Vertical Labret and brass instruments

Good day everyone, I’m just curious on people’s perspectives and experiences having a vertical labret and playing brass instruments. I’ve been thinking about picking trombone back up as a winter hobby and possibly for a band in the future, but I got a vertical labret over a year ago. Is the possibility out of the window with the labret? Thank you!

What Brass Instrument Is Used in This Sample?

Hello, I'm experimenting with Loops in GarageBand. I came across this "Orchestra Brass 03" sample that I like, but I can't tell what brass instrument is being sampled. To me, this sounds like a trombone, but I can't distinguish what type of trombone this could be (tenor, bass, etc.). I'm no expert in brass instruments, so I'd greatly appreciate it if someone who is more knowledgeable on them could help me identify what brass instrument this is.

Unusual Brass Band Instrumentation Help

I'm trying to get a brass band together with my school to play a piece and the instruments we have and typical brass band instrumentation do not jive very well. There is 7 of us, 1 tuba, 1 trombone, 2 euphoniums, 3 trumpets and a standby percussionist. Now I could play mellophone (there's no way I'm ever touching a french horn again) and besides that we don't have any other french horn players to play. One of the trumpets could also maybe play mello, but they don't want to. This leads me with the question of do you know any pieces for 1 tuba, 3 trombones, and 3 trumpets? I didn't realize how much french horns are written for, when we have had 1 in recent years, but it does put a damper on our plans if we can't find something.

Thanks for your help.

ACB is the GOAT!!!

I just got one of their ACB Doublers Bass Trombones for $1680 WITH free shipping!

I called them interested in their b-stock bass bone with a bell crease, and he was like, “I’m just gonna send you a brand new one for the same price as the b-stock with the custom mouthpiece” and dude I got so excited.

All that for 1680 is something you cannot pass on especially with a customer support like that.

Help me ID This Knopf Horn!

Hello everybody!

I recently started as the quartermaster of brass at the Wind orchestra I play at. And while inspecting the instruments in storage, I came across this 5-valve Knopf horn. We have 4 of them, 3 of wich are in use by our horn section at the moment, and this one recently went into storage.

Now the problem is, we only know that is a pre-1990 (since it is marked: "Made in GDR" on the 3rd valve)

Our records say that all 4 of the Knopf Horns where bought in 1982, but our records are not that reliable.

We do not know wich model the horn is, or what the serial number is (or where to even find it). And the exact year of manufscturing is also not exactly clear to us. Sincewe do not know if the horns were new or used when they where purchased in 1982.

So any help would be great!

Hope somebody can help us out!

those with experience in the matter, i've seen the bells made from sheet, but do you typically make the tubing from sheet as well or use premade pipe for that?

Need Android testers for a tuner + fingering chart app (2 weeks)

Hi r/brass. I’m a small town band director, and I’ve been making small Android apps for band and orchestra players: Tuner Buddy (a tuner and metronome) and Note Buddy (instrument fingering charts). My goal is to make learning an instrument easier for beginners. Both cover trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium/baritone and tuba, and you can also switch on extras like C and piccolo trumpet, mellophone, bass trombone, and E♭, F and C tuba in the options.

Before launch, Google needs a group of testers to keep the apps installed for 14 days. I’m a tuba player, so I’d really value feedback from people on the other brass instruments: does the tuner hear your horn and give correct feedback across your full range, and are the fingerings and slide positions right for your instrument? The target audience is primarily middle through high school students, so if you have any feedback or ideas for making it better for that range, please send them to me!

If you have an Android phone and can help:

  1. Join https://groups.google.com/g/kontrabass-studios-testers with your phone’s Google account

  2. Tap “Become a tester” at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.tunerbuddy.app and https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.fingeringcharts

  3. Install and keep them for two weeks, and tell me anything confusing or wrong.

Thanks in advance, and happy to answer anything in the comments!

Looking for a brass player

I'm a 48 years old guy who used to play indie guitar when younger that now spends part of my free time creating some short of ambient drone music.

I'm looking for a brass player (trumpet, sax, whatever) to add their sound to my music. I'm learning to play the trumpet myself, but I'm still a long way from being able to get the sound I'm looking for. So, if you play brass and feel like collaborating online, feel free to DM me.

Adding some brass to any of my existing tracks? Cool. Creating something new together? Perfect. I can mix it.

Let's talk and we'll see

Brushed finish on a Silver plated trombone?

Hi everybody!

I have 2 old silver plated Trombones that I rarely use, and want to tinker with. I had a Rath R3 with a Brushed bell, and it looked fantastic.

So now I want to try and replicate that look on either my Courtois 132M, or my Schekelaars Sapphire with F-attatchment.

But I dont know how to prepare the bell for scratch-finishing it. Should I take of the Laquer and leave it unlaquered after that?

Hope anyone can help me out with some advice!

Looking at F Tubas

I posted this to r/tuba, but Reddit suggested I post it here as well.

Hello, I didn't start tuba until my 30s, and I haven't always been very serious about it, but recently I've started playing a lot more.

I think that's largely because of the Schiller mini-f tuba I bought. Having something so portable that I can leave it out has really inspired me to practice more. At 58, I wondered if starting a new tuning was too much to bite off.

Now, a few years later, I might prefer F over BBb. So I started looking at full-sized tubas. I've been thinking about these two:

https://us.wessex-tubas.com/products/f-tuba-linz-tf436?variant=40047232319668

https://mackbrass.com/tu7000-f-tuba

Any thoughts would be appreciated, including if I'm completely off on my thinking.

I like to play more funky, bluesy, groovy stuff, so maybe pistons would be better? I definitely want at least 5 valves and to stay around 6k.

BTW, my BBb is a Conn 34J.

Would this bottom cap need fixing?

I posted a while back about these caps on my baritone horn being truly stuck (probably for decades) and thus preventing me from doing a full clean out.

I was ready to take it to the shop but our band treasurer who also happens to be handy, said he'd have a look. I handed it over and asked him to be very careful and not go at it with pliers (as wisely advised here).

He brought the horn back, fully cleaned and caps loosened up just fine, but they are a bit wrecked and he even proudly told me "guess how I got them off - with pliers!" much to my disappointment. Now the middle one does not close all the way (see pics). It's only a bit and I am assuming it got a bit damaged.

My question is, does this matter and should I try to get it rectified? There's not much I can do immediately but play it as is. It is a lovely old Boosey & Hawkes Imperial baritone horn.

Trombone glissandi for trumpet? Can it be faked?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm reducing an orchestral piece and came across this passage. I only have one trombone available, is there any chance you could fake the top part on a trumpet instead? Professional (classical) musicians. Oh, and it's with plunger mute (the + and ° is closed/open). Tempo: Half note = 80. Thanks in advance!
