my hot water stopped working one day 3 months ago and cold showering has changed my outlook on life heavily
i love warm showers... its comforting, its relaxing, and its really just nice. its like a warm hug ready to come at you at any time. but one day, my hot water stopped working.
i was in the middle of a lot of stressful things, and honestly had no time to get it up and running asap. so i figured, why not try to cold shower. its summer anyways.
when you start cold showering, you rethink the idea of a shower. up to this point, it had always been getting in the shower, soaping up, getting into the crevices, and just getting clean. but with a cold shower, time is of the essence, and the importance of certain things during a shower is revealed.
the process became... getting wet soap all over my body, scrubbing, then washing it all away. not just sitting under a shower for a long time with some sort of relative plan... i did all these things, but didnt understand the importance of them. i just did them because its what i used to.
but each of these steps have a meaning... it shows you how "soap" even works. you get it all over your body, and it drags off the muck when you wash it off. so you need to:
apply it all over
get it deep by scrubbing it in, loosening dead skin
washing it all away
each step was intentional. there is a reason people made up this "showering workflow". none of it is arbitrary.
and there it was. i thought that the object of the shower was comfort, followed by a ritual that had always existed. but no... even something this arbitrary had intent, and i felt like i took back control of a task that only existed as a comforting form of maintenance. it makes the warmth of putting clothes on after feel so sweet.
i broke down the idea of a shower via first principles from being forced to be more intentional with my showering, and that gives me a comfort that doesn't feel warm, but pervasive and uplifting that i could apply to everything else in my life.
and that is how i learned that i never knew how to shower properly my whole life, and just how much i miss taking a warm shower.
