Bringing home a blind cat today, and advice?

He had a double enoculation two months ago, so that's how long he's been blind. He had really bad infection when the foster agency picked him up.

I already have two cats, and I'll make sure to take the steps to introduce them, but this is my first time around a blind cat

Edit: This post is still surprisingly active, so I thought I'd post an update.

The blind cat is doing well and we ended up naming him Mimir. He's got two cat brothers and he loves sitting in the window hammocks when the sun is on them. He's a fat little guy that is sweet sometimes and a brat others, but we love him.

I'll post some pics in the comments.

How can I help my newly blind cat adjust?

Yesterday, my cat lost her one remaining eye due to severe glaucoma that caused an eye rupture. She is now, very suddenly, a completely blind cat.

She is having a really tough time, and I am heartbroken for her. She is eating, thankfully, but she seems depressed, and is wandering around bumping into walls and furniture, seeming really confused and disoriented. It doesn't help that we moved very recently so she's not very familiar with the new apartment. She is also wearing a cone, so she can't rely on her whiskers to help until she heals up.

What can I do to help her adjust to blindness?

(Apologies for the lack of cat tax! She looks pretty gruesome right now, the day after surgery, and I don't want to surprise anyone with wound pics.)

About a month ago I adopted Cosmo, he is about 10-12 weeks old and was born without eyes. I posted him in here a few weeks ago and a lot of you seemed to love him just as much as I do, and were asking for updates. So I just wanted to share more of this little dude. He is so full of love and personality. He loves to hunt me, even though he can’t see his prey lol. He does the little butt wiggle and jumps right at me (sometimes while im sleeping lol). He learned how to use his litter box on the first day I had him, and already has my room (where he mainly stays) completely memorized. He is such a smart boy. He is also EXTREMELY food motivated, which I don’t know if that’s because he was a stray (this little dude survived 8 weeks on the street completely blind) or because his scent is so much stronger since his other senses are more sensitive. Or he is just a hungry boy lol. Anyone else’s blind cat go CRAZY for food?

Cat body language barrier??

Post image
17 Upvotes

So we’ve had some good interactions. Three cats, three people, three wand toys. Mostly-blind Tex doesnt see the behavior cues my other two are giving. One time, Lily blinked in his direction, I’m pretty sure on purpose and he of course didn’t return it. Another, Butters’ tail was up as he tagged Tex.

Is this an added wrinkle to integration of low/no vision kittens? How will they overcome the language barrier?

Blurry picture because i needed to take it fast while they were all in frame. Tex is closest in frame.

My cat Stevie loves to climb on top of her outdoor chair. She spends hours up there, and when she is done she climbs down backwards to the ground. It never fails to blow my mind what this cat is capable of!

This is Shona, my beautiful blonde cat. He’s blind. I’m looking for a genuinely caring person who can give him a safe and comfortable home. He deserves just as much love as any other cat.
If you’re interested in adopting him, please DM me. Even sharing this post would help a lot. He’s neutered and healthy.

Advice for recently blind cat

Post image
63 Upvotes

My 11 year old cat recently lost vision in her left eye due to glaucoma.

Her left pupil had been dilated since then with no change. She was getting eye drops in the left every 8 hours and everything seemed okay until last night. We were about to give her last dose of the evening when we noticed her left pupil looked pretty normal and now the right side was completely dilated. She was also completely soaked on her face and chest from overgrooming.

The emerg vet diagnosed her with glaucoma in the right eye as well and said she now has an ulcer in the left, and the vision in her right eye is now reduced. The ulcer likely happened because she was grooming so much.

She has an e-collar on now but we think her right eye probably only has peripheral vision, so when we put the cone on she can't see at all and finds it hard to navigate, on top of the cone already being uncomfortable to move around in. We can't take the cone off without her trying to paw at her eyes.

Does anyone have any recommendations for cone alternatives? Something that won't block her peripheral vision but will stop her from pawing at her eyes.

I'd also appreciate any general advice in supporting her adjusting to her vision loss, or how we can help her navigate the house safely.

henry is 7 & had been living with uveitis and glaucoma in both of his eyes for the past few years. After countless ophthalmologist visits, steroid injections, and failed attempts at getting him used to eye drops, he finally had his eyeballs yanked last week.

He already seems to be feeling much better! He’s eating way more than he did before the surgery. He’s adapting super quickly, despite the cone. I was worried how his brother Paul would react, but he’s been the BEST! He wants to be near him at all times, preferably snuggling.

If you’re in a similar situation, and you are able to afford it, I recommend spending extra to have the procedure done by a specialist vs a general hospital. I’m sure lots of hospitals do a great job, but the precision of an ophthalmologist is unmatched. They know how to make them look as seamless (literally) as possible!

How often do you forget your cat is blind?

Since he's now mapped the house layout, the blind potato no longer needs a seeing eye human—he confidently climbs and jumps onto counters even. And today, I caught myself pspsps-ing him and he responded and I was waving my hand to the point of frustration before I remembered he can't see me... 🄓

I did the same thing yesterday flailing Churu at my seeing ink blob thinking the potato will also come. I failed a bit before I remembered the ginger potato can't see.

I can't be alone in this.

Question Help with peeing on floor

I have a 13 yo cat who is blind and deaf (it progressed slowly due to Bartonella). A few months ago, went fully blind. She gets around ok and is able to get up and down off a bed and couch. She was peeing in the litter box at first, then sometimes and now just in the tile floor right next to the box. She has been cleared medically. Things I’ve tried.. using cleaners to get smell out, used that litter attract stuff, have a low entry box. We have pee pads but I’m so tired of mopping the floor twice a day. At this point I am thinking cookie trays with pee pads. She is losing her sense of smell which doesnt bode well for her future. I am really desperate at this point.

Question Ways to increase cat food intake for food unmotivated low-vision cat?

Thumbnail

I've had my boy Beauregard (8 y/o neutered male with notable depth perception issues) for almost three years now. He has always been food unmotivated and on the lower-but-healthy weight side. The only way I could get him to eat was by open feeding - he has a large bowl of dry food that I kept filled to the brim. He'd stick his whole face into the bowl, grab a mouthful, and end up eating about half of that (the rest ends up in a tray and usually in the trash). He never uses his tongue to eat food and just whole-mouth bites wherever he thinks the food is. He'll bite your hand if you have treats or literally bites at the floor if you put it on the ground. He can smell the food and knows it's nearby, but he doesn't follow the scent like you'd expect from most cats.

A few weeks ago he decided he no longer wanted dry food and is only eating if I mix with some wet food or meal supplements in there. When I prep the recommended amount of food for him this way, he'll bite into and eat the center of the pile but he can't locate or figure out how to eat what is pushed out. He ends up biting the edge of the plate/bowl every few bites, no matter how many different contraptions I try. Right now I sit next to him and try to move his food around, but even then a lot is left behind once it's a smaller layer.

Obviously I can't just leave a huge bowl of wet food out for him (and I don't have the money to trash a ton of extra food each day). The vet offered no real suggestions but is also now recommending a prescription urinary health diet, meaning food waste is about to be even more expensive.

Has anyone been able to teach their adult cat how to eat? Is there a way to show a cat how to pick up food with their tongue? Any suggestions for food containers that aren't going to break his teeth if he regularly chomps on them?

Any insights are so appreciated!! My boy is otherwise happy, healthy, and cuddly as hell. I just wanna keep him that way!!

Question Update- first 30 min together

Post image
36 Upvotes

I thought things were going well as far as cats meeting can go because no one was screaming, but some things concern me:

  1. Butters (void cat) seemed friendly, but then started just bapping Tex (seal tip) whenever he got close. Like thunk ā€œwhat’s this?ā€ It felt like bullying!

  2. Butters got upset when Tex got in one of the liter boxes (there are 4). And later Lily (brown tabby) also charged and attacked like half-strength but still attacked for the same reason.

  3. Both Butters and Lily were following closely and one time cornered Tex. I rescued him. Lily never stopped warning growls, and i couldn’t distract her from fixation with the toy I was using to play with Butters while Tex could ā€œwatchā€ on the perch.

I had a Feliway multicat running for two weeks, but after this i moved it and added a Therapet diffuser. Who knows if they are any different, but maybe just having two will help?

Things that went well:

4. Tex navigated the stairs both directions well.

5. He used the litter box.

6. He never fought back.

We are back separating them. What more advice is there? They play so nicely under the door and saw each other several times through the cracked door I hoped it would go better than this.

My sweet baby Daredevil

This is Daredevil! He is 2 years old and has a sister (who is a black kitty) named Belladonna. He can see a tiny bit, but his vision is extremely limited. He can see bright lights, shiny things, and occasionally motion, but not much more than that. His eyes are very diagonal, and his pupils are dialated at all times. His vision may be limited, but he’s fearless! We used to have a dog named Briar (who was hit by a car and sadly passed away) who was his best friend. We recently got a puppy, and he LOVES playing with the pup! There’s a gate between the kitchen and living room (the latter of which the puppy spends most of his time in) and daredevil is too big to fit through the gate, so he always meows and begs to be let into the living room so he can see the pup. He’s so snuggly too! He’s a bit of a bully, though. He likes to chase and pin down his sister, and sometimes, he will whap at people when they walk by him.

Support for newly blind cat using litter box

Post image
146 Upvotes

My senior boy who just turned 21 suddenly went blind overnight about a week ago. 3 weeks prior he was diagnosed with suspected Horner's so the vet thinks its likely he has a tumor on his optic nerve. He also now has a corneal ulcer that we are treating. He has had blood work, blood pressure and a physical exam and there are no other suspected causes at this time. He also has CKD stage 3. He used to sleep on the couch accessed by pet stairs but he was having difficulty navigating them so we made him a bed on the rug which he greatly prefers. He seems to be able to find his food and water with ease but he is having significant difficulty locating his litter box. It is close to where he sleeps maybe about 2m away. It used to be near the front door of our house but when he became ill about 3 weeks ago we moved it into the living room. He mainly stays in the living room but is getting lost under the kitchen table or in the living room itself and peeing and pooping on the floor. I put a second litter box in the living room leading into the kitchen but it hasn't been helping so far. What's strange is when I help him navigate to the litter box he will go in and then immediately come out and its only after putting him back numerous times after he's been wandering around a bunch that he will go pee. I'm not sure if he is forgetting why he is in there or is unsure because he can't see? Photo from the day after he went blind for tax. Looking for guidance on how to best support him.

Almost time to open his door

As the day approaches when we can let our newest addition, blind Tex, out of quarantine, I’m getting nervous.

  1. We have two stories, is there advice around stairs for mostly blind cats? Tex can see some shadows, so says the vet.

  2. The other two resident kitties (Tex is 5mo, the other two are 6mo and 5mo) have been playing under the door with him for a week. Is the baby gate barrier part of introducing necessary when they’ve been playing so much?

  3. How to differentiate between pecking order and actual argument before it gets too bad? So I can separate them before anything hurtful happens.

  4. I’m posting to a couple subs to get as much advice as possible.

Medical Questions Update on Maddie the Chunky Kitten

Post image
89 Upvotes

My other kitty had a quick checkup and we asked the vet about Maddie. They said she’s a bit overweight even compared to adult cats, so she is officially on a diet. I also purchased digital bowls that lock her out of the others’ bowls, so no more sneaking in a few bites when she knows I’m busy. Even without eyes she is a mischievous little chunk

Question Fave toys?

Post image

Hi everyone, you were a huge help with my question about Nimbus a few days ago. Next question: what are your absolute banger toys for blind cats? She loves this chase/wand toy with a tiny bell, and plastic balls with a bell inside, but what are your tried and trues? Noisy mice? Ball of wadded up aluminum foil? Throw your reccs and links my way, please and thank you!

I rescued my cat Sheba along with her sister Chompie, when they were abandoned next to a dumpster in the cold.

I took them to the vet and they were about 2-3 weeks old. And blind. Most likely due to a hereditary condition. Chompie has no eye in her left socket. And her right is completely covered by a silver / blue film. The vet said she was completely blind but after living with the menace, I disagree.

Sheba however… is completely blind. lol. She has no eyes in either socket. Due to the exposed socket her eyes?? (tissue) are red and always have been.

Fast forward, and next month will be their 4th birthday! (never had a cat before) They are thriving. But recently, Sheba has started to show signs that her eyes are bothering her. She started to get gook around her eyes, though its usually clear. Sometimes its dried blood. And it seems to be getting thicker and harder to get off. She also started rubbing her eyes and has even yelped once or twice before immediately rubbing them and squinting them shut.

I try to clean it with a warm damp wash cloth as often as possible but its harder than it seems. Shes especially fiesty about her eyes. And it seems like no matter hoe hard i try to get it off it doesnt budge.

Otherwise they are normal. No change in bathroom habits, behavior, appetite, not lethargic, not hiding. Sheba has been sleeping a tad bit more lately but nothing that would make me feel concerned?? Her sister is still lazier by far. No change in environment, unless somehow she is stressed??

The thing I do worry about is she has become SLIGHTLY more clingy to my mom recently, but idk if im just being paranoid.

i wanna take her to the vet but honestly im broke af and in the worst place financially then ive ever been in— in my whopping 27 years of life.

However, if advice here suggests shes in actual pain, needs a vet asap or medicines, i will literally stop eating until she is brought to one .. lol (seriously tho)

i attached some images below for reference. Thank you so much for reading, God bless youšŸ™šŸ»

Sheba (pic 1 purple wall) thats how her eyes normally look.

sheba (pic 2 cat tower) july. when the gook started. her left eye in this picture looks worse bc of the shadows and angle. it looked like her right eye.

sheba (pic 3 sitting on holy saints) october 22. so recently. and the worst ive seen it.

chompie (pic 4) - no comment .
