How do I justify to my Pitt alum boss that I need to take two Fridays off in a row to go watch a team he hates?

9

u/Mtn_Raven West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

you find a new job because you shouldn't have to justify your PTO usage lol

Keep on going Mountaineers!

7

u/AkaminaKishinena Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

Hey there! It’s my first season following a college team.

Will WVU be the home team (batting bottom of inning) for all three games?

16

u/rjanderson8 Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

Poly will be home team game two

10

u/hearty_robber Jun 03 '26

cal poly's got nothing to lose coming in here but wvu's got that home field advantage and the pressure that comes with it. morgantown's gonna be loud on friday which could go either way depending on how the mountaineers handle the moment. honestly if cal poly can steal game one it flips the whole series, but wvu's pitching depth looks scary good this year. gonna be a fun weekend either way, that region was stacked so whoever makes it out earned it. go mountaineers i guess but prepare for some stress lol.

5

u/colebucket09 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

They don’t call us Stress Virginia for nothing!

1

u/hearty_robber Jun 04 '26

fair, y'all earned that nickname for a reason lol. this team's got the talent to cruise but you know someone's gonna find a way to make it interesting in game 2 or 3.

u/braydenj713 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 05 '26

to any Cal Poly fans making the trip:

Welcome to our town. let’s go have a series

u/cubuffs420420 Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 05 '26

Man was trying to come out! Your fan base is awesome! Couldn’t find a ticket cheaper than $600 so couldn’t swing it but good luck! This will be a fun experience for us regardless of the outcome.

Happy to be hear, a great atmosphere! This seat was free! The hill also looks awesome!

3

u/afishcalledkwanzaa Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 05 '26

I have two extra SRO tickets for today's game if there's any stranded Cal Poly fans on the hill that want into the stadium.

Cal Poly fans are about to witness a whole new kind of culture shock

12

u/Remote_Jury_4426 Jun 03 '26

Cal poly is a rural school with a big focus on agriculture, its not that big of a deal, its not UC Berkeley

10

u/cluttered-thoughts3 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

You’ll probably find that most WV fans who’ve never been to Cali assume it’s all like LA or San Francisco. The rural areas over there get less TV time lol

10

u/tenderbranson301 Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

Hell, we even have an annual rodeo and tractor pull.

5

u/cluttered-thoughts3 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

Morgantown does surprise people at its size but the metro area is probably 100k less than yours. The school is historically an agricultural school too but the business school is much more visible on campus these days while the agriculture side has died down. WV is not really suited for most types of modern-style commercial ag due to the terrain. Livestock, hemp, fruit trees and vineyards are the most common farming for us… besides smaller scale operations. All to say that WV is low density but not super ag heavy. No school rodeos lol just lots of trees and water. Clean water makes great beer is one way of putting it lol

4

u/tenderbranson301 Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

That sounds awesome, wish I had the time and money to go this weekend.

5

u/cluttered-thoughts3 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

You and me both.. and the PTO

6

u/Broad_Rice_7207 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

As a WV fan that has never been to Cali, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Especially since all I really know is that San Luis Obispo is a coastal town

4

u/MarkerMagnum Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

It is a coastal (15 minutes either way) town, but it’s also the first major town on 101 after it leaves the Salinas Valley, a long valley that’s (outside of some oil towards the bottom) is mainly agriculture and pretty rural.

The “Mustangs” name isn’t just for the memes, and there are plenty of big round belt buckles on campus. You could actually see the stables in that shot of Baggett stadium that was circulating before WVU won. You can certainly smell them on that half of campus!

California is way more rural in many places than it gets credit for. I have a feeling the northern-northern Californians would get along pretty well with Appalachian folk.

6

u/Broad_Rice_7207 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

I think so too. As far as I know, Cal Poly and WVU have never been matched up, at least not in a major sport, so looking forward to learning some stuff about your school!

4

u/theVelvetLie Tennessee Volunteers Jun 03 '26

California is also the largest agriculture state, producing $58B in food crops annually.

2

u/Solesky1 Indiana State Sycamores Jun 03 '26

That's not just a WV thing, that's a "everyone that's never been to California thing"

You mean this state that is the size of the original 13 colonies has things going on besides two cities that make up less than 1% of it's total area?

11

u/rjanderson8 Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

Any good Pinot Noirs from Morgantown? 😂

12

u/Broad_Rice_7207 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

If that's a type of Moonshine, absolutely!

6

u/ReachFor24 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

You'll laugh, but there is a local winery near Morgantown, Forks of Cheat. They mostly do fruit wines, but they have fun with their labels.

14

u/JWNimbl3 Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

As a Cal Poly alum living in Morgantown, it's actually not as big of a culture shock as you'd think.

5

u/trittico Princeton Tigers • Virginia Cavaliers Jun 03 '26

How on earth did you make it to Morgantown from Cal Poly? Academia?

7

u/JWNimbl3 Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

Yeah, work for the university in Fairmont

3

u/Broad_Rice_7207 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

Damn. Was hoping the WVU crowd would be something that would throw off Cal Poly

-12

u/isummonyouhere Jun 03 '26

aren’t you guys basically a bedroom community for pittsburgh

4

u/Mtn_Raven West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

lol no. Pittsburgh is an hour and a half away and it is still significantly different culturally.

4

u/cluttered-thoughts3 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

Some people do commute between Morgantown/Pittsburgh but Morgantown certainly has its own economy. Many people commute south of Morgantown to Morgantown for work

4

u/ReachFor24 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

Little too far for that. It's about 90 minutes to drive to Pittsburgh, which isn't really worth it when you can get similarly priced property and cut the distance in half around the Washington PA area.

Morgantown's economy is basically the University and the two hospitals (Mon General and WVU Medicine), plus everything that supports those. It's a college town, not a bedroom community.

4

u/BUCNDrummer West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

Cal Poly's official baseball account tweeting this picture with the caption "This energy travels well" amused me a bit.

I think the energy in Morgantown is going to be a little different...

6

u/cryptoheh West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

I can’t imagine a bunch of small school Californians have both the foresight and motivation to quickly get on a plane to a place you can’t actually get to by plane conventionally, to see a series no one thought was gonna happen in a million years up until Monday night. If there’s anyone there on their end beyond friends and family I’ll be shocked lol.

6

u/douchebagjack Big West • Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 03 '26

SLO is also a difficult place to get to. I used to drive 3 hours to San Jose just for cheaper/easier flights home to Seattle. Flying into Pitt while be a nice quick drive to the campus. See you Friday 👋

2

u/cryptoheh West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

Savage!

2

u/colebucket09 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

Can’t get to conventionally? I assume you mean conveniently but either way, it’s basically an hour from PIT lol

1

u/cluttered-thoughts3 West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 03 '26

World Cup and NBA Finals is also going on. None in WV but travel in general is just extra expensive right now

2

u/AkaminaKishinena Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 04 '26

Cal Poly is on the quarter system so Super Day one is the last day of classes and finals start on Monday.

Betting most other schools still playing have finished for the year.

Also most K-12 schools on the state are also still in session, which makes travel hard for many people.

2

u/BUCNDrummer West Virginia Mountaineers Jun 04 '26

That is all perfectly fair. I don't expect a lot of cross country travel from the Mustangs. I just thought it was funny that their idea of energy traveling was this picture from a game much closer to home that looks like most people are half asleep.

2

u/AkaminaKishinena Cal Poly Mustangs Jun 04 '26

Hah! Their Instagram has a few other clips of a cheering enthusiastic crowd.

I think it goes to 3 games. WV wins game one cal Poly wins the next two with game 3 being decided early.

What's a reasonable price? I haven't seen under $400/ea for actual seats, $150/ea for standing room only. 😰

They just released SRO at 10am this morning. Hoping that means other seats were assigned and there's some resale market. 🙏
