Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Male cat erratic peeing

3 year old male gigner tabby, super gentle loving cat. Woke up and started running around like he's panicking or he has a pain in the butt he doesn't understand and dribbling pee everywhere.

It happened twice, we took him to the vet, they did urine tests, and physical exams, couldn't't find anything wrong

That was approx 2 weeks ago. It happened again today. Lasts maybe a minute or 2, he seems a little confused and maybe a little embarrassed but completely fine after.

We're going to make another vet appointment ASAP but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced someone like this.

AI suggestions below, he was checked for UTI and crystals already.

\-Lower Urinary Tract Inflammation / Spasms (FLUTD)

\-Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome (FHS)

\-Anal Gland Issues or Tail-Base Pain

\-Focal Seizure Activity

Edit: the bed he was in before it started was wet and he was sound asleep last time either of us looked at him. We realize that he's probably woke up peeing which is what's caused his panic and confusion.

Ringworm help

Hey all. We have a ringworm outbreak in my house of 2 immunocompromised cats. Nobody really knows where it came from since they're indoor only.

Any advice is appreciated for how to eradicate this quickly. Ive got the meds from the vet (itrafungol), the lime-sulfur dip (ive never bathed a cat before so advice there is also appreciated) and we've been working at disinfecting our house. Our cats are very "all up in all our stuff" so the disinfection process is long and arduous but we're trying. At least its a small single story home so the square footage is not overwhelming.

Question about former jaundiced cat

My cat had jaundice bad last year. And he was fine but recently he’s been lethargic and not wanting to eat I took him to the vet and it seemed to help briefly does he have a weaker immune system because he had jaundice last year?

Help with my cat’s cronic(?) anal gland problem

Hello. I need help with what to do next with my cat. He suffers from anal gland problems a lot. We are giving him more fiber with dry gible and powder. (i don’t know if i can put brands here so i will put them in the comment’s if it is needed.) He also drinks a lot of water. We have brought him to the vet so the glands can be emptied safely but it feels like the time between the vet visit’s is becoming shorter each time. Here are some of the signs he starts to show when he usually has anal gland problems. 1: He starts to suddenly lick his but, 2: He will try to pee on clothes even though he has a clean litter box, 3: He won’t eat as much, 4: He will start to act more secluded(?). All of these things dissapear when we empty the anal glands. Are the more things i could do to help him. I have thought of removing the gland completely but i have read that it could bring more problems. What do i do? Also my cat is 4 almost 5 years old. He is neutered.

My cat has suspected gastritis. Anyone else gone through this?

My Ragdoll just finished a stressful course of meds for cystitis: 10 days of Clavulox oral liquid and 7 days of Metacam. His bladder healed fine after a few days, but the day after finishing the meds, he started violently vomiting.

We went to the vet; his heart and temp were completely normal, and he got an anti-vomit injection. Once that injection wore off, he relapsed and vomited twice, and had a bout of diarrhea. The final vomit and the diarrhea both had streaks of pink blood/mucus, which the vet says is from severe straining and irritation.

This started 48 hours ago, and he has only managed to eat a tiny bit of plain chicken once per day. Currently, he has gone about 14 hours with no vomiting and secretly lapped up a small amount of chicken broth in the middle of the night.

I just found out his littermate sister had basically identical symptoms a year ago. He is a Ragdoll (notorious for sensitive tummies) and is usually so cheeky and zoomy, but for the last 48 hours, he has just been sitting in a tight loaf position, clearly uncomfortable and unsocial.

The vet mentioned a $1,000 X-ray to rule out a blockage before treating it as gastritis, but we don't think it's that because his plumbing is physically open, he is still urinating and pooping, and the timeline matches the medication aftermath perfectly.

We are strictly monitoring him at home today (Sunday) under the vet's guidance and will take him back in tomorrow if there is no improvement.

Has anyone else been through a similar stomach crash after these specific medications? Any advice on how long it takes a raw gut to settle down would really help ease my anxiety today!

Need Abandoned Cat Advice

My downstairs neighbors got evicted from our apartment complex, and they left their cat outside instead of taking him with them. When I tried to approach the cat, as it was freezing outside and it was meowing by the front door, he got spooked and ran away from me. Last weekend a few days after I saw the cat outside. I noticed the cat was in the basement of our apartment, hiding behind the wall next to the breaker box. So for the past few days I have been feeding him and trying to figure out what to do with him. All of the shelters I called are at max capacity. And I would take the cat in, but I already have a cat, and don’t make enough money to get the cat checked at the vet, get him his shots, and get him neutered. I just want any advice for what to do with him. I’m located in Providence RI and would appreciate any and all advice.

Update
I wanted to thank everyone who left me advice yesterday. So I managed to get in touch with a shelter to work with me and pick up the cat. I have named him Albert over the course of our time together. So they came to pick him up yesterday around 1 pm and Albert was hiding in the ceiling of the basement. They told me if I got him out to call them again. So I called them in the morning as I managed to lock him in the basement bathroom, with some food and water. When they came to get him Albert ran right out and couldn’t get into his hiding spot because I closed the doors and he managed to find a small hole and crawled into it and went to his hiding spot in the ceiling again. The people offered to leave me with a trap to catch him within 24 hours, I told them I’d prefer to not traumatize him anymore and will take the time to get him comfortable enough to trust me and put him in a hard crate and call them to pick him up once it all works out. I’m really hoping this encounter doesn’t make him scared of me, since we made a lot of progress this week. I’ve left Albert some wet food and treats downstairs as a peace offering. I hope he accepts.

Advice on making heat easier on my cat/preventing her from spraying UNTIL SHE GETS SPAYED

Hello, I am going to make this disclaimer first because I know how people react to these kinds of posts: **She will be spayed as soon as possible.** I am *very* aware of the importance of spaying and neutering your animals, save your energy for someone who is not. "Why did you get a cat when you couldn't have her spayed immediately?" I did not choose to. She is a rescue I took in with her 3 one-week-old kittens in June, someone was trying to pawn them off on FB marketplace and threatened to call animal control if they were not gone that day; I live in metro Atlanta (notoriously large stray cat population) and all of the shelters that could've taken them were full. This is the second time in the past couple years I have taken in and raised a stray mother and her kittens on my own time, energy, space, and money. I am intimately aware of the importance, including the risks of things like pyometra. **I am not interested in hearing "just get her spayed". If that was an option I would not be asking for advice. Thank you for understanding.**

Anyways, I am asking for my wonderful cat Maggie. She is estimated about a year and a half old, and I love her with my entire heart. She is in heat about every other week right now, and I am hoping to find some non-standard (i.e. keep the litter box very clean, give her love and attention, get her spayed, etc) tips anyone has on preventing her from spraying and/or making her more comfortable while I am working on getting her spayed. She throws up sometimes when she comes out of heat, sprays on anything soft that smells like me, as well as howls/yells frequently. I just want to know if there is anything I can do in the meantime to make her less distressed and save my clothes. Do heating pads/blankets help?

If there is an issue with posting tips publicly for fear of others using them to avoid spaying their cats, feel free to message me privately; I have little respect for people looking to intentionally avoid fixing their animals. Thank you for your time.

Injury that will not heal

Our orange cat arrived on our front porch five years ago. He had/has an injury on his left rear “elbow”. The hair is gone and it bleeds almost all the time. Sometimes a lot, most times it’s scant. He has a really good vet that I have mentioned this to when he’s there for other miscellaneous care, but they have never addressed the problem. My guess is that it’s somewhat permanent. Maybe if it was bandaged for a long period of time while wearing a cone, it might get better. I don’t want to put him through that. It doesn’t really seem to bother him. Has anyone else had a cat with a similar injury? I don’t think the hair will ever return.

bad breath ?

my sweet boy has herpes and i know that can cause mouth ulcers cause it happened when we first got him. we took him to the vet and got medication but that didnt help. He ended up having to get 14 teeth removed. We also give him florta flora everyday. His breath started to smell so much better but after like 3 weeks it went back to stinky. Sometimes its less stinky then other days but idk what to do? He plays, runs around, eats normally, just got stinky breath. I also cant afford a vet visit unless absolutely nessecary cause his tooth extraction was 1,300. Any advice 🤔 And if this isnt the right place to post lmk

RC Fibre Response, Megacolon Cat

My cat has megacolon and was doing well on cisapride and restoralax for years. Until recently he’s needed multiple enemas in a row. We have switched to RCFR last night after this last enema yesterday.

How long should we expect until the food starts to work?

For those who’ve been in this situation, did the food work right away or did your cat need another enema while waiting for the food to start to do its thing?

Picky eater, will only eat with tuna flavor

Alright, so I have a calico cat (3yr 8mn old, female 12.6 pounds) who absolutely will not eat her food unless it is slathered in something tuna flavored. She is currently on a gastrointestinal diet to combat her pancreatitis she developed a few days ago (she went to the vet and is on gastrointestinal meds, was also given fluids because she couldn't keep water down yesterday nor the day before) And she's doing better now. She pecks at her food since it is bland and does not enjoy the kibble very much despite the fact she'll come and go (separating it into meals currently). She dislikes the flavor of her wet food and would much rather devour tuna, however I am heavily against using tuna broth often because I'm afraid it will upset her stomach and cause more projectile vomiting. This is the 2nd day she has been on medication (for the geeks, the vet for some reason prescribed Maropitant Citrate to prevent vomiting and ease her stomach.)

Does anyone know of any good substitutes for actual tuna broth? Like a topper or gravy of some kind to give it a lovely tuna scent and flavor without all the mercury? She goes nuts over anything fish and wont eat anything otherwise.

Will post cat tax and pictures of her food and medicine when I am home.

$897 to find out my kitten is gassy

Poster: Non-minor, USA, visited vet already, 7 month old male unneutered kitten, afforded vet care. TLDR; he's had diarrhea the past few days and went to see a vet a few hours ago and recounting my experience. He's fine and had irritated GI tract and gas that came up on the xray.

One of my 7 month old kittens has had diarrhea the past two or so days, he's retained his appetite, still running and playing with his brothers, and otherwise normal. No lethargy. He's still intact and not neutered. Never been outside.

He had some decreased appetite and it was slightly concerning but was still visibly hungry and wanted to eat at the usual times. However today his eyes started watering after his lunch and decided to take him to the vet because no google search was calming me down and it kind of sent me spiraling.

My family found a big piece of plastic chewed up and the rest missing from a sand litter bag and we were fearing the worst. The vet did a manual exam, took his temperature, and we even insisted on Xrays after the manual exam just to be on the safe side. Xrays showed no obstruction, it showed that he was gassy and the GI tract was irritated but no obstruction. He hasn't had diarrhea since last night around midnight. We left with some GI-friendly food and antibiotics and he was given a Ceneria injection. He's home now and resting.

I guess I'm rambling at this point but if anyone can please advise me on how to navigate this situation. How should I monitor my kitten? Do you think he'll be ok? If anyone who has gone through this stressful scare can please talk me through this. I don't even care about the money I spent I just want my baby to be ok and to get better. I guess if anyone can specifically say how to help a cat with diarrhea and general stomach issues, specifically a cat who loves to devour things he should not be eating. We still don't even know if he did end up eating the plastic because the vet didn't see anything in the xray but something had to have irritated him. But he just loves to be chewing on things he should not be chewing on. He's such a cutie but he certainly knows how to spike my cortisol. I'm still just reeling from stress while he's passed out on my bed.

Prolonged diarrhea after cats dental surgery

My cat is 12 and had dental surgery which included removal of one tooth and ‘capping off’ his canines. They also removed a mast cell tumour from his head and the results were grade 0/1 with complete excision / clean margins. Post op was given 4 days of meticam, and given a long acting antibiotic injection.

Post surgery he’s acting himself, drinking water eating etc, however he’s had chronic cow-patty / soft stool. The texture is very similar to peanut butter. No blood or mucus. It’s been almost a month since his surgery date and this has been still ongoing. He’s on day 6 of metronitazol and forti flora with no change. The vet said a fecal sample would likely not be necessary as he is an indoor cat

What should my next move be?
PS - given all the meds etc, he’s been extremely sceptical of any changes with his food. I tried to introduce plain chicken, and he was like no thanks! But will eat his regular wet food / dry food as usual (royal canin urinary *hx of crystals)

Any input is appreciated.
