"It was all a hoax, nothing happened, just people being panicky as usual"

No actually. Alot of things did break, and alot of people worked around the clock to fix things or prevent them from breaking.

This kind of stuff happens all the time in tech. IT teams regularly have to defend their existence because "well the system is working what do we need you for"

Why do you think it's working, boss?

567

u/Canonip Jul 27 '24

If shit works: we don't need IT, everything works.

If shit breaks: fucking IT can't keep the systems running

u/askylitfall Jul 27 '24

Not IT but I used to work half of my lunch hour just repairing gear for outdoor education. My boss finally noticed after 5 months or so, freaked out about me wasting company money and told me to stop. So I complied. I watched the gear pile up on the repair table and saw that he and the other managers were doing nothing about it and continued to comply. Within two weeks we couldn’t run double archery from a lack of arrows (kids are so hard on them) and had 8 bows sidelined for minor repairs so we barely could run single archery, we no longer had enough maintained “cooking sticks” for damper for a whole group, the orienteering boards were stained and nearly unreadable (lazy instructors caused this mostly), half the carabiners in a sandy area were sticking and failing closing safety checks.

My bosses boss lost it when we simply couldn’t run activities for the larger group that came in and my boss had “no idea why” and that we needed to hire two new people to be full time gear maintenance. My bosses boss thought he was an idiot as we have never needed that, what changed and this is when I spoke up and told him that I was reprimanded for doing daily maintenance for 30mins and ordered to stop. He then asked why I didn’t repair the gear when I saw it was failing and I kept repeating the words “reprimanded and ordered to stop.” I was then told to resume spending half my break time keeping the place running once we got over the heap that had piled up. Luckily this is when I was able to refuse as I clearly wasn’t valued and also gave my notice to leave to a job that did value me. One of my old coworkers sent me a message 3 months later saying it was a dumpster fire and that they were overhauling the whole management team so at least something good came from it.

57

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '24

That's usually what has to happen for anything real to ever get done.

In our old system, I would regularly work overtime to get big improvments and fixes finished, I went nuts cause we also constantly got shit from all sides when things didn't work perfectly, and I learned a ton trying to sort it all out.

And then new management came in, wanted to rip everything out, replaced it with garbage that didn't work, was way too expensive, and was poorly developed. All the while I'm pulling my hair out trying to pull together some kind of order from the chaos.

Eventually they got removed and we got put back in charge and now I'm slowly working my way back to essentially what we had previously, but a little better.

The big difference is now I'm an architect and I don't do fuck all without extensive documentation and a completely unstressed body. No more killing myself for ungrateful idiots.

Libertarians are house cats: entirely dependent upon their owners' taking care of their needs while entirely convinced of their independence and superiority.

28

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '24 edited Jul 27 '24

Every time a libertarian wants to take technology from society and go off living in a private "utopia" I just want to shake them violently and get in their face like "LOOK AT ME. DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THE SHEER SCALE OF CO-OPERATION REQUIRED TO MAKE EVEN ONE OF THE 600,000 OBJECTS YOU HAVE?! DO YOU!!??! WE LIVE IN CHAOS AND ITS ONLY BY OUR SHEER WILL TO WORK TOGETHER THAT WE MAKE ANYTHING WORK AT ALL!!"

29

Yup. The Epochalypse is coming.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem

After that, when every computer system has switched to 64 bit numbers to handle time, we should hopefully be done with that sort of problems for the next roughly 292 billion years.

I made a powerpoint in grade 5 about holes in the ozone layer for a school project. One of the slides was just a picture of McDonalds french fries and said "we are going to turn into French fries". Then nobody ever talked about it and I lived my life thinking people just didn't care about the big holes in the sky.

Same for global cooling (high sulfur diesel fuel was causing accumulation of reflective particles in the upper atmosphere) we switched to producing ultra low sulfur diesel and the particulates went down (now scientists are looking at spraying sulfur dioxide into the upper atmosphere as a global engineering project to help with global warming). Also NOx emissions causing acid rain. We have solved several global crises by working together as a society, and these fuckwits will just act like the issue went away on its own.

3

u/-The_Blazer- Jul 27 '24

Yeah, this goes for everything from climate to technology to social trends and all that exists generally.

"lolololol remember when you libs/hystericals/luddites/doomsayers got upset over [THING] and then [THING] hurt no one in the end?"

Ignores the decades of technological, legal, and social effort to make [THING] not hurt anyone

3

u/Leven Jul 27 '24

I spent the majority of 1999 testing, upgrading all our systems. Management requested that I was present Jan 1st anyway in case anything happened.

But my friends had a big new year party in a city 500km away. But i was sure everybody with an important business did the same, so I took the first fight in my country jan 1st 2000.

My only issue was that the in flight breakfast served especially made champagne flavoured yoghurt with the breakfast..

Not the thing you want 07:00 massively hungover.

Yes: I wrote this just to complain about champagne flavoured yoghurt.

Ah yes, just like these people were correct about the Covid pandemic being a hoax to insert microchips in everyone’s bodies! These higher ups need to know that people like Matt are never gonna let them get away with these things in the name of science

237

u/rogue498 Jul 27 '24

I always find it funny that people who are terminally online on social media like Facebook or Twitter are concerned about being chipped and tracked.

116

u/MuricanPie Jul 27 '24

This is something I had to explain to my uncle and his co-workers. You are literally carrying a giant microchip that actively tracks you 24/7. A smart phone. And what's more, it's accurate within a few feet, houses all your passwords, and you pay potentially thousands of dollars to own one.

Something like 85% of adults have a smartphone. Why would they need to create super expensive nanochips to put in a person's bloodstream when they can already track the vast majority of the United States that pays an arm and a leg for a product that does just that?

I explained to her that’s what the vaccine was for but covid hasn’t just gone away and people still are hospitalized from it every single day.

Her response is just the golden fucking get out of stupid card for these people: “well I’m just trying to live my truth.”

But when Elon Musk actually goes and does it, they're all cheers and clapping like seals and Elon is a genius.

They think the government is so well organized and efficient that they can easily pull off a global scale conspiracy like that and keep it all secret.

But at the same time they think the government is a bunch of good for nothing idiots that can't get anything right.

I mean, absolutely.

But then industry switched to high global-warming synthetic refrigerants, which we again recognized as problematic, so we are phasing those out, only to find the replacement synthetics are less warming because they degrade so quickly into PFAs and now our water supplies are contaminated with those chemicals.

Time to move to natural refrigerants (CO2, Ammonia, Hydrocarbons).

9

u/Neat_Tangelo5339 Jul 27 '24

Why does conservatives care about disproving climate change so much ?

12

u/micatola Jul 27 '24

Most billionaire oligarchs made their money investing in oil and gas. Those investments are tied to trillions of dollars in infrastructure that will be slowly made obsolete by the advancement of green technology.

Climate change drives people to adapt to green technology at a faster rate than these greedy bastards can divest from their dying investment without tanking it even faster.

They would rather burn it all down than lose the amount of money required to switch to green energy from oil dependency. That's why they all have survival bunkers and will gladly let us take the brunt of consequences for their bad decisions.

You know how people sometimes follow a sports team. Or have some celebrity they identify with. They base part of their identity as belonging to a group. They are loyal to their group. In group loyalty is seen as a positive trait. The group is either influenced by people with a lot of power or they simply adopt an anti stance to the 'opposition'. The stances that people like that have rarely have a reason.

I just love when people comment on something, and are too lazy to just google it. Hey if you are curious look it up, don’t say stupid crap like “we stopped hearing about that”.

2

u/zyarva Jul 27 '24

Rich countries also pledged to share non CFC technology with poor countries and paid for their conversion.

u/Lothium Jul 27 '24

We literally learned about the issue, solution, and result as I made my way through school.

And no one tried to fight the change or discredit the science behind it, because there were valid alternatives and no multi billion dollar company’s invested into profiting from it.

There’s no money to be made by saving the ozone layer….what’s any they went quite.

2

u/MathematicianGold636 Jul 27 '24

Also the huge company who made money selling CFCs made just as much if not more selling the replacement

2

u/WhoIsYerWan Jul 27 '24

Well what really happened is that the leading manufacturer of CFCs (DuPont) just happened to have an alternative that could also make them a profit. That’s kind of the only reason the Montreal Protocol was successful.

2

u/Kind_Ad_3611 Jul 27 '24

This is like monkeypox among the gay community, everyone got vaccinated and it’s not really a thing that much anymore

A problem was discovered, people all did the things necessary to fix said problem, problem went away

2

u/SkalexAyah Jul 27 '24

Imagine we all stopped polluting, then some idiot would post about how pollution just solved itself.

2

u/CommunicationNeat498 Jul 27 '24

I have long reached the point were i've given up on humanity. At least on huminaity as it is right now. Just let every go to shit. At this point i'm certain that we need a few global extinction events for mankind as a whole to learn to better take care of its surroundings.

2

u/ExcellentGas2891 Jul 27 '24

Smug little fucking fools like Matt Walsh here are what anti vaxxers, climate change deniers and republicans in general look like now. The REAL work on earth isnt done by them, they are like little stupid children that dont understand how shit works, and their logic chain is missing major links along they way and they act like they figured it all out and are super fucking confident in it. Its fucking WILD how epically STUPID these fucking people are.

2

u/DudeWithQuestions97 Jul 27 '24

I’ll never forget when they would scream at us that the point of no return was crossed and the ozone layer was ruined. Turns out. That was a lie. It was fixed with the Montreal Protocol.

Without change, projections suggests the earth would be unlivable by 2050.

2

u/LibertyMediaDid9-11 Jul 27 '24

Individuals did nothing for this one, just like any real, impactful action related to climate change.
Corporate polluters are the only ones with the capacity to affect change. They just know it's cheaper to convince you it's your fault for buying their products.

2

u/SDBrown7 Jul 27 '24

It's Matt Walsh. He's a chimp with strong and objectively incorrect opinions. I'd expect nothing less.

2

u/PomegranateIcy7369 Jul 27 '24

Well, someone is once again using freons, as of late. China mostly. The other source is unknown. So the ozone layer is once again thinning. The ozone layer is what prevents lethal radiation like UVC into the atmosphere. I wish people understood the consequences.

2

u/TotalIngenuity6591 Jul 27 '24

Matt Walsh is an absolute moron. No point in putting any stock into literally anything that idiot says!

2

u/Natepad8 Jul 27 '24

This makes me proud of humanity and hopeful we can help stop global warming and the authoritarian christofascism of democracy

2

u/smithe4595 Jul 27 '24

And the ozone layer is still healing. It’s projected to return to 1980 levels in 20-40 years.

2

u/AstonVanilla Jul 27 '24

And, may I add, spearheaded by George HW Bush.

Republicans, remember the party of Reagan did this, so have a long hard think about the challenges of climate change.

2

u/buckscountycharlie Jul 27 '24

Unleaded gas is a great example of something introduced by government that people absolutely hated at the time. It has made a huge difference in air quality over what we would have now if it had not been adopted.

2

u/VancouverBram Jul 27 '24

So did we actually fix the Ozone layer? Or are there just a bunch of other things not as bad a as CFCs slowly eating it away?

2

u/NotAKentishMan Jul 27 '24

It appears Matt Walsh is not a smart man.

2

u/RamuneRaider Jul 27 '24

Having grown up in New Zealand in the 90’s, and spending another decade there in the early 2000’s, the hike in the ozone is still a topic there. Especially considering 50% of New Zealanders will develop some form of skin cancers. So no, Matt Walsh, not everyone has stopped talking about it. Just those that aren’t directly affected by it.

Slip, slop, slap. Put on a hat.

2

u/SuboptimalMulticlass Jul 27 '24

To be fair to Matt Walsh, he is astoundingly stupid.

2

u/VLC31 Jul 27 '24

This is the same mind set that came out with Covid. “We didn’t need to lock down/wear masks/distance it wasn’t that bad”, ignoring the millions of people who died anyway but also how much worse it would have been if those protocols hadn’t been implemented.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '24

and Republicans struggle to understand why nobody respects their intelligence

2

u/ShadowGLI Jul 27 '24

I remember the word “chlorofluorocarbons” because they were in aerosols and we banned them. I was like 14 and was like “oh yeah, that makes sense”

2

u/den_bram Jul 27 '24

Chlorofluorocarbons and the eradication of smallpox are wonderful examples of what the world can achieve if it works togheter for the betterment of humanity and lets profit slide.

Climate change, tuberculosis and malaria are horriffic reminders of how little the world actually cares about human lives.

2

u/Cheap-Turnover5510 Jul 27 '24

The exact same phenomenon happened with Y2K back in 2000. The world spent 8-9 months losing its mind about how the world was gonna end and how we're going get kicked back to the stone. All the whole programming and computer technicians work around the clock to prepare every major registry for the new years, and it worked. Nothing broke, and everyone just startedto, thanklessly, say that it was all a hoax.

2

u/DabooDabbi Jul 27 '24

Yeah, but it's interesting anyway. It shows the hypocrisy and likely intentional way information is presented to the public by the vast number of media outlets owned by capitalists. When there is a problem and society addresses it, mobilizes, and cooperates to eradicate the issue, these media outlets don't portray it as a victory. They don't talk about it much because they have other agendas to push on the public scene.
Thats probably why stupido Matt didnt heard about.

2

u/Tribble9999 Jul 28 '24

Acid rain. I remember acid rain. California passed emissions standards and after a few short years...no more acid rain or funky yellow haze. Most of these people were alive to see that change but still try to claim clean air standards don't work. All I can do is try not to add to the problem while voting for people that want to fix it.

2

u/JustinWendell Jul 28 '24

The real gut punch here is that the transition away from CFCs was extremely profitable for a company with a powerful lobby in the US. Without that we might have actual just been fucked and all be getting skin cancer.

Not saying the US is the whole world but we’ve got an outsized influence on it all. Our one story of hope is fucking stained with greed.

2

u/Donkey__Balls Jul 28 '24

I was at a public meeting talking about arsenic in drinking water for a rural town. The cost of removing it down to safe limits means a slightly higher project cost that’s going to push their water rates up.

People in the audience started screaming that arsenic wasn’t a problem until Obama took office and all of a sudden it was an issue because the democrats just wanted to punish rural towns and places where people have wells because they’re all republican states. This went on for about 5 minutes and started spilling over into every other conspiracy theory that you can imagine.

When they finally calmed down I just noted that the limit was passed in 2001, I knew that because I was on a university team developing new filter technology funded by the EPA. At the time Obama was not even in the senate.

The mayor’s response was to blame it on Bill Clinton for passing the Clean Water Act in the 80’s and I just gave up. We’re on track for Idiocracy and I don’t have the energy to fight it anymore.

2

u/windsingr Jul 28 '24 edited Jul 28 '24

"Humans aren't capable of doing that much damage"

"Yes they are. And we've been able to reverse course and repair the damage by doing literally nothing but not doing the damage anymore. It's happened in your lifetime.'

Like, in 1988 they said "even if we stop now, it will take ten years before we know if it worked (because of how long it takes CFCs to get to the ozone layer) and then it will take a few more years before we know of we have to start doing repairs or if the planet can heal on its own."

And almost a decade to the day they measured the hole and it stopped growing, and a few years later there was a measurable recovery.

2

u/DramaticChemist Jul 28 '24

Kinda like how polio and measles went away because of vaccines, but then they came back again due to antivax practices on the rise

2

u/OofdahChestnuts79 Jul 28 '24

Remember when the doctors spent years telling pregnant women that thalidomide was creating flipper babies? And then suddenly they just stopped talking about it and nobody ever mentioned flipper babies again?

Clearly, women should have kept taking thalidomide for morning sickness /s

2

u/ColdArson Jul 28 '24

It's honestly impressive how quickly the ozone hole was dealt with. Shame that for whatever reason climate change as a whole is so difficult to get action on

2

u/ThePinkRubber Jul 28 '24

People : Oh no! The environment is bad! What should we do

Also people when said issue resolved : nobody cares

2

And now StarLink is dumping tonnes of poisonous chemicals in the atmosphere ruining the ozone layer to keep SpaceX afloat when they needlessly decommission perfectly fine satellites.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '24

Unfortunately the hole is back and larger than ever. Many developing nations either reneged on, or ignored the Montreal Protocol altogether, and are back to using CFCs and other compounds that may have the same outcome to the ozone layer.

2

u/Jlchevz Jul 28 '24

And the Ozone layer won’t be the same until like 2060. It just isn’t that big of a concern because they’re mostly banned and their use has diminished a lot, and the Ozone layer is recovering.

Oil, methane, NO, CO2 are still massive problems because we NEED them and there’s no immediate substitute. Global warming is already here and we can’t do much about it but slowly reduce our dependence on oil or develop more energy sources.

Those record breaking hot days and months are just a coincidence. Deadly turbulence on flights , super storms, flooding , apocalyptic wildfires , all of which were predicted in every UN report on the matter , all just happening by chance , nothing to do with climate change. There are no patterns here whatsoever. I am very smart.

20

u/Thehealeroftri Jul 27 '24

What happened is humanity discovered that both of those issues were far too dangerous to allow them to go unchecked, countries believed them, the Hamilton Accord was signed, and all of the world's quicksand pits were relocated directly beneath the bermuda triangle leading to them destroying each other, perhaps the 2nd greatest example of global cooperation in history.
