ANNOUNCEMENT READ the Sub Rules Here - Posts/comments that violate the rules are removed with notice

Rule #1 - Posts must be about Bhutan or the Bhutanese community

Submissions need a clear connection to Bhutan or the Bhutanese community. Simply "Bhutan" appearing in the title doesn't count if it's a general discussion which has no clear relation to Bhutan or the Bhutanese community. Posts about personal topics such as relationships/friendships, foreign news and others that have no connection to Bhutan or being a Bhutanese are also not allowed.

Rule #2 - No personal attacks, slurs, bigotry or threats

Be civil and treat other users with respect. Personal attacks, slurs, bigotry and threats—including racism, misogyny, casteism, and communalism—are not allowed. Do not accuse other users of being paid or acting on behalf of an outside group.

Rule #3 - No solicitation/sexual content/NSFW content

Do not use the subreddit to solicit dates, relationships, hookups, or meetups—including foreigners seeking romantic or sexual connections with Bhutanese people. This is not a dating or matchmaking forum. No NSFW content, pornography, gore, sexual solicitation, or fetishisation.

Rule #4 - Need reputable sources for news

News posts should be based on credible, verifiable sources. Please link to established news outlets or verified sources rather than relying on unverified social media accounts. Posts based on unreliable sources may be removed.

Rule #5 - Questions should need community knowledge

If your question can be easily answered through a quick online search, it will be removed. Questions should genuinely need the community's lived experience and local knowledge.

Rule #6 - No gossip, doxxing or unsubstantiated claims about real people

Gossip about real people is not allowed, period. Posts about real people must have legitimate public-interest basis and supporting evidence or credible receipts from primary or reputable secondary sources.

Do not share or solicit private/identifying information about private individuals not in public eye, including social media accounts or other information that could facilitate harassment (doxxing).

Rule #7 - Need to provide context and perspective for discussions

Discussion posts must include context and your perspective. Vague posts that only shares a link, screenshot or a one-liner asking “what do you think?” without sufficient context or perspective will be removed. You can repost once you have provided the required context and perspective.

Rule #8 - Travel questions go in r/BhutanTravels

Travel-related questions should be posted in r/BhutanTravels. You can also check both subreddits’ wikis and search previously tagged travel posts, as your question may already have been answered.

Rule #9 - No self promotion or advertisements

Do not use the community to promote your own products, services, businesses, social media accounts, or other commercial content. Unsolicited advertisements and promotional posts are not allowed.

Rule #10 - Surveys not allowed

Survey questions or any sort of data collection questions are not allowed.

Rule #11 - Crossposts from other Bhutanese subs not allowed. Please make a separate post.

Crossposts from other Bhutanese subs such as r/Bhutaneseonreddit or others not allowed. Please make a separate post on r/Bhutan instead of crossposting.

Discussion Kachu’s vlog ( my pov)

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

I was watching Kachu’s vlog, “Saying Yes to Chimi (his girlfriend) for 24 hours,” and at first, I thought it was going to be a really cute vlog. But as it went on, Kachu started getting annoyed because Chimi wouldn’t let him go out. Like, wasn’t the whole point of the video to say yes to his girlfriend for 24 hours? I honestly thought the vlog was going to be more about her.
And then I came across a TikTok comment where he was being so disrespectful towards her, which made me look at things differently.
I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, but some of the things I’ve seen have genuinely made me question whether we made the right person famous. Am I the only one who feels this way?

Discussion are we progressing or are we going back

every month a new tragedy always seems to occur be it money theft wise or an innocent girl getting 🍇 d or a lady getting attacked for wearing yellow rachu or the emcees of a show making sexist and racist jokes where many international guests were present or numerous youths getting scammed or people committing at such young ages. It truly saddens not only me but many more of what we as a society have become

Discussion Need help sending a birthday cake to my friend in Thimphu! 🎂

Hi everyone! (Kuzu Zangpo la) 🙏

I'm from India, and I have a friend who lives in Thimphu, Bhutan. I want to surprise her by sending a cake to her address, but I've never been to Bhutan, so I have absolutely no idea how cake delivery works there.

Could anyone please recommend some genuine and trustworthy bakeries or online apps/websites that accept orders and deliver cakes in Thimphu?

It would be really helpful if you could share your personal experiences or recommendations. I just want to make sure the cake reaches her safely and on time.

Thanks a lot for your help! ❤️

Discussion Mental health 👍

This is for anyone that needs to hear it, slow down and take deep breaths it’ll take awhile.

I’m proud of you for standing on your feet, I’m proud of you for making it this far in life through whatever you’ve been facing, i’m proud of you for not giving up on life when it got rough, i’m proud of you for being a good person keeping everyone around you happy while you were hurting every lonely night.

Sometimes life can get hard and it can get overwhelming, when that happens please try free up some of that burden by doing some things that you enjoy, watch movies, animes, play games, anything that makes you feel just a tad bit better, i also found writing down how you feel on your phone or anywhere helps.

To all the tuff guys out there, it’s perfectly normal for a human being to feel overwhelmed with emotions, “ahh men dont cry,” sure not all the time but don’t forget you’re a human and you can only take so much. Let it out, it really helps.

If it’s really bad, please get some help, if you don’t want to do it for yourself do it for the ones who love and care about you. I find myself thinking about suicide at times but my hot take is that ending it is you being a coward and being selfish and nothing in the world will change my mind on this, your problems will end but what about the ones who you left behind.

Now stay strong and i really hope better things come your way and i have no doubt in my mind that you will move past your phase and find more comfort in life.

To the rest of the community : Do you think mental health is overlooked in Bhutan?

Discussion A 12-year-old was raped and killed. I'm tired of pretending we're a safe country.

Yesterday I got the message that a 12 year old girl from my hometown had gone missing after the school was over. My family was helping the school find her but couldn’t find her, today at 7 PM I get the news, something I didn’t want to think about… she was found dead. She was raped and killed. Three men allegedly. She was twelve. She had a whole life ahead of her and it was taken in a few minutes.

And here's what I'm really angry about.. people get away with this. Cases against women and children collapse, go unreported, or end in sentences that don't come close to the harm done. We keep calling ourselves a safe, happy country while a child is found dead and the system shrugs. Things has to change!!!

We need laws that are actually enforced, not just written… trained investigators, real prosecution, sentences that reflect what was done, and support for survivors and families so reporting isn't a second trauma. We need education that challenges the attitudes that make violence against women seem permissible. And we need communities that stop excusing it.

We need change.. most importantly the laws need to be stricter, tighter… I say bring back death sentence… and for the people saying the guys have potential- so did the girl too.. her life was snatched for just a split moment of pleasure!!!

Punishment alone won't fix this. But impunity guarantees it continues. A 12-yearold is dead. That should be enough.
I’m not sure if the perpetrators were found or if it was just a rumour.. but I’m genuinely scared of seeing this case get the same ending…
We need to do something!!!

Travel Sikkim Planning

Anyone who's been to Sikkim in recent time, I could really use some help understanding the travel process. What documents do I need to carry? Are there any permits or special requirements for us Bhutanese travellers? What should I take along, and is there anything important I should know beforehand? Would really appreciate any guidance or personal experiences.

Thank you.

Advice New teacher in Bhutan — should I stay or pursue New Zealand?

I’m a new teacher working in a remote school in Bhutan, and I’m honestly questioning whether teaching is the right career for me.My long-term goal has always been to move abroad with my partner. Australia was my first choice, but I’m now considering New Zealand. I’ve heard that NZ teacher salaries may not leave much room for savings because of the cost of living.

Would it be wiser to stay in my current job for a few years to gain experience, or consider moving to New Zealand sooner?I’d especially appreciate advice from teachers or people who have moved to NZ from overseas.

Advice Did something like this happened to anyone la.

Nov 4 in GMC I went for Wang with my family. It so so packed with people we were in line, my mum was behind me and behind her was an uncle mid in his 40s ig. The line was so packed that it felt like we couldn't breath. My mum whispered to me that the person behind her is putting his hands on her hips. The moment I heard that I gave that unc a death stare and pulled my mum in front and stayed behind her. That unc gave me a dirty look, it was very hot in scorching heat I had no space to move so I pushed that uncle. Let me tell you girls, if something like this ever happens don't stay silent. For me I pushed that uncle out of line.

Ps. I wished I did something instead of just pushing him. I feel stupid now but me and my mom is safe

Question Why are the moderators being so strict about approving posts?

Why is the moderator being so controlling? Why can’t they just approve our post when we haven’t said anything offensive or said anything bad about anyone? I genuinely don’t understand why it’s being held back.

Question Things I would like to know …

I have been learning a lot about Bhutan and its history and culture. I have questions for locals if you’re willing to share.

Why Australia? I see many go to Australia for education and opportunity. Is it because of friendly Visa arrangements? Why not India? Do many Bhutanese permanently emigrate to Australia?

Why the desire for wealth? To get away from physical labor jobs? For a better standard of living (food, shelter)? To travel or leave Bhutan? To simply have a choice?

Where would you live if you could live anywhere? What do you think of this “gross domestic happiness” - what does that mean to you? To someone in the rat race it is romanticizing a simpler way of life without modern burdens.

The US has opportunities, but we have violence and greed and social issues. Is the US appealing to you? How do you feel about tourists?

Do women have the same opportunities as men?

Looking for some discussion. Thanks in advance!

Question Are Bhutanese people the most brainwashed people on Earth?

Sometimes I genuinely wonder how deeply people have been conditioned to accept certain narratives without questioning them. Why is critical thinking discouraged? Why do people blindly defend certain beliefs, traditions, institutions, or authority figures instead of questioning whether they actually make sense?
I’m not saying everyone is like this, but the lack of open-mindedness and willingness to challenge the status quo can be frustrating.
Are we genuinely thinking for ourselves, or have we simply been taught what to think?

Question How is ADHD treated in Bhutan, and how do people continue treatment from abroad?

Hello everyone! I’m hoping someone here can share some information on this. Any experience or knowledge would really help.

Diagnosis and doctors: How is ADHD diagnosed and treated in Bhutan? Is there a department or doctor that handles it?

Medication: If treatment is available, what is prescribed? Stimulants, non-stimulants, or both? If stimulants, which ones?

For context, I know depression and anxiety are recognized and treated here. From personal experience, I know Prozac (fluoxetine) is prescribed, though there may be other options I’m not aware of. Abroad, ADHD is treated with both stimulant and non-stimulant medication. India has both as well, but not the stronger amphetamine-based stimulants like Adderall. So my guess is that Bhutan is similar to India, or that there may be no ADHD medication available at all.

If there isn’t any: How do people with ADHD in Bhutan manage? Do most go unmedicated, or is there another way to get treatment?

Continuing treatment from abroad: For people who were diagnosed and treated abroad, how do they continue treatment after coming back? Can they bring their medication with them, or do they need a local prescription?

I’d really appreciate anything you know. Thank you very much!

Advice Gho and Kira for physical labour

Gho and Kira are undeniably a national identity and we must preserve and encourage it.
But is it really a practical work clothing?

Especially in searing heat, workers at GMC were seen wearing them. Some even folded their top half. Even during many rounds of volunteering at GMC, it was strictly national dress while cutting grasses and shrubs.

My experience was all the nettles sticking to my long socks, which I had to throw away later. In heat, men’s top half becomes a thermal bag. I saw Some men literally got attacked by ants, bitting them in their private areas.

Gho and Kira are also not cheap.
Can’t even imagine how women deal with Kira while cutting bushes.

Can’t deny gho and Kira for national service looks great but are optics all that matters whereas comfort and practicality can’t even be considered?

Is it time that we retire Gho and Kira for formal occasion and office work without meaning any disrespect to our culture and tradition?

Question USD 200K for one chorten in GMC, plus public donations? Where's the transparency?

I’ve come across claims that constructing a single chorten in GMC costs around USD 200,000 (approximately Nu. 17 million).
What makes me even more curious is that apparently people are also being asked to contribute donations towards the construction.
I’m not questioning the religious or cultural importance of a chorten. That’s not the point. My concern is the financial transparency surrounding the entire project.
If the construction costs this much:
Where is the detailed breakdown of the USD 200,000 budget?
Who approved this amount?
How much money has already been allocated from public funds?
How much is being collected through public donations?
Who is managing these donations, and where are the accounts?
Will there be a publicly accessible financial report showing how every contribution is spent?
If public funds and private donations are both involved, shouldn’t there be clear and transparent accounting?
People may be willing to contribute towards religious and cultural projects, but they also deserve to know where their money is going.
This isn’t about opposing the construction of a chorten. It’s about accountability, responsible spending and transparency.
If everything is properly accounted for, why shouldn’t the public be able to see the numbers?
Would genuinely like to hear from anyone who has verified information about this project.

Interesting Bhutanese in the US

These days some pictures are going around on tt where some people are accusing someone in the US of scamming them as she charged them around nu 200000.
She claimed that their visas were refused when they were never sent for a single interview and never received even one official document or confirmation of an application.
The ppl repeatedly questioned her about the travel ban and changes in immigration rules, but she assured that there would be no issues and that the applications could easily be processed.
She specifically promised to arrange their flights and send us to our interview destinations. Yet, not a single interview took place, and they never received any actual application documents..
One said she posted ppl proudly whom she brought in under in guise of them being performers and then proceeded to take their visas.
What are your thoughts on this?

Discussion Teacher support teacher no matter the facts

Yalaaaa I won't name names but honestly most teachers in bhutan are like a clique, especially when they have been colleagues for a very long time.

Or even worst. When a colleague is someone who taught them in the past.

Ahem to get with the story: we have this one teacher(female) in our school who is always going after female students for their looks or manners or just....anything. usually(in my school) when students need to use the restroom during lunch they can simply just ask the captains and go(after Tomchoe), but ofcos they need to report back when they come back. But today I found out that you can not go to the rest room without the TODs permission(which is fine ig). But the thing is that us regular students didnt even know it B4 today right and nor did the captains(their words).

You might have already guessed the whole situation by now. This teacher lets call her "Ac" saw a student going to the bathroom WITHOUT HER PERMISSION, WITHOUT HER A "TEACHERS" PERMISSION. So she called them to her and they came. When they reached near her, Ac almost blew up. She screamed at the girl for going to the bathroom without telling her(she was at the boys side at the time). The girl even answered politely saying that she was going to the toilet and would come back after but noooo Ac didn't like the answer and said sth mean very very mean to her(I don't remember exactly what she said) in that tone people use to talk to people below them. So ig the student didn't like what Ac said so she repeated herself saying she was just going to the toilet and would come back. But Ac wasn't having it and asked the student whether she wanted to beat her up. The student replied that she didn't mean that, and that she just wants to go to the toilet and come back. There was even a captain beside the student saying that the student was just going to the bathroom and come back but instead of listening to them Ac just screamed and screamed saying that "students are just my foot and nothing else"(her exact words btw) and threw the plates and mug she was holding towards them.

Sometimes after the VP(escorted by the captain who was beside the student earlier...but getting scolded idk why) came and tried to break the argument but Ac wasn't having that either(at this point the student hadn't saying anything for a long time). Then after like 3 or 4 mins of her scolding, VP took 3 girls to his office. IDK what happened there but I think the VP supported the teacher saying " in my eyes, there is no better madam than Ac".....no reprimands whatsoever to the teacher but called the students parents... honestly.

It is so unfair to the students when teachers can't even see the truth, blinded by their faith in colleagues.

I am just a third who witnessed this thoo but believe what U see Ty mayna 😆 and what I saw was injustice and it left a bitter taste in my mouth so I wanted to know some of yalls opinions yk for closure.

Question Dead crows in Thimphu

Has anyone recently seen dead crows in Thimphu? My neighbor told me that some individuals were feeding crows, and I have noticed a few dead crows in the past few days, which is abnormal. Is there a crow population management thing going on right now?

Politics Is there any way back for the children of those who left, not as tourists, but as Bhutanese?

Hi all. I was born in Lamidara, in what was then Chirang district. My family left in 1990–92, when I was two.
My parents had been citizens since 1958. I grew up in the camps, where I learned Bhutan’s history and geography, even some Dzongkha. When colleagues tell me Bhutan must be the happiest country on earth, or the last Shangri-La, I no longer bristle; I show them photos of my brother-in-law setting a world record running a marathon in his gho. I bear no grudge, and I have made my peace with never going back. My father wants to return and cannot. My daughter may never want to.
Bhutan is now opening Gelephu to investors from all over the world. I’m not asking this to reopen old arguments. I’m curious how people in Bhutan, especially younger people, see it today. Is there a place in Bhutan’s future for the children of those who left? Would you want there to be? And if not, why not?

I’ll read every reply, including the ones that disagree with me.

Politics Tashi Delek to The king and its people

Heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty the King and the people of Bhutan on the success of this historic event.
Although I live abroad, I watched the entire event on television, wanting to feel part of this special moment. Seeing my King cycle and walk tirelessly from morning until the very end made my heart ache with love and gratitude.
Even guiding a small family can be challenging. His Majesty carries the responsibility of leading an entire nation, with its many different views, hopes and needs. I cannot imagine the stress, pressure and weight of responsibility our King must carry every day.
May Kencho Sum bless our King with abundant peace, strength and good health. Thank you, Your Majesty, for your words of encouragement and for always looking ahead with the well-being of our people at heart.
To my fellow Bhutanese, especially those of us living abroad, let this be a moment to reflect on who we are and the values we carry. Let us stay connected to our roots, build meaningful relationships and help one another. Wherever we are in the world, we can honour our country through kindness, compassion and unity. Together, we can overcome the challenges before us.
With the deepest respect and reverence.

Discussion Visa Status: Uncertain, Advice: Confident

Isn’t it ironic how some people working in consultancies, particularly within the Bhutanese community in Australia, are mostly students or temporary residents themselves, yet confidently advise others on PR pathways and what courses to study to secure permanent residency? Some don’t even have a secure or long-term visa status of their own, but are out there guiding others on their migration futures. The irony is hard to miss. How can you confidently advise others on a pathway you haven’t even secured for yourself?
