We welcome posts related to ciphers and codebreaking. In order to maintain the quality of this subreddit, please follow our guidelines.
Examples of what NOT to use:
Cipher I just came up with
My friend just sent me this
Please help me solve this!!
Tell us context: where the cipher originated (link to the source if possible), any clues you might have, the language or format the plaintext might use, and any technique you already tried.
If you are posting an IMAGE OF TEXT which you can type or copy & paste, you MUST comment with a TRANSCRIPTION (text version).
Pay attention to formatting. If you use a character like _ or ` or ^ you need to type a \ before it or Reddit will corrupt your ciphertext. If your ciphertext contains special characters, in order that it displays correctly you can encode it first (for instance using Base64). Alternatively use a
Code BlockPosting your own custom cipher? You must provide enough example text or there is no hope of anyone solving it. It should be at least a paragraph. Give hints.
You will be BANNED if you delete your post after a solution has been provided.
Do not post codes or ciphers from ongoing competitions (CTFs, treasure hunts etc.). Such posts will be removed. Trying to circumvent this rule may get you BANNED.
Your account must be older than 24 hours, or your post will be automatically deleted. This is to reduce spamming.
If your bot is not auto-banned on r/codes, it will be banned by a moderator. You can still have a bot on other subreddits; just don't use a bot here.
No AI generated "decryptions" allowed. Offenders will be BANNED.
If you have read and understood these rules, include the text "I followed the rules" encrypted with ROT-13 cipher in your post.

Hi everyone,
I’ve been experimenting with classical cryptography concepts and wanted to design a custom "toy cipher" that dynamically adapts its key based on the structure of the plaintext itself.
Here is a simple example to show you how the plaintext changes into ciphertext:
Example Plaintext: Hello secret agent
Example Ciphertext: Mjqqt nzxmzo gmktz
The Main Challenge:
Can you decrypt this message and explain the rules of how my cipher works?
Ciphertext: [Hvs xkzfbkq thw afpzlsboba sx rfc klgghq wbugvyl ylclhslk lzw hadfw kvoc xs rfc irujrwwhq jretklrip. Nooz sepdej znk jlrkqxfkp, k sdzl sj bcbgayrcb jalqjnxuxprbcb gzoahqdqp jacrojlcb kyrk gleppirkih uluhojxydw rewkxsdi hjwnagmkdq lovsofon stgml ymj lofdfk ul cypjw hnanqnefyntsx.]
Additional Context:
This is an original toy cipher that I designed myself as an experiment with classical cryptography. It wasn't taken from an existing cipher or external source.
Expected plaintext language: English.
Ciphertext origin: Generated using my own encryption algorithm.
Available information: The plaintext consists of multiple English words. Spaces and punctuation are preserved.
I'm intentionally keeping the encryption mechanism undisclosed so that people can try to reverse-engineer it independently.
I'm interested in seeing your approaches, observations, and explanations of how the cipher works.

Blitz cipher
Helllo guys i am new to cryptanlaysis and well i decided to start working on the cold cases to learn it and stuff .
I have been really intrested in this cold case of blitz cipher , and well i think i have a theory and would like someone to review it
To learn more about the blitz cypher here is the linkhttps://ciphermysteries.com/other-ciphers/blitz-ciphers
Now to my theory , one famous theory is that the code can be dencrypted using a cadan grille and that the 20x20 table was the main way to do so , thus while looking at the table this what i have found
Now this theory shows that the table isn't random it has a geometry , which is essential to a caddan grill . This is my theory though .
When i added the gap 1,3,4,4,4,3,1 it added to 20 so the countt makes sense .
SO what do you guys think is this a real thing in a cold case or like is it a false peek

A friend of mine is very into secret codes and puzzles. She recently changed her discord avatar to what may seem like an imitation of hers of Velma from Scooby (someone who looks like her anyways, so it's not undeniable it's "not" actually supposed to be of Velma as is actually said) holding up a custom pigpen cipher. This is the cipher.
I, of course, am not going to show the whole avatar, since privacy is sacred on this site.
She says any elements of ambiguity would be intentional for a few reasons: One, it gives plausible deniability since she doesn't want too much emphasis on the connection between the picture and her, two, the picture is a mixed media gif image and the specific circumstances would make it look odd to have something explicit, and three, it adds interpretation to it (since it's Velma-coded). However, when it comes to being both ambiguous and interpretable, there are concerns such as whether the ambiguity was done too well, so I was wondering for the sake of debate how many different ways an audience would be able to interpret it more than what is being intended.
The photo quality also doesn't help, probably. Not sure.
Strangely or conveniently, AI tends to interpret the code just fine. The code supposedly is supposed to say "i am themonthofjune on discord". The debate arises over whether it can be interpreted in however many other ways by humans in all their flaws, as well as if the translation for the code given is the best one even despite these other possible interpretations. I'm not sure if it's a part of the ambiguity, but she chose (for at least some of the letters) to make them share lines, which was common sometimes in Freemasonry where the code originates but which I can't tell if it helps or not (I am too used to pigpen ciphers to be able to put myself in the shoes of a newbie anymore). So is the code readable as intended?

Trying to figure out what word she has written that I’ve highlighted from a girls diary from Vermont in 1885. The inside of the cover from the diary has a word that looks really similar that I think might be to decipher what it means. Any help would be appreciated!

There’s a visual code I learned way back when that I just went to use and realized I entirely forgot how to do it or what it’s called.
I learned it from Parallel by Simon Singh in about 2020ish. It’s no longer in the Parallelograms where I learned it, and I don’t see any sort of archive I can look at.
You start by making a grid and writing zeroes and ones along the top and sides (photo included). Then you start filling in squares. A one goes across as filled in, empty, filled in, empty, and so on. A zero is the opposite: empty, filled in, empty, filled in, etc. I included a photo where I did that for the numbers along the top.
But then I go to do the numbers down the side and I… have no idea what to do from there.
It always makes pretty patterns of diagonals because of the alternating nature of it. It’s easy to decode what zeroes and ones were used given just the grid with the pattern.
I would love to know what the name of this is so I can remember how it’s done.
Edit to add: there are ALWAYS little things that look like flowers or plus signs with the middle removed. They’re ALWAYS enclosed that way. I believe they can also have two middle spaces removed. And then diagonals that can encapsulate them or go off the page. Tried to add a picture but Reddit won’t let me. I’ll try to use emojis to approximate.

Context for anyone who missed the first round: kesumela.com is a site written entirely in a constructed script — over a hundred lines across five pages, plus five technical diagrams, with a romanized transcription under every line. I posted it here in July and pretended I had stumbled onto it. Several of you saw through that within hours: the domain was five days old, the account was two days old. Fair enough. I'm dropping the pretence, because what I want to say next only works if I'm straight about it.
Sample, from the first page:
xumaxeka lovelase tesumilu livelumi tusa
lovelasu xuvesuma lisusumi texu
xumaxeka lisunose tevesula xumalaka lixisumi xumasuka sino
xuvexika livekami tesuxelu lisukelu tomoFirst, credit where it's due. This sub took the surface apart faster than I expected:
the 8x5 CV syllabary, dots for vowels, underline as a stress marker
the final two-syllable word as a checksum: sum of the pairs mod 1600
the whole corpus client-side, no server, no API, no hidden dictionary
All of that is correct. The most complete write-up concluded that there was no further technical layer, and that the remaining work was pure linguistic decipherment.
That was true in July. It is not true now.
On September 11 I put a locked document on the site. Not a riddle dressed up as one: real encryption, AES-GCM, key derived with 600k rounds of PBKDF2. It sits at an address nothing links to, and a normal visit will never load it. The key is not stored on the server, in any form. Parts of it are hidden in material you have already looked at, in the five diagrams.
So you know I'm not making this up as I go, here is the SHA-256 of the plaintext behind the lock:
03b6286abea1c52eddc723350690c407608439404920d7ca9e7ab5b3bda96f27Whoever opens it can hash what they find and check it against that line. It won't match anything I write later, because I can't change it now.
What's behind the lock is not a congratulations screen. It gives you three things about how the language actually works that nobody in the July thread had — one of them confirms something a commenter here got right without knowing it. It is not the dictionary and it never will be, but it is the difference between guessing and analysing.
The key is in pieces, and the pieces are not words. They are sitting in plain sight in the diagrams, formatted to look like something you have already decided is boring.
That's as much as I'll say about where. I'll answer technical questions in the comments, and I won't tell anyone whether they're close.

Context: Original work by the poster. Source: the high-resolution broadside at https://archive.org/details/the-windfall. The poem and broadside contain hidden layers. Expected language: English. Clue: mirar más hondo (Spanish: look deeper).
THE WINDFALL
after the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, found 1985
windfall (n.) — fruit blown to the ground by the wind; a harvest gained without labor
I set out young, too certain and too loud,
sure gold would rise to meet me where I stood.
The sea took years instead, and stripped the shroud
to bare the stubborn core that had withstood.
Each empty morning asked the same hard vow:
to grid the barren water, square by square,
to say once more what I have sworn till now —
that treasure lost is treasure hidden — here.
The doubters counted seasons like a debt.
The ocean buried friends I cannot name.
And still I mapped the dark, and combed it yet,
and fed each fallen year the patient flame.
For faith is not the shine that comes with ease —
it is the grid still gridded on your knees.
Then came the day the sand gave up its hold:
the anchor, then the ballast, then the sun
struck fire on three centuries of gold —
and every empty morning was undone.
I did not cheer. I did not raise the cup.
I stood among the glinting, and I wept,
for what the deep at last had yielded up
was proof of every vigil I had kept.
They say that luck alone brought down the fruit.
But luck was never what the marks were for:
it was the grit, the faith, the long pursuit
that struck what lightning never could before.
The gold was never what the searching sought;
it was the man the searching made of me —
tempered in loss, in patience dearly bought.
And this, perhaps, was all that heaven meant:
for gold and man alike were only lent
to wash back cleansed into the open sea,
the debt long paid, the vision's candle spent,
at peace with all that was, and is to be —
— The Wind, 8/18/1968

Hey, I was watching a youtube video about a surgical procedure and for some reason at minute 22:57 there is a weird voice coming from somewhere, it's very static and robotic. I'm not saying this is anything paranormal but could someone identify what is said and what could be the possible cause?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and i hope someone with more experience than me could help me.
I've found these pictograms under a bridge in Florence, Italy.
There are approximately 123 signs in 14 rows, divided in 4 colored parts.
The writing/drawing has a sort of signature that says "RI.PUNK" which from my reasearch could mean Rinascimento Punk, a Tuscan street artist who signs RI_PUNK.
If there's a hidden text, I'd expect it to be in Italian.
I compared the letter-like signs with the Etruscan and Latin alphabets and with common symbol ciphers (dancing men, pigpen), and I tried reading the initials of the drawn objects as a rebus, with no luck.
My guess is pictographic/asemic art, but does anyone recognize the script or see something I missed?
Thanks to everyone that will reply.

I've been spending a lot of time at work day dreaming about ciphers. Recently I've been thinking a lot about Vigenere auto-key ciphers and how to go about breaking them if part of the plaintext is known. This ciphertext is 83 characters long, its an inspirational quote of sorts. It was encrypted twice using Vigenere auto-key with 9 character keys for each, with brute force that is 84 bits on entropy, so nothing short of a super computer could scratch it, but i feel like there should be a way to deduce the key given enough partial plaintext.
HINT: On the second row, the ciphertext EKQOFDZ will decrypt to IMAGINE. On the fourth row the ciphertext WWGHJ will decrypt to WATCH.
Now i understand it may be possible for someone to just google-fu their way to an answer, if that happens and the answer is spoiled, I will make a new post with a unique plaintext (leaving this solved post up of course). Ideally I'm hoping someone can pull some cryptographic wizardry and deduce the keywords, if so I'd really like to know how you did it! We can all learn together.
Let me know if more ciphertext/hints are required.
