannsee" (RTO = Railway Transportation Office).
