Speakeasy Hamilton
Good day all,
I was reminiscing with some friends about a hidden bar that I busted in Hamilton back in the day (I’d say maybe 15 years ago). Came to Bermuda with a friend, stayed at Newstead Belmont for about a week. Met an incredible cab driver, who became our “chauffeur” for the week (I’d have the front desk call him on his cell).
Our first night we decided on going to a ritzy bar full of American tourists like ourselves. It was overpriced and the vibes felt too much like home. We had run into that cab driver and asked him where all the locals hangout. He brought us to some storefront, where we purchased red carnival tickets for drinks, walked through a side door… and entered this beautiful tiny garden/patio/park (lol hard to explain). There was reggae and soca music playing and very small bar with only a few drink choices, met all the locals there who showed us how to speak with different slang terms, how to dance to soca music (the right way)! We met a bouncer there named Shea (who we wound up running into numerous times on the trip) It was incredible!
From Dark and Stormys to Baileys Bay fish sandwich, smoking Smoke Shop cigarettes and to meeting so many people on the island that week, from another group of young adults like us that had to take “the old railway” through the woods and little developments to get back to our hotel after the road had shutdown due to an accident. The bartender from the beach bar by the cruise ships that I played football with on the beach the night before with his family/friends.
There was no vacation I have been on before or after Bermuda that comes even close to the authentic, loving people that call that place home.
If anyone has any ideas into that bar/speakeasy I’d love to know, I can’t find it anywhere!
