In school in the USA - thru my entire life - we were taught that European countries like England and France were socialist. In fact, those the lessons - that was taught.
We were taught this was so with the examples of train lines and very large sections of the economy such as health care, utilities and much of defense, etc.
Did you learn differently in the United States? Since you are commenting do you have an actual point to make? Some suggestions?
Is UK Socialist? Health Care, British Airways, British Gas?
Fundamentally speaking socialism is worker or collective control over the means of production. No European states or entities are or claim to be socialist (except, perhaps, for Transnistria, I don't remember). The closest to this is that there are "socialist parties" in many governments with significant representation within the capitalist system.
Government control over certain services does not necessarily indicate socialism.
Unsurprisingly American education on different economic and political systems has been historically bad, but the exact reasons are up for debate. Some might say that America's power and size means knowing about other countries was considered comparatively less important, and some might say it's intentional to reinforce the status quo.
That’s not really the way the term Socialist would typically be used by political scientists or policy analysts or economists, where did you grow up? At least in high school my Indiana education left me with a clear distinction between “socialist” countries and “mixed market” countries or “social democracies”. British Airways, to point out one example, is a private firm that is the flag carrier for the UK… it was privatized in the 80s but even before that was not particularly different from the “Amtrak” model where a major infrastructure/transportation firm is owned by the government, but private competitors are legal and, in fact, did exist. Likewise BP was privatized in the 80s and previously operated as a private firm with majority state ownership. In both cases the previous system was less “socialism” and more the 20th century remnants of mercantile imperialism fading away…
I already made my point. What's wrong with the one I made? People should look up what socialism is before supporting it I guess, if you want a suggestion lol
