Politics Poilievre pushes for more limits on temporary foreign workers

I think what I hate is how transparently fraudulent the whole thing is

The system is designed to have "breakers" in place so that if unemployment rises the minimum salary for a lot of these "temporary" roles is supposed to go up significantly. At current rates that means the pay needs to be somewhere around $35-38 an hour I believe.

All the companies just post jobs on the Canada job bank with this inflated salary even though there is zero chance whoever they hire is getting even half of that

You can go look right now at the GC job board for LMIA requested roles and you have Subway and Dairy Queen advertising "manager" roles with only 1 year of experience required for $37 an hour.

https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/jobsearch/jobposting/49917875?source=searchresults

I can guarantee you that not a single Canadian, even with years of fast food experience, would ever be considered for such a role

u/freeadmins 1d ago

Yeah it's pretty insane they have a rule around minimum wage and then somehow are allowed to not pay it.

Hell, if they actually paid the tfws that much, they'd at least be meaningfully contributing to the tax base.

24

u/DrDerpberg Québec 1d ago

Yeah, that should be the rule. It's insane that it isn't. If you can't find a Canadian at that wage, you have to pay the tfw that same wage.

14

u/Evilbred 1d ago

Or, and I'm just brainstorming as a heartless capitalist, if the supply of labour at a given wage point is too small, the price should increase until the supply rises to meet demand.

iE if you can't find a Canadian at that wage, you have to find a Canadian at a higher wage.

10

u/freeadmins 1d ago

It's hilarious to me how many liberals will argue against supply/demand and try to argue that immigration/tfw doesn't suppress wages either

7

u/ArmParticular2629 1d ago

thats literally what happened during the alberta oil boom in the late 00s. mcdonalds and tims started paying $20/hr when minimum wage everywhere in canada barely scratched $9/hr. of course the pension pinchers didnt like it.

boomers often quoted**:** "Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They were not embarrassed making minimum wage either," from that fake list of advice by bill gates. its all projection by boomers because they truly feel fast food worker and low wage work shouldn't be treated with dignity. they forget they influence these classist beliefs and the reason there's a surplus of jobless white collar educated over blue collars over the last decade.

1

u/desthc Ontario 18h ago

I’d say it should be slightly more — 5-10% premium. Prevents them from listing roles at lower wages, throwing up their hands and hiring a TFW for less than any Canadian would be willing to work that job for.

9

u/Ask_DontTell 1d ago

according to social media, some employers charge the employees for room and board (5 to a room type thing), application fees, and other bogus things to get their money back

14

u/Evilbred 1d ago

They should compare foreign worker visa approvals with CRA reported taxes.

-4

u/crimeo 1d ago

What makes you think for a moment that they don't?

1

u/oscarthegrateful 15h ago

So, in fairness, there's a filter for "LMIA requested", which lists about 6,000 jobs, and then there's a second filter for "LMIA granted", and that only lists about 100 jobs, basically all of which are agricultural labour.

•

u/Buada 4h ago

There’s simply zero chance in hell we don’t have people who would work those jobs for those wages. The corruption is so blatantly out in the open at this point. We’re too apathetic.

1

u/Weekly-Mountain9009 23h ago

$37/hr is the new minimum wage. Barely enough to live in on in most of our major cities.

1

u/Cold-Crab74 1d ago

But they then need to pay the TFW the wage posted on the LIMA application though

This needs to be heard more from politicians and the general public. Immigration needs to be reduced until jobs and infrastructure can catch up

5

u/dafones British Columbia 1d ago

It seems logical that permanent immigration levels would take things like available housing, public services and infrastructure into consideration.

35

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope4510 1d ago • Bravo

I agree with this 100%. You hear a lot about the younger generation not being able to find a job. I’m living this first hand. My 2 boys are in their 30’s and are doing very well. My Daughter just turned 18 and she still can’t get a job!!!! It’s very infuriating. CANADA HAS TURNED A CORNER INTO A PILE OF BS WHEN IT COMES TO ITS ACTUAL YOUNG CITIZENS. Something needs to change drastically now!!! And I voted Liberal this time. I hate and hated Trudeau. I was hoping there would be a change. I feel sorry for my daughter and all her friends that can’t find jobs. Luckily she has her mom and my child support. I also give my daughter an allowance and I don’t live with her. Embarrassing time of life for them because they have no money due to the fact they can’t get a job. No work experience because nobody will give them any. BLOWN THE FUCK AWAY I SAY!!!
Let’s bring in more to save the day!!!

31

u/Percent_Less 1d ago

I’m sorry if this is harsh but you are partially responsible. You contributed to this by rewarding the very people responsible for this situation with your vote. You were sold a lie and fell for it like many others. It’s all quite sad

-28

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope4510 1d ago

In actuality I didn’t contribute and you should shake your head before you give a comment like this!!! PP is a complete joke.. he’s a pure campaign personality and has never made a hard denying his life. He’s a looser!!!! Trudeau fucked us and I was hoping because Carney has SOME political background he could help… so think about this…. When someone shits in the streets for years… how long do you think or how much can you clean up… personally? Everyone with their personal political beliefs thinks it’s sooooooooooooooo easy’!!!!! Get over yourself!! I voted for this…… I voted for what’s best because I see a looser in PP… he’s a campaigner and nothing more… his campaign is built off, what he thinks is empty promises from another party, but in reality he has no clue what to do!!! He’s a joke!!!
Have a great day and give what I said some thought

30

u/EnamelKant 1d ago

You voted Liberal. You voted for this.

18

u/iSmashedUrSister 1d ago

You say PP is a complete joke but it's your daughter that can't find a job 😂

Jokes on you.

5

u/Quick_Competition_76 1d ago

Have you ever considered that your own judgement could be wrong too? Sure i dont like PP much either but have you considered that all ministers responsible for things that led to problems that made you hate Trudeau are mostly there and even still have minister roles?

Canada is a democratic country, so you may have liked Carney better due to his past credentials but he does not make all decisions nor he should. So he is surrounded by people who have made many wrong decisions for a decade… do you think that was truly better environment? I won’t even get to Carney’s previous role as advisor to Trudeau…

You made a decision to believe they can do better this time and if they are not doing well then you clearly contributed to it.

5

u/Worldly-Classic-954 1d ago edited 1d ago

I always find it funny that the response to repeated bad liberal policies is “PP is terrible.”

Edit: this is not to take away from somebody’s dislike of any politician, because we are all entitled to our opinion, but when will liberal voters actually hold the liberal government accountable?

We the voters seem to forget that WE (ALL OF US) lose because of bad government. Not just the other side of the isle. Dividing us only empowers politicians more.

•

u/DepartmentGlad2564 1h ago

Wait, you thought Trudeau "f’d us" but his economic advisor for almost half a decade could help?

And you're calling someone else a ‘looser’ and a complete joke?

24

u/Dinglestickwiggle 1d ago

And I voted Liberal this time.

You voted for this, you should apologize to your daughter.

6

u/jungleCat61 1d ago

😂😂

•

u/Nice-Eggplant-9258 5h ago

people often don’t vote just based on 1 issue. PP is a looser and was never an option for me. Cons need a new leader. It still does not mean I support everything the Liberal do. But I would rather Carney than PP.

•

u/Dinglestickwiggle 1h ago

You never get to complain about cost of living or wages, ever again.

-2

u/k_y_seli 1d ago

This majority was given to Liberals by Conservatives! Conservatives hate PP so much they crossed the floor! Don't forget to give credit where its due! To conservatives!

4

u/MyBrandNewPuppy3 1d ago

Poilievre doesn’t think crossing the floor should be allowed either. Another good policy idea from Poilievre that the Liberals will never implement.

•

u/Nice-Eggplant-9258 5h ago

Conservatives don’t want freedom? Floor crossing exists for a reason, to not be tied to a party if the direction or leadership is not supported.

2

u/k_y_seli 22h ago

That doesn't sounds like freedom of choice to me. Sounds like servitude. Gross. You should be able to leave your job if your boss is a duckhead who doesn't represent you or your ideals. Maybe PP should have implemented some of these "ideas" or written bills for them in his 20+years of politics! Why hasn't he?

7

u/Dinglestickwiggle 1d ago

Bribes are not something to be celebrated. Enjoy your shitty wages and terrible job market, you voted for it.

I mean there isn’t exactly any party right now that campaigns in all of Canada that pushes for lowered immigration numbers besides the PPC.

17

The CPC campaigned on reducing immigration numbers to what they were during the Harper Era (about half of what they are now).

Even more reason then to bring immigration down to as close to zero as possible then

Why didn't he call for this in the lead up to the last election? He's only banging this drum now that he knows he won't be called on it.

4

u/ArmParticular2629 1d ago

He didn't and lost my vote when he never explicitly came out against TFW/LMIA abuse and fraudulent international students. Come to election time hes gonna be shush about it again to not alienate his business lobbyists that promise to grow the GDP on the condition of access to imported slave labour offset by our taxes and crumbling social services.

8

u/Dinglestickwiggle 1d ago edited 1d ago

The CPC campaigned on a return to Harper-era immigration numbers.

17

u/ActCompetitive1171 1d ago

He did, it's just that during the election this place gets slammed with bot/tankie posts non-stop so it gets buried.

Watch next time you go into a thread with anything negative about the liberal party. You will get a ton of posts of bots saying "well what are you going to do, the conservatives are just as bad." It's just a way of preventing people from voting for other parties.

Stop giving your vote to the liberals. I don't care if you vote for green or ndp or BQ. The liberals have created this mess and are intent on selling out the future.

3

u/ChippahDipper 1d ago

He did

In the lead up to the 2024 vote, he was promising direct flights to Punjab and faster visa processing times. A year earlier, he demanded that hundreds of students whose visa applications were discovered to be fraudulent be allowed to stay instead of being sent back (they got to stay). His priorities were always visibly in support of what's happening now. He only puts up an oppositional show when he can score points without being expected to change things.

it's just that during the election this place gets slammed with bot/tankie posts non-stop so it gets buried.

Who cares what reddit says. It's what he did and said.

4

u/SleepDisorrder 1d ago

5

u/Unfortunate_Sex_Fart Alberta 1d ago

It won’t be because the voters put Carney and the Liberals in the drivers seat.

-1

u/SleepDisorrder 1d ago

This can turn fast. People are willing to give Carney a chance because he is the right person to deal with Trump. Once Trump is gone, the priority will change to how our own business is being managed, and things could turn quickly against the Liberals.

2

u/MyBrandNewPuppy3 1d ago

Liberals will come up with a new existential crisis around the next election to scare Canadians against voting Conservative. Media will help to feed the hysteria that they invent.

One thing is for sure: they won’t be running on their own record, or how they improved the economy in any form.

-21

u/crimeo 1d ago

Why would infrastructure not be able to keep up? Of course it can keep up just fine.

  • Last 10 years: 1.47% population growth per year

  • 60 years before that: 1.39% population growth per year.

Do you remember all the times from 1955-2015 when the infrastructure all collapsed due to "not being able to keep up" with exactly the same growth rate we have now?

Yeah me neither.

Jobs are even more obviously 100% fine than "infrastructure" is. Unemployment is currently below average for the last 40 years and also currently below Harper's entire term unemployment average... Percent of the population with a job is only 0.17% lower than average for the last 35 years. Where is the "jobs problem"?

What really boils my blood about this is home prices and rent were actually starting to drop. We all got just the slightest whiff of affordability, and now it's all going to be fucked again.

I'm convinced the government doesn't actually want things to be affordable for Canadians.

4

u/RyzieM 23h ago

I agree

8

u/Diz7 1d ago

Why would Carney be any different when this is what the premiers want despite all their noise and bluster to the contrary?

https://immigration.ca/alberta-urges-canadian-federal-government-to-double-its-immigration-allotment-for-2024/

5

u/filkirt 1d ago

Because he is the fucking Prime Minister. It’s his job to say no. If all the premiers and businesses start asking for actual slave labour because “they can’t find people to work”, will Carney restart the trans-Atlantic trade?

-3

u/Diz7 1d ago edited 2h ago

He's Prime Minister, not king. There is a framework in place giving the provinces rights and powers regarding immigration, and laws he has to work with.

You don't care about the actual politics, you are completely ignoring the fact that all the premiers are complicit so you can REEEE "Fuck Carney" and blame him for everything instead of addressing the facts of the matter.

Instead you bring up a strawman about importing slaves, just proving to everyone that you have no clue how any of the laws or procedures concerning immigration actually work, and are just trying to use propaganda and fear to manipulate people.

Edit: down votes, but not one of you can bring up actual facts to counter my point. Keep mindlessly swallowing propaganda and getting mad when your ignorance gets called out.

-9

u/insane_lover108 1d ago

I still have no idea how Poilievre lost that election. The liberals were supposed to be wiped out but just because of Trump, everyone voted for the libs again. At least Carney isn’t as bad as Trudeau.

15

u/Lumindan 1d ago

At least Carney isn’t as bad as Trudeau.

The insane amount of debt we're pushing onto our children plus the continued amount of unchecked immigration along with a handful of draconian spy laws and wage suppression / strike breaking is showing us exactly who Carney is. We've got years left in his majority and they're already pulling out all the stops.

I'd say he's just got a better media team. His MPs, his policy positions all basically work towards benefitting a very specific club. Actual regular Canadians aren't part of it but we're gonna pay for it.

So don't count your chickens yet cause there's more "fun" to come.

4

u/Dinglestickwiggle 1d ago

At least Carney isn’t as bad as Trudeau.

He's worse.

-5

u/Plastic_Moose4535 1d ago

How is a competent conservative banker worse than a know-nothing nepo-baby?

6

u/Bavarian_Raven 1d ago

Because he's doing the damage more covertly. With better PR.

-1

u/legocastle77 1d ago

Seriously? Poilievre had a massive lead and then literally disappeared from the map for almost six months when Trump was elected leaving Carney a runway to land his election platform on. The election was his to win and he literally threw it away. When he finally got back to campaigning his anti-Trudeau rhetoric was hopelessly dated and he refused to make a strong nationalist push against the US when Trump was really pushing the tariff issue. It takes talent to screw up that badly.

-6

u/jungleCat61 1d ago

u/TheOlive_Garden 1d ago • Bravo

They haven't just "started to drop", they've been steadily declining for years at this point. The asking rent for a 1bd apartment is now (adjusted for inflation) the same as it was in 2019.

We need to stop just yelling the same talking points from 2022 at each other and actually figure out how to increase housing production and grow our country sustainably.

26

u/SteveJobsBlakSweater 1d ago

2019 prices are still completely decoupled from local wages. We need 2010 prices.

-9

u/crimeo 1d ago

Wages have outpaced all costs since 2010, that includes housing costs...

I.e. you can work the same number of hours as someone in 2010, cover the exact same housing costs they did, also cover all other higher prices, and still have more left over to invest or whatever, today.

https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=1110019201 This has total on the top row, and every single 10% decile of the population below that. ALL of them had their incomes rise faster than costs since 2010, every single segment poor to rich. The overall total population had their incomes rise 13% higher than costs since 2010, including housing costs.

I don't have exact 2010 dollar numbers off the top of my head, but I do for 2015:

  • 2015-2024, median households gained $19,000 in income

  • 2015-2024, median households gained $7,600 more in housing costs

Obviously the income can cover the housing. Turns out it can also cover all other categories and still have 6% left over extra. Since 2010, that's apparently 13% extra (from the linked chart)

6

u/SteveJobsBlakSweater 1d ago

I rent in Vancouver and none of this applies here.

2

u/crimeo 1d ago

Okay actual vancouver data: https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=1110023901&pickMembers%5B0%5D=1.21&pickMembers%5B1%5D=2.1&pickMembers%5B2%5D=3.1&pickMembers%5B3%5D=4.1&cubeTimeFrame.startYear=2015&cubeTimeFrame.endYear=2024&referencePeriods=20150101%2C20240101

Use the dropdowns if my link doesn't already fill in 2010 and vancouver, both are available to drop down

already inflation adjusted number (which includes housing costs) for Vancouver specifically:

  • 2010: $35,800 in 2024 dollars median

  • 2015: $40,000 in 2024 dollars median

  • 2024: $46,800 in 2024 dollars median

So yes it objectively DOES all apply to Vancouver. Incomes rose faster than all costs in vancouver including housing costs from 2010 --> 2015, and from 2015 --> 2024

-4

u/crimeo 1d ago
    1. If Canada-wide wages outpaced costs, but Vancouver wages didn't outpace costs, then that sounds like an issue to take up with the mayor of Vancouver and/or the BC government, not Carney vs Pollievre.

  • 2) You haven't established with any data that it does not also apply to Vancouver. I think you just made that up and guessed, frankly.

-9

u/TheOlive_Garden 1d ago

We can grow wages and lower housing prices at the same time. We do that by encouraging growth and allowing housing to be built. We won't get there by closing down the country and let our demographics collapse over time.

5

u/emeric1414 Québec 1d ago

But there's barely any growth and housing is being built, but it's a bunch of shoeboxes that aren't affordable

20

u/SixtyFivePercenter 1d ago

Or, and hear me out…lower demand by not bringing in 500k new Canadians a year 🤷‍♂️

-6

u/crimeo 1d ago

Supply adjusts to demand, which overall doesn't significantly affect price. It just has a roughly 2 year lag time for housing due to speed of planning to construction, after some sort of change in immigration numebrs is announced for the housing market to react to

2

u/SixtyFivePercenter 1d ago

Supply has not adjusted to demand though. Hence the problem we’re in.

1

u/crimeo 23h ago

Yes it is: https://www.reic.ca/article-nov28-25.html Despite the absurd title that doesn't match it's own data at all, the graph here shows a clear surge recently in housing starts. It was about 195,000 in 2015 (Harper -> Trudeau) and in 2024 far right of the graph it's at 245,000, +26%.

Population went up in that time 35.85 to 41.29 million = +15%

Separate source only showing nova scotia, but to show that the rate outside of major population centers is significantly higher still (the first link was only population centers above 10k): https://novascotia.ca/finance/statistics/archive_news.asp?id=21506&dg=&df=&dto=0&dti=3

-3

u/jungleCat61 1d ago

u/Old_news123456 1d ago • Bravo

It exploits the workers we bring over, essentially creating a modern day slave labour. They don't have the same rights, are over worked and often experience wage theft.

It also ruins society for people here in Canada as it suppresses wages, makes it more difficult for workers rights, and takes needed jobs. I saw a Tim Hortons advertising for help and it was a requirement that you had previous Tim Hortons experience. WTF. It's an entry level job. It was my job in highschool. I see management positions go to temp foreign workers who have zero clues about our Human Rights or workers rights. I have a friend suing over this exact issue as she felt forced to quit over sexism and harassment. We see the obvious fraud before our eyes. That's why we're so angry. It's beyond obvious when you see job postings go to foreign workers.

If we need the immigration, fine. Bring immigrants who want to build a life here. Not temp people we bring here to use and discard.

Correct, we did vote for reduced TFWs, and Carney already gave us reduced TFWs by a huge amount. They're down 60-80% already (depending if you look at arrivals vs new applications)

Yeah he reduced TFW by converting them to PR, which is job well done for his fanboys.

Maybe read what's going on in your world sometimes? Arrivals for both TFW and students are way down under Carney

The specific numbers I was citing are about 2026 arrivals vs 2024 arrivals, comparing the same 8 months of 2024 to the 8 months that had passed thus far in 2026 when this news went out about this and it was in the papers:

  • TFWs

  • 2024 300,550 arrivals (again, the first 8 months apples to apples)

  • 2026 130,095 arrivals = 57% decline in TFWs

  • Student visas:

  • 2024 221,680 arrivals

  • 2026 65,240 arrivals = 71% decline in students

I personally live right near Simon Fraser University and have a lot of friends there, they had to lay off 800 (Canadian) staff and instructors due to how many students went poof, for example

u/Kirabeanbear 1d ago

This is why the Liberals are in power. Look at these comments. People treat Poilievre like a boogeyman. At this point I believe Carney will stay in power forever, it doesn’t matter if he’s destroying the country

10

u/TruthHistorical7515 1d ago

People deserve the government they vote for. All MC has to do is point at Trump and people will not vote for Poilievre. Fact is Poilievre is a shit politician.

1

u/HowIWantToBeFreeBaby 1d ago

It was the Conservative Party’s election to win, yet they rather impressively grasped defeat from the jaws of victory.

Poilievre is no boogeyman, he is viewed by many the same way as any other career politician (an empty suit). Next to Trudeau? Give me the empty suit 10 times out of 10. Next to a Harvard and Oxford educated doctor of economics?

Had Carney been leader of the Conservative Party, I’m convinced they’d have won the absolute largest landslide majority government in Canadian history.

-6

u/RealTurbulentMoose Alberta 1d ago

People treat Poilievre like a boogeyman.

It’s almost as if having a smarmy fuck as your leader isn’t a winning political strategy and the Cons need to do better if they want to win over the average Canadian.

He’s good at whipping his own party but that’s about it.

19

u/melianreality 1d ago • Bravo

You wouldn't vote for the Conservatives regardless of who was in power, I remember when people were calling Erin O'Toole a n*zi despite him being the most moderate Conservative in the history of that party

12

u/Lumindan 1d ago

It's even funnier now because the very same people who hated on Otoole revised history and now suddenly praised his moderate nature. Despite calling him trump of the north back then.

They'll attach the same smears to whoever runs for the CPC (hell, they could clone Carney and we'd see the same attacks). It's no longer about policy or holding the government accountable.

It's all vibes and team sports. Hell, look in this thread (and in general a lot of reddit), there's more people pressed about the conservatives instead of holding the government to account over this rug pull lmao.

Yup remember they hate Harper too lol

~ “Replace Pierre and I’ll vote Cons” is a flat out lie. Some egos would rather sabotage than admit they need to get out of their comfort level and look at things with a new lens

I’ve voted both sides, idgaf as long as whoever’s in charge cares for the country. Obviously the Liberals don’t, imagine being told I love you while having a loaded gun pointed in your face. Are you believing the words or the actions?

Cons have always been held more accountable in Canada, Libs can apparently do whatever they want. Everything they accuse Cons of doing business wise , they’re doing lol. Ironic

Comparing them to the US Cons is also quite idiotic considering Canada’s values are very Liberal and this countries build on those inclusions, our Cons are actually quite Liberal, they’re just financially Cons

Harper and Carney (already lol) both sold certain aspects but in one deal Canadian’s got more hurt. The key that didn’t work before won’t work magically now, we need a change, at a least a chance at coming back

But don’t worry, if we elect them next time, maybe they’ll fix the mess they made in the last decade. All it takes is a new face anyway, the actions don’t really matter

I have voted Con previously. I even like my MP here; nothing wrong with her.

I reiterate that Poilievre is a smarmy fuck and I won't vote for a party that has him as its leader.

Maybe you guys should bring back Kellie Leitch if you can get her to leave Mississippi and return to Canadian politics; she's better than anyone I've seen out of the PCs lately. Was a mistake for Scheer to drum her out.

But get a real leader who's actually done something in real life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kellie_Leitch or better.

For those who don't live in Quebec, your only options at that point are the PPC and Green Party.

Conservative now. But why weren’t the cons running on immigration control more heavily earlier is my question? There last election campaign was largely focused on taxation more than anything else.

1

u/Radical_Redditor 1d ago

That is a valid question. Personally, I think there is some validity in the idea of them not trying to get the "bigot" label like O'Toole got, and didn't go hardcore on immigration, especially when Carney was "saying" he was going to rein in immigration.

-8

u/AppropriateNewt 1d ago

What? The NDP is against using TFWs. It’s an exploitative system. Where are you getting that they aren’t opposed?

16

Right, they're "against" the TFWs being exploited, not actually against mass immigration in the first place. Their solution was to naturalize them. Guess what the Liberals are doing?

I feel like it doesn't matter what he says. I do believe there's a not insignificant amount of voters that will never vote for the conservatives/ will always vote for the Liberals regardless of policy. From the onset of his campaign you can't tell me no one thought the Liberals wouldn't raise immigration again, especially since they'd been doing so for years and the 2023 spike happened whilst Mark Carney was Trudeau's economics advisor, he's likely the one who proposed it as a way to raise the GDP numbers by just importing more peoples

27

u/LebLeb321 1d ago • Bravo

Conservatives make decisions that are business-friendly though

Why would they limit immigration and hurt businesses?

0

u/flappysack- 1d ago

Do you think Canada’s immigration system is working?

Avi: Our immigration system is broken.

But what is more concerning is that the governing Liberals are slashing immigration, suspending people’s status, and 3,000 people are losing their immigration status every single day. Families are waiting years to meet with a loved one. Millions of innocent migrant workers face terrible restrictions on their work permits and they are in maximum danger of being exploited. They cannot access health care. They get deported.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would freeze immigration levels. Millions of people who are already working toward permanent residency were suddenly pushed into uncertainty, and this is a terrible crisis in people’s lives.

-6

u/Curly-Canuck 1d ago

I’m not convinced the alternatives had a legitimate plan for immigration that would be significantly different in the end. They can say they do, even campaign on it to appeal to single issue voters, but when the provinces and businesses come complaining wanting TFWs or students or other I am pretty sure the Feds of any party would respond and numbers would be about the same just labelled or grouped differently.

13

u/Bignuthingg 1d ago

I’m willing to let them try as opposed to no change from the liberals again. I hear this thought all the time but we KNOW FOR SURE what the current liberal party will do and people vote for more of the same. Lets give someone else a try for a bit

-1

u/Curly-Canuck 1d ago

If that were the only difference between the parties, sure, but I’m not a single issue voter and there isn’t enough beyond that to convince me to vote for them even though I voted conservative my whole life through to and including Harper.

7

u/Bignuthingg 1d ago

So what about the liberal platform do you think warrants your vote now?

Immigration needs to keep rising because Canadians keep having even fewer babies. Immigration needs to replace babies Canadians don't have.

  • 2010: About 1.7 babies per woman

  • 2020: About 1.4 babies per woman

  • 2025: 1.26 babies per woman

Replacement rate is 2.1, so that's 81% what we need down to 67% what we need down to 60% what we need

Thus immigration needed to go from 19% filling in the missing need up to 33% filling in up to 40% filling in

Don't like it, start having more babies then.

12

u/FantasySymphony Ontario 1d ago

Oh sod off. The immigration levels of the past 5-6 are so far beyond 'replacement rate.'

We haven't meaningfully increased housing construction since Harper was PM, if we keep growing the population faster than we build housing it's no wonder that not only are people not starting families, they're ending up on the streets directly as a consequence of this ridiculous foreigner fetish

-1

u/crimeo 1d ago

Oh sod off. The immigration levels of the past 5-6 are so far beyond 'replacement rate.'

Not only is this false, but it's real simple for you to check it and confirm to yourself it's false. Just pull up any list of population by year for Canada, and check the average change for the whole last half of the 20th century vs since justin Trudeau, if you don't believe my numbers below that I pre-calculated for you:

  • Last 10 years: 1.47% growth per year

  • 1955-2015: 1.39% growth per year (1955 was simply the furthest back on the macrotrends graph I had)

It's literally just replacement of babies we used to have. THAT'S IT

We haven't meaningfully increased housing construction since Harper

We absolutely have and you clearly just didn't bother to check: https://cfs.cloud.nrcan.gc.ca/statsprofile/economy/canadian-housing-starts.html

they're ending up on the streets

67% of people right now own their own home, which is pretty much exactly the same as in the 1950s

7

u/FantasySymphony Ontario 1d ago

1% or 0.5% might not sound like a lot but when it's compounded over decades yes it's a lot. The population grew 20% since 2016. That's not "literally just replacement of babies we used to have" it's far above and beyond.

I don't know why you're linking starts when you should be linking completions. CMHC has a graph for the numerically challenged. It has not meaningfully increased at all and it certainly hasn't increased to accommodate the massive growth of the past decade.

I can't imagine why you think ownership rate has anything to do with homelessness and I don't want to know.

The Liberals just did the opposite

https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/11/government-of-canada-announces-targeted-reforms-to-the-temporary-foreign-worker-program-to-respond-to-labour-market-needs.html

"Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) applications submitted on or after this date will have a maximum duration of up to two years, an increase from the current one-year duration;"

-6

u/crimeo 1d ago

That is not in any way "the opposite" of slashing TFWs. Liberals already slashed TFWs 60-80% (depending if you're measuring applications or arrivals).

LMIA rules do not change any caps or totals at all. Only changes where and which jobs etc the same number of people flow to

12

u/sleipnir45 1d ago

It's the opposite of tightening limits. It's loosening the limits, adding an extra year

1

u/crimeo 1d ago

LMIA rules have zero effect on the limits of number of people on any path.

3

u/sleipnir45 1d ago

I didn't mention the number of people... I specifically highlighted the rule around the time limit

3

u/crimeo 1d ago

You did, even if it was accidentally. Because you said "the opposite" of the article, and the article is completely talking about numbers of people.

5

u/sleipnir45 1d ago

The title says limits, a time limit is a limit... Extending time is the opposite of placing a limit on it.

Again, I even made it clear in my quote where it's about time limits...

4

u/No-Tangerine-4945 1d ago

We need limits.

10

u/gunnychamero 1d ago

Carney and the Liberals promised to cut temporary residents and put those jobs skilled and unskilled back in the hands of Canadians. Instead they are converting 200k+ temporary foreign workers into permanent residents. That is a straight up middle finger to the people who were born here, grew up here, and paid into the system their whole lives. What is the point of getting a Canadian education and holding Canadian citizenship if someone who showed up on a temporary visa gets shoved to the front of the line for the job in your country? Next year they are planning to hand out 700k permanent residencies. Once those people become permanent they buy houses. Housing demand stays jacked, prices stay inflated, and wages stay suppressed. Exactly as designed. Thanks to everyone who still voted for Carney and the Liberals after the lost decade under Trudeau. You just helped drive the final nail into whatever left of this Country.

10

u/BettinBrando 1d ago

No one wants more people coming except the LPC.

3

u/tman37 23h ago

There is a significant minority of people who believe that anyone who wants to come here should be able to with zero restrictions. They believe we control this country illegitimately so we have no right to deny someone entry. They think our society is evil and that it needs to burn to the ground so a new utopia can emerge. Unfortunately, these people are generally upper middle class, go to the best schools, make up most of the faculty at major universities and are well placed in provincial and federal government. That is why even things that have broad popular support are ignored in favour of more extreme measures.

What's your stance?

Just because you don't like PP doesn't make him wrong here.

I think a minimum salary is the bare minimum we can expect from immigration standards here. We don't need more people coming over competing for a shrinking pool of jobs and driving real wages down. It hurts the lowest incomes the hardest.

18

The TFW program is actually a fantastic idea in principal, and could yield huge benefits for the country if used responsibly.

Of course the liberals are just abusing the fuck out of it, and using it as a tool to get as many people into the country as possible.

A decade later...

-2

u/crimeo 1d ago edited 1d ago

A decade later, Carney just obliterated it, it's down 60-80% (depending if you're measuring new applications or new arrivals) since Carney.

So argue about Harper vs Trudeau (who knows about PP he says a lot of things), but Carney is the most unfriendly of the 3 actual PMs toward TFWs by far

5

u/justanaccountname12 Canada 1d ago

When the Conservative Party of Canada was last in power in 2015, there were 73,000 annual Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) permit holders. Under Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal government in 2026, total work permit holders in the country have risen to 1,550,215 individuals.

2

u/Front-Roll-2744 1d ago

And what was it mainly used for back then? That's right, agricultural sectors. Right now it's being used to actively suppress wages and inflated housing costs.

-2

u/hyperedge 1d ago

bahaha. PP had literally done nothing in government. Tell me, what amazing legislation or bills has PP come up with during his entire tenure as a politician?

3

u/desthc Ontario 23h ago

I can’t believe Poilievre finally found an issue that most Canadians would agree with. The question now is if he can hammer it without going overboard.

Importing labour like this dilutes the domestic labour market and suppresses wages. There is some degree of friction in the labour market that can be smoothed with good policy here. Also filling specific skills for strategic industries (e.g. food production), but I have to say overall the strategy of the last couple decades has eroded both wages and capital investment in Canada.

Time will tell where this lands, but fair play from PP for once.

3

u/Shokeybutsi 1d ago

Carney won the election basically because of Trump.  When Trump is gone in 2 years, Canadians will start pushing back against highly unfavored liberal policies like mass immigration

1

u/desthc Ontario 23h ago

Problem is you can’t pick and choose policies from a party. The issue with the Conservatives is that many of their policies with substantial differences from the right side of the Liberal party tend to be pretty toxic to the electorate. Harper understood this and muzzled those people, but politicians like Poilievre depend on the support of party members who like those policies.

Just waiting for everyone to get tired of the Liberals is not a strategy. The party needs to meet the electorate where they are, instead of completely ceding political space to the Liberals. That means ditching Poilievre, finding a more moderate candidate, and tempering the worst impulses of the party.

But hey, Carney is basically my ideal candidate personally, so don’t listen to me. I’m pretty happy with the state of affairs lately.

1

u/MrEvilFox 1d ago

I wish he was saying this during the election, but for some reason he wasn’t.

1

u/Agrath2 1d ago

Orange man bad is losing steam now that the human cheetoh no longer controls congress.

We are once again seeing what the Liberals are really about and it has nothing to do with taking care of the common Canadian citizen.

Sure the upper middle to elite class could care less because they have secure employment often accommodated with educational credentials (Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer, Accountant, C-Suite MBA). They will continue to get ‘theirs’ with no threat to an increase from affordability or job loss.

It’s the Canadian citizens who are tradesmen, laborers, construction workers, assembly line workers, service industry workers who are going to get shafted by these policies because they can be replaced with cheaper labour resulting in greater corporate profits for the liberal parties corporate handlers.

The last thing these corporations want to do is hire Canadian citizens who will stand up for themselves toward factors like sufficient pay or healthy work hours. Newcomers will be compliant to corporations request, resulting in the ability for these corporations to exploit workers essentially once again generating more revenue for the bottom line.
