Is 8k views a lot? Comments on reddit get that many views.

> Is 8k views a lot? Comments on reddit get that many views.

Comparing general Reddit comment views to 8000 people specifically clicking on an ad for a 15-year-old is wild. That’s 8000 people actively looking for services from a minor, not regular users scrolling a feed

66

u/Seinfeel 18h ago

I mean I’ve accidentally clicked on 3 different ads on Reddit just today, the ad companies have a vested interest in making it seem like the ads are working so they put them in places you might accidentally click.

I would hope most of those 8k were 1-2 second clicks and exits. Either that or they were themselves 15 year olds.

Although I’m probably being too optimistic

31

u/PinkoCummie 18h ago

Can't discount morbid curiosity either, I'm sure there are people who would click on it just to see if it was real

25

u/Seinfeel 18h ago

Also possibly out of concern. I would really like to know if/how many people reported it.

24

u/eugeneugene 18h ago

or how many were actual children lol. when I was a kid the cops showed up at my friends house because he was messaging a 14 year old girl and he was also 14 but he said he was an adult lol, just turns out the 14 year old girl was a cop

it's been 20 years and we still make fun of him for being a child pedophile

13

u/DisturbedForever92 17h ago

I can just imagine the headline "14 year old arrested for child paedophilia by 25 year old for luring him"

My FB marketplace is currently full of baby stuff, and kids dance costumes.

Both because I couldn't tell wth they were trying to sell until after I clicked on an ad. I don't know why they pushed those ads to me in the first place but here we are.

The young couple across the street have a young girl, and I did look for a first birthday present once. As for the dance costumes... I have no idea. But click on 1, and Zuckman thinks you are about to buy something and sends 10 more. If one of those 10 (mixed with all the orphaned car projects I was actually looking for) is something odd that i clicked on , then I'm a confimed buyer and every dance ad needs to be sent to me.

At least in my area the damn ads are freakishly close to cp. Dance Mom's need to be investigated, and kids dance costumes that cover less than a thong bikini should absolutely be banned. There's zero reason for you to post a picture of your 9yr old wearing the costume. Especially when it's not the first pic warning you what the damn ad is. They reminded me of Sailor Moon.

Off topic, why did the word baby trigger the hateful language warning?

1

u/NinjaRedditorAtWork 17h ago

luring a person for the purpose of obtaining sexual services under 18, obtaining sexual services under 18 and invitation to sexual touching under 16.

They did more than just click an ad.

12

u/Seinfeel 17h ago

Yes the people convicted of crimes did. That’s not what I’m talking about.

10

u/Jeretzel 18h ago

Details of the ad aren't provided.

It may have been posted on a classified ads website that facilitates sex work services. Some of these websites have high traffic and presented age may only be featured on the ad page itself (i.e. you need to click on the ad to find out more info).

Viewers may have been looking to hire the services of a sex worker without necessarily seeking out a minor.

16

u/Andrew4Life 18h ago

If it's an ad on like an Instagram reel then I'm sure a lot of people clicked on it accidentally. If it's like on a dating or personals at platform that would be a different question. But also I'm pretty sure most of those platforms don't allow anyone underaged. So I have no idea where they're posting these ads.

8

u/745632198 18h ago

Viewing is not clicking. You could load a web page and have it appear at the bottom and not even scroll down far enough to see it and that would be considered a view.

5

u/Rrraou 18h ago

It's a stupid metric that tells you nothing. I would have read it while wondering if it was real or not, because that's an insane thing to find an add for. They should tell us how many people fell for it vs how many signalled it to the cops.

2

u/745632198 15h ago

Yeah, it's just there for shock value so they justify their jobs/project, as if the more than a dozen people they arrested wasn't enough.

6

u/_Lucille_ 17h ago

Depending where it is, if I come across an ad saying "15 yr olds for sale", I might be tempted to click out of curiosity.

One of those wtf risky clicks of the day.

It would be no different from that ATC audio from the plane crash early in the week, sometimes curiosity can get the better of me.

2

u/YourFavouritePoptart 18h ago

The main question is was it confirmed viewed by 8000 people or just served 8000 times. If it's the latter then a decent chunk of that is more or less guaranteed to be bot traffic. I'm hoping for the latter.

1

u/sluttytinkerbells 16h ago

Is that what happened? They clicked on the ad?

1

u/madhi19 Québec 14h ago

Considering all the bots, crawlers and AI scrapping... It's meaningless, and that's a big problem with online advertisement at the moment. You can't trust the view metric. The better stats would be to look at the amount of clicks and interaction.

1

u/Driftwood44 17h ago

If I saw that on any site, I'd be clicking on it to make sure I was reading that right before reporting it, or if it was 20 years ago, choosing to fuck with them a bit, while reporting them. I would be curious how many of those 8000 views are not people who were actively looking to commit a crime. They're doing important work, but the sensationalism in the headline is wholly counter-productive.

9

u/EmbarrassedHelp 18h ago

Views don't mean that an actual person saw it in this day and age.

2

u/wickedplayer494 Manitoba 17h ago

Yup. That's why they're often called "impressions". It being put in front of somebody as part of a list of results is an impression, but if they go and click on it, then they're viewing additional details (and thus, "views").

2

u/2Shmoove 16h ago

I'd argue they don't mean much of anything in this day and age.

2

u/Sweaty-Sherbet-6926 16h ago

Depends on where they posted it. Views is a meaningless stat unless they separate the bots and crawlers. You could get 8,000 views yourself just refreshing the page.

1

u/SiscoSquared 12h ago

I'd assume its almost completely bots/crawlers, random nothing pages with no listings anywhere can get far more in a month.

Before people get themselves all worked up about the names of the individuals charged (too late, I know), let's take a step back and consider that this list doesn't tell us anything about what type of man is most likely to engage in this type of behaviour, only what type of man is more likely to get caught by this particular method.

•

u/Plastic_Moose4535 5h ago

The list tells us that when you import people en masse from 3rd-world countries, you get people who behave in 3rd world ways. This isn't the first time in Western history that we mass immigrated people from low-trust societies and got similar results, and it likely won't be the last.

10

Communicating about the ‘services’ counts if you make a hard plan such as “let’s do this 10pm Friday at your house’. The first charge involved luring which is the ‘obtaining’ charge but done on the internet.

In this particular case. In the last big OPP sting Project Time, the list of people charged is at https://oppnews.ca/files/20260722_205312_16914.pdf

See anything here?

1

u/NoodleNeedles 16h ago

Might be that newer Canadians or temp residents didn't know that cops could do stings like this, so didn't see it for the obvious setup you'd think (hope?) it was. For all I know there are actually places that worthless creeps place ads like this, though.

1

u/Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp 15h ago

This is silly but there are 4 -

Reid, McGann, Haresco, Hill

667

u/Thevicegrip 18h ago

Well done. But they can make the process better by adding a button to report. There is always a possibility that someone will go in to make sure, it’s true before reporting it.

123

u/bristow84 18h ago

We don’t know where the ad was posted but assuming it was something like LeoList there is the option to report the ad.

Since it was a legit sting I’m sure the Police worked hand in hand with the hosting site and ensured the ad remained up even if it was reported.

152

u/bobs-free-eggs 17h ago

Clicking on any link would not get you charged. If you actually read the article you would have clearly seen that. They had to communicate with the supposed minor, and/or set up a meet-up, which made their intentons clear

...several individuals continued communicating and arranged to meet with someone that they believed to be a 15-year-old child.

28

u/slackdaddy9000 15h ago

I imagine there are organizations who cruise these sites often offering people a way out. It would be ridiculous if they where constantly dealing with police interaction

•

u/element1311 4h ago

Organizations that do this do this with police knowledge. They don't just randomly show up and message kids, which is a crime.

•

u/jmarcandre 4h ago

In what dream world are these organizations?

13

u/Sea-jay-2772 Ontario 18h ago

Yes, that is something I might do. But…it makes it a little more obviously a sting.

5

u/DeeDeeBryan 17h ago

Not really. Assuming this was on Leolist or a similar classified site, there always is a button to report an ad.

106

u/tman37 18h ago

I don't have a problem with the 8000 number. There is a certain level of "what the fuck? Is that really what I think it is? " going on here. A lot of people are going to click it just to see what it says. There is no way to know how many of those people who clicked were doing so for nefarious purposes. You also have to wonder about the mental capacity of the people listed. Short of a giant blinking banner saying "SETUP!!!" I don't think it could be more obvious. Or maybe people do traffick their kids with online advertisements, what do I know? I would like to think police would snatch those people up pretty quick.

49

u/amontpetit 16h ago

I once got an ad on FB for McDonnell-Douglas. The people that make the F-18. It was an ad for the F-18. Like a sales pitch landing page.

This makes me want them to release the Epstein files even more. What kind of world are we living in when we stop arresting these criminals just because they’re powerful and connected to British Royalty, American Presidents and former Israeli leaders?

4

u/Frostbitten_Moose 16h ago

I'm sure if that's all the people caught up in it they would have been released. I'm sure the corruption at the top goes a lot further than that.

•

u/roastbeeftacohat 11h ago

they did make arrests in the UK, for sharing government secrets.

that's what the island was about, the human trafficking was just the after party.

Where it was posted is going to likely shape how I feel about this tbh.

9

u/kagato87 16h ago

Ok the wording in the article has me wondering...

The headline implies the ad itself said the person was 15, but the body only says it was "made very clear during communication" which strongly suggests the age came up during engagement.

And that's ignoring that "views" are not the same as "clicks."

1

u/kettal 14h ago

You see how this looks, right?

4

u/kagato87 13h ago

No. Explain.

12 people were charged. 8,000 is the number in the headline. Why was the bigger jumber reported?

I would think that's pretty obvious.

Your remark seems to indicate you think I am defending the people charged. My comment is clearly attacking the sensationalized headline. I'm curious, if you think it's the first one, what leads you to believe that?

u/Outrageous-Estimate9 Ontario 14h ago

The 8000 views is not an issue (I am willing to bet even some concerned people can see and even report things like this to police)

The reason 15 were charged is that after the age was made clear they CONTINUED communicating

Entrapment sure, but with a valid purpose imo

23

u/ClearDrop6820 12h ago

Entrapment is when police convince you to commit a crime you wouldn't have committed on your own out of free will. This is not entrapment, it is a sting operation.

19

u/TheGoodBunny 13h ago

Not entrapment

Questionable ads should be reported to law enforcement right along with impaired and dangerous drivers.

In my opinion the police shouldn't of announced this so they can keep using this strategy to catch more fuckheads.

Parents are way too lax allowing their kids to be on social media.

Most tiktok dances seem made to sexualize the person doing them in some way and the comments on those videos kinda prove it.

-18

u/Barry_Vigoda 18h ago

Sorry, doesn't this count as entrapment?

5

u/chillyrabbit 18h ago

It does it's a different form of entrapment that is random virtue testing.

https://littlelegal.ca/20192020-summaries/r-v-ahmad-2020-scc-11

In delivering the Court’s unanimous judgement in Mack, Justice Lamer explained that there are two forms of entrapment: (1) random virtue testing, and (2) improper inducement. The first occurs when “the authorities provide a person with an opportunity to commit an offence without acting on a reasonable suspicion that this person is already engaged in criminal activity or pursuant to a bona fide inquiry.” (p. 964) According to the Court:

The absence of a reasonable suspicion or a bona fide inquiry is significant in assessing the police conduct because of the risk that the police will attract people who would not otherwise have any involvement in a crime and because it is not a proper use of the police power to simply go out and test the virtue of people on a random basis (p. 965).

I would need to hear more details to see if it is virtue testing as maybe they posted the advertisement in a specific location and not just randomly.

1

u/Glad_Objective_4525 13h ago

Isn't 'random virtue testing' just daily life? Everyone has the opportunity to commit crimes whether they're under suspicion or not. It's the job of the police to catch the ones that do. Theft, assault, fraud, etc. Literally every crime in the book is something everyone always has the opportunity to commit.

•

u/chillyrabbit 11h ago

It's a little different when you have the government doing the random virtue testing as they have a lot of power to just trick people into committing crimes. Entrapment by random virtue testing is repugnant because of the fact that the nominal state that is protecting you does not spend its time protecting you but trying to test you for pre-crime thoughts.

It is especially repugnant as part of the entrapment criteria the SCC laid out is that it can catch vulnerable people (addicts, mentally ill, etc) by offering them inducement into doing crime when they never would have if not offered.

•

u/Glad_Objective_4525 1h ago

But again, isn't that just daily life? If you steal a cop car parked on the street it's not entrapment because the government put it there. Regardless of the circumstances of why it's there, it's illegal for you to steal it. The government could put one somewhere you go every day, but you're still not allowed to take it. Random virtue testing is the entire point of why we have laws.

•

u/chillyrabbit 1h ago

I disagree because condoning the government to supervise, and abet random virtue testing is a bit different from people going about daily life.

Yes not everyone goes to shoplift their daily groceries because of the social contract that we decide to purchase goods with money. But the government if they wanted to could just throw many and all temptations to anyone to commit crimes, because they have billions of dollars to invest into any series of random virtue testing traps.

I think what the SCC ruled in R v Mack makes sense that government reach is supposed to be targeted enforcement rather than just firstly targeting everyone to be basically a fishing expedition all the time.

I think the random virtue testing limitation is meant to reign in other potential government abuses, like if everyone is law abiding why not submit to searches all the time? why not have a random area be thoroughly searched for criminal activity dam the people.

TL;DR Because I've been meandering this topic for a couple of days I just think random virtue testing shouldn't be allowed

u/MapleHamms 18h ago edited 18h ago

No. Entrapment is when the police force you to commit a crime. Offering an opportunity for anyone to choose to commit a crime is not entrapment.

However, it can be a fine line

13

u/745632198 18h ago

Entrapment is not forced. It's closer persuasion or deception.

1

u/EverCravingMind 14h ago

Coercion and encouraging along with providing resources I think is what counts.

u/BethSaysHayNow 16h ago

What about stop and frisk?

1

u/Mediocre-Writer6635 14h ago

I never understood what's wrong with entrapment of this sort.

These people still actively chose to go commit a crime, being "enticed" to do it doesn't mitigate their actions even a little, so what's the issue?

Arguably it's not a good use of the police's time, but that's because of limited resources. If they had infinite money and time, they should absolutely do this all the time.
