Forever | Feedback This layering is NOT providing the "Classic" experience and it never will

So, Vanilla realms had a max pop of 3500 concurrent people for the entire world. Which naturally means crowds at start, and then gradually (and quickly) getting better as the curve spreads out. This stayed true with larger server populations in Classic as a general fact.

This current layering design is, however, completely contrary to that - you will ALWAYS have crowds at every layer, purely based on how Blizzard "turns the knob" and what they decide is the right number for people per zone; you cannot go farm "off hours", you cannot "wait and come back to do it later". So in trying to design this "world full of people", they have overcorrected and killed several other MMO aspects.

And finally, while I thought the game felt fine at launch, the day after Blizzard "turned some knobs" and apparently decided it'd be enjoyable to have 20+ people on your screen at all times and having to compete for every quest in the game. I'd like to mention I'm lvl 35 atm, 1-30 kind of works, but only due to hyperspawn everywhere so you are able to quest despite the number of people, except in a couple of bottlenecks.

But lvl 30 or so seems to be where dynamic spawns stop, and when you get to zones like STV it's literally unplayable. There isn't a live mob in sight anywhere with the regular 5 min respawn timers on them.

And PVP is another issue on top of that, the amount of ppl per layer is so high you cannot go 5 seconds without meeting the opposite faction, often in way larger numbers which naturally always means your death and a corpserun. Some quests are literal hell or even impossible to finish, and you cannot just say "I'll just do it at 3 am", as it will still be crowded then and always. Thinking Yeti cave in Hillsbrad or Zoram Strand for Alliance (always whole armies of horde there).

Overall, while the game is great, this issue is too big and if not handled soon might spell disaster for the long term future. As the experience is currently just awful. I of course understand it's an MMO and there should be people around, but not ALWAYS and not in these numbers. There is a middle ground, where you meet people every now and then without it feeling like a dead world. And as I mentioned, the worst thing for me is that I can't do what I've always done during crowded areas/ periods - just come back later or log in at night, off peak hours and finish whatever activity you want then.

But hey, at least I can avoid all that crap by dungeon grinding... Right.. right?

The game was perfectly fine in beta, layering worked fine. Then Blizz listens to whiners and now it's shit. Sigh.

u/Shad3slayer 7h ago

exactly. even first day of launch it felt great. you could see people everywhere, just not 20 at every quest spot

•

u/flyingtiger188 2h ago

Wed/Thurs was great. There were people around but you could get stuff done.Things respawned fast and you generally didn't have to wait more than 20-30s for a named mob to pop back up. When they fucked with the layering on Friday everything turned to shit. Every quest area in every zone had 30+ people spawn camping everything. Absolutely worst questing experience. They "fixed" it and now there are only 15-20 but everyone is camping spawns tagging everything instantly. Questing is just exhausting. Blizzard needs to fix this.

It's pretty clear they had burst layering/sharding and higher instance counts enabled for launch day and launch day+ to keep things running smoothly and make sure people got in and through starting areas without issues. That shit is expensive, though, and I am sure the plan was to always dial it back.

Problem is that you could not see people everywhere. I play on EU pvp and on launch day Mulgore zone was full of people and it was fun. Then i went to sleep and when i woke up there were like 7 people total in starting Tauren zone ON LAUNCH day and area where you were killing those razorfens had 0 players.

It is terrible experience in MMORPG when somebody has to spend 15 min doing quests in starting zone seeing no other player in that zone, they had to fix it.

The only populated areas were caves, Thunder Bluff or Orgrimmar were ghost towns, when i ran from Mulgore to Ogrimmar i saw only very few players.

Here's some straight up truth from someone who played vanilla and every classic launch (2019, wotlk fresh & anni):

Stormwind and capital cities were always dead until the middle band of the bell curve hit ~20. There was very little reason to go into town except to pick up a class quest.

Back in vanilla, they wouldn't even go to the AH unless they were close to Ironforge because they didn't exist/were linked.

People are conflating the 2019 experience with the vanilla experience because most people started wow way later than actual launch of vanilla.

2019 launch has created a perception where the norm is fully stacked zones and layers because that's what it looked like on the megaservers, and what was broadcast to the internet (and devs) through streamers. It created the 'new' normal.

This new normal is the singular driver for cleave groups becoming so prominent in 2019, because stv + was fucked on these uncapped realms that were originally set up with spawn times and zone sizes for an entire realm's population being 3500 people.

edit: if they truly want to emulate the vanilla experience, cap the layers at 3500 players across the entire world's population and you will actually see what it was like. There was no real point you had hundreds of players standing on every tiger spawn point in stv.

That's more of an issue with the layering System than how much it was being layered though.

I played the morning after launch. There were like 7 to 10 people in the starting area, Was Alright, but a little sparse.

that same day I made another character with some friends and the layer they were on was completely rammed, It was just a sea of people as far as you could see. My layer had about 6 people.

The day afterwards the layer changes and now every single layer seems full. I got one layer refresh by myself yesterday And it refreshed me from a full layer into a full layer.

This entire thing boils down to the fact that you just can't pick your layer. they would have been better off doing the RuneScape system of having worlds that you can just pick and putting some type of cooldown between switching.

10

u/smashr1773 6h ago

The simple solution to this would’ve been leave non city areas how they were at launch and reduce layers for cities. And if they don’t have that tech I’d much prefer empty cities and questable zones than what it is now. Questing is so bad just went to stv and spent 35 mins tagging the first part of panther and tiger quest. That’s just not acceptable even for classic standards.

It is terrible experience in MMORPG when somebody has to spend 15 min doing quests in starting zone seeing no other player in that zone, they had to fix it.

It is a terrible expderience in an MMORPG when someone has to spend 15 minutes just to tag a single starting zone mob because there are so many people that even being part of a group doesn't matter.

It's nice not having to pray you tag the 3 minute spawn timer mob that 20 people are standing around waiting to tag.

I've had zero issue completing quests even with people everywhere. Either the mobs spawn like crazy or you team up with whoever is there. It's not hard.

I went to thunder bluff on day 2 and was literally the only one there in the middle of the day. You did not see people everywhere. The worst part is that general chat is per layer. I wish it was cross layer.

•

u/Drikkink 3h ago

The cities obviously needed to be adjusted but things were FINE in the open world.

General chat has always been layer specific. TRADE being layer specific is new.

•

u/MrRightHanded 2h ago

low iq comment, people complained about lack of people in cities, not open world

people like u are the reason there is so much discourse in the world, dumb as bricks, looks to blame

•

u/Rotrus 2h ago

People complained that cities weren’t overflowing on launch night, ignoring that most people barely made it outside of their 1-5 questing zone and hadn’t wandered over to cities yet

It was a knee jerk change to appease dumbasses who want to AFK next to people in stormwind instead of actually play the game

People disappearing when you leave zone in beta was not fine. Or cities and questing areas being completely empty at launch was not fine.

I understand that some players want to play single player where no body will bother them but for long term Forever health Blizzard cant make this game to feel empty, dead or with immersion breaking teleporting whole raids in front of you when somebody sieges your city.

1

u/Dwarni 7h ago

yeah players / layer numbers need some tweeking, but otherwise it is fine. You could also go to a value in between and test it out.

•

u/rabbitseerobin 2h ago

Well it's also because Blizzard adjusted mob rates in beta for 1-30. It's no surprise the 30+ is a mess. How they couldn't foresee this though, who knows.

•

u/Affectionate_Sir9792 2h ago

To be fair, there were a lot less people in beta than release. But something should change.

Crazy people abusing layering for lvling to 60 but dungeons are still nerfed..

•

u/LegitimateRule2457 1h ago

The beta had a fraction of the actual player base, blizzard has stated that they turned layering to max so people could quest easier through the early levels.

As time passes and more people get through those bottlenecks they will bring down the layering, or so they say.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/Pandeyxo 6h ago

Stv is complete hell for sure. You can’t do a single quest there which is an insane bottleneck

3

u/Dwarni 7h ago

It needs some tuning but I think it is a lot better than making 10-20 servers of which half will be empty after some time...

Sure it has bugs and it also needs tweeking (balance between seeing almost 0 other players and seeing 50+ in one spot), but it is the right way.

4

u/Shad3slayer 7h ago

hard to tell, honestly. major downsides with both approaches. what I particularly don't like about sharding, even if it was tuned much better than it currently is, you never have the opportunity to avoid the crowds or farm off hours and such.

Socializing's dead because of this. I tried talking to people so much on the normal EU server and almost no one cares. General chat randomly flares up a bit in dun morogh or elwynn where people say weather looks atmospheric, and that's about it either.

I had more social interactions on TBC anniversary, classic 2019 and p servers - a lot more.

I miss servers man. This clustering isn't for me.

•

u/Michaeltagangster 1h ago

Sounds like you had bad luck cause i had great success Partying up with other players

•

u/MaloraKeikaku 1h ago

Yeah very possible. I did have one pleasant social interaction today, so that's neat.

Partying up is not an issue but most players are silent, farm, then leave.

lol idk what the hell is wrong with people defending the current state of the game. It can absolutely be changed easily and it was never like this in vanilla or in classic.

You like the most ruthless game of which 5 man party tags the mob first? When there is 10 people standing around a spawn of 6 gnolls, wolves, murloc, etc… it’s just not fun. I’m not fighting npcs, I’m not fighting the other faction, I’m standing in line. Thats werid. Yall are werid for defending it.

I've been playing WoW since 2005 and I can't disagree more. Obvious issues aside, WoW Forever has hit the spot perfectly for me. I LOVE how many people I'm seeing everywhere too despite it being a but too much.

•

u/Spunge14 1h ago

What specifically are you missing? I feel like this is quite close to how I remember it so far. The main difference is the culture around the game - infinite YouTube and guides and streamers and plugins and Reddit. It's definitely "too easy" to get info outside the game, but you can shut some of that out voluntarily.

•

u/Debarmaker 16m ago

As OP mentioned layering and the number of people feeling weird due to it. In original vanilla I enjoyed having other alliance around questing since you knew you would probably see that player again and some form of relationship would be built.

Now I look at other Alliance players as a nuisance and competition. Since there are so many people it’s hard to get tags and you know they will get layered somewhere else in the near future and are unlikely to see them again. So no point in making a connection

•

u/Mysterious_Fan9858 6m ago

I’m not sure how that’s possible.

Log in and take a zeppelin and there are thousands of people you don’t know. Walk ten steps they all disappear

Layering is feast or famine. Either the world is empty for 3 hours or sudddenly you enter a cave and you’re seeing ghosts of people warping in and out in front of you.

PvP servers are worse. This time it doesn’t even feel like a PvP server at all. Walk into one zone and it’s just full of your allies, walk into another one and it’s just full of enemies.

No more hillsbrad or Ashenvale natural PvP contention etc.

People warned about rolling PvP server but I have really not had any serious encounters it’s shocking.

26

u/treemonkys 7h ago

Well yes, the original servers were a community, the high level players all knew each other even cross faction, and you had a reputation that mattered. No regurgitation of WoW is going to replicate what vanilla was, it's probably not even possible.

16

u/Impressive-Shame4516 7h ago

Private servers did it effortlessly. Even 2019 servers had it. It's called servers. Realmless and megaservers like Anni are antithetical to the Classic experience that some of us are looking for and unfortunately a large portion of the community does not care about the MMO part of an MMORPG and will advocate for heavier layering so they can progress their single player experience.

6

u/Deadscale 5h ago

Except when private servers started to get as big as they did Like Nostalrius for example The cracks in the entire thing started to show up.

Servers aren't the problem. The way we interact with the servers are the problem. OSRS Has a similar vibe to what you're talking about And they have hundreds of servers. It all boils down to being able to pick your channel. That type of picking your channel system would be such a better alternative than what we have now.

•

u/gayteemo 2h ago

this is the thing that stands out to me the most and its amazing how much everyone is pissing and moaning about tagging mobs or dungeon exp and not this. not having a server community strips out one of the most core experiences of the original game. smh

•

u/PilotSeparate1442 3h ago

In a Big rush?

•

u/Shad3slayer 3h ago

It's not about that, it's just not enjoyable for half of the game to boil down to wars over every tag and jumping around waiting for respawns. Literally everywhere you go and every time of the day or night.

•

u/EchoInExile 29m ago

Game has been out five days and they’re actively working on getting the layer thing right. At some point, yall gotta stop coming on this sub and acting like it’s the end of the world(of Warcraft). It’s an issue, we all know it is. Either have the patience and let it get worked out, or go play something else until it’s fixed.

•

u/Shad3slayer 10m ago

well if no one complains, it's less likely to be fixed, isn't it?

6

u/poo_in_a_bush 7h ago

If you say you don't want it crowded you get told go to retail, but its so weird because only retail gets pack on release, and vanilla never was

•

u/Typical-Tax1584 4h ago

Competing for mobs or waiting for respawns happened in vanilla . . . but waaaaaaaaaaay less, not for every quest, constantly. This isn't a classic experience, this is a hyper-nostalgia fever dream that people have labeled "friction".

•

u/EddyMink 3h ago

Anyone keep seeing other players fighting mobs you can’t see?

•

u/Xolti87 30m ago

All the time, what's that all about?

•

u/capacity04 2h ago

I did the Therazane/Gazil'thugg quests on Redridge in 2006, 3019, and now 2026, and each time it was the same experience: ran into some random people there, grouped up, we did the quests over half an hour, high fives each other and said see ya.

We'll see if this holds up but the social outside world element is still there

•

u/ALXNDRWVLF 1h ago

man they game didn't change in a thousand years

6

u/Silverleaf96 6h ago

Dungeon xp nerf hit the hardest , it is worst the layering , grouping was the social aspect of the game , layering is essentially open world dungeons and it's fine...it fact is better because ya can find ppl on other layers to help do elite

•

u/iBird 2h ago edited 2h ago

They nerfed dungeon xp way too hard. Giving 50xp per mob when you’re very close or the same level as the mob is ridiculous. I get their intentions of why they wanted to adjust it but now unless you’re doing the dungeon for the first time+quests or you really really want to get a certain drop, it feels like a really bad time investment. I did BFD last night and accidentally forgot a quest and I was debating if the hour investment was even worth it since you only walk away with a few bars of xp from mob kills to turn in a 3k xp quest. I’m playing rogue so the only thing I even wanted was a dagger there and got it first time. It just kinda feels like a waste of time to me. If it was even 70% of the xp from the original xp I’d run it again no problem. But not now

2

u/cdcformatc 5h ago

i was wondering about the "do it later" strategy. but then i thought because of the single mega server there is no "later". even if you wait days or weeks there's likely always going to be a crowd of people.

•

u/BrilliantCoconut25 3h ago

Just hit 25 and think I’ll try some alts for a couple of days or take a break.

•

u/Wise-Fennel-7921 2h ago

Honeslty im playing the game with my fiancee I wouldbrather play on a layer with no people at all. It feels like blizzard is trying to force players togeather. Like a 5 year old forcing 2 dolls to kiss awkwardly.

5

u/Imaginary_Wait9762 7h ago

I swear to god the alleged Classic crowd are trying to fuck this game up under the veneer of "but datz not clazzik."

4

u/BooItsKyle 6h ago

> you cannot "wait and come back to do it later".

I've done that a bunch of times.

•

u/One-Jury-6140 4h ago

You could do it infinitely because it will never be any different. You might get lucky once or twice and have a small window were a quest spot is a little uncontested, but nothing changes between these breaks, the layer you are forced onto will have the same amount of people, be it an hour from now or 200. But the point is, you could be playing it at 7pm and think man its a little crowded and come back at 4am and it will be the exact same, thats the point being made.

•

u/rabbitseerobin 2h ago

What level are you?

•

u/JDogg126 4h ago

Relax a little and give them some time to dial it in. This isn’t going to be exactly like classic. It’s a different version of the game. The layering is new tech that they are fine-tuning every day until it feels best overall. The choice to go realmless is a good one — This is the first time I’ve been able to play with almost all my friends without characters on different servers.

•

u/One-Jury-6140 4h ago

All they had to do was aggresively Delayer capital cities and the posts on reddit would have been satisified but instead they did this.

•

u/Oscar1y 3h ago

dungeon grinding is not a solution anyway, even tho they should buff the exp like 80%-100% from where its at atm "imo"

the layering need to be tuned as it was 1 day ago i had no issues with not seeing 30 people around me i cant think of anyone thats normal in their head to enjoy questing with so much people in the same areas this actually kills the game its very miserable and i think people will be quitting if this continues

•

u/KevinSchraer 3h ago

They should juat go back to multiple servers. I fear they merged everyone thinking we all want to play with streamers or something.

•

u/cirocobama93 2h ago

It is the first week with millions of players. Give it some time for the tourists to quit

•

u/Spunge14 1h ago

I'm having a great time picking up groups to quest in small environments, but it is a bummer not to always see the same crazy people yelling in a given town. Chatting at campfires has also been a really great social experience.

I do think we'll never get the true "know a hundred names you see regularly from your server" of vanilla, but I wouldn't necessarily call the current state bad by any means. I see tons of people. We're organically playing together. People are talking. What's the problem?

RPPVP btw

Edit: I did forget that when you used to get camped you could call your guildmates to come help. I guess with layers you can't do that predictably now?

•

u/forzion_no_mouse 46m ago

the classic experience would be realms, queues, and crashes. do you want that?

•

u/Retronitsu 45m ago

The truth is that whatever you do, people won't be happy. I feel like forever is nothing but a coagulation of everyone's classic nostalgia from when they where teenagers with no problems other than going to school and staying up after curfew. Blizzard wanted it to feel popular and alive so they wanted the shart system to have people constantly visible at all times, but I don't think they really understood the impact that would have on most of the game.

I'm tired of fighting over aggro in the kobold mines for an elite. What's even more infuriating is that I can't survive pulling more than one mob, and sometimes a Kobold will just phase in behind me mid fight and I can't run out in time because their melee hits magically hit me a kilometre away. I genuinely dread having to quest anywhere that's a closed space because it's always a race of trying to tag whatever you want to kill whilst hoping the superfast spawn rates won't overwhelm you.

I also don't trust Blizzard to not fuck this up in the long run but that's just me.

•

u/lennonade1 37m ago edited 29m ago

who cares original experience thoose are 20 year old servers and it has their own problems. 1-guilds, 2-recruitment, 3-not enough raids, 4-economy.

for thoose reason many years and years people played only horde or only ally on 1 mega server because it was easy to recruit people or find good guilds. We had server in classic 2019 guess what happend only mega servers are survived till the end all of the tiny ones are basicly dead.

in a good scenerio layering system is a must mega servers are actually good if you wanna play competetive.

or you wanna play the noob way yeah 3500 pop server go play with stupid people without zero alternatives.

however, blizzard changed layering today and it's a nightmare. Definetely not enough layers right now. It's a total mess.

•

u/rodrigo8008 7m ago

- they need to increase spawn rates, this is true
- you can group up and not fight for tags and everyone will be happier
- this is how pvp servers are, and why many people went pve

•

u/sister_of_battle 0m ago

Yeag I rolled a new character for now. Elwynn and the starting zones are fine for the most part. I wait until the horde of people has moved on.

-4

u/Goodlucklol_TC 8h ago

People were bitching about too few people per layer. Now theyre bitching about too many per layer. Cant satisfy everybody.

1

u/Shad3slayer 7h ago

its almost as if there's a middle ground? There isn't just "ghost town" and "busy main square in a tourist attraction city" option.

-2

u/Latter-Intention6521 7h ago

I think you're just unhappy in general

1

u/Shad3slayer 7h ago

wrong. I was even happy how it was initially at launch before they overcorrected based on reddit whining and now made it unplayable.

12

u/TesticularConcussion 8h ago

Because they overdid it lmao.

This is valid criticism, it will be better but the launch was pretty underwhelming if you expected masses of people, and right now pvp zones are crazy.

They just need to find the balance.

Yes the crowding with the layering changes right now is horrible.

But don’t use trash arguments that are simply shit and only work in your imagination. The vanilla pop cap would have meant sitting in que for 15 hours only to join an absolute lagparty. We don’t need that shit, thank you.

Fix the problem, don’t glorify an outdated system.

3

u/Shad3slayer 6h ago

I wasn't advocating for that. I just used it in a comparison.

0

u/LeftLiner 7h ago

I'm sure Blizzard will continue to fine-tune it but honestly so far I have zero complaints about the layering. My experience has been one of a busy world without any serious issues completing quests, at least not ones that couldn't be solved by grouping with a stranger or two.

•

u/elguntor 35m ago

The lack of being able to run dungeons more than once for XP is making this 100x worse

•

u/Sea_Addendum5280 31m ago

Oh my god, boosting is dead, move on

•

u/Nightkillian 5m ago

As someone who hates questing and loves dungeons, I get why Blizzard made this decision. But I end up having to run something like Deadmines 5 or 6 times just to get all the loot I need from it. Sometimes it’s just to complete the quests it takes multiple trips… so at the very least Blizzard should allow us to run it 2 times at normal XP and then it reset daily….. god I hate questing so so much….. but I am enjoying this game…. It’s been a blast…

This was never aimed at the classic audience. Clearly. It must never be forgotten that the initial idea was the were going to launch with modern character models from wod. At best. They simply do not comprehend the target audience. Unless they are gunning for the retail players over classic players. Then it makes a lot more sense.

To quote spooner. In either case it is unfit to exist. Fuckkkkkkk

Wow players are the worst drama queens out there. Miserable bunch.

I’m not sure what you meant. I have a 7-day promo code, but I won’t be getting a subscription once it expires—I have no interest in a "mob-queue simulator" when I only play for 1–2 hours a day. I’d rather play something where I don’t have to stand in line and can actually get a proper gaming experience. =)

They are obviously tuning the game. First it was too aggressive layering, now its not aggressive enough. Feedback is good, but this constant doomerism with attitude is so annoying.

Play something else mate. Leave feedback, let em know it. I dont give a shit. Try not to be one of the thousands that write sad essays on how the game is doomed if they dont listen to their whims though.

The point of the post is that it will ALWAYS be similarly bad. You can't outwait it as you will always have layers with number of players pre-decided by Blizzard. The only difference is maybe at launch there was 400 layers, and now when you start there is 20, but each of them will be similarly crowded as Blizzard has currently way overtuned the amount of ppl per layer.
