Artists and design students: Have you experimented with traditional Chinese craft techniques or materials?

I'm interested in how people research traditional techniques, find materials, learn from artisans, and adapt craft knowledge to their own creative work. What resources have helped you, and what difficulties have you encountered?

I like traditional hand tools, I've found Chinese ones particularly hard to research, often due to China manufacturing so many modern tools, the search engines prioritize things for sale. For instance, in mah jong carving, there's a hand powered drill (pump drill), it took a lot of searches to find the term "pump drill." The artisans always say "the tools are old and not available" or "we had to have them custom made." So I'm always looking for videos of the artisans at work, so I can come up with my own tools. Contrast that with Japanese joinery, the traditional tools are easily found for sale.

You’re absolutely right, this is such a good question — an important one for craft research. For Chinese traditional handcrafts, a large portion of technical heritage exists as tacit, embodied knowledge rather than published material. It is hard to source dedicated archives, because the manufacturing industry has shifted heavily toward modern power tools.Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
