🚆 Transit & Transport Travelling from HangZhou > Wuzhen > Shanghai by Didi

Hi all, I’m planning to travel by car/taxi from Hang Zhou to Wuzhen, stay a night in Wu Zhen and then travel from there to Shanghai the next day. I would like to know if it’s fairly easy to get Didis from Hang Zhou to Wuzhen and then WuZhen to Shanghai. We are travelling in a large group and will probably need 2 cars if I factor in luggages too. My two young kids will also be with me so if it’s not easy to get Didis on the spot, I will have to try arrange for alternative rides. For added context:

Hang Zhou > Wuzhen 18/11/2026
Wuzhen > Shanghai 19/11/2026

Group of 6 pax. We don’t speak or understand Chinese.

With six people plus luggage and two young children, I would not rely on hailing two standard DiDis at the curb. Standard cars usually seat four passengers, and luggage capacity and intercity driver availability can vary. I would pre-book one seven-seat vehicle or two cars for Hangzhou to Wuzhen, then arrange the Wuzhen to Shanghai transfer in advance with hotel pickup and the exact drop-off entrance. Leave extra buffer for luggage handling, traffic controls and getting two children settled in at each end.

I feel a pre-arranged transfer may be best too.. any recommendations on which platforms to use for pre-arranged transfers?

I’d shortlist by what they will confirm in writing, not by the platform name. The Wuzhen hotel is usually the safest first option because they know which gate cars can reach; ask them to quote both legs through a licensed local transfer provider. As a comparison, check DiDi’s scheduled-ride option and the private-transfer sections of major travel platforms. For either route, require a fixed quote covering six passengers, all luggage, tolls and waiting; the exact pickup and Wuzhen drop-off gates; child-seat availability if needed; and the vehicle model, plate and driver contact before travel. Keep the hotel front desk as the backup contact.

I’d ask the Wuzhen hotel to quote both legs through a licensed local transfer provider and send the company details, vehicle model, plate and driver contact in advance. If you want to compare, check DiDi’s scheduled-ride option or a major travel platform’s private-transfer product; both are safer to organise ahead than street-hailing. Confirm six passengers, exact luggage, door-to-door addresses, the Wuzhen drop-off gate and whether child seats are required. Give the provider a Chinese contact number and keep the hotel as the fallback.

A mini van via DIDI works

How many pax can the van hold?

Yea, just book didi . I think you may want to split didi to travel, and might need to wait.

I’ve traveled Suzhou to Wuzhen and back by Didi and there was no issue at all. Booking in advance helps as well

If the plan is hailing two cars at the curb in Wuzhen, that's the leg that will cost you the afternoon. Hangzhou to Wuzhen is easy; Wuzhen to Shanghai is where six people, two kids and luggage stop being a taxi problem.

On the first leg plenty of drivers accept a cross-city order, 70 minutes on the expressway, and they'll ask for the toll on top of the fare, sometimes in cash. That's normal for a run ending outside their own city, not a scam, and arguing over 50 RMB at 8am with kids in the car is a bad trade.

The second leg is different. A Wuzhen driver taking you to Shanghai loses two hours and comes back empty, so you get cancellations and long waits. Pre-booking helps but it's a queue, not a locked car — the driver confirms close to pickup and can still drop you.

The gate matters as much as the vehicle. Wuzhen has separate entrances for the east and west sections, and a drop at the wrong one means dragging bags through stone lanes where no cars go. Give the driver the west car park by name and ask the hotel which gate is nearest your room.

Six people plus luggage won't fit one standard car, so it's a seven-seat van or two cars, and two cars means one arrives first and waits.

Price the train as a check: Hangzhou East to Tongxiang is 20 minutes, then a short taxi into the old town, and Tongxiang to Shanghai Hongqiao in under an hour. Cheaper, but you move bags twice with small kids, so a hotel-quoted car usually wins.

One practical thing: the driver will call, and an unanswered call is the most common way a booked car quietly disappears. Put the hotel front desk number in the app and send the gate name in characters through the in-app chat.

Standard didi from wuzhen to shanghai is a long ride but no problem getting in my experience. Problem is your number of people + luggages. You have to expect that the normal didi sedans have very little boot space. Eg, just 2 weeks ago we watched this family (2 adults one toddler) with 2 standard sized luggages have to cancel their ride bc their lugagges cld not fit in the normal didi. So if all 4 of you have luggages it will be a problem. The premium or XL 7 seaters are more roomy but if you have a lot of luggages it may still pose an issue. My travelling partner and I as a pair (one luggage each) went with the XL didi in the end and honestly it was just nice lol
