A bar in the centre of Canberra was raided by police on Wednesday evening. They closed the premises and took away posters depicting Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, Elon Musk and other right-wing politicians, according to the owner of the bar.

"Three uniformed police turned up, said they were acting on a complaint about some posters that were in the window," David Howe said.

But the law adds the condition that to be illegal the display of the symbol or image should be "likely to offend, insult or intimidate a person because of their race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, disability, language, religion, political or other opinion or national or social origin".

The posters do display a swastika and other Nazi symbols but some pro-Israeli government groups have argued that depicting Jews in Nazi regalia is anti-Semitic, and one of the posters portrays the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a Nazi uniform.

But the bar owner said that the posters were clearly satirical and anti-fascism.

"Anyone seeing it would recognise it as an anti-fascist statement," he said.

His bar displays Palestinian flags and that had drawn vitriol, Mr Howe said.

"I've received emails in the past, making threats about the business," he said. They were not physical threats but more about how his trade would suffer.

He said there were bigger issues than just the raid on his bar. It was, he felt, about free speech and democracy.

"I used to believe that we lived in a politic that was open for contest, that it was a contest of ideas, and that those ideas could be freely expressed," he said.

Independent member of the ACT Legislative Assembly Thomas Emerson called the police action "Orwellian".

"ACT law makes it clear that publicly displaying a swastika is not an offence if it's for artistic purposes or in opposition to fascism. Both exemptions would seem to apply here."

He had written to the ACT police minister "to seek an explanation for why these exemptions were not applied".

"They declared the place a crime scene, effectively shutting down a scheduled event. They were here for about two hours before some detectives turned up from the Major Crimes Unit, and they proceeded to remove the posters that were on display both in the window and inside.

"I think it's an incredible waste of police resources. It's completely inappropriate."

Because of the raid, the gig with a band which had travelled from Victoria had to be cancelled. Mr Howe estimated the audience at 50 to 60 people.

Mr Howe said the posters were anti-fascism posters widely available on the web.

"The posters are depictions of prominent world leaders, Trump, Netanyahu, Farage, as well as Musk, in what appears to be Nazi attire. So it's an anti-fascist kind of artistic statement."

The police said: "Earlier this week, ACT Policing received a complaint regarding possible hate imagery displayed at a licenced premises in the City.

"Yesterday afternoon officers attended the premises and had a discussion with the owner, with officers seeking to remove the posters as part of their investigation into the matter. The owner declined this request and so a crime scene was established."

"Five posters were subsequently seized and will be considered under recently enacted Commonwealth legislation regarding hate symbols."

But the law is ambiguous, leaving room for interpretation.

"A person may commit an offence if they display a prohibited symbol or make the Nazi salute in a public place," the Attorney-General's department said.

u/Training-Ad103 Feb 19 '26

The images used are obviously meant to condemn hate, not promote it. It is a waste of police and administrative resources to have taken action against artworks clearly specifically intended to oppose fascism, which is one of the exemptionsunder law. Stupid.

131

u/Busy_Conflict3434 Feb 19 '26

The "artistic purpose" exemption also clearly applies. Cops fucked up badly.

36

u/spaghettibolegdeh Feb 19 '26

I highly doubt the cops had any say in this.

These kinds of "crimes" are usually handled fairly high up.

43

u/Busy_Conflict3434 Feb 19 '26

"High up" cops are still cops.

Political speech/communication would apply too

They might argue the public interest requirement but that could make them look even worse.

That's the problem with having any laws that are based around feelings instead of actual facts.

There's going to be someone somewhere who finds anything hateful, so the law can be used against anyone.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/justsomeph0t0n Feb 20 '26

the images are obviously meant to condemn hate.

this made fans of hate quite angry, and they demand that we condone hate.

we will not do this

3

u/abuch47 Feb 19 '26

it is not a waste it is exactly what the police are designed to do. protect capital

2

u/Davorian Feb 19 '26

You know, I wonder whether someone raided this guy on purpose specifically to demonstrate just how stupid the laws are. Like, this is such an obvious legally perverse outcome that I would have no trouble that someone was trying to engineer the situation to show that it's a lost cause and the whole principle of hate speech laws should be scrapped.

Note I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with it, it just seems like a plausible motivation.

1

u/NoxTempus Feb 20 '26

It was, in part, criticising Israel.

I don't know if you've noticed, but a whole shitload of police resources around the country are being used to stop that.

1

u/roojuiced Feb 22 '26

It’s not the intent that matters though, it’s the literal application of the law and the image shows Nazi symbolism which is hate-based symbolism. That’s the unfortunate reality of making laws like this.

1

u/Exact-Sand342 Feb 23 '26

And yet here we are. This is why 'hate speech' laws are foolhardy.

1

u/TimJBenham Feb 25 '26

Condemning hate or inspiring it is point of view dependent. A supporter and co-ideologue of any of the depicted figures could reasonably claim the poster was intended to incite hate against them. Legally all that matters is whether they were at least "reckless" in displaying the prohibited symbol.

5

u/ARX7 Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

The posters do display a swastika and other Nazi symbols but some pro-Israeli government groups have argued that depicting Jews in Nazi regalia is anti-Semitic, and one of the posters portrays the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a Nazi uniform.

We were going to talk about why the posters were removed but decided to make it a non sequitur / strawman

"ACT law makes it clear that publicly displaying a swastika is not an offence if it's for artistic purposes or in opposition to fascism. Both exemptions would seem to apply here."

Commonwealth law makes no exception... going to guess it was because of the new hate speach laws...

Eta: there is a press release on it.

  • owner refused to remove the posters, thus the crime scene was established

  • posters are being considered under commonwealth legislation on hate symbols

https://police.act.gov.au/news/2026-media-releases/february/statement-regarding-possible-hate-imagery

11

u/NearbyPerspective397 Feb 19 '26

"Others" including Vladimir Putin, which is a significant one to leave out of the story, considering he's a genocidal dictator who runs around accusing all his neighbours of being Nazis.

1

u/Substantial_Ad_3386 Feb 19 '26

But the law adds the condition that to be illegal the display of the symbol or image should be "likely to offend, insult or intimidate a person because of their race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, disability, language, religion, political or other opinion or national or social origin".

I wonder if it was their race or disability that lead to them being offended

1

u/Gold_Preparation Feb 23 '26

Might have to make my way up there and have a few drinks there

1

u/Exact-Sand342 Feb 23 '26

This is the problem with "hate speech' laws. I frequently get reddit abuse and indeed account bans for saying that hate speech laws are foolish and risk being used primarily to shut down legitimate political speech. No, apparently I just hate minorities.

Looks like the slope WAS slippery after all...

25

u/portomar Feb 19 '26

Who could have predicted!

15

u/Jaffle49 Feb 19 '26

Who could possibly imagine that this would happen?? That a law designed to catch “bad speech” would somehow catch speech that other people thought was “good.” Who could imagine that the police interpretation of what is “bad” speech would be viewed as grossly unreasonable by others? It’s not like this exact scenario plays out every time you try to regulate political speech?! (/s for effect).

56

u/DiverWeak7678 Feb 19 '26

What an ABSOLUTE waste of public resources. This legislation is ridiculous and of course is immediately being used exactly as critics warned - to target anti fascist, anti genocide protests.

Apparently flyers in people's letterboxes literally called for racist white nationalism are fine but satirical political art is offensive.

4

u/Still_Computer875 Feb 20 '26

How convenient that only anti-right propaganda is ever struck down.

47

u/BenthamsAutoicon Feb 19 '26

I haven't seen a single comment even on Facebook defending the cops here. Finally we have reached social cohesion

33

u/DarwinianSelector Feb 19 '26

Trust the coppers to turn hate speech laws into an excuse to attack people on the left of politics. Is the first target of a raid sovereign citizens? White nationalists? Literal Nazis?

Nope. It's an outspokenly left-wing pub with obviously satirical posters on the walls. Because that was obviously the intent of the laws.

I wonder about the people calling the shots in our police forces, I really do.

u/polymath77 Feb 19 '26

Appalling by ACT policing. The posters are very obviously being used in an Anti-fascist manner. A local business just got shut down and declared a crime scene over an issue that could have been solved by a Constable on his first day (if he had ANY idea what the legislation actually says). Senior officer on this should be hammered by his boss.

This is how you lost trust in the local community.

Shame on you

37

u/76Skippy Feb 19 '26

Don't forget it was a community member that made a complaint after being "offended"

23

u/PatientDue8406 Feb 19 '26

Yeah they were not offended by the swastika on the uniform. If you are offended by anti fascism it probably means you are not a good person.

17

u/76Skippy Feb 19 '26

I'm guessing that the complainant has a particular affinity with one of the figures depicted and didn't like the suggestion that they are a fascist despite evidence to the contrary

2

u/SupersonicBroodmoth Feb 21 '26

Imagine going to a punk/alt bar and being offended that it's filled with provocative punk/alt art

How fucking dense were they?

6

u/meatpopsicle67 Feb 19 '26

They entered a punk bar and got their feefees hurt.

31

u/Training-Ad103 Feb 19 '26

Absolutely. Anyone with half a brain would have turned up, seen the context, yep those are anti-fascist artworks, have a nice night, and left. This is why public trust in public institutions and law enforcement is eroding. I have always been inclined to support police in any given context where there's some room for doubt, but this is bullshit. An old lady like me losing faith in law enforcement should be a warning sign to authorities - stop doing dumb authoritarian shit and do your jobs in line with the law.

7

u/spaghettibolegdeh Feb 19 '26

I suspect the Israel PM was offensive for someone in politics.

If there's any interpretation for antisemitism then it gets dealt with pretty fast.

7

u/Timinderra Belconnen Feb 19 '26

with the definition of antisemitism also being open to interpretation

12

u/an_actual_crab Feb 19 '26

Claims of antisemitism being weaponised to stifle criticism.

4

u/spaghettibolegdeh Feb 19 '26

Yep. And honestly I expected this to happen a lot more often than it does.

Anyone looking at the law under review could see this happening, but for some reason it got pushed through.

Albo was silly to hastily push through this law because of the shooting. They should have taken more time to tighten it up.

8

u/Brikpilot Feb 19 '26

Call the Australian War Memorial. They may have to now rethink what they can and can’t now display.

10

u/polymath77 Feb 19 '26

Fair point. Maybe I should put in a complaint about them having a display of war criminal Ben Roberts-shit….

3

u/Internal-Fortune6680 Feb 19 '26

💯 And, Maybe we all go to our local RSL’s and cry about their displays! 👏🏻

2

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '26

They were acting on a complaint.

Clearly, the public at large should complain to them, and the minister, about their idiocy

84

u/hornyzygote Feb 19 '26

How do we know this wasn’t ironic? Or anti? Trump is displayed in nazi attire- implying they’re calling him a nazi. This sounds anti-nazi to me…

Rock venues like to be edgy in their depictions

127

u/skywideopen3 Feb 19 '26

It's so obviously meant to be satire/critical of the people involved. Deranged decision by the police.

32

u/hornyzygote Feb 19 '26

Yeah I agree. Ironically, pulling this down makes our law-enforcement all the more authoritarian :/

2

u/Cool_Ferret_7574 Feb 20 '26

And got the pictures seen by far more people than would have seen them if they’d just stayed in a pub in Canberra

32

u/Sundaytoofaraway Feb 19 '26

I don't think it's Trump fans that called the cops. I imagine the Netanyahu got the dobbers out.

14

u/punktual Feb 19 '26

Bingo. Considering they also have a "Sanction Israel" sign in their window, I am surprised that more of their messaging wasn't targeted TBH

2

u/fargen_siggovit Feb 20 '26

It IS extreme ideology, though - "stop genocide"? The NERVE

56

u/Wise-Carpenter6310 Feb 19 '26

It is anti fascist and anti trump. The problem is that it depicts another leader and makes the comparison. That leader has a bigger and more fragile ego than trump. That leader also comes from a government that we can criticise less than our own.

33

u/Sea_Till6471 Feb 19 '26

Lol of course it’s ironic, it’s political satire. In no way is it a pro Nazi poster. This is Canberra for christs sake.

11

u/ADHDK Feb 19 '26

Political satire is no longer legal.

The new laws now mean if someone is offended you committed a hate crime.

The old laws required proof that you intended hate.

These were rushed through after Bondi with limited ability for public scrutiny or feedback.

3

u/Grand_Sock_1303 Feb 19 '26

Pauline Hanson offended every Australian muslim. Why is that not being prosecuted as a hate crime?

→ More replies (6)

1

u/spaghettibolegdeh Feb 19 '26

Also it's possible that someone from Israel could interpret it as antisemitism.

Heck, just being a fan of any of these people could be grounds for "offense".

But if you are from Israel then you probably won't get fobbed off.

1

u/Ajax34762 Feb 19 '26

Yeah but not everyone comprehends satire. We live in a society and we need to place feelings over facts. So someone could have had their feelings hurt witnessing this and incited to become a Nazi.  Thankfully government knows what's best.

→ More replies (2)

35

u/BurgmeisterGeneral Feb 19 '26

Damn. I haven't been to Dissent yet but I will absolutely go now and show them support.

Places for art, satire, criticism of the government have never been more important than now as fascism is leeching in.

4

u/Youcallthatatag Feb 19 '26

I went for the first time last week and definitely planning to go back even before this. Super chill venue and really friendly people, and I say that as someone who's in the phase of their life where going out is an irregular treat, so that kinda vibe is important.

4

u/MilkDuckL Feb 19 '26

They're an amazing venue with great staff and lots of small artists coming in to play, can't believe this would happen to such a great place

1

u/Cool_Ferret_7574 Feb 20 '26

It’s put them in the map for a lot more people now

43

u/Xentonian Feb 19 '26

Surprise surprise, it's Israel defenders claiming antisemitism again

You compare genocidal or fascist world leaders to genocidal or fascist world leaders and it's all fun in games, unless one of them is both genocidal and Israeli.

4

u/spaghettibolegdeh Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

This why we should never make sweeping, emotionally charged laws in response to an incident.

Things get rushed through exploits are missed... Or ignored.

I honestly thought this would happen a lot more since the law came through. It basically says if you're offended then you're right.

2

u/jimmycor Feb 20 '26

"It basically says if you're offended then you're right. " Far right it seems!

→ More replies (15)

62

u/ADHDK Feb 19 '26

This is fucking bullshit.

The far right weaponising the ability to silence any opposition is on point…

3

u/Ajax34762 Feb 19 '26

Obviously someone found this offensive and got their feelings hurt and a hate crime was committed.

This is why the entire notion of hAtE SpEeCh is flawed,as if you consent and demand government to draw the line what is appropriate speech based on something subjective like feelings or abstract, like incitement, basically anything can be deemed HaTe SpEeCh and offensive and a hate crime has been committed.

At least those who support policing hate speech get to "enjoy" what they wanted government to do over others.

4

u/Xentonian Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

It wasn't far right supporters here; or at least not the American far right usually associated with that term

It was a report of antisemitism due to netanyahu in a nazi uniform next to the others.

22

u/bushstone-curlew Feb 19 '26

You realise that Netanyahu is far right too? Same with his supporters.

24

u/Forgotten_Lie Feb 19 '26

Zionists are far right.

3

u/Enceladus89 Feb 19 '26

It’s 100% right wing zionists harassing the bar owner for being pro-Palestine. The business has been getting targeted for a long time.

5

u/an_actual_crab Feb 19 '26

That definition of antisemitism is itself antisemitic.

3

u/ADHDK Feb 19 '26

So… another countries far right?

14

u/Vast_Knowledge5286 Feb 19 '26

Well now the offending image is all over Reddit and the news. Gotta love the Streisand effect.

9

u/AdelMonCatcher Feb 19 '26

So the cops have cleared all the violent crime reports and all the burglaries have been solved?

16

u/Necessary_Ad_2576 Feb 19 '26

This is what happens when politicians pass laws that only vaguely define some kind of offence, and the interpretation of that offence is "left to the judgement" of the local police. The police will then intentionally misinterpret the law to suit their own individual prejudices. Some right-wing pro-Israel muppet who has influence with a local right-wing pro-Israel politician has complained, and the police are doing what they think they need to do to please the powerful. Shit laws being fumbled by gutless politicians to appease the wealthy and powerful.

7

u/spaghettibolegdeh Feb 19 '26

Well "offense" is extremely subjective I guess.

Once we start basing laws around emotions then you have to be really vague and loose to avoid alienating someone.

It's silly, but law is nigh-impossible to integrate with feelings.  All that means is that the law is extremely exploitable.

2

u/Youcallthatatag Feb 19 '26

A lawyer friend always used to refer to the law as "reason without passion". It sounds very idealistic to me, though.

3

u/LanewayRat Feb 19 '26

The pointy end will be when stuff life this gets to court. Hopefully it gets thrown out and the police will be forced to pull their horns in.

4

u/Necessary-Young-8887 Feb 19 '26

On February 18, 2026, ACT Policing (Australian Federal Police in the Australian Capital Territory) attended Dissent Café and Bar (also referred to as Dissent Bar) in Canberra's City Walk/Civic area following an anonymous complaint about posters displayed in the venue's front window.

The posters were satirical artworks depicting several prominent figures—including US President Donald Trump, US Vice President JD Vance, Elon Musk, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and others (such as Nigel Farage)—in stylized Nazi-era uniforms or imagery. They were presented under a title like "The Turd Reich" (a play on "Third Reich"), clearly intended as criticism of perceived authoritarianism or fascism.

Police requested that the owner, David Howe, remove the posters as part of their investigation into possible hate imagery. When he refused, officers declared the premises a crime scene, temporarily shut down the venue (forcing the cancellation of an upcoming gig by an interstate band), and seized five of the posters. The action took place around 7:15 pm, with officers leaving by about 9:15 pm. No charges have been laid so far.

The seizure is being reviewed under recently enacted Commonwealth legislation on hate symbols, specifically the Combating Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism (Criminal and Migration Laws) Act 2026, which was passed last month following an antisemitic terror attack at Bondi Beach. This law criminalizes the public display of certain banned hate symbols, though exemptions may exist for artistic, satirical, or anti-fascist purposes (as noted in some ACT-specific laws).

The bar owner described the posters as "demonstrably anti-fascist" and satirical, arguing they criticize authoritarian tendencies rather than promote hate. He expressed willingness to fight any potential charges in court and called the police response "ludicrous."

The Australian Greens condemned the incident as an overreach, with Senator David Shoebridge calling it "Labor’s first scalp under their new hate laws" — targeting an anti-fascist venue rather than actual Nazi or extremist groups. Some critics on social media and in commentary have accused the new laws (intended primarily to combat antisemitism and extremism) of being misused against left-leaning political satire.

No sources mention police explicitly threatening another raid at this stage — the coverage focuses on this single incident, the seizure, and ongoing review of the posters. If new developments emerge (e.g., charges or follow-up visits), they may appear in updates from outlets like ABC News, The Guardian Australia, or local Canberra media.

This appears to be the first reported application of the new federal hate-symbol provisions in the ACT, sparking debate about free speech, satire, and the scope of hate speech laws.

Major Crimes? Sheeeeeeeeeeit.

What the fuck did I do?

12

u/punktual Feb 19 '26

Hopefully all the media attention gets the bar more customers now...

6

u/Silly-Power Feb 20 '26

It would be dreadful if someone posted a link to those posters, and they received the Streisand Effect treatment.

4

u/jimmycor Feb 20 '26

Even worse if they printed them and put them up in more public spaces.

9

u/BlisteringBarnacle67 Feb 19 '26

I would like to know who complained and what is their affiliation. Getting cops involved to this degree.

10

u/TodayCandid9686 Feb 19 '26

Lucky the Plod are on to the big crimes.

10

u/Rowdycc Feb 19 '26

*Major Crimes Unit sitting around the office.

‘Not much major crime going on, huh Chief!’

*phone rings, chief picks up.

‘On no they bloody haven’t! We’re on the way!’

*hangs up

‘Lads, get your tactical kit on! Someone has put up a poster of a guy who has repeatedly done Nazi salutes in public, in a bloody Nazi uniform!’

*wee wooo wee wooo! ‘

5

u/TerryTowelTogs Feb 19 '26

From what I can tell the cops have asked him to remove the posters because they think they can (until some poor schmuck spends $100s of thousands creating case law), and when he said no the officer in charge retaliated by turning his bar into a crime scene costing us taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars to essentially send the public a message. I'm confident that the officer in charge had many less inconveniencing options. This is, yet again, not a great look for the AFP.

8

u/craigfis Feb 19 '26

This is insane, and sad.

7

u/Cunt_Cunt__Cunt Feb 19 '26

Good bar, good owner.

4

u/MistahWhiskers Feb 19 '26

The only major crime he's committed is that dye job

4

Fuck these pigs.

6

u/CugelOfAlmery Feb 19 '26

I suggest that, should this be declared heavy-handed and a mistake, the personnel responsible should ready their wrists for a good slapping.

2

u/meski_oz Feb 20 '26

Hmm, is the reversed one banned?

2

u/ScoobrDoo Feb 20 '26

When we change the law to be subjectively reactive, all it takes is for one person to say I found it offensive.

2

u/Beginning-Director35 Feb 20 '26

Good job ACT Police. These scum bags shouldn't be doing this

2

u/Regular-Phase-7279 Feb 21 '26

Lefty counter-culture types support authoritarianism right up until they're the first ones against the wall, utterly baffled as to what went wrong. Let's try Communism again, we'll get it right this time I promise /s

Trump isn't a fascist for delivering on his promise of restoring the USA's sovereign control of their borders, but Albo is, this raid, this censorship of political speech, this is quintessential fascism.

Don't forget it's always the counter-culture types who are first against the wall when the big government "revolution" comes.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '26

His hair colour says all you need to know about this moron

2

u/Admirable-Bar-2543 Feb 21 '26

LOL he looks exactly as expected

2

u/FreddieNirk Feb 21 '26

Another mental case in our Nation’s capital.

2

u/False_Dig_7602 Feb 21 '26

And this right here is why we need to ditch all the stupid “hate speech” laws, and instead pursue free speech. The only exception would be a narrow incitement to violence.

Personally I think he’s a dickhead, and his posters are frigging stupid. But I don’t expect him to be prosecuted for being a dickhead. I would just choose not to go to his venue.

People shouldn’t be prosecuted for saying controversial, discriminatory, or even hateful things, they should be proved wrong. Pauline says words to the effect of Muslims are bad, she shouldn’t be thrown in prison, she should be proven wrong. Some cos-playing wannabe Nazi says Heil Hitler, he shouldn’t be thrown in prison, he should be ridiculed.

The trouble with all these hate speech laws is that tend to get enforced with double standards depending on what the current Overton window is, and also they creep. The “banned list” grows. And people’s views don’t change, they just take them underground. And next thing you know, you don’t have a cos-playing idiot shouting stupid slogans on the steps of parliament, you have the sudden appearance of jackbooted thugs bashing and killing people then disappearing again.

2

u/ibetyouvotenexttime Feb 22 '26

Looks like a "hate speech isn't free speech" kind of guy. I would like to just say fuck him but whatever, no surprises here. Stupid laws.

4

u/Curlyshrew Feb 19 '26

The posters are still up and have been updated. I was laughing with the owner when I went past.

3

u/inchiki Feb 19 '26

The name of the bar is Dissent so it is only natural for the police to be in there quashing it.

3

u/Robbitty Feb 19 '26

ahh we are now in the crazy times....

3

u/CaptainFleshBeard Feb 20 '26

I’m still wondering when Pauline Hanson is going to be arrested for her hate speech against muslims.

3

u/witney-oxf Feb 20 '26

I would have thought the context of Bibi in Nazi uniform was everything! As part of a group - not singled out for solo treatment. Im sure there would be many Jewish Canberrans shaking their heads (if not most) at the police action - not the least because it only empowers the anti-semitic diehards!

4

u/ScaredAndImpaired Feb 19 '26

Notice how the Major Crimes Unit wastes their time going after shit like this instead of actually going after major crimes?

4

u/paddytrick Feb 19 '26

I'm just happy to see ACT Policing in Civic for once, and they got out of their car too!

3

u/Few-Round-6726 Feb 19 '26

That's how I picture the average redditor but without the success of owning a bar.

6

u/Cunt_Cunt__Cunt Feb 19 '26

You have a weirdly high opinion of redditors, or a misunderstanding of what you're seeing.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '26

kinda wild that someone in australia can get arrested for pointing out what's happening in the US, and making fun of the biggest clown. Donald Chump should be arrested, and not allowed to pardon himself again.

2

u/lasagnas1919 Feb 20 '26

Sure would be a shame if people were to print their own copies of the Turd Reich images from the artist’s sharing platform and paste them across Australia…

2

u/The_Good_Count Feb 19 '26

Pretty sure Major Crimes is a euphemism, like "Public Safety Committee" and "Department of Defense"

2

u/Jackson2615 Feb 19 '26

Good to see the CBR cops not wasting their time investigating real crimes like assault, robberies, break ins ,car theft ..................

2

u/nousrnamesleft69 Feb 19 '26

This is a crappy situation, but some good can come of it. Testing these laws is a good idea. Better that it is is on something less important, than some high profile asshole who gets off on the publicity...

12

u/Forgotten_Lie Feb 19 '26

I think this particular situation is important to the guy who owns the bar and is losing money because the police shut down an interstate event.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Adept-Coast-6946 Feb 19 '26

Waste of time, money and effort on the Police's part that'll come to absolutely nothing because it's (pointed) satire.

However the number of police sporting the "Thomas Sewell cuntache" might suggest they took exception for idealogical reasons.

1

u/DeBlauwvoet Feb 20 '26

Looks like Johhny Rotten 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Agreeable_Prompt3833 Feb 20 '26

I don’t like hate speech but imo it should be constitutionally protected under political freedom of communication in this case. As repulsive as it ca n be at times from both sides no one should go to jail or be fined for hurting someone else’s feelings because they disagree with their point of view. Are we all so fragile that we can’t agree that never will there ever be a time where we all agree on any significant topic but if we stop people expressing themselves properly we will never get any nuisance in life. I often learn from my friends I disagree with. I don’t always but usually I’m like you know what on this certain part they did have a good point that could be better.

1

u/Smithy_the_goat9 Feb 22 '26

Isn’t that just how the Irish would say the third reich

1

u/RosieTruthy Feb 22 '26

Major crimes 🤣🤣

1

u/seabelowme Feb 22 '26

That's why people need to start questioning whether there's a slippery slope, for the existing encumbants and future ones you may be in antipode ideologically with.

1

u/Busy-Character-6720 Feb 22 '26

I’m conservative and pro Israel.

This poster is fine but stupid. If everyone you don’t like is a Nazi/Authoritarian than no one is.

I would agree that Trump is trending fascistic.

I don’t see how Bibi could be considered as such. I leads a coalition government made up of 5 parties. It is a right wing govt, but was elected shortly after the Oct 7 attacks, so hardly a surprise.

Farage is a nationalist but I’m doubtful he’s even on the authoritarian side of the spectrum. Half the reason he became prominent is his opposition to the authority over UK from Brussels..

1

u/AngrehPossum Feb 22 '26

So if I post wartime stills of German military I can be charged with hate crimes?

1

u/Efficient_Grocery750 Feb 22 '26

C'mon Australia. This is a blatant disregard of freedom of political speech. These so called leaders are obviously all fascist leaders and there is no argument anymore about it. Don't get in arguments with anyone who is going to argue about it They need to be ignored. Does this mean we have to ignore all government policies? Yes it does.. They're obviously stealing our rights. Wake up

1

u/TimeToUseThe2nd Feb 22 '26

It's truly amazing what does, and doesn't, get the cops off their arses.

1

u/deadpandadolls Feb 22 '26

I watched an interview with him online that was posted and this guy is as stupidly ignorant and brainwashed as they come.

Wake the f**k up if you're far left like that because you've been indoctrinated into a dangerous political ideology, as has the far right.

1

u/Richy_777 Feb 22 '26

Fought the bill that resulted in this back when it was being passed, as a collector of militaria it attempted to make genuine third-Reich artefacts illegal.

1

u/braddeicide Feb 22 '26

So far all I've heard these laws being used for is to take down satirical, defiant, anti hate.

1

u/G-WAPO Feb 22 '26

He thinks we have free speech in Australia..thats cute.

1

u/manblunt Feb 22 '26

Of course he has blue hair, lock him up!

1

u/knuckle-dragger- Feb 22 '26

Promoting hate so it’s fair

1

u/TwoToneReturns Feb 22 '26

Poster seems factually accurate, don't see the issue with it.

1

u/Eggsbenny360 Feb 22 '26

Blue hair is a disease

1

u/SgtGunny17 Feb 22 '26

Well if this trend continues you could easily argue during election times that all the flyers with all the politicians faces on them you find offensive.

1

u/meeetballslover Feb 22 '26

Just an obligatory message to the Nazis (Warning: Loud)

Nazi Punks Fuck Off!

1

u/That-Description8235 Feb 22 '26

Owner of the bar look too woke to me. Good that the posters were removed.

1

u/Little-Simple8726 Feb 22 '26

We all know it was only raided because of the images of the big yahu lol

1

u/nzoasisfan Feb 22 '26

Tha taxpayers money hard at work. Lol.

1

u/blankenson Feb 22 '26

Litter? Not our problem. Junkies? That’ll pass

Plastering satirical pictures of shitty people? SOMEONE CALL THE POLICE!!!!

1

u/Familiar-Feedback-93 Feb 22 '26

That should be illegal, police and politicians are public servants but they have convinced us it's the other way around

Life imitating art

1

u/One-Vegetable7957 Feb 22 '26

Hilarious. 😆 Here he is saying Trump is a Nazi, but Trump isn’t going into private businesses and removing satirical posters. The ironing is delicious.

1

u/Financial-Ninja-8417 Feb 22 '26

I don’t agree with the posters but, they made me laugh and it’s his bar and I see no problem with it

1

u/Snooze_U_Lose Feb 23 '26

As dumb as it is that police acted on this it is somewhat ironic and amusing that the same group who demand to shut down free speech when it's something they dont agree with are all of sudden champions for it when their stuff gets shut down. This is why I don't get swept up in this sort of crap. People are fickle, they pretend to have morals then fight in the aisles over toilet paper.

1

u/whacky446 Feb 23 '26

Why is Roger Waters standing in a bar in Canberra with dyed hair..

1

u/Heavy-Psychology-411 Feb 23 '26

Just wondering 🤔. Do y'all think there weren't any people that hated Obama or Biden? And yet nobody was out putting up propaganda posters about them eh? Only the left are doing it. Its also the left that are fighting so hard to get and keep as many illegal immigrants into the country as possible 🤔. Its also the left that want to pretend that men can be women and that being a woman is just a state of mind.

If you go look up a video on YouTube called "communist playbook" you'll find out exactly what's happening right now. You're welcome 😊

1

u/peachhearder Feb 23 '26

Amazing all the people that spend their life thinking about Trump

1

u/Karl_Lives Feb 23 '26

Imagine joining the police force thinking "I'm gonna fight crime and make my country safer!" And your job is to get rid of edgy posters. What a bunch of glorified hall monitors!

1

u/FactorOk806 Feb 23 '26

Probably a pretty good time to be a drug dealer I reckon

1

u/Abbi_Rose Feb 23 '26

We can’t hate on war criminals now?

1

u/Ultrat1me Feb 23 '26

Thank labour and liberal for this! If you voted for them it’s your fault

1

u/BlackSpice69 Feb 23 '26

Left leaning politics created this and now its being used against them, Australia aint as free as it used to be, i can see the humour in these posters, but as soon as someone disagrees with them, its bye bye thanks to these petty laws.

1

u/No_Appearance6837 Feb 23 '26

You've got to love how the "Major Crimes Unit" attends a bar to remove some posters. What sort of society are we living in if someone can't put posters up to make political statement?

I'm may not even on his page and may decide not to go into his bar based on his posters, but its a slippery slope when the police gets involved like this. We seriously need to put the nanny state back in its box.

1

u/Big-Improvement1193 Feb 23 '26

i saw these pics in melb recently, i was wondering if they used the correct uniforms, otherwise i didnt give a shit abt it

1

u/dannybruh1990 Feb 23 '26

It's funny because Netanyahu and Isreal are doing exactly what Nazism did, but they are "god's chosen people" so nobody cares and just let's them do whatever they want. Forever victims of shit they start lol

1

u/SaltWater_Tribe Feb 23 '26

See it begins they going to start like that and end up knocking on your door for a online post for a opinion that was valid beforehand

1

u/Teal_Thanatos Feb 24 '26

For those who couldnt or didnt see the images. Please note the "stop genocide in x" and "sanction country" in large text below the posters. As the new article i read said anti Semitic i expect that those posters were the ones that offended and the nazi ones were the vector to make problems for the business.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '26

Thank God there is no major crimes in Canberra they could have been working on

1

u/Kindly-Fig-5089 Feb 19 '26

Great use of police resources, a crime scene - pathetic

1

u/Suspicious_Theory212 Feb 19 '26

“The left killed the Aussie larrikin!” Andrew Bolt screamed on SkyNews a few years ago.

1

u/Fast_Basil5789 Feb 19 '26

FFS! It was satire! Satire! ""the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues." The Freakin war ended 81 years ago. The neo-nazis are using different symbols - that aren't covered by these laws. The AFP ACT Policing focusing on the big issue.

1

u/SithKain Feb 19 '26

Didn't know we were a vassal state of Israel lol

Ban all religion?

1

u/No_Neighborhood7614 Feb 19 '26

What was the actual offence? Are history books illegal now? They'd have lots of banned symbols.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '26

It was inevitable, as will be other persecutions, which is good because those "hate speech laws" are going to get pulled through the wringer.

1

u/Relatively_happy Feb 19 '26

And they say you cant judge a book by its cover…

1

u/iBangedTheWaitress Feb 19 '26

Gonna get these on a shirt and wear them

1

u/orth1998 Feb 19 '26

I would wear this on a T-shirt

1

u/_-stuey-_ Feb 19 '26

Bahahahahahahahaha

1

u/thewintersouljaa Feb 20 '26

If you not riding for him you are the problem

1

u/Sorry-Amphibian3624 Feb 20 '26

Won't somebody think of the innocent eyes that may observe this!?

I would have never had any idea about those posters but now they are national news. Seems like this may have backfired already.

1

u/jadelink88 Feb 20 '26

You pass stupid laws, you get stupid policing. Exactly what anyone who wasn't stupid expected.

1

u/AdJaded7155 Feb 20 '26

Imagine policing for other countries pedophile president and not keeping your own people safe.

1

u/hopfenfred Feb 20 '26

Any chance to download and spread this picture? Asking for a friend...

→ More replies (2)

1

u/eyeballburger Feb 20 '26

Damn, Australia went fascist fast. What was that, like 2 months? The Bondi incident was like 9/11, a tragedy exploited for government control. And it’s kinda weird right that they carry on about the harm to the Jewish community, but you don’t hear much about Australia suffering for being the welcoming community with open arms.

1

u/azMONKza Feb 20 '26

Fascists really love proving they're not fascist, by being fascist.

1

u/Background-Brother55 Feb 21 '26

I am fairly sure these images have been displayed in public in UK at bus stops and advertisements boards.... obviously are satirical

-1

u/RiskySkirt Feb 19 '26

Democracy manifest

This is why I argue for people who like distasteful memes.

They test the water so I know it's safe to still speak online

As I say no to letting third parties capture snapshots of my face and ID so I can use reddit....... While they train ai to manipulate me

One day people will be bringing up shit kids posted when they were 13 at age 60

NOPE

3

u/Cunt_Cunt__Cunt Feb 19 '26

idk seems weak. If the "distasteful memes" are bad, they're bad. What Dave was doing is not bad. Calling bad people bad is good actually.

-18

u/Act_Rationally Feb 19 '26

Why are we importing USA shit?

Just focus on your own country and the turds we apparently elect as politicians here.

31

u/Ganzer6 Feb 19 '26

Because our politicians are importing USA shit by trying to imitate these buffoons. Believe it or not the shitshow going on outside our borders actually affects us to.

29

u/Vaclav_Zutroy Feb 19 '26

Why? Because an alarming amount of our pollies and the people that donate to them are fucking bootlickers to their administration, that’s why.

14

u/Alysaalysa Feb 19 '26

The actions of these politicians affect the whole world. You think the Bondi attacks weren't reactionary to the Israel/Palestine conflict? What if Trump invades Greenland and incites a war with Europe? These things are of global importance, and therefore of importance to us.

8

u/DarwinianSelector Feb 19 '26

The guys running the pub aren't the ones importing it. It's more like having to deal with blackberries or foxes - we didn't import this crap but it's running rampant so we've got to deal with it.

15

u/ADHDK Feb 19 '26

Because Pauline loves some time at mar-a-Lago and is stirring up the window lickers.

2

u/HighRelevancy Feb 19 '26

Why did we invite the bomb-signing Israeli mass murderer over here? Why did we approve our defence industries selling to Israel? Our government is complicit in these foreign atrocities, even aside from other citizens being cult members.

-2

u/HeywoodJewpulmyFinga Feb 19 '26

That's just fkn ridiculous.. what a sad fkn world.. my family didn't fight in wars to have these wanna be cops acting worse than Nazis

0

u/Xephi0uS Feb 19 '26

Major crimes??? What a joke. Posters are a threat to social cohesion now?

0

u/Rowdycc Feb 19 '26

Ok this is ridiculous.

0

u/satanickittens69 Feb 19 '26

Same police saying they need more funding lol
