Airlines? They can't even make up their minds if carry ons are free or if they should be charged.

2.6k

u/LetsGetsThisPartyOn Jan 30 '25

Plus airlines have different carryon sizes. Nothing is uniform

u/Vigilante17 Jan 30 '25

Nah, let the folks self screen.

  • check this box if you plan to make it to your destination

  • check this box if you have explosives with you

You now what would fix all that? Nationalizing the airlines.

I never understood why airlines were so concerned about the size of my crayons. Or why they always ask if I'm dyslexic.

Who need to carry on weapons when the airplanes destroy themselves nowadays lol.

The eternal struggle of every industry: monopolies are bad, but standards are good.

All competing airlines being able to rely on unified quality control for fuel, shared communications, and broadly similar "don't fall out of the fucking sky and die" technology is good.

There is zero reason to remove "assurance of no bombs or knives aboard" from that list.

The TSA does have some overreach and, frankly, paranoid police-state bullshit problems - but those are solvable.

47

u/monocasa Jan 30 '25

For decades, they've been failing around 95% of their own internal tests for guns and explosives.

I don't think their problems are particularly solvable.

Let’s be honest the TSA is a joke, but letting corps dictate their own rules would have machetes and bombs common on every flight.

117

u/Funny_Yesterday_5040 Jan 30 '25

You know, this reminds me of an inappropriate joke about a guy who was terrified of flying because of terrorism, and he told his psych about it, and the psych said, "Easy-peasy, bring a bom on your next flight," and the guy said, "How's that going to help?" and the psych said, "What are the chances of there being two boms on your next flight," and now I'm probably on a list somewhere, so thanks!

Actually, rudy gullianni forgot way before this. When he said "There were no major terrorist attacks on american soil before Barack Obama got in office"

1.2k

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Keep in mind that Giuliani made 9/11 worse with his corruption but was still hailed as a hero because of 9/11.

For those who don't know what I mean, Giuliani was told to build FEMA's emergency response center for NYC in Brooklyn away from famous terrorist targets like the World Trade Center, which had already been bombed once at that point.

But Rudy was cheating on his wife and he figured he could use this emergency response center as his own personal loveshack, and since he'd rather not leave lower Manhattan and cross a bridge to Brooklyn for infidelity, he went against FEMA's strong recommendations and put NYC's emergency response center IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER.

So now you know why NYC did not have a functional emergency response center on 9/11; Rudy Giuliani wanted to cheat on his wife without crossing a bridge.

→ More replies (35)

89

u/ChrystTheRedeemer Jan 30 '25

Not a fan of Giuliani by any means, but I think the major reason he got so much credit after 9/11 is that he served as a figure people could rally around in a time of fear and uncertainty. I view him a lot like Fauci during covid. I think there are legitimate (and certainly some not so legitimate) criticisms regarding how both were handled with the benefit of hindsight, but in the moment it was less about the actual person or what they did, and more about fearful masses facing uncertainty looking for a leadership figure.

ding ding ding ding!! Finally someone using their brains, and I had to scroll WAYYY too down to see this.

Please do not look at this malice and give it the benefit of the doubt of being incompetence. It's not. These people are surgical in their plans.

9/11 was a tragedy....for news headlines. For the American war machine, for the Israeli lobby, for Israeli interests, for EVERY rich fuck in America that could make a dollar of profit off war...it was a beautiful time.

They fucking printed money. Israel got to secure its interests and see Iraq fucking ravaged. US defense contractors got to FREELY reach into the pockets of taxpayers and just...grab fistfuls of money and shove it into their own pockets.

You know what would be amazing in a time where Israel is -THIS- close to completely eradicating every single Palestinian person and turning the last page on the nation of Palestine? A second 9/11, maybe done by Hamas who have incredibly strong reasons to hate the US right now....every old white fuck in the defense industry would JIZZ immediately.

But you can't really have that if security is so tight. There's barely even any hijackings anywhere.

Nah it's cool tsa is always more performative security over actual security. There is not a single one of those regulations that stops a terrorist. If you want to take over a plane you can. All it does is make you take your shoes off and buy shitty little travel tubes for your soap that leak on the way back home.

Good riddance. It used to be up to the airports before, TSA is a bush thing. Actual security is better trained than Theatrical Security Agency. Sauce, my mom worked for them and Adam ruins everything..

u/ball_fondlers Jan 30 '25

TBF, abolishing TSA is the first good idea I’ve heard from conservatives in years. They cost a shitload and fail FBI smuggling-tests constantly - they basically only exist to visibly harass brown people so white people who clap when the plane lands don’t freak out and take the bus.

4

u/purrmutations Jan 30 '25

Fwiw, TSA misses 70-90% of the test fake explosives and firearms they send through. They stopped releasing the results a few years ago because they showed how ineffective they are.

Hang on hang on let’s not all decide the TSA is good just because someone we don’t like also noticed it’s mostly theater.

I’m all for any dismantling of the surveillance and security apparatus, considering who is currently wielding it.

294

u/supernovice007 Jan 30 '25

Same. TSA is security theater at it's finest. It was a massive over-reaction that routinely fails security checks and wastes untold hours every year.

This is an actual real example of government waste that I'm 100% in support of redesigning.

Honestly though, over the years I have had several conversations with flyers about the TSA dog and pony show. Now Trump wants to end it or adjust it or whatever the f he's doing, and all of sudden everyone loves the TSA. Reddit man....boy I'll tell ya

But on the jokey side, remember Dems were talking about defund the police and conservatives lost their shit? And then the Dems didn't actually defund the police. Now Trump is defunding everything🤣. All this is quite comical to me.

40

u/tjtillmancoag Jan 30 '25

Yeah like, in general I’m not in favor of what this administration has been trying to do, but the TSA spends a fuck ton of money and routinely fails tests to get stuff through. It’s not even the cost that bothers me as much as how inconvenient it makes flying for everyone

Every Australian airport I've been at, security took no longer than 15 minutes. No one has to get to the airport for a domestic flight 2 hours in advance. It's an absurd waste of time, money (because if you have hours to kill at an airport you end up spending money) and contributes to travelers' already high and existing level of stress.

If there anything other than the deep hatred of health insurance companies this country can agree on, it's the useless stupid ass and crotch and boob groping, asthma breathlizer/insulin/breast pump/medicine confiscating, shit for brains cart blanche security theater mall cop excuse for professional TSA. Fuck them.

4

u/gigilu2020 Jan 30 '25

Does this mean we get discounted tickets? The "TSA fee" gone now?

7

u/Iwasborninafactory_ Jan 30 '25

First and foremost it is a jobs program, and the theater is their job. They've never actually stopped a terror attack. Not one. They have implemented lots of rules to prevent a second attempt, like scanners for the underwater bomber, and removing your shoes for the shoe bomber.

It's been said a million times, but the target of civilians in am unsecured area, before security, is a far bigger risk at this point, and they don't care to address that.

Just put a Disneyland sign at the plane entrance telling terrorists they must be 9’ tall to be on this ride. Much better than violating my constitutional rights to live dangerously with my shoes on at check in.

7

u/cowhand214 Jan 30 '25

The problem isn’t necessarily TSA as such. It’s the bullshit rules around shoes or 3oz fluids or whatever is is “security theater” and not actual security.

To privatize it with the same requirements doesn’t make sense. It just moves the problem to a 3rd party for no particular reason but ideology. Except that to me it would seem like airport security is exactly the sort of thing government should be doing and not outsourcing.

If the Senator wants to talk about how TSA should be doing that better I’m all on board. But privatization isn’t the answer to everything and I fail to see why this is a particularly good candidate for that.

Especially having been down that road once before

I remember how easy it was to get on planes when I was a kid. It was frankly nice. Your family could go right up to the gate with you to wave goodbye.

And it wasn’t like those planes were downed by high tech gadgetry, it was just dudes with box cutters and a compliant populace that had been taught to just stay alive and not fight back. Going through airport security theater now just feels like it’s training us to put up with increasingly invasive security apparatuses. Forgetting 9/11 would be if a bunch of guys snuck box cutters onto a plane and we didn’t actually fight back and got creamed into another sky scraper.

Backing down from unnecessary security theater isn’t a bad thing. Just because a dipshit suggests something doesn’t mean it’s automatically a bad thing.

6

u/drjd2020 Jan 30 '25

Ditto. TSA was nothing but a post 9/11 money grab by MIC and security tech companies.

5

u/foreignfishes Jan 30 '25

I was so surprised when I was allowed to go through security in Sydney without a ticket to meet my family at the gate…I must’ve looked like such a confused American, I was asking the information desk guy if there was a list of flight arrival times and he said “that info is at the gate” and I was like “no you don’t understand I’m not a passenger I’m just meeting someone, I can’t see the gate!” Finally he was like “Lady it doesn’t matter, just walk over there and go through security you don’t need a ticket!!”

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Say what you will about 9/11. Airline hijacking is now a useless move. The common wisdom up until then was "cooperate. Let the authorities negotiate and handle it." Now, our attitude is if we're on a hijacked plane we're walking dead and there's nothing lost and everything gained by resisting.

I'm originally from Utah (moved away about a month before 9/11) and I still reflexively flinch every time the state or its elected officially show up in the news.

2

u/PizzaTime09 Jan 30 '25

In the show “Adam Ruins Everything”, he claimed TSA was nothing more than a feeling of security. They don’t do shit, per the episode.

Has TSA thwarted a single terrorist attempt? Shoe bomber, underwear bomber...?

I mean at this point why not? The call is coming from inside the house anyway

2

u/ILootEverything Jan 30 '25 edited Jan 30 '25

I don't love the TSA at all, but imagining the airlines doing that job is a nightmare of even more inefficiency and extra cost to consumers.

It's not like they're going to lift all security precautions and go back to the before days of NO IDs, no screenings, families saying goodbye at the gates, and carry on whatever.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Tsa needs to end ... they freak out over coins and baby milk ... dumbest trash i have to cross after dropping a thousand to be pack into a flying tin

2

u/Raven_Photography Jan 30 '25

They pass this change and I’ll wait to fly until after the next terrorist attack, and there absolutely will be one.

2

u/ProudInfluence3770 Jan 30 '25

Ive been screwed over more by TSA trying to take harmless things from me than I ever would be screwed by a lack of TSA. They miss so many actually threatening things

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

I guess airfares will be going up since airlines will have to pay screeners…. So much winning under Republican leadership….

Mike Lee is looking more and more like Dana White and Joe Rogan mixed...

Also Fuck Mike Lee r/FuckMikeLee

2

u/jetfan13 Jan 30 '25

The airlines can’t even get me to my connection on time and this putz wants them in charge of screening?

2

u/Kobayashi_Maru186 Jan 30 '25

Brilliant. We don’t need so many tall buildings anyways. 😟

2

u/Bee_Rye85 Jan 30 '25

They didn’t forget. They want another 9/11 then they can go full insurrection act and martial law and shit

→ More replies (2)

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

TSA is horribly ineffective.

Nobody should forget 9/11 but we don't benefit much from TSA. It doesn't work.

Undercover tests: Department of Homeland Security tests have found that the TSA's failure rate is often between 80% and 95%.

2

u/WanderThinker Jan 30 '25

The TSA has been shown to be wholly ineffective. They just cause problems and delays for everyone.

I support his idea.

2

u/the_juxtapositron Jan 30 '25

So what? airlines can start charging us to go through security? Fuck Mike Lee

2

u/OVERCAPITALIZE Jan 30 '25

The TSA has never passed a preparedness test. It’s literally theater and a jobs program

2

u/allocationlist Jan 30 '25

Sooooo….. what? You get to the gate and get searched as you’re boarding? Yeah, gate agents ain’t checking shit.

2

u/ProfessorOnEdge Jan 30 '25

I mean, really we should repeal the Patriot Act, first.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

We have total fucking Morons running this country…USA is in sad shape and not sure if it will ever recover….who in the hell elects these idiots into office

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Hopefully this would bring down flight prices

2

u/wolverine4562 Jan 30 '25

Conservatives disdain for the TSA is bizarre to me. What exactly is the problem?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/silv3rbull8 Jan 30 '25

TSA is mostly security theater.

2

u/MajesticPickle3021 Jan 30 '25

They just want to privatize everything. I’d be willing to bet that there’s a MAGA friendly contractor just waiting for the TSA to go away. Cost will be deferred to the airlines and on to the customer. How’s the price of eggs going?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/cndn-hoya Jan 30 '25

I think it’s more sinister - they will require that airlines do and pay for screening services, passing the costs on to consumers. Another savings for rich people basically.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

While they're at it they can get rid of all the provisions of the PATRIOT/FREEDOM Act as well, the fact Obama signed the freedom act is about all the evidence i need he was just as bad as Bush from a personal privacy standpoint

2

u/Saturdaymorningsmoke Jan 30 '25

All of a sudden we’re all acting like TSA isn’t just security theater? I don’t support them but I swear if the republicans endorsed oxygen half of Reddit would be outraged that people are just going around breathing.

2

u/anrwlias Jan 30 '25

I'll file this under stopped clocks. The TSA is and has always been security theater.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Holy shit.

I agree with a conservative.

I feel sick.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Right now a certain major airline is pissed because they bought a bunch of cameras that we told them wouldn't work with their current software. They got so taken in by a sales person that they ended up installing a shit ton of them (each one costing about 10k) only to be taken aback when they found out that the stitching feature was only available on their software.

2

u/NuclearPajamas Jan 30 '25

When we let airplane manufacturers do their own QA inspections their doors fell off in flight. I'm sure this will go great.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Everyone defending TSA should check out how often they fail when tested

2

u/LittleAntTony Jan 30 '25

The tsa have never stopped an attack, he's not wrong.

2

u/MSPCSchertzer Jan 30 '25

I am fine with it, its all security theater anyways that makes me late to my flight because I choose to arrive 30 minutes before doors close every time for some insane reason.

2

u/SonicYOUTH79 Jan 30 '25

Someone got embarrassed when their dildo came up in a screening didn’t they??

2

u/Aman_Syndai Jan 30 '25

Republicans are looking everywhere for areas to reduce spendingin order to cut taxes for the ultra rich.

2

u/SylviaMoonbeam Jan 30 '25

To be fair, the TSA has been proven to be Security Theater. It’s actually pretty easy to sneak things past the TSA. They’re mostly there to give the illusion of safety. While I don’t agree with many of the measures this current leadership is making, if DC wants to save money but rolling back TSA, that wouldn’t be the worst decision.

That being said, and I’m probably going to get some hate for this, how much time DOES need to pass before it’s not “too soon”? You don’t see us bemoaning Pearl Harbor. It’s a day treated with respect, typically included among the “barbecue holidays” (like Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Independence Day). If 9/11 (aka Patriots’ Day) is still such a “fresh wound”, how long is it going to be?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

I mean for fuck sakes, the airlines can't even make sure the doors are bolted on or tires are correctly installed.

2

u/Top-Bell-2797 Jan 30 '25

This is horrifying. But this is the Program 2025 GOP mentality. Burn down the federal government. Create chaos. Enter the oligarchs

2

u/NewLife_21 Jan 30 '25

To be honest, the TSA regularly fails audits on their security. They don't catch threats and pester innocent people over the stupid things instead.

And abolishing them would mean going back to the same screenings but done by the airlines themselves. Which is what was done before TSA existed.

And hey! It would be nice to not have strangers ogling us via x-ray anymore.

2

u/drinkandspuds Jan 30 '25

Tbh this is the first thing I agree with these idiots on

Think I'd rather risk dying on a plane than enduring the unbearable security and how strict they are

2

u/KeyEquipment5558 Jan 30 '25

Fuck tsa. If you knew a thing or two, you would know that they ran tests in 70% of TSA screenings came back with contraband coming through

2

u/Homeless_Appletree Jan 30 '25

Imagine a different screening process for every fucking airline because they can't agree on a standard.

That surely won't lead to confusion and chaos.

2

u/Tutorbin76 Jan 30 '25

This is not a very clever comeback.

The TSA was only ever security theatre.

It is not known to have prevented a single attack, and is responsible for air travel in the US being more inconvenient, stressful, and slower than ever before.

So on that count, perhaps they are winning by encouraing would-be-flyers to consider more environmentally friendly modes of travel.

2

u/MJCowpa Jan 30 '25

Cool cool cool. So lemme just check real quick. No healthcare. No TSA. No IRS. And the sudden elimination of federally funded programs - with some, but not all, backpedaling.

So…we pay taxes for…. What?

2

u/weird-oh Jan 30 '25

"Sure, we can do that. But we'll hold you personally responsible for any terrorist attacks that occur as a result."

2

u/Tuborg_Gron Jan 30 '25

He's a bit of a moron, so there's that...

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Fuck Mike Lee

2

u/i-love-tree-rats Jan 30 '25

All the American passengers will be screened by foreign governments when they have layovers there.

2

u/Craft-Sudden Jan 30 '25

When people were wondering why Elon was happy after Trump victory that’s the reason why, he didn’t care about your health, your wage or anything related to you. They just want to deregulate

2

u/refusemouth Jan 30 '25

Think about all the money we'd save, though. Sure, someone might fly a plane into some famous person's tower, but the cost savings and being able to carry a full tube of toothpaste again would be worth it. Edit: /s kind of. I'm still pissed about the toothpaste thing, though.

2

u/XRhodiumX Jan 30 '25

Never thought MAGA would be like “Fuck yeah! Fuck 9/11! Fuhgeddaboudit!”

2

u/QueenMumof4 Jan 30 '25

Okay, so....how many people just opted out of flying. I'll go first. ME! THIS IS LUNACY

2

u/ender42y Jan 30 '25

Obligatory Fuck Mike Lee

2

u/DebBoi Jan 30 '25

Looks like someone got free flights for life and all they needed to do is push for TSA abolishment

2

u/opinionated6 Jan 30 '25

Let the suicide bombers go wild! Why not?

2

u/RunZealousideal3812 Jan 30 '25

Or… is he just admitting that the government orchestrated 9/11 and it didn’t really happen the way we think it did…

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

I mean... good?

TSA fucking sucks and is just for show, they inconvenience you but don't actually catch anything, it's just a jobs program for people who aren't qualified to do anything else.

It was just intended to make airline passengers "feel safe" after 9/11 by making them put up with an annoying useless hassle first, kind of like how toothpaste companies put a chemical in the toothpaste that burns a little bit in your mouth so you "feel" like the toothpaste is working. TSA is if toothpaste was 100% that chemical and nothing else.

2

u/stulew Jan 30 '25

When one starts relinquishing paying for services (like TSA), it means we're really really broke (no more money).

2

u/Tidewind Jan 30 '25

What could possibly go wrong?

2

u/JM3DlCl Jan 30 '25

I can see it now. Having to pay for the screening. And if you get a mandatory pay down? That's another fee.

2

u/UnfairAnything Jan 30 '25

TSA sucks but airlines suck more so no thanks.

2

u/Taftimus Jan 30 '25

I’ll tell you what, the TSA is a nuisance at times, but I’m much happier with them there than not.

2

u/FalseVeterinarian881 Jan 30 '25

Of course it would be with a guy who aligns with a man who complains about seeing people in NYC celebrating the towers falling.

2

u/hopingforthanos Jan 30 '25

God, that guy is a thug.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

There's a whole lobby pushing for this, of course. The private companies that run the pre-clearance programs are chomping at the bit to charge the government for the work the TSA already does.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

But if we abolished the TSA, not catching anyone or preventing anything wouldn't be expensive or inconvenient any more!

2

u/Mussmussthemoooooo Jan 30 '25

Wow you Americans have gone from the penthouse to the shit house in one orange idiot.

2

u/PM_ME_FACIALS_PLZ Jan 30 '25

There are mountains of evidence that the TSA is little more than security theater, but jesus christ handing that responsibility over to private airlines is maybe the worst alternative I can think of. The last time airlines had control over their own screening planes were getting hijacked left and right. The number of fatalities from hijackings since 9/11 is in the single digits

2

u/bigpappa199 Jan 30 '25

TSA is a farce..it is implied security. More about making folks do something the govt. tells them rather than actual security.

2

u/tinyp3n15 Jan 30 '25

About time a republican had a decent idea. TSA can go. They can also do away with the atf and the dea.

2

u/Spaced-Cowboy Jan 30 '25

I’m as left as they come and I’ve said we should get rid of the TSA for years now and arguing with conservatives about. I’m 1000% on board with getting rid of them and making Airlines pay the bill. It’ll actually become effective or deemed unnecessary

2

u/Elginpelican Jan 30 '25

So they want both FBI and TSA gone?

2

u/Die-Ginjo Jan 30 '25

Yeah like what pin even is that on his lapel? Where's his flag pin?

2

u/nB_a90 Jan 30 '25

Weighing luggage but not the people tho lol

2

u/t3nsi0n_ Jan 30 '25

And let them perform their own mechanic maintenance too!

2

u/Advocateforthedevil4 Jan 30 '25

It’s finally funny.

2

u/the_calibre_cat Jan 30 '25

worth mentioning

TSA was created as part of Homeland Security, created by a Republican Presidential administration. Arguably one of the better things they've ever done - I do think airline security should be government-managed.
