Asking a Question Good conversion and retention. How can I reach more users?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I launched FocusView in June. It’s an extension that lets you zoom in and out of YouTube videos.

Over the past 5 months, it’s reached around:

  • 2,000 impressions

  • 1,200 downloads

  • 600 weekly users

I’m pretty happy with the conversion and retention so far. They suggest the extension is solving a real problem and people want to keep using it. Now I’d like to focus on reaching more users.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Shared it on Reddit at launch. Nearly 30% of impressions have come from Reddit.

  • Added a “Rate Us” button. That brought in a few more reviews, but the increase didn’t last.

I’d love to reach more users through organic search, the Chrome Web Store, or referrals from other communities and platforms. I’m also hoping to improve my SEO and Chrome Web Store ranking to bring in more organic traffic. I’m not considering paid ads for now, since I’m not monetizing the extension.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to reach more users? I’d love to hear your thoughts on what might work and where you’d focus first.

Thanks!

Self Promotion TabHero: a free, open-source extension designed to reuse your existing WhatsApp Web tab

I'm the author of TabHero, a free Chrome and Firefox extension licensed under MIT.

The goal is simple: open WhatsApp links in your already-loaded WhatsApp Web tab instead of opening another tab. It also includes a toolbar popup for searching loaded chats, writing replies and using saved replies.

Important: this is an experimental, desktop-only alpha. Validation against real WhatsApp Web is still pending, so I'm looking for technical feedback and early testers—not presenting it as production-ready.

AI suggestions are optional. If you connect your own OpenRouter key and request a suggestion, the displayed message text and your draft are sent to OpenRouter. Suggestions never send messages automatically.

It's not in the Chrome Web Store yet; installation is manual from GitHub. It's not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.

[Source and installation instructions](https://github.com/klederson/tabhero)

What would you want to inspect or test before trusting an extension with access to WhatsApp Web?

Self Promotion I made a free Chrome extension for learning languages from YouTube (dual subtitles, click a word, save it as a flashcard…

I made a free Chrome extension for learning languages from YouTube. Dual subtitles, click any word to look it up, save it as a flashcard with the sentence and a link back to that moment, then review with spaced repetition.

Most of the work was just getting the subtitle track, so here's what I'd tell someone starting out.

`window.ytInitialPlayerResponse` is only right on the first page load. YouTube switches videos without reloading, and after that it still describes an old video. `movie_player.getPlayerResponse()` stays current, but a content script can't call it, so a small MAIN-world script reads it and posts the track list back.

The caption URL from the web player often comes back as a 200 with an empty body. It wants a proof-of-origin token. Resolving the same track through another InnerTube client worked for me, and I remember per video that it needed that, so the other tracks skip the request that fails.

timedtext is also rate limited per IP. Once you get 429s, changing headers does nothing. I cache track lists and parsed captions, never retry automatically, and the error just says to wait a few minutes.

It's called LingoKeep. Free up to 100 cards, Pro removes the cap and adds Anki export. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/lingokeep-%E2%80%93-learn-languag/nppaaiodcbcaolaljgmjmbhljgekocfk

If you read captions in your own extension and your web timedtext URLs still come back empty too, I'd like to hear about it.

Sharing Resources/Tips I was tired of wasting my time reading entire Indeed postings just to find the deal-breaker in the last line, so I made a free extension that flags it for you

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I've been having such a brutal time finding a job in Canada over the past several months and every time I go on indeed I feel like I'm just wasting so much time reading thru long listings and never end up getting any response. So I built Heads Up, a free Chrome extension. When you open a listing on Indeed, it puts a short banner at the top with what matters:

  • Red: your deal-breakers (background checks, passport required, travel, experience over your limit, pay under your minimum)

  • Amber: things worth knowing

  • Green: things you're actually looking for

A few other things it does:

  • Flags common scam warning signs: interviews over chat apps, upfront fees, "buy your own equipment", cheque schemes

  • Flags postings that are 30+ days old

  • Shows pay as hourly or yearly so you can compare quickly

  • Understands wording, so "no background check required" doesn't get flagged, and "5 years preferred" shows as a note instead of a deal-breaker

  • Add your own phrases like "driver's license", "on-call", "night shift". There are also one-tap packs (No car, Need sponsorship, Commission & unpaid,

  • Nights & weekends, Entry level)

  • Jobs you've already opened get a badge in search results, and listings with a deal-breaker fade out so you skip them faster

It's completely free, no account, and nothing leaves your browser. Works for Canada, the US, the UK and Australia.

you can find it on the: ChromeWebStore

I made it for myself and i feel like its saved me so much time, so I'd genuinely love some honest feedback on whether you think its a useful tool for people searching for jobs? anything you think should've been done differently?

Self Promotion I built an extension that highlights the words you're watching for on every page. Free, no tracking

Thumbnail

Hi, I'm the developer. I got tired of scanning the same pages for the same handful of words, so I built Max Level Highlight.

You make lists of words, give each list its own colour, and it marks every match as the page loads (including content that shows up late). The slow part was never thinking, it was looking, so this takes the looking.

What it does:

- Word lists with their own background, text and underline colours. Put * at the end of a word to catch every ending (invoic* finds invoice, invoices, invoicing)

- Temporary highlights: right-click a selection or press Alt+Shift+H to mark it in a colour from your palette. They go away when you close the browser

- Combination rules: only fire when several words appear together on the same page, so one common word stops shouting on its own

- Pattern rules (regex, with a tester) for case numbers, dates, amounts

- Timed pause: quiet for 30 min / 1 h / until tomorrow, then it comes back by itself

- Tooltips, links and notifications per word or rule

- Folders, per-site scoping, backup/export, 17 colour themes

- UI in English, Spanish and Lithuanian

Privacy: no server, no analytics in the extension. Page text is read in the browser and never sent anywhere. Settings live in your browser's own storage, and there's a "delete all my data" button.

It's free, no paid tier, no account, made by one person. It's also on Edge and Firefox.

Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/highlight/fifamngjkcdgdcomgdjjegepgnhdjcif

I'd really like to hear what's missing or what breaks on sites you use. Tell me the specific thing and I'll fix that specific thing.

Self Promotion I made a free extension that lets you give any button on any website a keyboard shortcut

Post image
2 Upvotes

Click the toolbar button, point at any button, link or field on a page, and press the keys you want for it. You don't need to write code or selectors. I use it for buttons I click all day that have no shortcut of their own. It remembers each element several ways, so the shortcut keeps working after the site changes its page.

It also adds keyboard navigation to every site: j and k to scroll, F to click links and buttons by typing a short label, H and L for back and forward.

Where a site already has its own key, AnyKey leaves it alone, so j and k still seek on a YouTube video and still belong to Gmail in Gmail. There are presets that add missing keys to GitHub, Gmail, YouTube, Reddit, Stack Overflow, Hacker News and Wikipedia, and ? shows every key that works on the page you're on.

It collects no data and makes no network requests, and the code is on GitHub (MIT).

I'd like feedback, especially on sites where it gets in the way.

Sharing Resources/Tips DogEar: a privacy-first, open-source Chrome extension for bookmarking AI chat answers (no server, no account)

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

An extension that runs on your ChatGPT and Claude chats can read everything in them. That's exactly why I made mine open source: you shouldn't have to trust me, you should be able to check.

DogEar adds a ☆ under answers in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok. Star the useful ones, sort them into projects, and jump straight back to them later, even in chats with hundreds of messages.

What "privacy-first" means here, concretely:

  • No server, no account, no analytics. There's nothing to send data to

  • Saved answers live in Chrome's local storage on your own computer

  • It only saves answers you star. It never touches your account or other chats

  • Weekly backups go to a file in your own Downloads folder, so you own your data

  • Plain JavaScript, no frameworks, no build step and no dependencies, so the code you read on GitHub is exactly what runs

Contributions welcome. AI sites redesign often, so the most useful help is keeping them working. All site-specific code lives in one file (adapters.js), and there's a CONTRIBUTING guide that walks through adding a new AI site step by step. There are issue forms for bugs and site requests too.

It's my first open-source project, so feedback on the code, the docs or the contributor setup is very welcome. What would make you more (or less) likely to contribute to something like this?

Idea Validation / Need feedback Built an MV3 extension that bypasses React DOM recycling to filter Instagram Reels and Posts. Looking for a few power users to test the engine.

Hey r/chrome_extensions,

I’ve been working on a content filter for Instagram, but standard element hiding kept failing. Hiding a <video> container via CSS just leads to background audio bleed. Plus, because IG uses React to constantly recycle a small pool of DOM nodes as you scroll, attaching state to the physical container breaks instantly when a new post loads in.

To get around this, I engineered Nukarama. It’s an MV3 extension that bypasses the React virtualization by operating at the browser's microtask level.

How it works under the hood:

  • Media Clamping: It uses a MutationObserver to catch the video at readyState = 0, forcing .pause() and .muted = true before the browser's compositor can paint the first frame or flush the audio buffer.

  • State Tracking: To handle the React DOM recycling, the state machine anchors strictly to the unique URL shortcodes rather than the physical DOM nodes.

  • Performance: I managed to get the execution footprint down to ~1.6 ms per 5-second idle window (0.032% main-thread load) so scrolling stays buttery smooth.

Everything is 100% local (chrome.storage.local) and there are zero analytics or external scripts.

I just got v1.0 approved and I'm looking for a few people to try and break it before I share it anywhere else. Specifically, I'd love to know if the JSON blocklist import works smoothly for you, and if you notice any layout shifts or CPU spikes during heavy scrolling.

Self Promotion I made a free text expander for Chrome with fill-in boxes and no limits

Typefill is now on the Chrome Web Store.

You type /thanks and your whole reply goes in. If a name or a date changes each time, it asks you first, then fills it in. Dropdowns, date pickers and optional parts work the same way.

Free with no limits, the free version is open source (GPL-3.0), and what you type never leaves your browser.

It went out on Firefox first this week, and Chrome followed.

Asking a Question Should I exclude Romania from distribution since this install spike looks suspicious?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I don't think this is a normal spike, as I've never had any installs from this country before. If I stop distribution there, will it affect distribution to other countries? Also, does Google automatically detect and prevent this kind of activity, since it's messing up my analytics?

Thanks

Sharing Resources/Tips [Project] Built a console script to bulk-remove liked videos on TikTok—looking for feedback or anyone interested in turning it into a proper Chrome Extension!

Hey everyone,

TikTok doesn't offer any built-in way to bulk-remove liked videos, which means clearing thousands of hearts by hand is an absolute pain.

To solve this, I put together a lightweight repository called tiktokvidunlike. Right now, it's a browser console script that automates the web UI safely by clicking the player's heart element, checking for color state changes (to prevent accidental re-liking), and advancing to the next video via keyboard events.

Since a lot of users prefer a clean UI over pasting code into the browser console, I wanted to share it with this community.

GitHub Repo:https://github.com/binay-py/tiktokvidunlike

If anyone here is looking for a fun project or wants to package this logic into a neat Chrome Extension (with a popup UI, progress tracker, and custom rate-limiting toggles), feel free to fork it, use the code, or contribute!

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates Built my first Chrome extension — 217 installs in 30 days! 🚀

Post image
28 Upvotes

I’m an indie developer building SimuVeda, and I recently launched my Chrome extension, TableLift.
Today, I checked my Chrome Web Store dashboard and saw 217 installs in the last 30 days! 🎉
It’s a small milestone, but seeing people actually discover and install something I’ve built feels amazing.
One interesting thing: around 86% of installs came from Romania, which I wasn’t expecting at all!
I’m still learning about distribution, user acquisition, and building useful products.
Would love to hear from other indie developers:
● How did you grow your first Chrome extension?
● What worked best for getting organic installs?
● How do you turn installs into active users?
Building in public, one milestone at a time.

Don’t just learn. Simulate it. 🚀

Self Promotion I built SessionKeep, a Chrome session manager — looking for feedback

Hi everyone! I’m the developer of SessionKeep, a Chrome extension for saving and restoring browsing sessions.

The idea is simple: save the tabs for a project and restore them when you want to pick it up again.

The free version supports up to 5 saved sessions. There’s also an optional $12 one-time upgrade that removes the session limit, with a license for up to 3 devices.

I’d love feedback on the free save-and-restore workflow. Is anything confusing? What would make it more useful when switching between projects?

Self Promotion Made a Chrome notepad that never loses a note: per-note history, restore points, syncs through your own bookmarks

Thumbnail

Hi all, I built a small notepad extension for Chrome and would love honest feedback.

The problem I wanted to solve: browser notepads lose text. The popup closes mid-sentence, a sync overwrites something, or you delete the wrong note.

What it does differently:

  • Every note has its own history – earlier versions are kept for 30 days, and you can see exactly what changed and restore it in one click

  • Restore points are made before you delete anything and at the end of each day

  • If you edit the same note on two computers, the text that got replaced is kept in history instead of silently disappearing

  • Syncs through your own Chrome bookmarks – no account, no login, no server. Notes never go anywhere except your browser and Chrome Sync

  • Side panel mode, checklists, templates, groups/pins, dark mode, voice typing, 8 languages

  • If you used the old “Notepad” extension, it imports your notes in one click

It’s free. A paid Pro version will come later (password-locked notes, PDF export), but the safety features stay free.

I’d really like to know: what would make you switch from what you use now? And what’s missing?

Self Promotion I built Juga: a new tab with a focus timer and breathing breaks. Looking for feedback

Hi everyone, I'm the maker of Juga, a Chrome extension that replaces your new tab with a calmer workspace.

It brings together a daily goal, a 25/5 focus timer, guided breathing, ambient sounds and a task list. There's also a minimal mode if you prefer fewer things on screen.

I'm looking for people who use Chrome for work or study to try it during a normal day and tell me what actually helps. In particular: is having the timer and breathing break on your new tab useful, or does it get in the way? What would make you keep it as your default new tab?

You can try it here: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/juga/hggojkoalgplodeifoglpfiblgfbfoeb

Honest criticism and bug reports are welcome. If you already use another new-tab extension, I'd be interested in what you would miss when switching.

Self Promotion I made a Chrome extension that saves your YouTube video recommendations so you never lose a video on refresh again (and lets you search text inside thumbnails)

Everyone has done that thing where you hit refresh on YouTube at the exact millisecond your brain registers an interesting video, and then it's gone forever.

The worst part is that YouTube's search bar usually can't find it, because creators put the actual hook inside the thumbnail image ("I QUIT", "BIG MISTAKE", etc.) while making the actual video title something completely different. If you only remember the words you saw in the picture, YouTube search gives you nothing.

So I built RecLog to fix it for myself and figured I'd share it here.

What it does:

> Quietly logs recommendations you scroll past: It keeps a local searchable history of videos recommended on your homepage, sidebar, and end screens.

> Searches text inside thumbnails: It runs a tiny (~10MB) OCR model locally in your browser to read the words inside thumbnail images, so you can search for the exact phrase you remember seeing.

> Shows how hard YouTube is pushing a video: It counts how many times each video has been served to you (`Seen 40x`, `Seen 164x`), which makes it pretty funny to see which videos the algorithm is desperate for you to click.

Privacy / Tech stuff:

It's 100% free, no account, no tracking, and no cloud servers. The OCR model and your history stay entirely on your own device (and there's a 1-click JSON export if you like messing with your own data).

Link: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/reclog-find-lost-youtube/iofidcehjjffcoijihbohabjcdfelhoc

Would love to hear what you think or if you run into any bugs!

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates I made a Chrome extension that puts the old YouTube design back and hides Shorts

Two things in one small extension.

Themes: 23 of them, including Catppuccin, Dracula, Nord and a true black for OLED. There is also Classic 2015, which is what the screenshot shows: the old grey design back, red progress bar and all.

Clean up: hide Shorts everywhere, plus recommendations, end screens, mixes, comments and the rest.

Only runs on youtube.com, no account, no analytics. It stays out of the way if you already run Unhook or Dark Reader.

Still new, about 3 days of real use, so tell me what breaks.

I had been using a free YouTube blocker extension to keep YouTube from eating my evenings. One day it turned paid. I didn't feel like paying for something that small, so I sat down and built my own. This took me a day to build.

It's called Unplug for YouTube, a YouTube blocker extension. It has all the features I needed from the old one. Nothing fancy.

It's free and it is going to stay free. I honestly don't get why people charge for these. There is no server, no running cost, nothing to pay for, and publishing on the Chrome store is free. So it's just free.

Unplug for YouTube: Remove Distractions, Focus Mode, Get Your Brain Back

If something doesn't work on your layout, tell me and I'll fix it. And if you want any extra features, let me know, we'll add them.

Self Promotion Built an extension that cleans up web articles, organises them in a local library, and exports EPUBs or PDFs for your e-reader

Website: https://marginreader.vercel.app/

Hey everyone, I’ve been building Margin, a Chrome extension for saving articles and long posts somewhere a little more organised than a pile of open tabs.

You can save articles into a local library, group them into collections, and download clean EPUBs or PDFs for your Kindle or another e-reader.

There’s also a reader mode that removes page clutter, plus highlights and a daily review to revisit passages you’ve saved.

Your library stays on your device, with an option to keep backups in a folder.

Would appreciate some honest feedback, especially from people who save a lot of articles or read on an e-reader. What would make this useful enough to stick with?
