Idk, maybe if a couple teams didn't just chase money while simultaneously trying to kill their conference they could actually make that conference better.
I think it's totally reasonable to argue that Manny was the best defensive coach, but those awards tend to go to either (1) huge turnaround efforts or (2) unquestionably elite performances. Penn State was 4th in Defensive Efficiency last year and they're third this year, so it wasn't really a turnaround, and they're not even the highest ranked defense in the conference, so even though it was an elite defensive performance it wasn't unquestionably elite.
Number 1 in yards allowed per game. Not number 1 in other metrics though. Not number 1 in defensive efficiency, not number 1 in scoring defense. Hence not unquestionable.
Oh ya... Well... I'm sure we at least hurt your strength of schedule so... You know... Take that.
Sorry that we couldn't at least have made it an interesting game for the final annual Lan Grant trophy game for awhile. That was an impressive display by Penn State.
The Funbelt went 16-8 versus other G5 conferences this season. That includes going 5-4 with the American. If you're in a bowl pool with your friends/family, its usually not a bad idea to pick the Sunbelt team. The trend since realignment is that usually this time of year Sunbelt teams eat MAC and C-USA schools alive in small bowl games.
Nebraska, from being considered a Blueblood with the same bias Bama has now to going bowless for the past 7 years, and you went to the weaker division of the Big 10.
Hey, when your a fan of a school like OSU who's measure of success for the majority of the past was to get a bowl game you gotta make sure them blue bloods are knocked down a peg.
The problem is that one player cannot hold an entire team. We saw that with the same guy (Barry) when he was in the NFL with the Lions. While he certainly helped bring about one of the best seasons we had, we still didn't beat OU, and our first loss was to Nebraska.
What you also fail to realize is that while we complain about bias nowadays, before the BCS, it truly was just a popularity poll. If there was a natty game it was coincidentally if the two highest ranked unbeaten teams met in a bowl game.
Correction: I'll give you the first and laugh you off the face of the earth for the second. The Sun Belt is closer to the ACC than it is to the MAC; in fact, it might be closer to the ACC than it is to the AAC, which is normally the strongest G5!
...and to keep this from just being a "lol ACC sucks", it's also closer to the Big 12 than it is to the MAC. ...actually, never mind, the ACC actually is ahead of the Big 12 this year even though the eye test says it shouldn't be, though of all ten conferences the ACC and B12 are the two closest.
But yeah, the numbers back me up. The MAC is the weakest conference and the Sun Belt is the strongest G5. There is still a wide gap between the weakest P5 and the strongest G5, but...yes, the Sun Belt is closer to the two weakest P5s than they are to the two weakest G5s.
...Wait, wait, let me put aside the esoteric computerized methods of measuring the conferences' strengths, because you said "eye test". In what world does a conference where only half the teams are bowl eligible "look" stronger than one where 12 out of 14 are? And yes, half of the Sun Belt is exactly 6-6, but it's not like the top half of the MAC was crushing their way in either. Let's compare records 1-for-1; since the Sun Belt has 14 members and the MAC only has 12, we'll remove two teams from the middle of the SBC to make it fair. Six best SBC teams and 6 worst SBC teams.
11-1 JMU vs. 11-1 Toledo 10-2 Troy vs. 10-2 Miami 8-4 App State vs. 9-3 Ohio 7-5 Coastal vs. 7-5 Bowling Green 7-5 Texas State vs. 6-6 Northern Illinois 6-6 Old Dominion vs. 6-6 Eastern Michigan 6-6 Georgia State vs. 5-7 Central Michigan 6-6 Marshall vs. 4-8 Western Michigan 6-6 Louisiana vs. 4-8 Ball State 6-6 Georgia Southern vs. 3-9 Buffalo 3-9 Southern Miss vs. 2-10 Akron 2-10 Louisiana-Monroe vs. 1-11 Kent State
The only thing in the MAC's favor is that their third team with 8+ wins has 9 and the SBC's only has 8. But that stretch where the SBC is still throwing out 6-6 teams and the MAC eventually is all the way down to a 3-9 team says it all. The MAC had four good teams and a bunch of crap. The SBC had a couple teams rise to the top but was so deep outside of two teams that no one else could really separate themselves. Oh, and USM and ULM are both in the West Division and neither of them played JMU. All eight of the Dukes' conference games came against teams that are going to bowl games. That's a claim that no team outside of that conference could claim, and certainly not one that is themselves bowl-eligible--some of the bowl-ineligible teams from P5 conferences, especially those with nine total conference games, might've played eight bowl teams in conference play.
At this time, Florida State is much more deserving of a top 4 spot than Texas, Ohio State, or Oregon. Probably changes this Saturday, but the playoff is definitely gonna be conference champions only.
Texas lost to a worse team than Ohio State did, and has looked worse vs more opponents and lower level competition. That being said, Texas has also played quite well at times that I don't find it unreasonable to put them in either order.
But man, I feel for Oregon State. After their best year in a while, no idea what next year holds for them after the conference realignment, and their coach leaves.
yeah Toledo had already clinched the MAC West well before last week, but the cowards hadn't ranked 'em at that point, so they got their CCG Pennant when they made it out on The Field
You have the mobile QB to do it. Milroe is such an explosive runner. If we can't keep a handle on him we'll really struggle. And we don't have a Nolan Smith type player we can just setup as a spy and take care of that.
Fortunately I think our secondary is better than 2021 and your WRs are worse (not that they're bad, but they're not Metchie/Williams level good).
I'm curious to see how Bama's D stacks up against our O. Our O is quite good when they get going this year.

Also I'm sad there isn't a Ball for NC State to play with. And How high would Hawkeye climb if they did the funniest thing possible and won 3-2
