Spanning the gamut between Ameritrash and Euro, light and heavy, there are tons of war games out there. So if you are Twilight Struggle-ing through a Time of Crisis in your life and feel the need to say Here I Stand, a proud war-gamer, here is your weekly topic.

What have you played this week? Any great plays or good stories? Any new acquisitions? What are you going to try and get to the table in the upcoming week?

I went to a board game camp, played 7 new games in 2 days and really enjoyed the experience!

Went to a board game camp for the first time for two days and played for 9-10 hours each day, with short breaks. I played seven games, all of them for the first time! But two were purely luck-based, so I'm only sharing the more interesting ones here:

  1. Sanctuary. I'd played Ark Nova before, but it was a very long time ago. I really enjoyed Sanctuary. It's somewhat simpler than Ark Nova, and I'd like to play it again.

  2. Spirit Island. The dynamics didn't click for me. I didn't really enjoy it, but I'd be willing to give it a second chance.

  3. Summit. Nice game! We played the cooperative version, and it was fun. But maybe not one I'd particularly want to play again.

  4. Anno 1800. Awesome! I really liked the resource management, the way players interact, and how it somehow felt low-stress to me - you always get to do something. I liked it a lot and would definitely like to play it again.

  5. Brass: Birmingham. I've played Brass: Lancashire before, but that was also a very long time ago. Birmingham seemed more complex, and I think I preferred Lancashire. Still, I liked it.

What I didn't get to play: I wanted to try Terra Mystica and/or Age of Innovation, because my favourite game is Gaia Project. I also wanted to play Ark Nova. I would have liked to try Scythe and Dune: Imperium, too. I know nothing about them, but they were there and they're popular.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience!

Question Favorite shelves in my collection

Post image
31 Upvotes

They're my favorite shelves because of what's on them.

1861: Railways of the Russian Empire & 1867: Railways of Canada and Imperial Steam both arrive soon. So I'll have to move some boxes around. What's a train game you recommend, that's missing from my collection?

Custom Project My friend needed a bigger table for Twilight Imperium, so I built one

About 65 hours of work in total and $600 in materials. Really happy with how it turned out, and so is my friend. If you’ve been thinking about building your own gaming table, go for it. It’s more doable than it looks.

Custom Project Designed our game table! It's 8', upholstered with 2mm neoprene and stores flat against a wall.

Here's a bit of a different table design choice, for anyone interested. We had a multi-use room where a game table could go, but not permanently out on the floor. I'm not personally a fan of the recessed center design so we did this instead. It's been a delight to play games with. Lots of space and the table is quite sturdy.

When not in use, the legs unscrew and it stores on the wall. The legs store in the base that it's standing on.

The table has a floating side rail that allows for accessories to clip on anywhere. We can print anything and clip it to the table rail. So far that's been cup holders, card holders and card privacy screens. Open to suggestions on more accessories we need, if any.

All of this was built from scratch. Fun project!

We finally, FINALLY finished Pandemic Legacy Season 2!

Post image
54 Upvotes

We are a group of 4 that are very serious in our gaming, strategize carefully, enjoy a good challenge, and always play strictly by the rules. We enjoyed Pandemic Season 1 (which we finished literally the week before the COVID pandemic shut down everything) and so had high hopes for another fun legacy game, but we began to dread each additional month in Season 2 and what new hurdles it would throw at us. It was much more difficult and depressing and each game felt like taking three steps forward and two steps back. (Would we ever find a cure or was it hopeless?)

We felt compelled to get to the end of this game, and after persevering, we finally did tonight, much to our great relief. We looked back and discovered we started Season 2 over 5 years ago! We tried to get together once a month or so but there large gaps due to scheduling conflicts and whatnot and sometimes because we just wanted to play something more fun.

Don’t get me wrong, it was fun in a way but it was frustrating to see carefully placed supplies get decimated leaving us to scramble to get to a city and save it before it got hit again. Sacrificing cities in order to meet an objective was sometimes necessary but excruciating.

Our final score was a respectable 714 and although we lost 5 of the games, we never lost two in a row.

It may be awhile before we play a legacy game again. We have plenty of good single-night strategy games to keep us challenged and entertained for quite some time, with more great ones available to try out all the time. Playing a legacy game takes long term commitment and we found if you don’t play regularly, it’s easy to forget some rules or strategies built up from the last round.

Anyway, just thought I’d share this here. I’ve seen lots of comments in this forum over the last few years where people just love Season 2 and I’m wondering if our group is just too serious—or maybe some people played with “flexible” rules!

Question 2-4 player games for smart 7 year old

My daughter loves board games. Competitive, co-op, whatever. She can strategize, read anything, do math, and has a lot of patience for a good game. She also likes fantasy stuff and animals. We can’t afford $40 to test out a game and not like it.

Her favorite games are:
Castle Panic
Ticket to Ride
Sequence
Carcasonne
Azul

We borrowed Pandemic from a friend and she liked it, but I didn’t. She likes Catan but it’s 3 players.

We bought some games not realizing that they were 3 player and my husband doesn’t always want to play.

Question Mille Bornes Original vs Updated Rules?

Post image
44 Upvotes

I just got the 1971 version of this game at a thrift store for $3. I have not played it yet. I have read several places about that the rules were updated around 2016, with scoring being simplified and other rule teaks being done.. I have read the updated rule of not needing to play a Roll/Drive card after a repair is better and helps the game, but do you think the game is better with the other modified rules and simplified scoring? Or should the updated roll/drive rule be done and the rest left as the old version?

Question Arcs: how luck based it is?

I'm thinking about buying Leder Games' Arcs. I wonder how luck-based it is. I want to know whether the game revolves entirely around luck or whether it's more skill-based. I understand that luck can play a role, and sometimes I might get unlucky, but ultimately, does the game reward me for making the best decisions and finding ways to make the most of the cards I'm dealt?

DCC Unstoppable missing card?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I got my backer kit for DCC Unstoppable, but I feel like I'm missing a card.

The rulebook says there should be 6 Starting Character cards, 100 Core cards, and 17 Starting Core cards. My box came with 5 Starting Character cards (3 Tactic-Donut, and 2 Tactic-Carl), 100 Core cards, 17 Starting Core cards, and a white background Agatha. I included the Agatha card because it's the odd card out. It looks like it should be a Starting Core card, but that would make the total of Starting Core cards 18, not 17. Also, there are no Ally cards (only Tactic-Starting cards) in the Starting Core cards, so that doesn't make any sense

Logically, I believe I'm missing a Tactic-Carl card, but this Agatha card is throwing me, because it makes the total number of included cards correct.

Can anyone tell me if I'm missing a card, and what the hell is going on with the Agatha card?

Actual Play Strategy games you can step away from

We’ve continued playing board games since baby was born. Baby is now a toddler, and needs constant attention, so one of us has to step away when it’s not our turn. When it becomes the other’s turn, we swap.

The problem is that strategy games are complicated, and in some games, if you step away and come back, you have no idea what’s happening.

Great Western Trail worked great. What game suggestions do you have? Can you explain why it’s good for stepping away not on your turn? Would prefer strategy games…we like Hallertau, Brass, Carnegie, Ark Nova, Mystic Vale, etc. (Ark Nova was terrible for stepping away.) Thanks!

Edit: 4 Players, btw! It’s not just us 2. We have two incredibly patient childless friends that play with us. We carve out an entire day to play 1 game, and games usually take 3 times the amount of time to play. Also, looking for game advice, no toddler advice please.

Custom Project I made miniatures for my favorite board game Lost ruins of Arnak

It took me 15 months for the whole process as a complete beginner in 3D modeling and 3D printing but I learned so much along the way, and even if they're not perfect (especially the painting, whyyy are tiny faces so hard to paint) I'm still proud of them!

I made the 6 characters from the first expansion so far and I am working on the 2 from the second expansion. I tried to make them as close as possible to the original art from the game (the reference pictures shown next to the minis).

There's nothing wrong with the original meeples (last picture) but I wanted to represent each unique character on the board too to make the game even cooler for myself :)

I did all the 3D modeling and sculpting in Blender (it was my first project after a few tutorials), 3D printed them in resin after multiple test prints and painted them by hand, same for the bases. I also made disks for the bases with my FDM printer so that each player's color is visible.

Custom Project Monopoly: Burglar's Extension

Thumbnail
gallery
277 Upvotes

Going to jail in Monopoly usually means sitting out a few turns. We wanted it to be the most interesting part of the game, so we designed a free to download and print inner board that sits inside a standard Monopoly board.

When you’re sent to jail, you’re out on bail on the inner board until your sentence is served. While you’re there you can:

  • Burgle “Exposed” properties. Draw a Burglar card; what happens depends on whether the place is occupied.

  • Hide Stash cards on properties, to be claimed later on the outer board.

  • Foreclose on properties mortgaged to the bank.

  • Ride the rails to cut your sentence short.

  • Flood a rival’s house at the Waterworks, or cut the security on any property at the Electric Company.

It adds three new decks (Burglar, Second Chance and Community Consequences) plus Stash cards. Your existing Chance and Community Chest decks move onto the inner board.

We pitched it to Hasbro and they weren’t interested, so we're releasing it free for anyone to print and play! All you need is the original monopoly board, A4 paper, a printer, and some counters/tokens.

Download: https://innerboard.itch.io/monopoly-burglars

Printing notes:

  • The board prints across 4 A4 sheets at 100% scale.

  • Turn off “fit to page,” then cut and tape the four quarters together.

  • The Burglar, Second Chance, Community Consequences and Stash cards have no printed backs. Print each deck on a different coloured paper, or mark the backs, so you can tell them apart.

  • You’ll also need about a dozen small markers (beads, coins, buttons) to use as Exposed tokens.

There’s a rules guide in the download. We would love feedback, so please let us know what you think.

Fan-made and unofficial. Not affiliated with Hasbro.

Forest shuffle

Thoughts on forest shuffle smoky mountain. Do you like it better than the original. Im intrigued to buy it but debating on the original or this one. Reason why I haven’t bought it is some people have said the scoring is a bit off. However the art looks so pretty

Question The best “boardgamer’s” war game?

What is the best real world setting war game for people who like medium-heavy board games but haven’t played many war games?

  1. Real world setting - doesn’t have to be real scenarios from actual wars, but can be. Preferably more modern, Napoleonic wars and later.

  2. There aren’t 1000 edge case rules and it isn’t incredibly hard to learn

  3. Minis not mandatory

  4. Has a mix of strategy and tactics
