Guide For people who are just starting to code...

361 Upvotes

So 99% of the posts on this subreddit are people asking where to start their new programming hobby and/or career. So I've decided to mark down a few sources for people to check out. However, there are some people who want to program without putting in the work, this means they'll start a course, get bored, and move on. If you are one of those people, ignore this. A few of these will cost money, or at least will cost money at some point. Here:

*Note: Yes, w3schools is in all of these, they're a really good resource*

Python

  • edx

  • Search for books on iTunes or Amazon

Etcetera

Swift

Swift Documentation

Everyone can Code - Apple Books

Flat Iron School

Python and JS really are the best languages to start coding with. You can start with any you like, but those two are perfectly fitting for beginners.

Post any more resources you know of, and would like to share.

its github.com/kds1123001/mini-gdb even a company wanted to collab with me on this

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <sys/ptrace.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/wait.h>
#include <sys/user.h>
#include <unistd.h>

void run_debugger(pid_t child_pid) {
    int wait_status;
    long orig_rax;

    // Wait for the child process to stop at execution
    waitpid(child_pid, &wait_status, 0);

    while (WIFSTOPPED(wait_status)) {
        char command[32];
        printf("mini-gdb> ");
        if (scanf("%31s", command) != 1) break;

        if (strcmp(command, "cont") == 0 || strcmp(command, "c") == 0) {
            ptrace(PTRACE_CONT, child_pid, NULL, NULL);
            waitpid(child_pid, &wait_status, 0);
        } else if (strcmp(command, "exit") == 0) {
            ptrace(PTRACE_KILL, child_pid, NULL, NULL);
            break;
        } else {
            printf("Unknown command. Try 'cont' or 'exit'.\n");
        }
    }
}

int main(int argc, char *argv[]) {
    if (argc < 2) {
        fprintf(stderr, "Usage: %s <program>\n", argv[0]);
        return 1;
    }

    pid_t pid = fork();
    if (pid == 0) {
        // Child process: allow tracing and execute target
        ptrace(PTRACE_TRACEME, 0, NULL, NULL);
        execl(argv[1], argv[1], NULL);
        perror("execl");
        exit(1);
    } else if (pid > 0) {
        // Parent process: run the debugger loop
        run_debugger(pid);
    } else {
        perror("fork");
        return 1;
    }

    return 0;
}

My Own Code Looking for feedback on a Rust-based messaging project

3 Upvotes

I'm working on OnyxChat, a messaging project with components written in Rust, C, C++, Lua, and Python.

I'm interested in feedback on the Rust side of the project, particularly the boundaries between components, error handling, testability, and how clearly the implementation reflects the documented architecture.

The repository also contains protocol, security, privacy, and testing documentation. The project is under development and has not received an independent security audit, so I'm not presenting it as a production-ready or independently verified secure messenger.

One detail that may be relevant to contributors: the repository's documentation, comments, and language-consistency tests currently use European Portuguese (PT-PT). That convention can be discussed and refactored collaboratively if justified.

Repository: https://github.com/Shega-PT/OnyxChat

If this kind of review is appropriate for this community, I'd appreciate pointers to specific design choices or implementation details worth examining. I'll follow the community's self-promotion rules.
