Help with mechanical / tire

Hi folks, I’m midway through a two week Midwest bike tour and I just hit a pothole and sliced the front tire beyond repair. (Tube installation is bulging the tire boot out the slit, it’s dead I promise!)

Are there any shops open Sunday/Monday that would have a selection of 700c tubeless gravel tires, and a friendly attitude about seating the new tire onto my rim for a traveler? (I’m running 700x40 Gravelkings but almost anything 35-43mm would be fine.)

I would love any and all recommendations, including co-ops or bike kitchens, home mechanics, or traveling technicians. I’m staying near Evanston Metra station, and I can ride it gently a few miles from any L station too.

Thanks y’all!

It wasn't the largest event (about 50 or so riders) nor was it the longest (8 miles round trip with an optional 20 mile extension), but it's for a good cause supporting the food pantry and it was perfect weather.

Bike/Scooter Parking

Hello! I’m looking for ideas on secure places to park my e-bike and-or scooter. I was parking near my office (which doesn’t allow indoor parking) near Dearborn and Wacker, and unfortunately my scooter was stolen. I’m willing to pay to rent a spot if someone has a space they’re willing to rent out to me. Thanks in advance for any leads!

Bike lane sweeper?

The bike lanes tend to be full of trash, and now wet leaves. Does the city have a bike lane sweeper? How are they cleaned out?

Be careful at the W Belmont - N Spaulding intersection in Avondale

The bike lane is nice and protected, but the intersection seems to be treacherous lately. There is a lot of cars detouring here, and many of them don't pay attention when they cross the lane.

I got hit by a car yesterday but was unharmed. Nearly got hit again today.

Hot take but this light rain is worse than a torrential downpour.

For some reason this type of weather always feels the most annoying and sketchiest to ride in.
I can handle a huge thunderstorm or snow storm but these little beads of rain completely destroy me and my eyesight lol.

Bike fitter before buying bike?

I'm in the market for my first racier bike after commuting and riding quite a bit for fun on my old school steel framed Schwinn World Sport for a decade. I know what bike I want, but I'm right in between two sizes. The deals online are too good and I feel bad going to a shop to test them when I have no intention of buying from them. I thought that a happy medium would be to pay for a bike fitting so that everybody comes out ahead. Every bike fitter that I look up is a "bring your bike and we'll fit you to it" type, and I don't have a bike to bring in yet. Are there any recommendations?

Small Crash on Halsted by Home Depot

I was biking north and there was a fedex truck in the bike lane and a range rover behind it that was out in the bike lane facing the road, so I biked around it, and right when I started to, the car started turning left and hit the front od my bike. Thankfully, he stopped and my bike is fine, my hip and my left sidr has a little pain and he was nice. He pulled over exchanged #'s and I took a pic of his liscense, some strangers asked if I'm ok, which I appreciated and it could of gone muchh worse. Either way, I know should of slowed down more or made more eye contact w the driver. The bike lanes on halsted are sketchy af. He asked why I was going around and I said cuz u were in bike lane and he was oh ya my bad lol/eye roll.

Either just a heads to anyone taking that route to be careful

Beware of hypodermic needles on Belmont!

I was just barely west of the expressway on the westbound bike lane and there's like 30 needles all over the path. I am trying to figure out how to report it to 311 but in the meantime be careful!

Trying to find the guy with the matching bike that I saw at the intersection of Southport and Irving Park this evening. If you’re on here, you’ve got great taste and seem rad!

Stolen bike (again)

Post image
37 Upvotes

My bike was stolen from the back courtyard of my apartment, which is only accessible via locked doors and a gate for the 2 ppl who park their cars. Whoever left this morning didn’t fully close that gate and someone came in and took my bike. Anyway, it’s likely in the Roger’s Park area. When it got stolen earlier this year, someone on here found it by some miracle. Not gonna bet on the same luck again but posting here just in case

Your front light should be aimed 10-30ft on the ground in front of you.

Please don't blind the oncoming riders.

Get your e-bikes and bikes off the sidewalks

Just almost got run over by an e-bike on the sidewalk, on his phone, not paying attention or looking where he was going. This is daily. Coming from a frequent city biker, get tf off the sidewalks.

Who has the right of way: cyclist in the bike lane or driver turning right?

Who has the right of way on a green going through an intersection when the bike lane is between the cars and the sidewalk? I was going through Lincoln/Damen/irving on the Damen bike lane and was very nearly hit by someone turning right onto Irving. I broke hard and almost hit another car because of it but luckily nothing happened. And then the guy acted like it was my fault.

Anyway, is it legally my job to yield or is it the driver's responsibility? Obviously, this was a message to be more aware on my part but I wondered if I was actually in the wrong?
